Mia is a British woman who loves Adventure but ends up a witness on the run and luckily she ran into Jack Brennan a guy from her past in the middle of nowhere far from home who is just the right person who could help her out.

I enjoyed this fast pace read there was just so much going on. I really enjoy getting to know the characters and seeing how they worked together to getting away from those were after her. I like a good second chance at romance and this book wasn't too much as someone who isn't a fan of reading books that have steamy scenes. Overall it's pretty good book I really enjoyed it.

Witness Protector is a solid romantic suspense book with a strong character focus. I loved being able to recognize Mia and Jack’s character growth by the end of the story. Second chance romances aren’t usually my favourite but I didn’t mind the reason things didn’t work out between them the first time. I really enjoyed Jack’s character in particular, he has depth to him throughout the book and I enjoyed seeing him learn to express his feelings. My favourite parts of the book were the action scenes and there’s a satisfying ending, which I was happy about! If you enjoy romantic suspense books with on the run and second chance tropes, you might enjoy Witness Protector!

Excellent adventure with romance, ala the custom for Harlequin books. A British woman seizes the opportunity for an oceanic adventure only to meet a beguiling fellow, who takes her back to Miami. Shocking events unspool and our heroine is on the run, finding refuge in a tiny town in the Ozarks of Arkansas. With help from an old flame, she escapes a horrific fate, with many a twist and turn. And lots of kissing.

Is this is kissing book, Grampa?? Oh, oh I don't mind so much. As you wish.

I am highly familiar with western Arkansas and Tulsa, OK and environs, and this book nails the beauty of the place and the people.

Great book!

Truly enjoyed this read. Great characters, especially liked Mia. I also enjoyed watching Jack's character evolve into someone complex, yet easy to like. I don't read a lot of romance, but this author's books are always a joy to read, and always have great characters.

A past. A tense present. And, a future to build on.

Loved Ranger Jack and Mia. Their past left scars that isn't easily overcome. Their present is filled with danger, doubt, and dreams. Their future is unveiling itself one moment at a time.

Jude Bayton is one of my favorite authors.

While I usually love second chance at love romances, and romantic suspense as well, I didn't find a lot to love about this novel for several reasons, and it is the first novel I've read by this author. While well-written, for this reader, it was just average, which is the I've given it a 3-star rating.

Mia (Emilia) Jones met Jack Brannon in England 10 years ago and fell in love with him, but her life was in England, Jack was on his way to becoming a U.S. National Park Ranger, and their brief one-month, summer love affair fizzled out, but neither ever really forget the other, even though it didn't end well.

Fast forward 10 years, and who should turn up as a waitress in a small town diner in Arkansas? Jack thought he was seeing double, (different hair color and fake American accent), but Emilia, now calling herself Mia is his waitress, although she denies it at first. After her parents' death in a house fire, Mia decides to tour the U.S, gets involved in a relationship with Carlos, but she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnessed a shooting and the murder of one of her friends at Carlos' clinic, because Carlos, whom she believed ran a legitimate ob/gyn clinic in Florida turned out to be involved in human trafficking. He wants her dead, so she's on the run, broke, terrified, and soon reveals her identity to Jack, who, while starting a new Ranger position in a new location, takes it upon himself to protect her.

What follows is your average girl in trouble, protective former boyfriend, romantic suspense novel, with the expected rekindled affair and enough danger and suspense to keep you reading, but Jack is still not over the loss of his brother in a car accident when he was 16 years old, and now he's in his thirties, and he lets his unwarranted guilt rule his life and his decisions in his thirties. Additionally, there wasn't much of a romance between these two main characters, and I never felt any real connection to them--again just average. It's another case of the bad guys vs. the good guys, with a number of mixed messages between the main characters, and it left this reader rather unsatisfied with its eventual HEA ending.

While Witness Protector wasn't a bad read, it wasn't a great one for this reader, and I'm guessing many romantic suspense fans may enjoy it more than I did.

I read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions stated are my own.

Jack and Emilia shared a brief but intense summer love affair that fizzled out badly—but neither ever truly forgot the other. Fast forward ten years, and Jack nearly thinks he’s seeing double when a waitress in a diner looks exactly like Emilia, only with different hair and a questionable American accent.

She is Emilia—now going by Mia, with dyed hair and a fake accent—and while there’s clear recognition between them, neither acknowledges it at first. Mia is visibly frightened, and when danger escalates, she finally tells Jack the truth: she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnessed a shooting and a murder. The killer wants her dead, and she’s been on the run ever since—broke, terrified, and completely alone. Jack takes it upon himself to protect her, and from there the story delivers plenty of danger and suspense to keep the pages turning. Jack is also battling demons of his own, which become an integral part of the story as he works to keep Mia safe.

The suspense plot wraps up in a very satisfying way. Unfortunately, the same can’t quite be said for the romantic resolution. Jack and Mia’s relationship feels overly convoluted and somewhat surface-level, making the emotional ending between them less impactful than it could have been. That said, this is still a solid romantic suspense novel. The danger, pacing, and overall story are engaging, and despite my reservations about the romance, the book was enjoyable and satisfying overall.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for an advance copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving this honest, personal, and unbiased review.

Witness Protector is a standalone title by an author with an impressive backlist, but new to me. Frankly, I love adding new authors to my reading lists, and I’ll be looking into Ms. Bayton’s backlist soon. And this is her Harlequin debut, so a lot of firsts to celebrate… including an intensely suspenseful romance for Mia and Jack, who have a history that at their first meeting in a decade Mia is desperately trying to hide. Only when the terror she’s running from rears its ugly head again will she reluctantly turn to Jack with the truth she’d just denied. Mia witnessed something horrific, something she shouldn’t have seen. Now, she is on the run, literally, for her life, because if she’s ever found, death is the only way to silence her knowledge.

I enjoyed Mia and Jack’s second-chance, intensely dangerous romance. It’s well-written and intense, with enough danger and suspense to keep me flipping pages and fully engaged as I watch this couple find not only safety but also a way back to each other. Jack’s character growth was the stronger of the two. There are issues in his past that he simply needs to let go of, for the guilt he carries is unnecessarily destroying his future. The villain here is vile, and the danger to Mia is very real. If that sounds like your kind of Romantic Suspense, then you’d enjoy Witness Protector.

I am not a fan of 2nd chance romances where the MCs are not celibate and when there is a long separation. It doesn’t speak “love” or “romance” to me.

MCs met 10 years prior in England where MMC was on vacation and FMC lived there. They fell in love because MMC stated she was his first love. However, when the time came for him to go back home, he left to pursue his career and to keep a promise he made to his brother, thereby breaking her heart.

Anyway, FMC makes several attempts to call him & text him after their fight but he ghosts her. Then in the present, we learn that he had several relationships since her, including his recent one with his ex whom he broke up with a month prior after finding her cheating on him with an OM. He & OW dated & lived together for several years which was a long-term relationship for him.

As far as FMC went, after they broke up, her life didn't go as she wanted because she lost her family, her job and a mafia crazy lover she was seeing a few months prior, killed a woman in front of her and was going to kill her too but she got away and was on the run. Enter MMC to save her.

So as far as the romance portion went, it didn’t work for me for the reasons I mentioned above and the suspense portion unfortunately did not hold my interest either.

However, I do recommend it to those who do not have pet peeves like me. Thank you NetGalley and Publisher for the opportunity to provide a true and honest opinion.

It’s been a long time since I picked up a Harlequin novel, and reading Witness Protector by Jude Bayton felt a bit like slipping into a favorite pair of comfortable pajamas—familiar, cozy, and exactly what I needed. This romantic suspense delivers everything readers hope for: danger, emotional tension, and a rekindled love story that keeps the pages turning.

Mia Jones is a compelling heroine, thrust into a terrifying situation after witnessing a murder and finding herself stranded with nowhere safe to turn. Jack Brannon is the perfect counterpart—steady, protective, and still carrying unresolved feelings from their past. Their unexpected reunion adds an extra layer of emotion to the suspense, as old wounds and lingering attraction resurface under life-or-death circumstances.

The chemistry between Mia and Jack feels genuine, and their road-trip quest for answers gives the story momentum while allowing their relationship to rebuild naturally. Bayton balances the action with heartfelt moments, creating a story that is both exciting and satisfying.

Witness Protector is a fast, entertaining read that reminded me why Harlequin romantic suspense has such enduring appeal. If you enjoy second-chance romance wrapped in danger and intrigue, this one is definitely worth picking up.

If you like your romance with a side of bullets and unresolved feelings, this one will absolutely do the job. A woman on the run, the man who once broke her heart, and a murder she accidentally witnessed? That’s a solid setup, and this book leans into it hard.

Is it deep? Not really. Is it wildly original? Also no. But it is fast, entertaining, and exactly what you want when you’re in the mood for danger-flavored romance. The pacing keeps things moving, the suspense gives the love story some stakes, and Jack gets just enough broody hero energy to make it work.

I wouldn’t call it life-changing, but it was definitely bingeable. If you’re craving a quick hit of second-chance romance mixed with action and a dash of “oh no we might die,” this one will absolutely hit the spot.

Second Chance Romance.
A woman on the run from witnessing a crime, in a country not her own bumps (almost literally) into an ex-lover. Luckily her disguise is good and though suspicious he accepts her denial of knowing him but the following day, terrified by criminals looking for her, he is the only one she can think of to turn to for help. And so begins a journey to right an injustice, stay alive and perhaps rekindle a love that has never truly died.

Witness Protector by Jude Bayton is a tense, emotional ride from start to finish. Mia Jones has seen too much, and the way her past with Jack Brannon collides with her present danger had me turning pages furiously. The road trip setup works perfectly here. Every stop, every diner, every dark highway feels like a potential trap. But what surprised me most was the heart. Bayton balances the romantic suspense beats with genuine emotional wounds. Mia and Jack have history that hurts, and watching them navigate trust again while running for their lives is gripping. A solid Harlequin entry.

This is a well-crafted romantic suspense that blends danger, second-chance romance, and emotional healing. Written with a steady hand, the story delivers a familiar but engaging setup that will appeal to fans of protective-hero narratives.

Mia (Emilia) Jones and Jack Brannon share a poignant history—a brief but intense summer romance in England that left a lasting imprint on them both. Their unexpected reunion a decade later in a small Arkansas town immediately adds emotional weight, especially as Mia is living under an assumed identity. When her past catches up with her and she’s forced to reveal the truth, the story shifts into high-stakes suspense as Jack steps in to protect her.

The danger surrounding Mia is compelling, with the human-trafficking storyline adding urgency and gravity. Jack’s role as a National Park Ranger suits the protective dynamic well, and his lingering grief over his brother’s death gives his character emotional depth and realism. The romance unfolds more quietly, grounded in shared history and trust rather than instant passion.

With steady pacing, solid suspense, and a satisfying resolution, this book offers an enjoyable, comfortingly familiar read for romantic suspense fans who appreciate second chances, protective heroes, and a hopeful ending.

A solid romance with some action suspense thrown in. Mia and Jack had a young romance when he was visiting her home country of England. The romance fizzled and they both moved on, but not so happily and with unresolved feelings. Ten years later as Jack is starting his newest Ranger post in Arkansas, he runs into the girl who was always in his mind, but is it really her? She is on the run from a decision she made and now it is up to her past love to help her. While saving her life, can she keep from giving her heart to him again? A quick read that hit the spot. Thank you to Harlequin and Netgalley for the advanced copy.
