Hurting from a breakup, Jersey becomes determined to start and go through college without falling in love. Then she meets Kevin who seems to want nothing more out of life than to pester her relentlessly. He won't stop annoying her, but she can't stop thinking about him. Though they're locked up in a hate-hate relationship, they can't stand to be apart.
Will all hell break loose when these two come together or will they end up with happy ever after?
The Despicable Guy is really good. The lines... AWESOME! Though some of the lines were derived from other books/stories, it's fine... i mean, hey, that's normal! even those great and famous authors borrow lines from others, you know. I fell inlove with the characters. Omg. My friends and I got soooo addicted to this.. To the point that we can't stop talking about it. We can't go home without talking about the KEVJE vibes and all. One of my friends even used the main characters' name as her username. Really good. Trust me. ;)
The story was good and nice and sweet. But the thing is, some of the dialogue is NOT the author's own writing. She actually "borrowed" lines from Drama Queenby Abi Aquino. I really feel that this work is "sayang". Her ideas were good. I just hoped she tried to make her own dialogue.
I didn't know there's The Despicable Guy on Goodreads!!! I've only read two stories on Wattpad, ever - The Despicable Guy (and all its related books) and She's Dating The Gangster. The Despicable Guy will forever remain to be that Tagalog Wattpad story that will never fail to make me giggle, bicycle in the air, punch my pillows, and make me want to throw my cellphone on the wall because of the kilig. I really love how realistic the story FELT especially with the setting and the language, giving the readers the old school Filipino kilig. Probably the only thing that kind of didn't make me want to believe in the story of Kevin and Jersey is that they're both - for the lack of a better word - perfect. They are good-looking, rich, smart, talented - you name it. As much as the story is kilig-inducing, it makes me wonder if I could ever find my own Kevin even if I'm not a Jersey. Will I ever experience a love like theirs even i I'm just... me?
What I didn't like: —Awkward grammar errors (parang hindi in-edit) —Inconsistency of Jersey's character (one moment she's saying she hates Paul, then she likes him, or she feels kilig because of Kevin, then she's mad at him. I get that it's supposed to be an inner debate of feelings but it was not executed well and most of the time it leaves me confused in a bad way.) —That part where Kevin ate something that he's allergic to. Sobrang babaw naman ng motivation to do that, please. Saka ang toxic, wew. Kadiri.
What I liked: —Though I still don't get how a couple could be that famous in college, I appreciate some of the key moments in their development —Changing a play script is very disrespectful to the playwright, but I appreciate the improvisation of some lines to get the story going.
Okay naman si Leng magsulat. Polished compared to others, at may substance.
Matalino, maganda, marunong kumanta at umarte, magaling magluto, debater, photographer, multilingual, ano pa? Wala ba siyang mas malala-lalang "flaw" bukod dun sa bibig niya
(3) Umiinom na at the age of what? 16 or 17?
(5) Lahat sila mayaman. Okay. *yung sapatos talaga!*
(7) Medyo mahaba yung kwento...
Hurray i liked the story! the plot was good, but i don't like it when kevin calls her devil woman. the happenings are so fast and stuff, it should've been collaborated more and i didn't really get kevin or jersey's looks because it they weren't described. and, first day of college, they were THAT close, unbelievable. and i think changing the script for the play is kinda embarassing especially the shawarma girl part, lol. You shouldn't have added Kevin's POV they were just really quick. And the giving 18 gifts was romantic and all and going to singapore, but damn! how rich was he? Overall, it was a fantastic book! didn't read it in wattpad bc I'm not used to. 1/8 palang yung nababasa ko sa libro, kilig na agad ako eh. well, this book just makes me want to have a despicable guy of my own! a sweet, despicable, adorable guy. great ideas! hope I can make a story too.
A copy was provided from Pop Fiction because I'm a judge at Filipino Reader's Choice Awards
This is a load of BEEP! I love the idea of the story but then the author started making things a little bit awkward for her characters. Most of the blame should be on the writing style, I could not get into any of their heads. They were supposedly college students but they act like they're in high school sometimes even younger than that. *head desk*
There were lots of cute scenes that make you go awww but it couldn't cover up all the crap of the story. This one just doesn't make any sense. There was no conflict, there were just 2 friends who didn't want anything to do with a relationship but somehow they worked it all out. End of story. Mkay? I should just go away before I say something awful and uncouth.
This was a quick read for me. The story was not too light nor heavy. Although, I did enjoy several moments in the book, I kind of lost interest halfway through. Also, I didn't really connect much with all the characters, but I did find some appealing. Over-all, I'll give this book 3 stars!
This book was written 10 years ago, so it's kind of understandable for me if the words and dialogues were somewhat corny, and the writing style used was not that established. However, this trope was not giving to me because I already outgrew this kind of story and my present self can't handle it. I really want to dnf this, but I was reading on a book that I bought so I feel like it would be a waste of money if I didn't finish it🥲
I want the wattpad version of this book. Raw and aunthentic. I feel that they really exist in real life. As an avid reader of Leng, I can say that among the other writers of wattpad in 2010 era, she has the skills of creating a story in the most realistic sense.
This is one of my comfort story aside from If I Fall which is she was also the author.
I never thought that goodreads have this wattpad story 'The Despicable Guy'. I been looking for full story of this for too long because the author of this in wattpad only posted the half of the story.
I read this book when I was in junior high school this book is my favorite book in all Wattpad books that I've already read. I wish I have a guy like Kevin.
This by far is my all time favorite Wattpad book. I love the chemistry between Jersey and Kevin. I like how the story was written and very much enjoyed it. Can't wait to read the second book soon.
As in!
This story catches my interest from the very start of its chapter. Ito yung "pinaka-ewan" na librong tagalog na nabasa ko, ( and yes, nagbabasa na ko ng mga tagalog books ngayon, thanks to this! hihi).
"EWAN" kasi, yun eh.
HAaaaay EWAN! Ang ganda lang ng pagkakasulat talaga. Kasi lahat normal eh. Pati yung, mayat mayay mura don, mura dito! Sapak don, sapak dito! Barahan don, barahan dito! Nangyayari talaga yun sa totoong buhay, sa College life natin, di ba? XD
** selfpub version 2.5 stars ** The selfpub version has pros and cons -the dual pov is a nice idea as it is more focus with the MC and the narration is not as jeje as before, but due to the new idea of dual pov only, there’s a lot of deleted scenes and it affects the dynamic of each characters and transition. The narration is not clean enough for it not to notice. I felt lost a lot times coz it keeps on jumping from one scene to another and there are times that the deleted scenes from prev chaps have been mentioned on the next chap so there’s a “huh” moment. Tbh I like the idea of the selfpub ver, it just that I wasn’t able to enjoy it because of those “huh” moments of the deleted scenes and missed the dynamic of their group.
** unedited version 3 stars ** I’m a little biased here coz I really love kevje duo. Even though this version is very jeje and there’s a lot of unnecessary scenes, I can ignore it coz of the feeling of the unedited version gives. If I’ll be technical of course the rating will not be the same. There’s a lot to improve and to edit.
I've read this way back 2011, even before it became viral in wattpad. I was one of the very first reader of Ms. Leng and look where this online fan fiction is now?
I have to admit that it was another cliche story, but I loved the realistic approach of the novel. The readers aren't deprive of the different aspect of life such as family, school, job and romantic relationship. It was a great combination of what life is all about.
Romance? It has a slow burn between the main characters. They always bicker and tease each other. Devil woman and the Despicable guy.. Nuff said.
It's sweet & heart-warming. I liked the quote references, but it would be nice if the author created her own :D
This is one of the few books I read (as in finished until the end) on Wattpad way back year 2011 and I remember getting all giddy with my highschool friend over this. Back then, it was not so easy for me to get all kilig at these kind of stories but I was hooked up to it because it's irresistibly refreshing. Also, the characters were so engaging. I loved every part of this locally written story. All that's been written felt so real, and especially that the language used was Tagalog, damang-dama mo talaga yung ganap sa libro.
