"Points West" is the fifth book in Melanie Jackson's bestselling Butterscotch Jones Cozy Mystery Series. McIntyre's Gulch has had it's share of misadventure and close calls with the law, but this time disaster looms large. A corrupt Mountie has staggered to Butterscotch's doorstep and then dropped dead. Chuck Goodhead is able to identify the policeman as a traitor who is a purveyor of secrets. Dark and powerful enemies are converging on the town and Chuck and Butterscotch must work quickly to find out why a dying man used his last moments of life to come to them.
Melanie, an award-winning author of more than fifty novels, stories and poems lives with her writer husband in the California Gold Country with their cat (also a writer who has a page on myspace) and their dog (who is hoping to get a page on facebook as soon as she masters typing). Melanie likes gardening but hates the deer who also like her garden, and she volunteers at a local animal shelter.
I don't do book reviews like you keep seeing, as I find that some give too much of the plot away and I personally hate that, as it makes the book not worth reading. I much prefer to take the authors back cover write up as a review as it can either intrigue you enough to read the book of provide you enough information to make you decide that the book is not for you. My review rules are: The more stars, the more I liked it. If there are too many typos or errors the less stars I give If the storyline or plot is poor or contains too many errors, the characters are too weak, the ending lacking something, then the less stars I give. Simple, uncomplicated and to the point without giving anything away. Some of the books I read have been given to me by the author as a pre-release copy and this does not bias my reviews in any way.
Yet another outsider ends up dead near the McIntyre's Gulch
Jackson's mysteries are light and easy all the while introducing a bit of danger. What is nice about this book, is it wraps up loose ends the residents just do not need or want. Butterscotch calls in her Mounty boyfriend because this new death could cause more strangers poking around their noses where it do not belong. Along for the ride is the Mounty's elderly recently widowed Dad. This brings further complications and humor to boot.
I have enjoyed all of the books in this series, however, this one was not so hot. It was almost to the point of ridiculous....Easy, fast read, but I certainly did not like it as much as the previous books. This may be the end of the series for me.
I love these books. I love Butterscotch and Chuck. I read a lot of books. But I've never read one where the characters had a funeral for a hand (in a jewelry box with six pallbearers). Melanie has a strange sense if humor and I hope it never stops!
This episode gets rid of a bad guy, redeems another and lets the bears and wolves have a feast. And that is just a glimpse of the fun this time around! On to book 6!!
This is the 5th book in the series. Butterscotch hears a bump at the door and finds a man there who dies as she opens the door . He turns out to be a Mountie who is one of the bad guys and was looking for Mountie Chuck. Butterscotch gets Chuck up there and they discover the bad Mountie Brian had been shot and poisoned. By back tracking the find what is left of the person who shot him. They get the FBI involved and make a mess of things before they are done. I so enjoy these books.
