I couldn’t finish it. It was way denser than I feel a self help book should be, you would want something like that to be more accessible especially if you are feeling vulnerable, right? The writing style reminds me of a student in college who is trying to sound as academic as possible for an assignment to try and show off to the teacher. Either that, or it’s written with AI, and both are regretful options.
But the last straw for me was coming upon a story of a man who pitched an idea to the CEO of his company and was shot down. He asked to meet with the CEO again, and the CRO’s people were like, no he doesn’t do that. Then the worker heard the CEO was flying on a plane soon and asked for the flight info. Instead of calling the police or being suspicious, the CEO’s secretary gives this man the gate number, the airport, the flight info. The man books a flight for the same airline and miracle upon miracles ends up sitting next to the CEO. He introduces himself to the CEO and bonds with him, gives him the idea again, and the CEO was totally okay with all of that! I call BS, that’s not how real life works! He would have been terrified! That’s when I knew, even the stories presented with each lesson were more than likely fake too, what about this writer can I trust?
And ever since I read that story and felt that way, I’ve gone like a month without returning it, the longest lull in reading I’ve had in like 2 years!
So I gotta put it down or risk losing my momentum even further.

This is more like 2.5 stars for me. IMO, the first chapter was the best. It really resonated with me and has made me think a lot about my own self esteem. The rest of the book, though, was hard to get through. It was definitely edited or something by AI. The narrative was repetitive, a little over the top, and very dense. I skimmed most of the book, if I’m being honest.
As I figured, this book was another self help one. It was good but some beginnings of chapters felt like they were written or fixed by ChatGPT due to the structure of the sentence. One thing I liked about this book was that it has some good quotes that made me think but over that, it’s just a self help book like the rest, we stories of people who overcame difficulties. Almost DNF, last pages were really hard for me to read. 3/5.
Book Review: Rediscover Your Wisdom: Drawing on Answers from Your Past to Achieve Self-Improvement, Growth, and Success by Rabbi Joel Stein (A Woman’s Perspective on Reclaiming Inner Wisdom for Transformation)
Rabbi Joel Stein’s Rediscover Your Wisdom offers a unique blend of spiritual guidance and practical self-help, framed through Jewish teachings yet universally applicable. From a woman’s perspective, the book stands out for its emphasis on introspection, resilience, and the reclamation of personal narrative—themes that resonate deeply with women navigating societal expectations, systemic barriers, and the quest for authentic self-actualization.
Key Themes and Strengths Wisdom as an Inner Compass: Stein reframes wisdom not as external knowledge but as an internal resource cultivated through reflection on past experiences. For women—often socialized to doubt their instincts—this approach validates intuition and lived experience as legitimate sources of power.
Narrative Reclamation: The book’s focus on revisiting one’s personal history aligns with feminist storytelling traditions. Exercises that encourage reframing past struggles as sources of strength (e.g., overcoming adversity, silencing, or marginalization) provide tools to rewrite disempowering narratives.
Resilience Through Ritual: Stein incorporates Jewish contemplative practices (e.g., cheshbon hanefesh, or soul-accounting) that women can adapt to create their own rituals for growth. The emphasis on cyclical self-assessment mirrors natural and lunar cycles many women already honor.
Practical Integration: Unlike abstract spiritual guides, Stein bridges theory with actionable steps. His techniques for “amplifying resilience” (e.g., journaling prompts, gratitude mapping) are particularly useful for women balancing multiple roles, offering manageable ways to integrate self-work into daily life.
Ethical Growth: The book’s focus on tikkun middot (character refinement) speaks to women’s often-overlooked need for self-development beyond caregiving roles. Stein’s balance of ambition and humility counters cultural stereotypes that paint women’s success as either “too much” or “not enough.”
Critique While Stein’s framework is inclusive, its roots in Orthodox Jewish tradition may require additional contextualization for readers unfamiliar with Jewish spirituality. The book could also benefit from explicitly addressing gendered barriers (e.g., imposter syndrome, workplace inequity) to align more directly with women’s lived challenges.
Conclusion Rediscover Your Wisdom is a compelling invitation to mine the past for transformative insight. For women seeking to harness their history as a catalyst for growth—without sacrificing spiritual depth or practicality—Stein’s work is both a mirror and a map. It shines brightest when read as a companion to feminist self-help classics, offering a structured yet flexible path to reclaiming agency.
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5) A thoughtful synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern self-help—think The Gifts of Imperfection meets Pirkei Avot, with a journal in hand.

Joel provides guidance on how to deal with everyday challenges by looking at the wisdom you have already gained.
This self-help book is reassuring and thought provoking at the same time. Joel urges the reader to “rediscover their wisdom” so that they can navigate everyday problems using solutions that they have used in the past but have forgotten over time. I enjoyed reading Rediscover Your Wisdom and loved the author’s fatherly, non judgemental and warm writing style. His altruism shines out from the pages. He has a wonderful understanding of human nature and people. I loved the psychology involved as he explained how our emotions and minds work…
I suggested that emotions, even negative ones, can be indicators of subconscious thoughts that might not immediately surface. These thoughts, lurking in the depths of the mind, can have a lasting impact on our mood without conscious awareness.
…Joel is very articulate, with a huge vocabulary that gives the reader the full picture. This is an intelligent adult read which highlights just how easy it is for everyone to overlook the wisdom they already hold…
Every experience, triumph, and setback we encounter contributes to a store of wisdom that can guide us through the challenges of today. Introspection, the art of delving into the recesses of our own minds, becomes a crucial tool in this journey. By reflecting on our past, we unearth the lessons buried within the folds of time.
…Joel is a master at people skills and explains how changing your perspective on issues can reduce conflict so that people can get along together again. Although Joel is a Rabbi, this book has nothing to do with Judaism and is a book for everyone. I found Rediscover Your Wisdom both interesting and refreshing, making for a GOOD 4 star read.
Rediscover Your Wisdom by Rabbi Joel Stein really surprised me—in the best way. It’s not your typical self-help book filled with generic advice. Instead, it gently guides you to look inward and remember that you’ve already survived hard things before—and that the strength, answers, and clarity you need are already inside of you.
What really resonated with me is how Rabbi Stein frames our past experiences as tools for growth, not baggage. It’s empowering to think that I can be my own best guide, especially during times when I feel overwhelmed or stuck. This book doesn’t promise instant transformation, but it gives you realistic, introspective strategies to move forward—ones that actually feel doable, even with a busy life and emotional ups and downs.
It’s filled with stories that feel personal and grounded, not preachy. He talks a lot about using your own lived wisdom to get through the present, and that just hit home for me. Especially now, during a season of big changes and healing, it was the reminder I needed: I’ve done hard things before. I can do them again.
If you're going through a shift in your life—grieving, growing, or just trying to rediscover who you are—this book feels like a warm, wise friend reminding you that you're not broken. You're just unfolding.
This book feels extremely powerful to me. I am currently in a process of redefining my past, making peace with it, and using it as a foundation to build my present with greater awareness. Empowering myself, speaking kindly to myself, and shaping my future are part of this journey, and this book reflects all of that in a very clear and meaningful way.
Many times, going back to the past, remembering it, and becoming aware of it can be very challenging. There are wounds, experiences, and moments we would rather forget and never revisit. However, it is necessary to face them in order to become more conscious and avoid repeating the same mistakes, choosing instead to learn from them.
In my opinion, we often fail to learn from our mistakes because we live fast-paced lives that do not allow us to pause, reflect, and recognize what we can improve. This book offers very practical guidance that helps the reader overcome the fear of confronting themselves and their lived experiences.
For all these reasons, I consider this a life-changing book. It is deep, transformative, and truly powerful.
I found this book to be a motivating read offering a completely different perspective. The author boldly challenges us to eliminate all the external stimuli inherent in this age of massive information overload and return to ourselves, to our roots and our past experiences. I believe this book generates a courageous exploration of our personal history, pushing the reader to truly know themselves, identify crucial life moments, and understand inherited patterns, all leading toward the acceptance of who we truly are.
What I enjoyed most about this reading is the constant encouragement to measure personal success by our own standards, along with the wealth of practical tools provided for anyone looking to build a stronger, more successful state of self-awareness.
this was... okay. there were lines worth reading and remembering, but as a whole... i didn't walk away with that sense of self-empowerment that self-help books generally leave you with. you know that feeling where you're inspired to do something/anything to get on that journey of healing? yeah, i didn't get that from this.
anyways, i got through this book by letting Siri read it to me. i might not have been the target audience for this, but still no regrets. there might be others who'd appreciate the insights in this book and take away more than i did.
thank you to Goodreads, publisher, and Rabbi Joel Stein for sending me a Kindle copy of this book after winning a Giveaway. i leave this review of my own volition. all thoughts and opinions are my own.
“Why do you doubt everything in life, but you are certain that you are worthless?”
There are so many gems of wisdom in this book. I love the style of lessons written in the form of stories of real people and situations where they find their answers within their past experiences. I had trouble choosing which quotes of all of the ones I saved to use for this review!
"By embracing the lessons of our past, we embark on a continuous journey of growth and adaptation, harnessing the richness of our experiences to navigate the complexities of the present and shape a more enlightened future."
"May you find the courage to embrace the unwritten chapters with curiosity and the conviction to craft a narrative that reflects the beauty and strength inherent in your unique story."
Rediscover Your Wisdom a truly uplifting book shows you how to take advantage from past experiences for amazing self-improvement. Rabbi Joel Stein elucidates how thoughtful reflection on past hurdles and victories fosters wiser choices and personal evolution. I really enjoyed it because at some point he started to blend handy tips with some really profound thoughts. The book actually inspires greater self-awareness, along with both patience and understanding of your behavioral patterns in life. Though, definitely, some sections are quite reflective, requiring focus, it totally fuels your drive for personal progress. This book actually sparked deeper contemplation of my decisions and how I can better myself going forward day by day.
This is a book about gaining wisdom that is written by someone who has observed wisdom in others- a person, an individual, a father, a teacher, a mother, an other individual… A third of the way into the book some names are occassionally added to describe these people. The author feels he provided guidance for others to find wisdom, while giving no indication he himself was on a spiritual journey to discover his own wisdom.
Sometimes we blame outside influences to blame for all the wrongs in our and the truth might be that we need to dot down, focus, and turn our attention inwards. What can I learn? Who can I be? Is it too late to start. A good quick read guide to beginning to honestly face what we impose on ourselves.
For a long time now, I have been helping kids cope with struggles in their life. This book taught me that I wasn't doing much to help myself. It showed me some unique techniques that I can use to help me reaolve conflict in myself that I have had for so many years. It is a really great read for anyone who would like reflection and resolution in their day to day lives.
Good examples through stories of what people have experienced. Simple read. Practical, easy suggestions to help oneself to do better. Personally, I liked it.
