Where Eagles Soar

Rate this book
In 1947 Lily Sanders moved with her family to a homestead at the edge of an Athabaskan village in the Alaskan Territory. It was an ideal location for her father, a mountain man and hunting guide. It also provided a place where the world could not see his brutality.

Seeking her father’s love and approval, Lily traipses the mountain trails at his side, learning to bring down big game and to work as a hunting guide. She runs her own trap-lines, faces down wolves and mushes her dog team in local races.

A heartless act by her father, leaves Lily brokenhearted and strips away any thread of hope that one day he might love her. She vows to never forgive him and turns to the powerful bond of love she shares with her sweet-spirited mother and her many sisters. Together they share the adventure, beauty and heartache of their wilderness life.

Even a mother’s love is not great enough to overcome a deeply rooted bitterness like Lily’s. Only the love of God can set her free.

Where Eagles Soar is a true-to-life retelling of Lily Sanders' survival growing up in the rugged Alaskan wilderness. Bonnie Leon compassionately steps into Lily's shoes and through her voice shares the devastating lows as well as extraordinary highs of Lily's life. Lily faces trials that never seem to end, unimaginable physical and emotional pain, and a hope in the Great White God planted in her heart by her mother.

Though I've read many biographies, I've never read one written in the voice of the subject as this one is. I often felt as though Lily were speaking directly to me in her lilted, matter-of-fact Athabaskan tone, sharing intimate details of her struggles as one would share with a good friend. Her story touched me as her fight for her earthly father's approval transformed into her desire for her Heavenly Father's grace-filled love. Although there are a few repetitive parts, this doesn’t degrade the story, but makes it seem again, more like a personal narrative. I highly recommend this book.

What a story! Thanks so much, Bonnie Leon for sharing Lily's story with the world. Just when you think your past was the worst and that you couldn't forgive... God is there to guide you, love you and forgive you. The hardest part for us all is to forgive others. God will help you as he helped her. You must read Lily's story... It will change your life.

Bonnie Leon is a friend of many years and I have read most of her books. This one is a jewel. The main character (and supporting cast) is a real person who survived and thrived through an unspeakable childhood. God held her in His hand long before she knew Him. This story is a testament to what God can do in a life to bring forgiveness and love when it seems impossible. Bonnie's own strong faith comes shining through in every word. I highly recommend this short but powerful book.

This is a must read book if you believe your life is hard...

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read this wonderfully awesome book.

I cried through much of it, I cheered some too and rooted for her all the way through.

This book helped me to understand that tho things are bad at times in my life...

That I should be grateful because it wasn't as bad as Lily's life, she made it through.. She believed, and I can too!

This will be my go to book when I need reminding that things could be a lot worse then they are... When I need reminding that I'm truly grateful for all I have and my faith.

Thank you Lily for having the courage to share your life's story with the world!

Thank you Bonnie Leon for caring...Thank you for writing it... Thank you for sharing it... And mostly, thank you for touching my heart.

This is one of Author Bonnie Leon's best books! An extremely inspiring true story of the life a woman (Lily)growing up in Alaska under the most brutal conditions. Her father was a cruel and heartless man, but her mother never gave up her faith in the Great White God. A heart-rending and heart-warming story of a woman who has gone through more heart ache and pain than most of us can imagine, but she came out at the top when she discovered the love of God, the Great White God who her mother never gave up hope in. This was a page-turner book that I read in one day! I highly recommend it!

Both my husband and I read this book. It is an excellent a book but a difficult read. Not because of Bonnie's writing , she is as excellent as usual, but the topic is hard. It is amazing how God brought Lily through so much. I recommend it to any adult. It is not a book for a young teen.

This is Bonnie Leon’s most riveting book. Many of the scenes put a knot in my stomach as they triggered some of my own memories. I’m thankful Lily had the courage to tell her story and I pray that many others will receive strength and courage to face their own struggles.

A memoir not to be missed. Though it's a tough read, it's a beautiful story of redemption and God's healing love. Glad to have an early opportunity to read this one. Great job by the author on her first memoir. She really rose to the challenge to tell this true story.

Awesome book

I was unsure I would like this book. I was not anxious to read about abuse. But, after three chapters, I was hooked. A great writer and a great story. Enjoy!

What an amazing book! Bonnie Leon has captured the life story of Lily, writing in a voice that sounds so unique, as if Lily is personally telling her story.
It is a life of unimaginable hardship and trauma in the Alaskan mountains. But it is also a life of family, of living close to nature, and of a spark of hope.
What a blessing to be able to read what Lily herself wanted to share. It is a treasure!
