Rebecca Roth, a biology scientist, is working on a vaccine for the deadliest virus known. When computers are hacked and the lab is in danger, she calls in Secure Watch. Best person on the team for this job- Iris Knowles- neurodivergent since suffering a TBI as a child. Dive in this superbly written story of intrigue with twists, turns and red herrings everywhere as they try to recover the lab and run into more danger. Iris also has a lot of self-discovery and growing as she works valiantly to help save the world. Great characters and storyline- fantastically written by Katie Mettner- highly recommended.

Thank you NetGalley and the Publisher for the Arc in exchange for an honest review!

The story was very fast paced. Usually, I don’t like this, because it makes it seem unrealistic, at least in terms of romance. However, I think it worked for this storyline. I believe due to the nature of the plot and also due to the fact that I just read a pretty hefty book that was slower pace, so the faster pace was a breath of fresh air. It was Insta Love, but I actually believed it, which is not typical of me.

While it was a quick read, it was action packed and kept me wanting more. I didn’t see a lot of the plot twists coming and I loved that. I would’ve loved an epilogue to see more into the future, but that’s just a personal preference.

While I don’t mind that it was quick and fast paced, I do wish it was a little longer. But other than that, it was a great, suspenseful read with a beautiful and understanding romance.

I was surprise who is the culprit. This is a must read book. Love every moment.

This is another amazing book by Katie. 2 woman who got locked in trying to save the world from a deadly virus being released ended up being a great match for each other. Iris has a Tbi and other issues that she thought she could not overcome but when you are with the right person things can change. Bec started working in a lab and was blindsided by what her boss was doing. This is definitely a 5 star must read.

Iris, who had a traumatic brain injury at 7 years old has to fight anxiety and fear, but when she’s with Bec, who had to leave her community to be the person she was meant to be, she’s calm and feels safe. As soon as they touched they knew they had found their person. This story had action and romance. I received a free copy of this book and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Review:
When I first picked up "Deadly Security Breach," I was immediately drawn into the world of Secure Watch. This is the third book in the series by Katie Mettner, and for someone who is very picky when it comes to reading romantic suspense, I will admit that this book hit all the right notes. The story follows Iris Knowles, a brilliant cybersecurity expert who, despite a traumatic brain injury that has left her with impairments, finds herself at the heart of an epic threat. Her mission is to restore a hacked computer system in a remote facility that is being used to create vaccines for new viruses. It’s here that she meets scientist Rebecca Roth, AKA Bec, who has been working on a vaccine for Ignis Cerebri- the deadliest virus Bec had ever encountered - labeled as a “biological weapon of Armageddon proportions.” From the moment Iris and Bec meet, there is undeniable chemistry, and their shared sense of not quite belonging anywhere sets the stage for an intense and gripping narrative.
Katie Mettner excels in character development, and this is particularly evident in how she crafts Iris Knowles. Iris's journey of self-discovery and acceptance is beautifully portrayed. Her struggle with her disability and the ensuing transformation are both inspiring and realistic. The character of Bec complements Iris perfectly, and watching their relationship evolve from professional collaboration to something deeper adds a touch of warmth to the suspenseful plot. Their emotional journey is a testament to the well-developed, complex characters Katie Mettner is known for, making them easy to root for.
The supporting characters in "Deadly Security Breach" are just as compelling. They add depth to the narrative and enrich the dynamics within the Secure Inc. family. This interconnectedness with characters from a previous series, as a crossover, creates a sense of continuity that fans will appreciate. The secondary characters don't just fade into the background; instead, they enhance the storyline and contribute to the tension and excitement that keep the pages turning.
The plot of "Deadly Security Breach" is filled with suspense and intrigue, with unexpected twists that kept me pondering and guessing. The pacing is impeccable, with the action unfolding at just the right speed to maintain tension and suspense. Katie Mettner skillfully weaves in subplots that complement the main storyline, including the romantic subplot between Iris and Bec. The romantic conflict and chemistry between the two leads add a layer of emotional depth, making the stakes feel even higher.
Katie Mettner’s use of descriptive language is another highlight of the book. The vivid details paint a clear picture of the settings, from the main lab to the more intimate moments between the characters. This attention to detail not only helps in visualizing the scenes but also adds to the intellectual engagement. The story feels grounded in reality, which makes the threat of the deadly virus all the more chilling and thought-provoking, believing that maybe this story may not be all that far from the truth.
Overall, "Deadly Security Breach" is a thrilling and emotionally charged read that exceeded my expectations. The combination of a suspenseful plot, well-rounded characters, and bursts of romance makes it a compelling book that I couldn't put down. It's a perfect read for anyone who loves romantic suspense, and I highly recommend it to those looking for a story that will keep them on the edge of their seat. If you're seeking thrills and a gripping narrative, this book is a must-read.

thank you to netgalley and Harlequin for the arc of this incredible book 🥹🥹
I ADORE Iris Knowles and Dr. Rebecca Roth so much. the growth of each of the characters individually and together was so well written. iris really touched me in so many ways with her struggles, and it was really cool to be able to relate to a character so much. and don't even get me started on how Bec made Iris feel so seen and safe from the beginning; it was so sweet to watch their love story develop right in front of my eyes!
The twists and suspense in this one were soooo good. I never would have expected that a scientist in charge of a super secure "government" lab would manage to double cross everyone the way he did, but dang, he was a real piece of work. Secure Watch, led by Cal and Mina, who we met in the first series, with the help of Iris and a few others, managed to find out that Walter, Bec's boss, had planned his creation and sale of the most deadly virus Bec has ever come in contact with. He purposely made the virus, had 3 separate buyers, and faked a kidnapping to get the money he wanted. and in that whole mess, Bec and Iris found each other and fell in love- which was something Iris didn't know she was capable of.
Katie has done it once again- she has written an inclusive, amazing love story filled with suspense and danger and twists. I will never get over how much I love her books.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book

the storyline was intriguing a deadly virus and kidnappers....

when dr roth calls for help from her underground shelter where she has been working on a deadly virus the team race against time ....

iris is an expert on computers and knows she can help what shes not good at is leaving her work space to do that... but as the team needed on the ground she had no choice....

normally in situations like this iris can shut down but there is something about dr roth that calls to her and iris wants to help and though her traumatic brain injury causes all sorts of issues they seem to disappear whenever she is with dr roth....

its an interesting storyline though i had guessed the who what and where early on... and the storyline between iris and dr roth wasnt to bad... its not a bad storyline its one to read inbetween the heavier books as this is very light and wont give you nightmares

I really enjoyed reading this story with two strong female characters. Dr. Rebecca Roth, an intelligent scientist, and Iris Knowles, a skilled cyber specialist who suffered a TBI as a child, are two determined women, each with a complicated and painful past that they must each come to terms with.

Working together, Dr. Roth and Iris face a high-stakes security breach that threatens more than just themselves with deadly chemicals, the entire world is at risk of exposure if they fail. As they face danger and deception from unexpected sources, their resilience, intelligence, and new found love for each other are put to the ultimate test. Will this love for each other be enough to overcome so may obstacles? If you enjoy reading intrigue with a few unexpected twists and a sweet love story (f/f), then you'll really enjoy this book, another great addition to the series.

Dr. Rebecca Roth has spent her entire life catching up. Born into an Amish community, her future ambitions were already limited by strict religious doctrine that favors the patriarchy, allowing women to only assume the traditional roles they have held for generations, most of which are in support of the traditional core family and its values. Men provide for their families while women support them and raise their families, adhering to the Ordnung established by the elders of their community. And while Bec’s intellectual curiosity is enough to make her doubt the way of life she’s been born into, her undeniable attraction to the ladies in her settlement was something she simply couldn’t deny.

When it was Bec’s turn for Rumspringa, the rite of passage afforded Amish teenagers to fully explore the outside world before committing to the rigid lifestyle of their elders, her decision was difficult but clear.

Throwing herself into scientific pursuits, she is gratified to be named the lead scientist spearheading efforts to find a vaccine to a virus capable of reducing the world’s population by half. Operating out of a remote laboratory in North Dakota, Bec immerses herself in her important work until one morning, everything goes left of center. In the matter of just a few seconds, all systems are offline and her supervisor has been kidnapped at gunpoint. Can Bec marshal the resources necessary to bring systems back online and thwart the nefarious goals of the rogue agents who kidnapped her boss?

Enter Secure Watch.

Cal Newfellow and his team of specialized experts race to the scene to contain the situation before it becomes unstoppable. This particular assignment will require the talent of Iris Knowles. Her coding skills make her the obvious choice, but her neurodivergence makes leaving home base challenging to say the least. She can be blunt as a hammer and is prone to panic with too much outside stimulation. However, after reading the case file and understanding its lethal ramifications, she feels compelled to show Cal she is a team player and agrees. She hits the road with the Secure Watch team, understanding her participation cannot be handled remotely. Besides, something about the photo of the lead biologist stirs something within, and Iris will do anything to restore order to this beautiful stranger’s life.

Sparks fly immediately, and soon, Bec and Iris are paired up at the facility to bring systems back online and patch them against future intrusion while the rest of the team try to identify who is responsible for an attack of the deadliest variety on an unsuspecting world. As clues turn the investigation inward, it’s nearly impossible to trust anyone. The clock is ticking…

Inside a nightmare scenario, Mettner throws us one of her most touching love stories yet. Neither Rebecca Roth nor Iris Knowles were looking for love when it fell right into their paths. Each woman complements the other in unexpected ways, and Iris, in particular, is startled to find herself increasingly at ease with someone she barely even knows. Whether they get the chance to explore these feelings remains to be seen. Getting things locked back down is the priority, and time is NOT on their side.

Deadly Security Breach is a high-octane, page-turner with no shortage of unpredictable action, and the love story blossoming at its center may be my favorite of all the “Secure” books that Mettner has released. It’s honest and unapologetic; exactly the sort of love that we ALL hope to find.

Grab a copy and enjoy. And this is coming from a guy who doesn’t even LIKE romance…😄

Deadly Security is the 3rd book in the Secure Watch Series by Katie Mettner.

Even if you don’t understand computers, you’ll understand what’s going on and what’s happening in this book. Katie ensured that she gave us all the background information that we needed and all the descriptions are fitting and I really don’t have a need to repeat it here.

In this book we follow two main characters. Rebecca (Becca) and Iris, they are surrounded by a lot of secondary characters who seamlessly fit into the story. And we find that each character plays their own important role in the story, yet Rebecca and Iris remain the central characters in the story, and this story really does revolve around the two of them.

We learn that both Rebecca and Iris have their own background stories that we learn throughout the story and it’s that background that have made them the women they are today. I loved the push and pull between them despite all the harrowing events that were surrounding them.

I have to give Katie a lot of credit for her writing style. I found that within the first chapter of this book I was pulled in so deeply that I was simply enthralled and I couldn’t put it down and I just couldn’t put this book down. I had this dire need to know what was going to happen next. Katie did a stunning job with how fast paced this book is and you find that in some areas you have to really pay attention so you don’t miss anything.

Part way through this book I kind of thought that that I knew who the guilty party was, but Katie did a great job of throwing in twists and turns that kept you guessing and wondering what was really going on and if you were really right about who was really guilty. And then, just when you thought that the entire crisis had been averted, yet another one cropped up and this ensured you were enthralled and kept you reading.

I promise you, if you pick up this book you’re going to love reading this book just as much as I did.

Deadly Security Breach is the third title in Katie Mettner’s Secure Watch series, and delivers a tense, danger-filled Romantic Suspense story with a plot you’ll devour and a couple you’ll be rooting for to find their future together… once they save the world, that is.

Iris is a talented cybersecurity expert who suffered a traumatic brain injury and is worried that the results of that injury will interfere with her ability to track down a deadly virus that could have catastrophic results if not stopped. She’s accustomed to feeling alone in a crowded room, but that will change once she meets Bec. Rebecca (Bec) is a dedicated scientist working on stopping a virus that can only be described as world-ending. She’s left her world behind to be her true self, and while that’s often a lonely feeling, she’s content for the most part. The instant attraction between them when Iris and Bec meet is electrifying, and the reader does not doubt that they belong together. But. They have a virus to contain, a villain so vile to stop, and danger at every turn to be faced before that ultimate happy ending can be theirs.

I enjoyed Iris and Bec’s story so much. The intensity of the danger faced kept me on edge throughout their story. As always with a Katie Mettner novel, the descriptions of events and places put me right into the danger zone with her characters. I loved seeing familiar faces from the Secure One series. I immerse myself more deeply in the action when the connected world actually… well, connects in a way that makes sense and creates an even more complex feel to the story. If you love a well-written romance full of danger, tender moments, passion, and a plot that will keep you engaged until the final word… then have I got a book for you. I’d not hesitate to recommend this one, and cannot wait for more from this author.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley, and I sincerely thank the author or publishing house for their trust. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

Katie Mettner is a new author to me but after reading this book I will be looking for more of her work!
You don’t even need to know about computers to understand what is going on in this book!! (LOL) The background the author gave in the description is fitting and I have no need to repeat it here.

There are two main characters in this book, Rebecca (Becca) and Iris who are surrounded by many secondary characters who seamlessly fit very well into the story, each character plays an important role, yet Becca and Iris are central in this book, and the story revolves around them.

Both Becca and Iris have background stories throughout the book that have made them the women they are today in this book. I loved the push and pull between them despite the harrowing events they are involved in.

Once you start reading, you don’t want to put the book down, you have to keep turning the pages to see what’s going to happen next! It’s fast-paced in some areas and you won’t want to miss anything.

I had a suspicion of who the guilty party was midway through the book, but the author kept putting twists and turns throughout the book to keep you wondering. Just when you thought the crisis was averted, another one cropped up which kept you engaged in reading.

You will enjoy reading this book as much as I have, so pick it up, you won’t regret it.

I received an ARC from the author.

I know it's a ARC, but the formatting is weirdly bad. Also, scene breaks aren't there a lot of the time.

Rebecca Roth is lead researcher at The Research Center of the Advancement of Biogenics and lives at the facility. Their main project is developing a vaccine to a dangerous virus that infects the brain.

Iris Knowles works for a security company, and is sent to help. She us less than thrilled about going, as she's disabled and has anxiety due to childhood injuries. When a staffer is kidnapped, the situation gets worse.

Bec is intrigued by Iris, who is interested in her, but the emergency is the priority. As Iris hacks the malware and brings systems online, her boss Mina realizes it might be a inside job.

After a short period they think it's Bec, they realize it might be her boss Walter, along with their lab assistant, who used a assumed name to get the job.

Then the other baddies show up, kidnapping Bec.

(The characters mention they brought the facility security back up. So how do they waltz in? Sloppy writing.)

Bec talks the baddies into taking her somewhere Iris knows, the security team rescues her after, at one point, finding Walter and the lab assistant dead. Rescue, wrap up...

3 stars, might give it 3.5 if the formatting issues are fixed in publishing.

The Third installment of the secure watch series did not disappoint. It can be read as a stand-alone, because even though it does have the team included, this particular story keeps the focus on the two lead characters.

A deadly virus facility has been hacked, and a kidnapping takes place. The threat to the world is real. Iris and Rebecca (Bec) are two people with a chemistry that sparks at first sight. A TBI that dictates a lot of what Iris can handle in life is the focus, but as the story unfolds it highlights the major capabilities that Iris is very skilled at what she does. She is in a race against time to contain the virus before the hackers can do more damage. Rebecca is the person that records data and in the process of creating a cure. These two strong, brave women join forces to keep the world safe, so Secure Watch can find and stop the culprits.

Katie Mettner has created a wonderful series with great characters. The pages keep turning because the plot and characters are so real to us readers you just can't put the book down. I highly recommend this series and this wonderful author who keeps us entertained. Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin for the arc of this great book!

good, fast-paced romantic suspense
This was a fast-paced, action and cyber-security packed f/f romantic suspense. Though part of a series it can be read easily as stand-alone
I liked the premise: A deadly virus, a cyber-attack to get at it and a tight-knit group of security specialists who come to the rescue and a setting in North Dakota, off-the-grid. The attack and the countermeasures were very well fleshed out and believable. I loved the fast pace and the thrill of the chase.
It was very enjoyable to see a team smoothly acting together and Iris, the neurodivergent main character and hacker was a great addition to the story. I loved to see a female scientist, Dr. Rebecca Roth, as the other main character, knowledgeable, courageous and kind. The romance was a bit short, but sweet nevertheless. A thumbs up for this book.

I received an ARC via netgalley. The review is left voluntarily.

I love reading Katie Mettner‘s books, and Deadly Security Breach (Secure Watch, #3) is no exception! It features two strong female characters: Dr. Rebecca Roth (Bec), a brilliant scientist, and Iris Knowles, a highly-skilled cyber specialist. Iris has suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a 7-year-old child and Bec who must leave her family and Amish lifestyle to remain true to herself. They find each other in this mission; and must learn to trust the other to solve the situation of a deadly virus which could potentially wipe out humanity and who’s trying to purchase this time bomb. With the Secure One team’s support, these women try to discover who’s behind this dastardly deed and how they can remain true to their tender love story.

Ms. Mettner proudly offers us another inclusive story and Harlequin’s first female love/intrigue story. It’s a winner! (Personally, I hope these characters return.)

The world is in danger of the deadliest virus known to mankind and when Dr Rebecca Roth realizes that the virus is being compromised with the threat of being released, she knows she needs help and the only ones to call is the Secure Inc. team which is part of the Secure Watch and Secure One team. . Iris Knowles, is very good at her job at Secure Inc. as long as she isn’t under pressure. An early childhood injury caused a brain injury as well as physical injuries, and she has severe anxiety, and prefers to work alone. Now, she is the best person to help Dr Roth, and she is required to travel to the lab. Anxiety can be her worst enemy if she isn’t comfortable with Dr. Roth. This book is so good and full of twists, turns, and unanswered questions, and a security that neither woman expected! This book definitely earns five star!

(4.5) What a scary thought, and yet I imagine its happening in secret all over the world. Intrigue, suspense and romance in a secret location. When a computer system is hacked Iris from Secure Watch is called in to assist. It's does not leave the compound due to a TBI from her childhood. Deadly Security Breach is a first for Iris and for Bec (Rebecca). It was a first for me too, but I think Katie handled their romance with class and feeling. Even though some of the issues were repeated due to the TBI I think its showing reality, that it must be explained and repeated again and again especially where there is a new face. Two of the perps I guessed, but how it all played out, and a third were surprises, which is always a win. Thank you the advanced copy. I freely share my honest thoughts and opinions. #DeadlySecurityBreach #SecureWatch #KatieMettner #Harlequin #NetGalley

Y’ALL… Deadly Security Breach is pure adrenaline with a side of swoon 💥💻❤️. Iris, a cybersecurity genius battling a traumatic brain injury, is thrown into a global virus meltdown… and sparks fly the instant she meets scientist Bec. These two? Brains, bravery, and an attraction that hits harder than a virus alert 🚨🔥. Their romance is tender, fierce, and makes you root for them while the world literally burns around them.

Katie Mettner’s writing? Snappy, smart, and cinematic—tension so thick you can feel it in your bones, plus romance that doesn’t take a backseat. Iris + Bec = partnership goals, heartbreak-proof chemistry, and a code-cracking, virus-stopping thrill ride you cannot put down.

If you love smart, fearless women, romance that doesn’t take a backseat, and edge-of-your-seat suspense, this book just breached your heart and your TBR. 💥📚💖

✔Sapphic Book Bingo Challenge 2026 🌈✨: Main Board - Thriller/Suspense

4.5 stars. This is book three in a series but it’s the only sapphic one so of course this is the one that I started with. It can definitely be read as a standalone. I never was lost, there were some side characters that you can tell are probably from the previous books but that didn’t matter to me. This was so good. Intense as hell and the plot was fast paced and read like an action film and I mean that in the best way possible. It was seriously such an entertaining read.

Iris and Bec are both such intelligent characters and I really liked their romance. Since this is an Intrigue novel the romance really isn’t the main point but what’s there is really good between them because I like their chemistry a lot. It was great and I thought they were so good together.

Overall, this was awesome. Great writing, intriguing plot, and wonderful leads. Here’s to hoping for even more Harlequin sapphic romances!

Spice: 0.5/❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥(Very tame and vaguely described sex scene)

A deadly virus, a kidnapping, computer hacking, and a call for help bring Iris Knowles and other members of the Secure Watch team to a remote North Dakota location. Their mission is to regain control of the computer system, protect the virus, and find the kidnapped scientist. Iris isn’t comfortable around other people and has severe anxiety issues as a result of a traumatic brain injury when she was a child. But when she sees the video of scientist Rebecca Roth, she’s determined to overcome her fears and help Rebecca.

An edge-of-your-seat thriller that puts the team in danger, and possibly the world. This is an awesome series.

Katie really gives it her all with this one. I loved the storyline and the new characters. Their back stories make them the people they are and Rebecca's especially hits close to home( not my family but a friend of my daughters ). I love my kids unconditionally and no one could make me feel any different. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks this way, so when Rebecca has a choice to make, she does what is best for her well being. It's a good thing she did, or she would never have met Iris. They are so comforting to each other as time is ticking down on saving the world. See how they help each other and if the Secure Watch team can stop this deadly virus from being spread to all humanity!!! Amazing story - 5 stars 🤩

What a page turner! I just wanted to keep reading. Rebecca is the head Biology Scientist. She works at a lab where there is a deadly virus. Iris is a Cybersecurity Expert with Secure One. She suffered a traumatic brain injury when she was younger. Wait til you find out what happened!

Cyber hackers got into the computer system at the lab. Iris is brought in to figure out who it is and stop them. Dr. Hoerman was kidnapped when a blast hit. This did hurt Bec. Now it’s time to figure out this mystery before it’s too late. Will they be able to? In the process, it seems Iris and Bec are drawn together. They bond and feelings develop. Once everything is over and the hackers are possibly found, can they have a life together? Wait til you find out!

‘i prefer to call it understanding and acceptance.’

The stakes keep getting higher and higher with each threat Secure Inc faces and this time the fate of the world is in the hands of two women. Iris is a neurodivergent cyber security expert that works best alone but this time she doesn’t have a choice but to venture out of her comfort zone and into the field to help research scientist Bec, who is the lone woman standing at a hacked lab in the middle of no where with a deadly pathogen and an incompletely vaccine. With unseen foes coming at them from all sides now wouldn’t be the best time to explore a new relationship but these two make it work in an amazingly thrilling story. Well done!
