Sophia: former black operative, current enemy of the state.
Moments before a catastrophic hurricane hits New York City, a terrorist attack vaporizes a museum and a large chunk of the Upper West Side. Almost caught in the explosion, Sophia gives chase to a suspicious figure running from the blast zone.
Amid the chaos, Sophia recovers a rare meteorite from a black operative and is quickly ensnared in a hunt between clashing factions of a labyrinthine covert government known as the Fifth Column.
The meteorite contains traces of the ancient Phoenix virus. The effects of the virus are unknown to Sophia, but she soon discovers it is more powerful than she dared imagine - and that the Fifth Column will stop at nothing to get it.
Unarmed and outnumbered, Sophia and her allies hurtle towards a confrontation that will determine not only their fate but that of all humanity.
Nathan M. Farrugia is the USA Today bestselling author of the Helix and Fifth Column sci-fi thriller series.
Nathan is known for placing himself in dangerous situations, including climbing rooftops in Russia and being hunted by special forces trackers in the United States. He studies Systema, a little-known martial art and former secret of the Russian special forces.
Beyond his army training, Nathan has trained under USMC, SEAL team, Spetsnaz and Defence Intelligence instructors, and the wilderness and tracking skills of the Chiricahua Apache scouts and Australian Aboriginals.
I have to say that this is the best one yet. It combines the ongoing action of the first two books but includes a generous helping of character development. While I enjoyed the action of the first two, I would have become increasingly bored with the series. I have enjoyed Matthew Reilly's Scarecrow series but got bored as I love character development. I think the author has taken this series in a promising direction.
Plot summary
Sophia and the rest of the loosely organized crew of modified soldiers are facing the biggest threat yet. Virus are regularly entering earth's atmosphere via meteors. Certain elements within the government and shadow government, seek to obtain strains of three rare viruses as the three together have powerful effects on a human subject. Sophia finds herself depressed and separated from her friends given the events of the previous book. The new threat requires that she get back into the game and reconnect with her old friends to fight the biggest danger yet.
My Take
It is not easy to describe the idea behind these books. In essence, various forms of genetic modification can be used to cause the recipient to have specific enhanced abilities. The changes can be caused by science or by other means, such as the viruses in this novel. This description is quite poor as the "powers" are rather complex and require some rereading before tackling the next novel. Honestly, the best source for this is the author's website where he gives an excellent description of each character and their enhanced abilities. Honestly, if you want to read the series, I would go to the site. http://nathanmfarrugia.com/characters/
These novels really are Techno Thrillers. Some elements of the authors technology and science/pseudoscience are quite fascinating while other elements border on the absurd. Regardless, the mix of science, technology, guns and explosions is a recipe for adrenaline fueled awesomeness. While it is usually awesome, the complexity of the Techno aspect can, at times, serve to drag the story down. For some readers, the complexity will be a plus while for others, it will detract from their experience.
The author tries to continually one up himself when it come to dangerous genetic modification. This has been a theme in the first three book. This form of the genetic modification in this book is already slightly absurd. If this series intends on continuing, the author will likely have to shift focuses.
The third book in this series is the best of the first three. The author continues to grow in his skill and it is evident in the quality of this one over the first. Don't judge this book by its cover. The picture on the cover really makes this look like a self published effort but it is misleading. This is a great book by a great author and I intend on continuing to read whatever he puts out.
Can this Book Stand Alone
No. You have to read the first two. The series has many complexities and if you jump in with this one, you will be quite confused.
Content Advisories
It is difficult to find commentary on the sex/violence/language content of book if you are interested. I make an effort to give you the information so you can make an informed decision before reading. *Disclaimer* I do not take note or count the occurrences of adult language as I read. I am simply giving approximations. When reviewing language, mild obscenities are words like, shit, hell or damn. Religious exclamations are words such as Christ or Jesus when used as profanity.
Scale 1 - Lowest 5 - Highest
Sex - 1.5
No graphic sex. Some "relationship" elements but it is quite minor.
Language - 1
76 Mild Obscenities 78 f-words and 4 religious exclamations
Violence - 3.5
There is fighting and killing throughout most of the book. That said, it tends not be graphic and nothing stood out to me so far a violence is concerned.
I have this bad habit of rating individual books while forgetting their overarching places in the overall story arc of the series. NO MORE, I SAY.
This series is amazing. I love it.
Sophia (along with another female character, not relevant to this current post) has managed to restore my faith in female characters. She's not a pushover. She doesn't need a romantic attachment to make her any more complete. She simply kicks some serious ass, all the time, and still manages to keep the combat archetype without being a total sociopath emotionless operative. She's still a person, dammit. Sophia, thank you for not being a whiny whimpery lazy heroine who pretends to be ~*important and brave and independent and fierce*~ while really just defaulting to occasionally throwing out witty one-liners or kicking butt after getting herself into a situation because of a romantic attachment.
This is not this kind of story.
For that, I thank you, Nathan M. Farrugia, for giving the world a real heroine who you can look to in literature who is there simply because she is a fucking badass.
The third and much looked forward to book in a great series by Nathan M Farrugia follows the adventure of Sophia, genetically enhanced operative gone rogue and her friends trying to bring down The Fifth Column, the group who run the worlds governments therefore controlling the masses. Reading this third instalment was like riding a familiar roller-coaster for the third time and finding that the sharp bends and loops have been twisted around since your last ride. The story is fast paced yet clear with good descriptive and the characters are individuals we soon grow to love they are so well written, even the "bad guy" Denton, I found myself not wanting him to be killed off because I would miss the psychopath. Sophia and her team are re-united once again, this time in New York with a hurricane fast approaching and a meteor fragment containing a virus they must destroy or at least keep out of the hands of the fifth column, not an easy thing as they are being tracked step by step and hunted by operatives with their own unique gene enhancements. I particularly enjoy the relationships between the characters in the fifth column series of books and they are developing really well three stories down the line,my favourite being Jay whose light hearted ways in the bleakest of moments always make me laugh. It was also good to spot the reference to another good writer Matthew Reilly, who would have thought Denton would read Reilly? well he enjoys baking cup-cakes so why not? I look forward to more from Mr Farrugia in the future.
Like David vs Goliath vs Godzilla vs Mother Nature’s enhanced wrath, with high tech weapons, genetic enhancements and powerful psychopaths, The Phoenix Variant by Nathan M. Farrugia continues to pit a small, ragtag group of rebels against the powers of evil on a scale that is frighteningly too possible to cast off as pure fantasy or science fiction. This is a battle between those with a conscience and those incapable of even faking one. In a world that doesn’t even know it needs saving, Sophia is still leading the charge, reluctantly accepting help from her own group of Amazonian type friends and allies, as well as some unlikely sources. Denton has surpassed his own deviltry this time, as he searches for a meteor fragment that contains part of the key to total world domination and invincibility, the ultimate fighting machine. But does he need more than just this rock to add to his collection? Does the real power lie in the blood or DNA of one special person, a person he is determined to capture? There are others out there who are after the prize, could this be a family reunion of sorts?
Faced with enemies of equal or even superior genetic alterations, the action is nonstop, once again as Damian and Jay find themselves tied up in their own drama of life vs death under the streets of New York. Has time run out on Jay’s wit and charm? In a battle to save the world, the action, the shock and awe and the camaraderie of these heroes becomes the things of legends as Nathan M. Farrugia holds his readers hostage for yet another amazing and wild ride.
The characters are in charge, they are fueling this story with their attitudes, dialogue and all-around raw grit as Mr. Farrugia pumps even more personality and life into each one. Once again, I was ready to don my evil-fighting gear and have their backs, (fortunately, they didn’t need my help). Nonstop action, good vs evil, high tech, genetic manipulation, another trip through hell while dodging capture, what else could you want? If Nathan M. Farrugia keeps raising the bar on his writing, he may start sending manuscripts from the moon.

I've been looking forward to this book, the third in the series. As a reader you always wonder if the next book will be as good as the last. We've all read series that gradually fall apart the more books there are but this isn't one of them.
It is hard for this type of book to keep its momentum but so far Mr. Farrugia is hitting the target dead center.
Once again we have Sophia and her crew. Everyone is working a different gig but when things start blowing up, Sophia realizes that Denton is behind a new project that has to do with meteors and what's inside of them. She calls in the team along with Aviary to find out what Denton is up to and how to stop him.
We learn more about Denton in this book and just how maniacal he is and we will meet family that will help us understand where Denton came from and what he is trying to accomplish.
There are new characters and some not so new characters returning for this third story. The action is a bit different but the battle scenes are awesome. It will keep you glued to the book until the end.
We learn more about Sophia's connection to Phoenix but even more comes through from Denton. He needs Sophia but if he gets what he wants she may become a liability.
The enemy is getting harder to kill and the action scenes are just amazing. They're coming from all sides and no one is sure who is fighting for who. This makes for some crazy battle scenes all around New York.
Always a pleasure to watch Damian and Jay work but now we also have Aviary who we met in the last book. She wants to be part of the team and to do it she may end up getting herself killed.
I really like the fact that the author keeps the basic characters we all love but continues to add in old and new ones. You bring back the old to show that perhaps they weren't on the wrong side after all and you bring in the new to be trained thereby expanding the resistance.
At the end once again some achievements are made and Denton may be hobbled somewhat in his plans but never say never. It is very clear that this war is not over by a longshot. Farrugia always leaves you wanting more and that is the hallmark of a great series.
Yep, loved this as much as the other 2 books in the series - it was the same fast paced, titillating read, sometimes you feel your heart is beating hard and then you realise you forgot to breathe! And what gives me the shivers is that even more of the conspiracy theories might be true than we'd like to believe is fiction - we perceive there's a "5th column" as far as money makes the world go round, but to think they might have their own army and resources? Brrrr!
I like that the survival of the good keeps hanging by a thread and the bad seems to be one pace ahead all the time, which makes sense as evil is Master, but in the victory of evil there's always a ray of hope left for the good in the future. I must say also that the good guys seem to be so human and failible, even with the superpowers, they prefer saving each other over winning even against all odds, and isn't that what humanity is about? Not to mention that they always get the luck on their side, saving them in the nick of time in many instances, which they deserve.
Well done, Nathan, and I really enjoyed the bit of romance there at the end, makes you realise that there's always some part of the story left to the imagination...
COULDN’T CATCH MY BREATH Sophia and her band of Project GATE enhanced warriors battle on against the Fifth Column’s efforts to corral the final meteorite born virus which, when combined with the first two AND what Sophia carries in her own DNA, threatens to create a being of unimaginable power. This cannot be allowed to happen. Sophia must avoid capture in New York, the target of a category 5 hurricane, both below and above ground, while she struggles to deny the Fifth Column its goal. To make matters worse, it seems the Fifth Column has become fractured and new players have joined the quest for their own purposes? Outgunned and outnumbered, with enemies on all side, Sophia’s efforts are significantly aided by her newfound friend, Aviary (introduced in Book Two) and her technical skills and efforts to mimic Sophia as a “operative.” Once again, all is not as it seems. You can’t help but love this latest installment.
One must admit... this is a really gripping series so far. This one took a bit to build up, but it was worth it - just to see the Gambit Pileup of four different sets of people. Not to mention that, set in this day and age, this may have a disturbing chance of being reality - which adds to a bit of fear too, making it even more thrilling to see the heroes overcome the odds. Plus, new characters were brought in and admirably built-up, without sacrificing the development and interactions of the existing characters whom we have come to know and love. Overall, a fun, fast-paced, light reader - highly recommended to all fans of thrillers, spy and adventure fiction. Going forward (my personal request, don't mind), please provide Sophia and team a bit more powers, weapons and organizational support to make things interesting.
It was okay. I personally didn't like the 'alien' origin of the viruses. Also Denton's new power to read mind. Some bits felt more 'supernatural' than science fiction. Wasn't really my cup of tea.
Some parts were really cool though. I LOVED Czarina's deprogramming sequence. I couldn't take my eyes off while reading that part. It was SO thrilling! That was by far the best sequence I've read in the entire Fifth Column series. Absolutely loved it. Also, Sophia's fight with Denton at the end was very satisfactory. It's like the whole book built up momentum for that one moment.

In the third installment of the Fifth Column series, Nathan weaves a great tale of suspense with just the right amount of science fiction. His writing style is more solid now and the action never stops. The main characters are more developed and their backgrounds are staring to give the series more life. I would recommend this series for anyone who likes Jeremy Robinson's chess king series. I honestly can't wait to read Nathan's next novel.
As always Farrugia's stories have a lot of awesome action. Sometimes I have to wonder if his characters will ever catch a break, which is part of the reason that I love his books. The never ending action, the peril, and the question of will they or won't they survive.
Be open for some incredible scenes and go in with an open mind and I believe you will enjoy this book. Lots of blood, action, gore, and know that there is some language. Love the fast paced action.
Well, another superfast paced book. I can't believe it all happens in such a short time. Action galore, with liitle bits of information that you must retain to ensure you keep up with the story. I was certainly surprised about the Commander coming into the story. I won't divulge anything cause you just have to read it yourself. But another book is coming I think. It can't be left like it is. It will continue for sure. Thanks Nathan. Keep writing.
The third book in this series is identical to the other two....explosive, non stop action!! An extremely well written techno thriller, with fantastic twists and turns on every page!! The fifth column controls the government's of the world, but only a select group of former operatives are willing to take them on . I enjoyed this book immensely!!! Was unable to put it down. A spectacular read!!!
Better than the second book in the series. I keep falling for these characters, they are becoming friends. I am even seeing real world cross over with some of the human conditioning. Scary. Imagine loosing control of your own body from brainwashing. How about obtaining super powers from meteorites? What if our version of human is really the dumbed down version of how we began? Every chapter seems to have action and potential danger. This story could go in a number of different directions.
I did enjoy this book as much as the other two. Lots of action, lots of suspense, a dash of drama and a tiny twist at the end. I am not sure that the story is fully resolved. Farrugia left a crack at the end just big enough for a Fifth Column 4. I have never been a big fan of stories that leave things a little in the air. Nevertheless, it was a cracking good yarn.

I won't be recording my thoughts (if I choose to) here until after the AA are over.
I thought this was better than the second book in the series, as there is more of a science angle to the storyline and not just the action/adventure stuff. The characters are very well written, and it is great how a few of the side stories are wrapped up nicely. Quite a few twists and turns I never saw coming. Now that I have finished this series, I look forward to future works by the author.
Another great story with familiar characters and a healthy dose of new ones to liven up the mix. Using the fith collum framework the story arcs bringing in interesting twists and turns creating trust issues and yet more intrigue.
I didn't know what a few things were in the book to googled them I hope GCHQ are not looking at my search history as it's full of weapons and ammo!
Fast and nice read, though I must admit that while I like some of the characters, others not so much, I skimmed most of the chapters with Jay and Damien. Some of the plot too, for the world they've built so far, is a bit far fetched, but that's ok.
This episode closed with a resounding BANG and maybe, I hope, a hint of more to come!! The choreographing of the fight sequences is absolutely brilliant. There were times when I almost felt as if I were in the fray myself. I hope this series makes it to TV or movies.
Loved the series from the start. Lots of twists and turns as well as non stop action. The characters were also brilliant and thats what I loved the most. Good ones and bad ones are there but the lines are really blurred sometimes which really makes the series stand out. Can't wait for more.
Another great read from Nathan. The pace of #2 & #3 have slowed some what from #1, but the continuous flow does not detract. More of the characters features are coming through with each new saga leaving you waiting and wanting more when the current story finishes
What a great book to an even better series. Farrugia knows how to captivate his audience and keep is wanting more. I look forward to reading more of his future work!!!!
