In this small town romance set in rural Australia, a bookstore owner must choose between the bull rider who broke her heart seven years ago, or the cowboy who can give her everything she lost.
HONEY It’s been seven years since I last laid eyes on Colton Hayes. To the small town of Gumtree Valley, he’s the bull riding homegrown celebrity. To me, he’s the boy who broke my heart and abandoned me to deal with a heartbreaking secret alone. Now he’s back. But it’s okay, because I have a new life, one with a kind-hearted cowboy who’s willing to give me the life I came so close to having. Except Colton’s return is showing the cracks in my relationship and the sparks which had once burnt bright between us have reignited with a passion I never thought imaginable…
COLTON When I left my life in Gumtree Valley, I swore I’d never return. Yet here I am, seven years later, helping my brother on our family’s horse ranch after my dad’s accident. The bulls, the buckle bunnies, my name in lights, it was all enough to distract me from what I’d left behind. But now I’m back, watching her start the life she’d always wanted with my brother, I’m starting to wonder what the hell I was thinking to ever walk away from her. I’d been the one to break her heart, determined to live my dream. This time, it’s my heart getting broken when I discover the secret Honey has kept from me…
It’s been too long since my last cowboy romance - or should I say jackaroo? This small town vibe is set in rural Australia and was a beautiful story, with second chance childhood sweethearts. As I read, the setting in my mind, was reminiscent of McLeod’s daughters, and I devoured the story quickly - with love and fire and bar fights. I gasped, laughed and felt the feels for these characters. As a PCOS girlie, I appreciate the PCOS rep, as I haven’t read a romance before with an FMC like me. I am thankful to be given the opportunity for this ARC read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
This book is one to read. I absolutely loved how relatable the characters were, I loved that the book worked on raising awareness to PCOS where I am one who endures PCOS, and most importantly character growth.
One of my favorite parts of the book was the character and personal development within the characters. There were many characters who realized that they made some poor decisions and decided to come together to fix those poor decisions. I loved how it brought a family back together, even with the drama that went down within the family. I loved how characters didn’t focus on what if, what could have been.
This book has betrayal, growth, and the list can go on. Never a dull moment in this book. I do hope to see another book maybe about Beau and Ellie. I’d love to see their growth.
Do know there may be some triggers: fighting, miscarriage, PCOS awareness, drinking.
I think this may be my new favourite cowboy romance book, move aside Devney Perry… I’ve never read a cowboy romance like this and I’ve read a fair few, the details were immaculate.
I had really high hopes for this read and I was absolutely blown away, I cannot get over the attention to detail throughout the book. I felt like I was in Gumtree Valley in rural Australia, not in my four walls of a bedroom. I could sense the ground thumping below me with the sound of horses approaching and the faint scent of old hay and plum jam, J.F Russel knows how to bring her readers into whatever landscape she’s imagined and land them smack bang amongst the characters.
I loved reading about Honey & Colton’s past and present, the jump between then and now was executed perfectly and it had my emotions flowing. I don’t usually cry when reading but I did, three times.
I really hope we can read Beaus story as well as Ellie-Mays, there was so much character development and I’m not ready to let them go.
I highly recommend this read and will not be shutting up about it.
Thank you for the opportunity to ARC read Sweet Like Honey.
I really enjoyed the characters in Sweet Like Honey and the second-chance romance aspect of the story. The dynamic between the pro bull rider still being in love with his ex—even though she’s now dating his brother—made for an emotional and compelling setup. The storyline kept me engaged, and I was invested in seeing how everything would play out.
While I loved the depth of the characters and their history, the love triangle aspect wasn’t my favorite. That being said, the book still had a lot of heart, and I appreciated the emotional journey the characters went through. If you enjoy second-chance romances with a bit of family drama, this one is worth checking out!

✨️✨️ Arc review ✨️✨️ This book had me in all my emotions. From smiling like a teenager to sobbing over the MCs. There is everything you need in a romance within this book. It isn't the spiciest, but it most definitely will have you hooked. If you love small town romances like Elsie Silver, you'll love this
Thank you to Fictional PR and J. F. Russell for a free eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Between school and work, I’ve been in the greatest reading slump, and this book took me right out of it.
It was so refreshingly real in the best way. It dealt with topics that not many authors can masterfully cover without making them sound weird or awkward. Seeing PCOS representation in this book made me realize a few things about my own life that I hadn’t connected before, and I’m really grateful for that.
Now on to the protagonists of the show.. HONEY and COLTON!! I, for one, LOVE them!! They are so cute, and I kind of wish that there was more interaction between them. I feel like we got more of Beau and Honey’s relationship, or Beau and Colton’s relationship, that the drama between the three sort of overshadowed a little bit of the romance between the main MCs. I did, however, enjoy the sweet moments that Honey and Colton shared, as well as their flashbacks. I just kind of wish we coup have seen their relationship more in the present than in the flashbacks.
I will say that one of the reasons I didn’t rate it five stars was because of the love triangle. I typically eat those up when they’re written well, and while it was written well in this book, I just wasn’t comfortable with who was involved or how some of the characters handled it. Instead of acting like they were heading into their thirties, they acted more like nineteen- or twenty-year-olds, and that didn’t sit right with me. It felt almost mean to Beau. :(
Thank you Fictional PR and JF Russell for the opportunity to ARC read this book!
This story had so many tropes that I love - cowboy, second chance, childhood friends to lovers. The story takes place in Australia, and maybe it’s the American in me, but I got tripped up a few times with some of the Australian terms and lingo and the lack of quotation marks (I didn’t realize this was a common Australian thing, I’ve only seen it from UK authors). For me, these couple things set me a bit outside the story. While I was ultimately rooting for our MCs to figure it out, I had a hard time really connecting with them. I did overall enjoy the storyline and, as a romance reader, enjoyed the little sprinklings through the story of Honeys bookworm tendencies.
If you enjoy cowboy romances, I would certainly say give this a chance. But please make sure you check the TWs just in case!
I loved this book! It was the perfect telling of how people can find their way back to each other after years apart and truly encapsulates 'right person, wrong time'. My favourite character though? has to be Clyde (Colton's dad), his constant eavesdropping is iconic 😂 This book did a really good job of writing the more emotional scenes, especially the tree scene (iykyk) and for that, I absolutely adored it <3
I adored the writing in this book, it's seamless and fast paced but still allowing enough detail and background to make the characters truly pop off the page! I loved how complex the characters were, and how they all have their own issues to deal with - we all have demons haunting us! But I especially loved the PCOS representation in Honey, and the insecurities she mentions dealing with - I find it rare to be able to relate to FMC's as they're all mainly portrayed as pretty and perfect (and very often slim) but having Honey think about belly rolls, acne and bloating really stuck with me, choosing to love herself despite being insecurity is a lesson I think most girls would be grateful for in the long run I am so grateful to have been on the ARC team for this! I can’t wait to see what the future brings for JF Russel!
*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*
I rate this book 3 stars for my personal opinion and book preference but a 4 star read for what I think the majority of people will rate it and like it. I personally like my romance with more romance/passion, I guess you could say a little smutty haha. It does get spicy towards the very end which felt a little off based off of 80% of this book because this book veered more serious which I normally don’t read but after reading this, I appreciated it. I think I just need to branch out with these types of books more to get a better feel for them. Best way to describe it, it felt very Nicholas sparks where there are serious undertones with real life scenarios with a realistic romance. Like grab at your heart cause it’s hurts. It’s a heartfelt book. It was slow at first, trying to get its bearings. Not sure if it’s because it’s a small town so it’s slower pace, not a lot happening but the story starts to pick up halfway. It goes back and forth between the past and the present as opposed to telling you what happens, you read it/experience it. Side note: what a dick move to swoop on your brother’s ex, not cool lol.
Congrats on your book and am so happy I was able to arc read it. You got me to start a new book genre so that’s a first step in my journey during your new journey of your book!
This book follows Honey, a bookstore owner, who suffers from PCOS and wants to start a family before it’s too late. She is having a rocky relationship with her current boyfriend, Beau, who is insecure that Honey is still not over her ex, Colton, who happens to be Beau’s brother. Colton is a famous bull rider and Honey’s childhood sweetheart who left his hometown in Australia to follow his dream. His return not only complicates Honey’s relationship with Beau further but also results in Colton deciding if he should stay in Australia or leave everything behind for his career again. This book was spectacular! I was hooked from the dedication alone. I honestly teared up reading it. As someone who struggles from PCOS I felt really connected to Honey and her struggles. I haven't read a single book that really represents what it's like for women with PCOS until I read this one. This book has a special place in my heart and has given me hope that I can have a family one day. The romance was amazing and Colton was so supportive! He's definitely swoon worthy! I hope I can find my Colton someday :) To all my girls with PCOS, you're not alone. This book is truly for you. Thank you J. F. Russell, for taking all of our collective struggles and weaving it into this perfect book. 10/10 read.
I love supporting my beautiful Aussie Indie authors and J.F Russell didn’t disappoint! I picked this book up after having it on my TBR for a while since seeing it on instagram!! It was such a good and easy read, something a little different to what I normally read as well which was a nice change!
As a rural book store owner, Honey McBride as she navigates her life after her childhood sweetheart, Colton, leaves for the USA to pursue his career in Bull Riding. So she settles down again, the only problem is, Beau is Colton's older brother, and things are already going pear shaped in their relationship so when Colton returns 7 years later to help with family things, Honey has to figure out what she really wants in her life!
- Family Drama - PCOS Rep - Love Triangle - Second Chance - Bull Rider x Book Shop Owner - Ultimate Slow Burn
The character development was so good! They realised their mistakes and poor decisions, and worked hard to make things better for themselves. I also loved though, that the characters chased their dreams first before realizing that it's ok for them to change, and although things could have been handled differently with decisions and ways things were said, they still chased what they thought was best at the time.
Honey, my girl!! She really made me feel things for her throughout the book. She had her insecurities, learning to embrace herself and her feelings. She was such an honest person and not afraid to confront situations at hand.
Colton was literally the definition of an Aussie cowboy! The poor guy had all these feelings of guilt and pressure about him leaving to pursue his dream, but still managed to make everyone else happy before himself. His love and care for Honey was unmatched and he waited until he knew he could do it all for real. And seriously who doesn't love a man that can ride a horse and bull, like come on…. HOTTTT.
I need to point out that this book is true Australian country culture to a T! It literally brought me back to my own small town! It reminded me of my all time fav aussie tv series McLeods Daughters! From the black V8 Ute (for those americans that a truck), the trips to the library in primary school, the pub, it was all perfect.
If you're after a quick, small town read that will have you swooning and feeling all the emotions then look no further! I also want to point out, J.F Russell is the sweetest soul and I’m so happy to have a friendship with her now!
🍯💛This book is sweet sweet sweet! 🥹 I really enjoyed this Australian romance! First, I really liked Honey, she is so precious! PCOS representation in a character is rare, so to see Honey with all of those insecurities she is dealing with and talking about belly rolls, acne and infertility, let me connect with her on a deeper level. She is choosing to love herself despite being insecure which is absolutely beautiful. ❤️
Also, there is a real tension in the love triangle that is Beau, Honey and Colton. Trying to surpass the way their relationship ended with the bull rider she gave her heart to, was a struggle for her. There is a deep and complicated sibling rivalry between Colton and Beau and I can understand Honey to be all tangle and trying to forget the past and still hope for a bright future.
Thank you @jf.russell and @fictional.pr for this opportunity 💗 You can get this sweet story on March 14th 2025!
ARC Review! A huge thank you to J.F. Russell and Fictional PR for the oppotunity to read Sweet Like Honey before its release in mid March <3
This book stole my breath away. The small town romance / country romance genre is not usually my plum jam, but I ATE this up so quickly I think I may have just found the perfect introdution to the genre! As a fantasy/Sci-fi/Dystopian reader this was such a shock to the system, in all the right ways, as well as a refreshing change of pace! A breathtaking and relatebale debut that has me craving more about Gumtree Valley with it's interesting and relatable characters!
J.F. Russell has in my opinion nailed scene setting in this book, I really felt like I was there in Gumtree Valley with the characters and feeling what they felt. I loved seeing PCOS representation from our FMC and the honesty of how she delt with it along with giving us real life Facts/information about it! I also adored this book for its pov from Colton's POV, the struggle of fame and family and figuring out whats best for them. We dive into the reality of the sport of bull riding as well which was wonderful to learn a little more about.
I find that the Main characters are relatable in one way or another and you really get sucked into their emotianal sturggles but you also reap the rewards and satisfaction of their successes <3 I'm IN LOVE with the side characters! I became super attached to Ellie-May and the Older Hayes brother Beau and am crossing my fingers and toes we may get to see them again in the future <3 We love an alternative styled queen with an out there personality and a Grumpy soft bear of a man who struggles with his own issues but is truely kind hearted!!!
All in all this was a 5 star read for me! I LOVE J.F. Russells writting style, the thought put into her characetrs - Main and Side - and the familiarity of our home country published for the rest of the world to see <3 I'll be eagrly awaiting the next project J.F. Russell takes on and cannot wait to see how she fairs in the future <3

firstly, i’d like to say a massive thank you as this was my first ARC ever ! i loved the premise of the book and was so excited when i got the email to read it in advance ! 🥹💖
for me, some parts of this were really tough to read - but i’m glad i did. similar to honey, i mostly grew up in regional queensland with a rough family history and i suffer the same debilitating condition, pcos. other aspects to honey’s story also really hit home, and at one point i nearly had to double check i was reading a novel and not an old diary entry. i would definitely recommend checking the content warnings beforehand, just in case.
i didn’t know how to rate this because on one hand, it was quite predictable and kinda felt like the same story i’ve read before just this time with cowboy boots. despite the similarities between myself and honey, i found it difficult to connect to the story and characters in some parts. the formatting/writing/sentence structure was a bit off and i noticed some inconsistencies within the storyline, but that’s just me being nitpicky.
on the other hand, there were scenes that were just done so well. the writing was hit or miss, but when it hit? oh boy it HIT. the other characters, especially the fmc’s bestie, were fun and i loved how so many types of people were represented and welcomed in a small town. i also appreciated how true to ‘aussie small town’ the dialogue was. non-australian readers might need some help translating but i enjoyed every little lingo drop. also how do i sign up to honey’s bookclub bc yes please??
overall, i found myself rooting for two dumb kids who were just trying to do the right thing by the person they loved. seven years later, i was holding my breath waiting hoping they’d take their chance to make it right.
was this book perfect? not at all but this sweet small town cowboy romance has parked it’s dusty old v8 right in a special place in the car park of my heart 💖

A phenomenal debut effort from J.F. Russell. Thank you for the ARC!
This was a heartfelt, emotional, tender romance that wraps you up in the world Gumtree Valley - and you'll never want to leave. If you love small town romances, cozy characters and a tension filled love story that claws at your heartstrings - look no further.
Honey and Colton. Childhood sweethearts who were heading down the aisle, except he destroys her heart when he leaves their small town for the competitive world of bull riding in the US. Now, after 7 years, he's back in town to help his father heal from a horrible farm accident, except Honey is now with his brother, Beau - and off-limits, despite the heat that clearly persists between them.
When reviewing books - I always look for what makes a book special. There is a real vibe and tension building off the passion packed love triangle that is Beau, Honey and Colton. I've read other books where they battle over the FMC, but this one is so personal and runs so deep, because of the complicated sibling history. Beau is a good guy here, caught in between and the reader can feel Honey's palpable struggle in still wanting Colton, when Beau is everything she needs.
There is also the animal-human relationships. Some really beautiful writing here on cowboys/riders and how they tame their wild animals. It's written in good depth that just makes the setting feel more real and tangible. I pretty much go weak in the knees for some good scene setting.
There is a good degree of Australian in this book - which I thoroughly enjoyed - and makes it all the more special. I feel like there is a Beau book brewing and if yes, I will be first in line for it....
“Okay, cowboy. Show me how you handle the wild ones.”
Honey, is a bookstore owner in a small country town who is trying to make it work with her first true love’s brother so she can settle down and have the family she’s been craving 🤷🏼♀️ and is professional bull rider and resident hottie, Colton Hayes trying to make it big in the US or hiding from his past? JF Russell, you had me at hot Aussie bull rider 🥵 Where is Gumtree Valley? Asking for a friend 🙈 Might get the girls together and go roadtripping 😮💨
This was sooo refreshing and relatable for so many women 🩷 Absolutely adored Honey and the Hayes fam. Loved the Aussie slang used, as well as the typical Australian traditions i.e sitting down for a steak, chips and mushroom gravy, paired with a beer at the pub for lunch. However, a personal favorite - grabbing a chicken and cheese sausage from the servo 😏 It made this really fun to read.
Obviously it was a big part of the story but I thought Honey was a little selfish not ripping the bandaid off sooner with Beau. But on the other hand, I also thought Beau was a little bratty and entitled. Didn’t take a scientist to work out that dating your brother’s ex wasn’t going to work out 🙈 Particularly, when there was still an epic amount of feelings and tension between Colton and Honey! It did take me a little longer to make the connection with Colton. His character building was definitely a little slower.
It’s a really great allrounder that includes bookstores and book clubs, bestfriends and bull riders. JF Russell, I look forward to reading your next book 🩷
🐮 small-town 🐮 cowboy romance 🐮 family grief 🐮 second chance 🐮 childhood sweethearts 🐮 ex-boyfriends brother 🐮 Australian author & setting 🐮 fertility struggles 🐮 miscarriage
This was a really well written story that had irritating moments, heartbreaking moments, frustrating moments, and beyond precious moments. The characters are likeable and their behaviour & choices are believable.
Honey lives in a small Australian town. She owns the local bookstore, creates social media content and works with authors.
Colton lives in the States after leaving his small Australian town at 19. He is a professional bull rider who enjoys his life riding bulls and buckle bunnies.
Honey & Colton dated in high school, got engaged after they graduated and then broke up in a very ugly way when Colton left to pursue his bull riding dreams in the States.
Honey is now dating Colton's brother, Beau. Colton is back in town because his dad got hurt. Things get uncomfortable, awkward and difficult. And they stay that way for a substantial amount of time.
The love triangle between Honey and Beau and Colton was tough. Beau deserved better. Kids, nobody wins when people pretend to love. It is so hard watching people you like, even fictional people, do stuff that you know is stupid. Sigh.
I recommend checking out the content warnings just to make sure you are okay with everything that is discussed as there are some heavy topics. Important but heavy. And sometimes language about some topics is from a place of trauma and pain, so may not be the most sensitive.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to have been part of Sweet Like Honey's ARC team. This book was interesting, challenging and beautiful. I look forward to seeing what JF Russell does next!
My first time reading cowboy romance, This book is set in a small town in rural Australia and was a beautiful story, with second chance childhood sweethearts. Colton and Honey grew up together as kids, Colton asked Honey to marry him when they were just 19 years old. 6 months later he leaves Honey to pursue his career in bull riding. He moves to America. Honey is heart broken, then starts dating Colton’s older brother Beau. She thinks She’s in love with Beau, but as time goes on it looks like he don’t have time for her, Phone calls were a thing of the past, there was no point when their conversations were distracted and stilted. Their text messages weren’t much better. The emoji were gone—no more hearts, no more kissing faces. And seeing each other in person? Non-existent. Beau was always busy, as she was. The spark has gone. We kind of just play the couple act like a chore. Beau doesn’t like the history Honey has with his brother Colton and makes her feel guilty for something that can’t be changed. Then 7 years later Coltin returns home cause his father had an accident on the farm. Things get shaken up. The Brothers start fighting. Beau struggles with his insecurity about him and Honey, He also gets jealous of his brother. When Beau and Honey go splt-ville, Somehow Honey and Coltin make their relationship work. This is made for an emotional and compelling setup. The storyline kept me engaged, the laughter, tears the drama. Just wow.
J.F. Russell really pulls you into the book and Gumtree Valley truly felt alive on the page. The atmosphere was so rich and immersive that it became its own character in the story, seamlessly woven into every moment.
Honey was such a refreshing FMC. Her struggles with PCOS, body image, and self-worth added real depth to her character. She wasn’t effortlessly perfect—she was real, learning to embrace herself despite insecurities. The honesty in her journey made her so easy to connect with. Colton, on the other hand, had all the broody cowboy energy. He carried a lot of guilt from his past, and his dynamic with Honey had years of tension built up between them. Their second-chance romance was filled with longing, heartbreak, and just the right amount of angst.
The past-and-present storytelling was done beautifully, layering in history that made every moment between them feel earned. While the love triangle with Beau brought plenty of drama, it did take some attention away from Honey and Colton’s present-day connection. Beau deserved better, and his story needs to be told.
This book was emotional, atmospheric, and full of all the small-town, cowboy romance charm. The storytelling had me fully invested from start to finish, making me feel every moment along the way.
Read if you like: 🐎 Small-town romance 💔 Second-chance childhood sweethearts 📖 Bull rider x bookstore owner 🔥 Love triangles with feelings 🌾 Stories that bring the setting to life
WARNING: this is the kind of slow burn book that you will avoid all responsibilities in order to finish.
I am absolutely in love with Honey and Colton’s story and how the passion never really died. Honey comes from a very broken background of child neglect and drug abuse by her parents. She moves in with her grandparents at a young age and at some point developed a crush or two on the boys next door.
Now this book is not a naughty throuple kind of deal, sorry if that’s what you’re into, but instead it’s a small town cowboy love triangle that will make you cry, gasp, and lose sleep at night. The author has written so well that you will feel the same passion, guilt, and anger of the characters. This book will have you quite literally on the edge of this small towns love drama.
I read this as an ARC and I didn’t expect to fall so much in love with this book, I will definitely be buying my trophy hard copy on release day. I haven’t fallen in love with a book like this since reading Kandi Steiners A Love Letter to Whiskey last year.
Another note to mention is that a PCOS girlie myself, I was very relieved that I am not the only almost 30 something worried that I need to hurry up and have more babies before my cystic ovaries try to take that hope from me.
I received this book, in exchange for an honest review from the author. I truly loved this one and it is perfect for spring. The book releases March 14th 2025!!
If you want an Australian rancher / cowboy and a book girlie you gotta read this book!! Colton and Honey’s story was a breath of fresh air in the midst of so many cowboy and rancher romances. It was a slowburn romance with a slight love triangle. But it is all worth it in the end. This book does deal with our FMC having PCOS and it is prevelant throughout the novel. It is also not just a mention once or twice on page and never talked about again. It is a part of Honey as a character and it truly felt special as a fellow PCOS girlie. Honey is an FMC that I can truly feel seen with, she runs a book story and has a book club. She really felt like a girl that you want to be friends with. Even though she went through so much in her life. I just wanted to hug her when a certain secret gets revealed. It made me emotional. Colton was definitely an MMC that you really want to root for. His journey throughout the book and how he definitely grew made me feel things. He was super sweet, and his love for Honey got me especially considering this past.
Sweet Like Honey is a story of a bookstore owner named Honey struggling with PCOS and wanting to have a family of her own before it’s all too late. When I started reading this book, I was immediately softened with the way PCOS was represented in it, along with other heavy topics that you might want to check out before reading this book. But, despite the heavy topics, the MMC was able to carry the story (for me), and the way he was willing to be better to start again with her. I also feel for the FMC, Honey, who lived her life full of uncertainties and fears, and it’s scary how I relate to her when I read this book.
The more I think about this book, the more I’m liking it. Colton is a book boyfriend, and I loved how he owned the mistakes he committed when he was a kid and really changed himself not just for him but for Honey, too. This book is a little heavy for me, but the characters along with the ending made it bearable, and I actually liked how it ended. Some words that I’ll surely remember from this book are “It’s bullshit. How two people can be so right for each other, only for it to end that way.” and “Love wasn’t always enough to make someone stay.” It felt like these words stabbed my heart and I liked that. 😁
thank you so much to j.f. russell & fictional pr for the arc review. i am so grateful for the opportunity 🫶🏼
tropes: second chance, childhood sweethearts, bull rider x bookstore owner, cowboy romance, small town romance
rating: 4 ⭐️ spice: 2 🌶️
what a great debut novel! i really enjoyed this book. throughout this story it had me giggling kicking my legs, crying, and on the edge of my seat. the best way to hook me into a story is throw back chapters. i love getting a look into the characters past. one of my most favorite things about a book.
colton - i love a mmc glow up. seeing him go from a cocky bull rider to dropping everything for honey. talk about swoon 🥰
honey - i related to her so much as a pcos girlie myself. her story brought me to tears. her resilience is so admirable.
fav quote: “i undeerstood that all the pain and pining we’d suffered made us even more grateful for the second chance we’d been given.”
honorable mentions:
“hang on dorothy! we’re not in kansas anymore!” - as a kansas girlie, i’m here for the wizard of oz reference
“in front of me stood an american cowboy, the type that made authors like elsie silver rich.” - YES loved this quote
J.F Russell delivers a heartfelt, slow-burn romance in Sweet Like Honey, a story that is both cozy and emotionally rich. From the first page, I was drawn into the warmth of the small-town setting, where love, second chances, and personal growth intertwine beautifully.
The characters feel real and layered, each carrying their own burdens and desires. The chemistry between the leads builds gradually, making every stolen glance and heartfelt conversation feel meaningful. She has a way of writing romance that feels natural, never forced, allowing the emotional depth to shine.
What stood out to me most was the way the story balanced lighthearted moments with deeper emotional stakes. It’s a book that makes you smile, but also tugs at your heart in the best way. The writing is smooth and engaging, and I found myself flying through the pages, eager to see how everything would unfold.
If you love small-town romances with characters you can root for and a romance that feels like a warm hug, Sweet Like Honey is definitely worth picking up.
A heartfelt, slow-burn romance with all the warmth of its title. Sweet, emotional, and full of charm.
This is my honest opinion for the ARC copy I received. Thank you J.F. and Fictional PR for this opportunity.
Being someone with a chronic illness, it's a dream of mine to own and run a smutty romance bookstore café, which is one of the reasons I jumped at the chance to apply for this ARC. This is a second chance romance set in the Aussie countryside, where she got away after Colton chose his career over her.
Colton is back because of a family emergency, and he’s still in love with her while she’s dating someone else. I don’t have PCOS thankfully, but as someone who is dealing with monstrous body hair, weight gain, and acne since puberty (signs of PCOS but probably just part of my illness), I could relate to Honey a lot. 😩 I really wished a certain part happened sooner than later. And as a dark romance reader, the spice was fluffy. 🔥
Ellie-May is a friend every girl deserves. I hope she finds her HEA. J.F. gave a beautiful ending to the couple in this book. Make sure you check the CW!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
This book was just dragging. I tried twice to get back into it, but I just couldn't make myself keep reading.
The love triangle in this is just annoying. Honey and Colton are so obviously not over each other, but Colton won't stop talking about all the chicks he could easily pull, and Honey keeps hooking up with and going on dates with her boyfriend Beau (who happens to be Colton's older brother...) right in front of Colton's face. No bro code in this family, apparently. And Beau is just terrified Honey is going to leave him for his brother, but he's also fully checked out of the relationship so he's doing nothing to actually prevent it, and even admitted that he only proposed to her a while before the book picks up so that he could "lock her down"... Yup, direct quote. 🤢
The characters are just immature, insecure, and boring. Don't think I'll be going back to this one, which is a bummer because it has all of the elements that I usually like in a book, but I just cannot root for any of the characters.
*I received an advanced copy of this book and am leaving an honest review.
Sweet Like Honey by J.F. Russell is a breathtaking journey into love, healing, and the beauty of second chances. From the first page, I was completely captivated by the heartfelt storytelling, complex characters, and their undeniable chemistry between. Russell's writing is sharp and rich with emotion, effortlessly drawing readers into this unforgettable love story.
The plot weaves a perfect balance of heartache and hope, with moments of vulnerability that felt so real and relatable. The way Russell explores their pasts and personal struggles, while leading them to a place of redemption and love, is incredibly moving.
What I loved most was the way the book made me feel—I laughed, I cried, and I rooted for these characters every step of the way. The romance is swoon-worthy, but it’s the emotional depth and raw authenticity that really makes this book stand out.
Sweet Like Honey is a story of resilience, of finding joy in the small moments, and of love that heals and transforms. It’s the perfect read for anyone who loves heartfelt romance with substance. If you’re looking for a book that will make you feel all the things, then this is must-read.
Sometimes, you just know a book is going to be a hit, and Sweet Like Honey had me hooked before I even turned the first page. The cover? Stunning. The tropes? I’m SAT. I went in with high hopes, this one did not let me down.
I laughed, swooned, rolled my eyes, and cried. There’s not a single emotion this book didn’t wring out of me. J.F. Russell has such a way with words, her writing is just so special. Sometimes, I find romances set in Australia can feel a little gimmicky to me, but the way she wove the scenery and culture seamlessly into every page was absolute perfection.
And let’s talk about Honey and Colton. THEY. WERE. EVERYTHING. I’m finally calling it—I’m a second-chance romance girly through and through, and the pining in this book sent me feral. The longing, the tension, the slow build… it was all done so well, and I felt every bit of it.
