As a child, Genevieve Laurent was told that dreams didn’t happen. When she was in her 30s, she fell in love with a young speed skier from Tahoe named Colin Burns. Colin believed in dreams and in Genevieve, and poetry too. He asked Genevieve to marry him.
Her Biggest Dream Collapsed
Colin was a wildly successful skier, the best in the world. Then he died on a speed course in France.
Genevieve Was Desperate
Genevieve called Tahoe Detective Owen McKenna and asked for help. But when he tried to assist, there was another tragedy, and Genevieve lost her last shred of hope. Her business was destroyed, she was being pursued by a ruthless killer, and her survival seemed unlikely.
Detective McKenna Was Determined to Rebuild Her Life
McKenna decided he would catch the killer, pick up the pieces, and put Genevieve’s life back together. But if he failed, it looked like he would die with her…
Todd Borg and his wife moved from Minnesota to Lake Tahoe in 1990. After his fourth Tahoe novel, he sold his business to write full time.
In addition to winning the Ben Franklin Award for Best Mystery of the Year, Todd Borg's Owen McKenna mysteries have been chosen for Top 5 Mystery lists by the prestigious Library Journal, and by Mystery News Reviewer G. Wedgwood. He's won Best Mystery and Best Thriller honors from the Bay Area Independent Publishers Association and received Best New Fiction accolades from libraries. His novels have also received starred reviews and raves in major trade journals and newspapers across the country.
Todd Borg and his wife live on Lake Tahoe's South Shore.
High speed skiing, insurance claims, scammers, and all the familiar, lovable characters immediately pull you into Todd’s newest mystery.
We meet champion speed skier Colin Burns as he tries to break the speed record of 160 mph.
Thankfully and miraculously he does beat the record, but he tumbles to his death as something hits his leg and takes him flying into the air and smashing to the ground.
How could a champion like him fail as he was slowing down?
Shortly after, Owen McKenna gets a call from Colin’s girlfriend Genevieve because she was having trouble collecting the two-million-dollar life insurance policy from the insurance company.
As Owen was investigating, more heartbreak happens for Genevieve.
McKenna wasn't too successful with his investigation so far, but he couldn’t give up after the last disaster because he felt it was his fault.
He normally gets himself into some bad situations. This time it seemed even worse. Does he get out of the disasters?
Find out how it all turns out in this as always intriguing, tension-filled read with another Todd Borg masterful plot.
With his books you always learn so many new things, and he has such detailed writing that you are right there with the characters.
He just crafts the best storylines.
You definitely do not want to miss this one.
Mr. Borg never disappoints. You won’t be able to put the book down and will be turning the pages faster than a speed skier can get down the hill.
Thank you to Mr. Borg for a copy of his book. All opinions are my own.
As with all of Todd Borg's books (I have read all of them), I thought this was another excellent adventure. Having worked with law enforcement officers for 30+ years myself, it is my opinion that he definitely thinks like a Detective!
Todd is a great storyteller! The imagination and detail in his stories, as well as the ability to show humor, compassion, and sentiment, makes you feel like you are witnessing it all as it happens! I also love that he always uses the same main characters in his stories because it makes you feel like you know them all as "family."
There is always a lot of excitement and imagination in identifying and pursuing "bad people" in Todd's books. I always look forward to the next one, and hope he continues to write! Todd is an awesome author, and I would recommend his books to anyone that enjoys reading!
Author Todd Borg always knows how to involve his private detective in some fascinating subjects, and Tahoe Speed is no exception. This time, it's speed skiing, which I simultaneously found interesting and frightening. (Sorry, speed skiers, Franz Klammer winning the downhill in the 1976 Olympics is as fast as I want to go.)
Little did private investigator Owen McKenna know that, when he agreed to help Colin's soulmate, Genevieve Laurent, he would become involved in a world of fine dining, insurance policies, protection rackets, and strange weaponry. As always, the mystery is intriguing, and it drew me right in, but the main reason why I will continue to come back for more is the wonderful family Borg has created around his main character.
Of course, there's his sidekick, Spot, a Harlequin Great Dane, as well as the love of his life, insect expert Street, and her adopted deaf daughter, Camille. And he couldn't get by without all his friends in the local police. I'm also hoping that two new characters in Tahoe Speed-- restaurateur Genevieve Laurent and police rookie Hattie Foster-- will make future appearances.
Even if I don't meet Genevieve and Hattie again, I will always perk up when I know there's a new Owen McKenna mystery available. I'm addicted to this series' fascinating, fast-paced mysteries and their unforgettable characters. Hurry up, Mr. Borg, I'm ready for the next one!
I truly enjoy Todd Borg, but I was disappointed with this novel for a few reasons. When Owen is attacked and severely beaten there is no way he could have recovered enough to stand and walk to his car. He needed medical help. Plus, Owen never, in the text, tells Street or the other women about his beating. Yet, in later chapters he refers openly about this beating. When did he tell the women? Finally, Owen miraculously finds a way to recover Genevieve's insurance money by using a farfetched scheme. As a faithful Todd Borg follower, the book did not exhibit a tightly wrapped plot.
Tahoe Speed, Todd Borg’s newest murder mystery thriller is a page turner, sure to please! In his usual manner, Borg incorporates social issues and art forms in weaving the fabric of his novels, this time using works of iconic historical literary authors Robert Burns and Victor Hugo, with a mention of Maya Angelo. Borg’s highlighting awareness of scamming vulnerable people by bullies was eye opening, as you will discover. The novel begins with Colin Burns the world record holder in the sport of Downhill Speed Racing, who is in love with a French Tahoe Restauranteur, Genevieve Laurent, his “red, red rose!” Unfortunately, Burns mysteriously dies as he completes his run to become the fastest skier ever to race downhill. He had bought a two-million-dollar life insurance policy and made Genevieve the beneficiary, in case anything ever happened to him. But the insurance company declined to pay it, claiming Burns had not disclosed a chronic illness on the application. He was healthy and was never diagnosed with any illness. Genevieve contacted Tahoe sleuth Owen McKenna to investigate the unbelievable cause of his death and the non-pay of the insurance policy. During the investigation, McKenna and his law enforcement colleagues, Diamond and Santiago, new lady cop, Hattie Foster, as well as his trusty Great Dane, Spot encounter thugs who are scamming foreign born Tahoe restaurant chefs for ‘protection services,’ one of whom is Genevieve. Also, Owen uncovers an unscrupulous life insurance executive and convinces him to review the decision to decline the policy pay-out. It became apparent Burn’s death was homicide, but who was the murderer? You will be surprised as the story unfolds and leads to a dramatic life or death conclusion, aided by Street Casey’s adopted deaf daughter, Camille, using sign language. As I mentioned, It’s a page-turner!
One of the joys of discovering an author is the fun of diving into new releases. In the nearly twenty years since I read my first Todd Borg novel, I’ve found a dependably solid author who brings thrills and surprises to every volume. Tahoe Speed is the 23rd novel in the Owen McKenna Mystery Thriller series and it lives up to its proud heritage. This time, Borg sends McKenna and company into the world of high speed skiing. When a heartbroken restaurateur hires him to look into an insurance company’s unwillingness to settle her dead fiancé’s policy. McKenna has to learn a whole new way of looking at the beautiful slopes as he digs into the young man’s world. If he doesn’t learn fast enough, there may be more dead bodies to investigate. McKenna doesn’t pretend to know everything, and he calls on a broad spectrum of authorities for help. Borg is a master of sharing the necessary info with readers without lecturing or talking down to them. We learn, along with McKenna, the ins and outs of high speed skiing, life insurance payouts and Lake Tahoe area restaurants. McKenna’s posse of friends, canine companion Spot, the harlequin Great Dane, entomologist Casey Street and her adopted daughter Camille, Sergeants Diamond Martinez and Jack Santiago, and Street’s dog Blondie all contribute their talents to helping him solve the problem. Filled with beautiful settings, colorful characters, great interactions and a grab-you-by-the-throat storyline, Tahoe Speed will keep you engaged from the first page to the last. If you enjoy well-written mysteries with plenty of thrilling action, you must read Tahoe Speed. Don’t miss this opportunity to go sleuthing with Owen McKenna. You’ll be glad you did.
Todd Borg's "Tahoe Speed" (2025) is the 23rd in the series of captivating mystery thrillers with his usual beloved cast of characters, Owen McKenna, the private detective/former SFPD officer, his Great Dane, Spot, girlfriend Street Casey, Sergeants Diamond Martinez and Jack Santiago, and others, new and old. Set on the backdrop of Lake Tahoe and it's multifaceted environs, the adventure weaves in and out of actual places, events and facts with the fictional characters, mysteries and clues.
We meet Laslo, the Border Collie, and Genevieve, the proprietor of a boutique restaurant in Truckee, beneficiary of her late fiance's life insurance. We learn about the awesome sport and skill of speed skiing, and the interesting characters who compete in it.
In true Todd Borg style, the story takes many twists and turns, examines diverse criminal enterprises, and leads us on a thrilling, page-turning adventure. This reader is always split between racing through the book to discover it's conclusions, and not wanting the book to end, since it will be another wait for the next to come out.
When i am on vacation in South Lake Tahoe i am always excited to read the newest installment of the Owen McKenna Mystery Thriller series.
When you live in South Lake Tahoe you are likely a skier, enjoying a run down snowcovered mountains.
One such young speed skier's death is the subject of this new novel. It brings tragic loss and dangerous killers to his fiance in Tahoe and PI Owen McKenna is asked to help.
And then this fast paced thriller makes you stay up late to investigate alongside Owen. And you can't stop reading. It's like being there!
How did the skier die? And why won't the life insurance policy be paid out? Who wants to harm Owen's girlfriend? And what's up with this dog Lazlo?
While you are reading about and recognizing existing locations around the lake, you are looking over Owen's shoulder as he once again solves the mysteries and dangers of this year's volume 23 in Todd Borg's page turner TAHOE SPEED, published August 2025 and available to order online or at your local bookstore.
I cheerfully admit to being a Todd Borg fan, having read all of his Tahoe series. However, in the most recent of the series, Tahoe Speed, I believe that he has outdone himself. It would be foolish for me to aver that I recall all 23 of the previous novels in detail, but nonetheless this last one truly stands out. How much more can a reader ask than to read an extremely well crafted novel with as many twists as possible while at the same time learn details about a sport about which I knew nothing more than its name? An added pleasure is to follow the cast of characters he has created as they continue to develop.
My advice to readers: Do yourself a favor: rather than reading only Tahoe Speed, read the entire series!
Todd Borg must do a lot of research to come up with these incredible stories. All the main characters have such depth to their personalities. Camille, Street, and Diamond are incredible characters. And each book brings new people for the reader to learn about. Ice bullets were new to me, and I was afraid Owen would be a victim of these new bullets. I’m glad everything worked out well for Genevieve and also for Lazlo! This is an amazing story. I’m buying the first book of the series for my husband to read. I predict that he will read them all and enjoys this series as much as I have.
Gripping from the first chapter, as always, this author has my sitting on the edge of my seat. I read while cooking, doing laundry, walking the dog, laying in bed- I find I cannot put the Owen McKenna books down until they are finished! This book had my gasping, laughing, wondering and then crying! The richly crafted characters interacting really make these mysteries sing loudly. The intricate issues each book delves into, holds me rapt from the first sentence to the last.
As always you have intrigued me with another fantastic book in the Lake Tahoe area, I simply could not stop reading until I finished the book. Thank you of thinking about me. I am a faithful follower of your Lake Tahoe stories and I follow Owen McKenna and Spot on all there adventures. Owen and Spot make a very good team. Thank you again for allowing me to review your books.
I have been captivated by the 23 books in the Tahoe series. The plots are masterful and engaging. The characters are now my friends and their intelligence is so needed during this reign of the dumb asses. Read these books (in order). You will be glad you did. I bow down to Todd Borg as an exemplanary author.
This is another great book by one of my favorite authors. Not only are his books entertaining and easy to read. You always learn something new about something new..
He’s added new regular characters along the way and each one fits perfectly with the group.
As always the book is amazing kept me on the edge of my seat learn things I never knew before. When reading your books it always makes me feel like if I went to Tahoe I would meet McKenna and see spot and see all the places you're right about looking forward to the next book as always an amazing read
Todd Borg had me again living each sentence with this exciting, thrilling story. It included terror, intrigue and this year, love. Thanks for the new topic to discover but also allow my familiar and lovable characters to remain in the story. I never would have guessed the ending which left me emotionally terrorized.
I am in love with the Owen McKenna series. Well written, amazing storylines, characters that captivate, pure entertainment. This latest book continues the tradition. Thanks Todd Borg.
I own all 23 of the Tahoe books and I re-read each of them each year. I am 83 and not easily impressed, but I consider Todd a top story teller. I look forward to the next story next year.
My wish would be for longer books and shorter wait times. Owen, Spot, Street and all the others never disappoint. Thank you for contributing to my reading experience and writing great stories. Please continue this series. Thanks.
the first half or so was pretty interesting, But then came everything that Todd learned ln g r e a t detail. The last of the book moved along better. PS We Nevadans do enjoy reading about our own wonderful area.
Every time I finish a Todd Borg book I say “this is the best one ever “!!! I say it every time… so the point is, all of them are as good as the one before🤷♀️. And since I’ve lived in Tahoe before, I recognize all the points of interest!!! Great job, Todd😊
When a champion speed-skier is murdered during his record-breaking run, Detective Owen McKenna is hired to seek out the how, why, and who. He encounters greed, envy, fire, bodily harm, coverups, and canines. Love the dogs. A fast-paced thriller that keeps you anxiously reading and wanting more.
This is the second book I have read by this author, and also my second 5-Star review. While I thought some elements were pushing the limits of what would happen in real life, the strong and likable characters and the way it was wrapped up at the end are worthy of my 5 star rating.
I love this series! Owen and all his friends are great characters. Owen always gets in tight spots, but that makes it interesting. Lake Tahoe setting is the best.
I’ve read every book in the series. Big fan of Todd and Lake Tahoe. Each book brings back memories of all the time I spent in South Shore, with my family. Keep writing, Todd💕
