This is the second horse book I have read by this author and I definitely like this one more. I found the story more interesting and I actually think there was more horse related stuff in here too. In fact I found a few of the horse games in here eye opening! I am still a new rider and while I am familiar with the basic concepts of dressage, jumping, showing and so on the idea of playing various games on horseback for fun is new to me. And no, I don't mean stuff like polo!
So I found myself relating very well to the main female character in here, Caitlin. She is quiet, she sees her pony Jade as her best friend and she doesn't care for all the social drama that is going on at Beacon Lodge - the horse camp she is staying at. And there is a lot of social drama! In fact that drama includes a mystery just like the previous book did.
The mystery in here is more low key than in the previous book I read - Mystery at Black Horse Farm. It starts out with lots of noise and arguments and it slowly builds until you realize something much larger is going on. And sometimes during this Caitlin finds herself in a few very uncomfortable positions and she is unsure what to do. She is not the most sociable person and she has self doubts as well. I think that makes her very real. But she alway puts her pony Jade first.
And Caitlin and Jade have a phenomenal relationship! Jade follows her without a lead and halter. Plus she is smart too!
Besides the idea of horse games in here I also liked how eager the horses were to do stuff. They looked forward to racing or swimming in the sea. Well, not all of them! At least one horse wanted nothing to do with that swooshing salty tide and didn't trust it at all which is very realistic. Just so many great details in here about horses.
I did guess the criminal in here rather easily. I had thought it was obvious. I don't know if it will be that way for everyone though.
And I love the cover image too!
Will definitely read more horse stories by this author!
