The Secret Door

Rate this book
2024. When Army Specialist Brant Morgan returns home to Castile, New York, to lay his mother to rest after her unexpected death, he inherits a mysterious key to an unknown lock. A key that sends him on a search for answers to questions about his mother’s past he didn’t even know existed. He is not alone in his search, however. His childhood friend, Taylor Ross, encourages him to stay the course and discover the long-held secrets his mother hinted about in her last letter to him. But Taylor has a secret, too, one she hasn’t even told her father, the pastor of a small local church. As Taylor and Brant’s relationship deepens, will fear and shame prevent her from standing beside the man she has loved since high school? When the past and present collide, he needs her more than ever as the answers he uncovers threaten to shatter his future.

1777. When Louise Ahrenson finds herself unexpectedly sent back in time to the beautiful Vale of Three Falls in the heart of the Seneca Nation—a place she has always known as Letchworth Park in her own time—she is at a loss to understand the circumstances that brought her there. However, she is immediately and irresistibly drawn to Michel Allende, a French trapper who reluctantly shelters her, a man whose tragic life strangely mirrors an old Seneca legend she learned about as a child. As a new chapter of her life unfolds, she prays that Michel’s love, and the friendship of the native Seneca people who adopt her as their own, can silence the siren call of her past that beckons her back to the future.

A dual timeline story about mothers and sons, and the special bond of love between them…

Absolutely loved this book! So many secrets, and Brant’s recently deceased mother sends him on a treasure hunt with clues scattered around the small town where he grew up. His best friend, Taylor, helps him in his search. She has always had a crush on him…how is this going to work out? They both grow in their faith and in their relationship while on their search. Light romance, dual time…or time travel! Love the mystery and can’t wait for the next book!

The Secret Door (Lost and Found #1) by Scott R. Rezer

After enjoying Rezer’s Christmas novella, The Realms of Glory, I looked forward to reading his latest release, The Secret Door. I had a strong feeling I’d love this story, and I wasn’t disappointed. For readers of both contemporary and historical novels, this dual-time story set in 2024 and 1777 is a win-win!

After serving in the army for a decade and not being home for three years, Brand Morgan is filled with remorse as he returns to New York to attend his mother’s funeral. If he’d known she was ill, he wouldn’t have waited so long to see her again.

Brand’s childhood friend, Taylor Ross, is still living in their hometown, and she wants to support him as he works through his grief. Although they were close at one time, both are hesitant to share the pain, guilt, and secrets they carry from their past.

While Brand was a young boy, his mother created fun treasure hunts for him. And now, he discovers she’s left another to be solved. One that involves a wardrobe, copied pages from an old journal, and a key. Through the entries written in 1777, the woman shares her life with a French trapper and Indian friends who belong to the Seneca nation. Of course, Brandon and Taylor are confused by the modern verbiage.

They work together to solve the puzzle they’ve been presented with. What message was his mother trying to convey through the hunt? Who was the woman in the journal? How is the present linked to the past?

I liked the character development in this story. Brand and Taylor struggle with sharing their past with each other because of the judgment they fear might follow. But as they begin to solve the clues his mother left behind, their trust in each other grows.

With well-written prose, the author takes readers on a journey through time. The book includes unexpected twists and turns—and an ending that is both surprising and satisfying. I’m not going to give away any spoilers. I’ll just say the author was clever in how several pieces came together.

The Secret Door is filled with family connections, adventure, mystery, secrets, romance, hope, and forgiveness. Yes, it has everything a reader might look for in a book! I loved it! Five stars.

Oh my days! What a story!
Hiding secrets. Why do we feel the need to do it? But for Brant Morgan and Taylor Ross, it’s what kept them from being together. Or at least, that’s what they both thought.
But as they search together for the clues his mother left him of a deep dark secret, Taylor and Brant rekindle the feelings they felt in high school, and their relationship takes root.
Meanwhile, the scavenger hunt takes them into unbelievable territory—time travel. Sure, we’ve all read about it in fiction or watched it in movies and TV, but to learn that it really has happened? And to his mother? Impossible!
And yet…
Louise Ahrenson has landed in a crude cabin and she has no idea how she got there, let alone how to return, well, to her own time. With her heart as torn as the war-torn landscape, deeply in love with her husband and missing her beloved sister—who did not travel with her—Louise settles in to a new life with the handsome, rugged, Michel Allende. Until she is thrust back to her old life, in her own time.
Now, I’ve read plenty of stories with a big fat plot twist, but this may very well be the first time I’ve read one with two plot twists. WHOPPER plot twists. The first one, while I didn’t expect it, didn’t surprise me. But that second twist!! Well, you’ll just have to read this story for yourself to find out.

I purchased this book and give my review of my own free will. The opinions expressed in my review are my own honest thoughts and reaction to this book.

This novel has me speechless! This is a well-done dual time line.
Going along with Brant and his childhood friend Taylor exploring the town for clues that his mother left him to solve a mystery that she had been keeping for years. I love the light romance between friends reconnected. This story kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering what and how this was going to play out. Not only do we have a mystery to solve and a romance in the making, but we learn a lot about the close relationship between Mother and Son....
I definitely recommend this book, and I can't wait for the second book.

WOW! In my opinion, Mr. Rezer's best book yet! His vivid detail of sights, sounds, and emotions, places you in the story right next to the characters.
I absolutely love this time slip. A treasure hunt through time, and family.... Will we discover new family? Or family with old secrets? Either way, history is given a new breath and brought back to life for Brant. With his best friend, Taylor by his side, Brant goes on a treasure hunt of a lifetime.

Always love a new author to follow! Just discovered Scott Rezer and his exceptional way of exploring history...this one by time travel. His use of descriptive language puts you right in the setting and helps you picture and understand the characters better than most. This story was particularly moving because of the secret Brant Morgan and his childhood friend, Taylor Ross discover. Definitely a surprise ending for me! Take the time for this one!

What if everything you have ever known your entire life was about to turn on its head? Meet Brant, an Army man who comes home to lay his mother to rest and reunites with his childhood best friend, Taylor.
Growing up his mother, would lead him on scavenger hunts and would leave clues around the house. This time, his mother created the ultimate scavenger hunt about a family secret that she could never reveal to Brant that changes everything.

Meanwhile, a woman named Louise mysterious travels back in time through a wardrobe(love the Narnia vibes) to 1777 in the middle of the Seneca community and meets a French trapper who becomes the man of her dreams. Who is Louise and how does she relate to Brant and his family?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I immediately related to the best friend turned lover scenario and love seeing Brant and Taylor's relationship with each other. At every turn, I thought I had figured out who Louise was but there were so many twists and turns that kept me guessing. Mr. Rezer did an exceptional job at describing what it was like for the Seneca community and beautifully interwove the two stories together. The epilogue ended on a cliffhanger which I hope the author will write a sequel because I can't wait to find out what happens.

The Past is the key to the Future in this modern and historical story about the love between a mother and her son. I highly recommend this wonderful book. I was given this advanced copy of the book by the author to write my honest thoughts and opinions.

There is no better time-slip author than Scott Rezer and he does it again with this novel. The characters are relatable and interesting and the storyline engaging. I enjoyed the historical aspects of the story. It raised my awareness of what some of our early settlers might have gone through.

The mystery is always there, whispering in the shadows but not quite coming fully to light until the end. Great suspense and the door is open to a sequel. I want more!!
