This book was published in 1994, so, of course, some of it has been overtaken by events.

That said, it is a well written, well researched survey of the FBI's history and activities up to that time. The chapters on La Cosa Nostra, Waco, and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing are particularly absorbing.

Disappointingly vague. Although there were some parts of the book that shed some light on the inner workings of the FBI, too much of it left me wondering what I had just read. Especially the section on political spies. That left me totally bewildered. The highlight was the open and honest accounts of the Waco standoff. Other than that, it was not worth reading. Hard pass recommended.

It’s been amazing reading this with hindsight, especially after 9/11 and all the technological advances in crime and crime fighting since this was written.
