Fun but less expansive - at least so far - than similar series so will see if it can last the distance as I tend to like continual universe and character expansion in long series since same setting, same characters generally gets stale soon.

While taking place in an alternate St Petersburg (modern - cars, phones, some diversity as an Indian taxi driver comic relief appears among others) but also aristocratic tsarist and with magic though less in your face, the book is written in English and not translated and the attitude is also less Russian gung ho than in similar series.

Another distinction is that each volume so far is structured partially like a mystery - in the first volume, the narrator, an experienced master artificer from the 1600-1700's is re-born in a 22 year old apprentice artificer and bon vivant aristocrat who had more ambition than talent and got too ambitious - missing for two years, his grandfather and only relative bankrupted himself in trying find him and entered into a disastrous contract which actually is even worse than it seems as someone important seems set on acquiring his estate and especially lab.

So when Alexander (now mixing the unnamed powerful artificer from the past and the young man's surviving memories) returns, he has to figure out quickly how to save his estate, cheer up his grandfather and start building a new life and redevelop his magic and artificer skills and the first volume is about the mystery of who wants so much that lab as he soon finds out death magic (strictly forbidden) is involved. Not to speak of a few duels and other unpleasantness. Luckily Alexander still has some friends and protectors and so it goes until an excellent ending point solving the storyline here and starting the new mystery storyline of the second book.

Lots of fun, a nicer and less dark (still some body count and lots of - understated but still - magic) tone, cool characters - love the narration too (while I saw the book around, only when I discovered the narrator is same from another favorite series, I first listened a little and then got involved into it) so will start listening to this soon.

Excelent slow build

While this does bear some resemblance to some Eastern European works, it lacks the gloomy cynicism and heavy-handed apparent cheuvanism. I often lose interest because of those two factors. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it's lack of them. While people and society aren't depicted as perfect, it doesn't feel like a highly functional post-apocolyptic society.

It is slow burn, so I can't comment on things like romance or overall trajectory. I can say the book feels complete with few, if any, unresolved plot points.

There isn't a lot of depth or detail of enchanting or magic, but there was certainly enough to enjoy it. I'm eager to continue the series.

As a side note, the overall tech level feels weird. At times seeming highly modern and others, seeming medieval. With that side, it wasn't to the point of distraction.

Despite the fact that the author seemed to forget to preface the book with a prologue explaining the protagonist's origin, I was a happy camper. The prose was accessible, the grammar of high quality and the pacing just right. The magic system was interesting. I particularly liked how opposing powers had to be balanced for the best progression... life/death, water/fire.

The central premise is very similar to a couple of other stories I've read, so no extra marks there; or for the vanilla world-building. I also feel that the MC's absolute confidence undermined the scale of his challenge as well as any feeling of risk.

The main factors holding my attention were the old "hidden powers" trope and an enormous dash of competence porn. Everyone underestimates the MC but despite this advantage, he still plans and prepares as if every fight might be his last.

Book one

I laughed out loud a couple of times while reading this book.
It's a simple read, not anything more than just good clean entertainment.
I'm looking forward to more and even though I didn't receive an ARC of this one for some unknown reason, I still plan to let the publisher know about the few mistakes I found. You can see them listed on Goodreads as well.

8/10 Enjoyable way to spend a day.

A compelling read. Excellent.

This one was hard to put down. It has some minor flaws but the fact that I really WANTED to keep reading it drowns them out. And I am definitely snapping up book 2 (expected in January 2026).

The main character is a bit too good at almost everything, which is kind of off-putting, but I still wanted to know what happened next and how he got out of whatever predicament he was in.

I would have liked more explanation on exactly how he got into the body he is suddenly in; maybe via a prelude? I thought to myself that it would come out as the story progresses, and I don't like world building dumps, so I was fine with that, and you do learn more and more, but it takes almost the entire book to get a picture of what lead to how he arrived in this timeline or universe or whatever this is. What was he doing before he "died". Was the death deliberate? An accident? How old is he, really? Why is there a 2 year gap from when Alexander disappeared to now? Why is there any gap at all?

I should say, though, that the merging of the MC and the body's previous owner's memories was explained well. I'm surprised no one really questions him, though. Just because you have the previous guy's complete memories doesn't mean you know how he talked, acted, moved. Yes, there are times when the new Alexander surprises people, but there is not any suspicion. They basically blink, shake their head, and move on.

I would have liked more of an explanation or perhaps narration of the magic. Like when he is artificing a bit more on how he sees this and moves that and pushes that while doing the other thing. There is some, don't get me wrong, but it seems relatively quickly described when at the same time we know he was doing it for 18 hours and is now exhausted. I would have liked to get more of a feel for the strain involved.

The rest of the world building is awesome! It's St.Petersburg, in a kind of a steampunk way, but with Ether (electricity?) fuelling all the latest gadgets, car, "internet" etc. They have phones too. But many people have magic too, of one kind or another. It's pretty cool. To me it felt a bit like Pam Uphoff's series, which is also a Russia-based, upper-crust, steampunk, magic world.

I do recommend this author. I have added him to my list of Excellent authors (and yes, I actually have a real list like this).

Well above expectations

When one reads enough from this genre, one comes to expect a certain level of quality. Unfortunately, that tends to leave much to be desired. Combine that with Russian writers, where language and cultural barriers can exacerbate the issue, expectations can be lower still. Fortunately, none of that applies to this book.

The MC is reincarnated into the body of a prankster Count heir after living a full life filled with experiences that make him OP in reasonable ways. The MC had significant combat experience in his previous iteration and that's where a good deal of his OP-ness comes from.

In this pseudo-isekai, the host body wasn't just a nobody or a useless noble. He left the MC not only with useful memories, but useful allies. If one were less than generous they might say these connections are contrived, but it serves to make the world seem more lived in, and I'm happy that this isn't just another cookie-cutter where the MC, who is 'super-special-magic-awesome', is plonked into a useless body with no resources. Don't get me wrong, the MC really is super-special-magic-awesome, but most of his OP-ness comes directly from his past life experience in connection with his host-life connections. Experience and shrewd-ness are his real superpowers.

The weakest parts of the book are actually when he flexes his 'super-special-magic-awesome' in a somewhat gratuitous manner, but those parts are relatively short and minor.

The characters were great. Even minor characters were brought to life, if only briefly. I caught myself laughing out loud on multiple occasions from banter and character interactions. There isn't much world building, but what little there is is magnificent. The MC feels the awe of the beauty around him and even this self-proclaimed misanthrope felt compelled by the imagery. I live amidst incredible beauty and I still felt myself longing to experience the MC's home. At least, you know, theoretically. 'Cause Russia.

Well done all around by this author. I look forward to reading more of his works.

Meh, only so so

So this is one of those books that that you finish and you're like meh. Sure you'll read the next one if it's available and on Kindle unlimited which it is available but they want full price and it's not worth it.

So the story starts with almost no back on information and the only real history you ever get are these vague references. The protagonist is reincarnated in a dead body of medium nobility. We don't really know anything about him We don't really know anything about where this new body has been since they went missing two years ago. There's a lot of holes that are just kind of skimmed over.

The magic system is not particularly well done or explained.

Weak world building that's focused on one city and I want to say Russia?

All in all not something I'd recommend especially since future books are not on KU.

Very good start. Very nuanced with a slow burn.

I enjoyed this book. It had a slow burn developing the main character but the plot was solid and the author built the world slowly and effectively. There's quite a bit of nuance which I enjoy because today most books over explain everything with exposition. The power structure of the gifted people need to be a little more defined, but the story didn't need it to be enjoyed. I'm actually looking forward to the next book, it was a good solid read! I think if I had to critique it at all it might have been a little slow and dry, but again the main character had full agency throughout and dialogue and interaction with the supporting cast felt natural and fun. A good read.

Delightfully delicious

I'm just finishing reading the 3rd book and wishing to share with someone how great these books are, and, voila, I remembered reviews!
The best of everything. Idyllic world, with real people and real problems and plausible solutions, using magic, of course.
I really needed this series after the endless line of game lit I've been reading, where even the authors are beginning to struggle with the might makes right morality and the relevance of NPC's.
And to find this concern with the regular guy and the accompanying responsibility and respect for agency brings me back to the very best of Heinlein's work.
Too bad the author has such a block on female characters, either harridans or angels, or just leave them as shadows.
Enjoy!

You won’t want to put this book down…

I wasn’t sure what to expect and the blurb didn’t overly excite me. If not for the reviews, I’d have probably passed the book by. Thank goodness for reviews! This story is absolutely fascinatingly interesting. One of the most creative plots that I’ve read recently. The writing is top-notch. The story grabs you pretty quickly and doesn’t let go. There’s a subtle cliff hanger, but the book can stand alone. Such writing skill elevates Mr Cass to a level well beyond the 5-stars rating. Highly recommend!

Well written and a fun read. First one free for Kindle and paid for the next so obviously recommend the book. New take on role play genre. I will describe the writing as bad-ass humor but I must have missed the antecedents of the series because I can only infer the past story from the remarks in the book. Does not matter because the story is easily understood and everything flows well. Not a particularly long book so will see if the present book justifies the price. Once bitten twice shy.

A fun read, but with some issues.

1) Person was dead, and is now alive again... so you'd think there'd be some thoughts/discussions/introspection about how that occurred or anything like that?

2) Magic system is pretty vague and not much discussion goes into it

3) First book is on Kindle Unlimited, but of course all subsequent books are $8. Kind of annoying, as I enjoyed the book enough to keep reading with KU, but sure as heck aren't going to spend that kind of money on this quality of work.

Decent read.

1 negative I would say would be that Alex was only gone for 2 years and they kept going on and on about how dilapidated the estate was. Ok i can see fauna growth unchecked but they talked about roofing/tiles/ everything. I'm like no way in 2 years no upkeep would destroy everything. This aspect was kind of dumb.

Decent story, alittle to much time wasted on meals. Being that he had a history, other than people wanting to duel him, it would have been nice if a couple past flings/romances appeared since he was absent 2 years.

Hmm...

It was good, 3 stars baseline. Lots of fun bits, made up for the scant world building. Am keeping my opinion at 4 because 3 is a punishment these days, but this felt like it could use at least another pass through. Maybe expound a bit more on how the society worked or how the magic system interacted with the world. It was an excellent read, very concise one thing led to the next but it was all very one dimensional / surface layer.

Russian slice of life isekai

Another Russian parallel world isekai- sadly seemingly without the usual rifts or portals. The story starts very abrupt without any explanation about the MC's past or how he ended in this body. The plot progresses very slowly, putting more emphasis on ambience than action, but is nice enough.

While it can't compare with similar books from Oleg Sapphire and Alex Toxic, for example, due to lacking action, intrigue and humour, i found the story quite good.

A good but slightly confusing read

I call it confusing mostly because I don't understand the Russian background. Otherwise, I found it to be an enjoyable read. The biggest negative I saw with it is that the following book isn't part of Kindle Unlimited. It feels too much like a bait and switch scheme; getting me hooked with the first book and then expecting me to shell out extra for the second.

Not bad, not what I expected.

The first book was slower than I expected. The pacing was fine in it, but I expected more focus on artificing and magic. It builds on its self slowly as he handles things one step at a time, dealing with mostly mundane tasks. The book as a whole feels like chapter one in a larger story, but the story wraps up nicely with the story arc of the book neatly concluded.
It held my interest but wasn’t quite what I expected. Overall: 4 stars, good.

I really enjoyed this one!

Great read! The characters are really engaging and the story has the perfect blend of revelation and secrets yet to be discovered. Plus, I absolutely LOVE the trope of a capable and honorable soul suddenly filling the body of a fool and turning everyone's life around. It's not always done well, but this one is done amazingly! Bravo, author!

Really good story

This was a really good story. The characters were interesting, there was action, magic, intrigue. There are surprises sprinkled throughout as the story progressed. I enjoyed this book and recommend it. It will be interesting to see how the story continues in the next iterations of this series.

Love's the book

I loved the book. The translation was a little shaky in the beginning but got better as the book progressed. I have a star because I detest when authors put the first book on Kindle unlimited then make all the subsequent books not on Kindle unlimited and price the books absurdly. I won't read this author again.

I liked it

This progression fantasy assumes you’ve read this type of book before and understand what the genre is about, which means there is very little time spent on backstory and a lot of time dedicated to the current progression.

Awesome Book

Tons of action without tons of blood and gore. Enough action and personal drama to carry you from the first page to the last. No outstanding swearing to break the story and no F bombs. A book worth recommending to your friends (and their teenagers).

OP MC

For those who enjoy a story about reincarnation and the main character, although not exceedingly powerful at the start, is unflappable, this is the book for you. Looking forward to reading the next in the series.

Great book, but

The first book is on Kindle unlimited. It was great, the I went to Kindle books and low and behold, their are 9 books in the series, and they want 9 bucks for each of the rest. What a sleaze bag thing to do.

Excellent

First book in a promising series. Kindle unlimited for the first book, sadly the rest of the series are not. I won't be buying them, old man too cheap for his reading vices. If the rest becomes available in Kindle unlimited I'll read them then.
