よつばと! [Yotsuba&!] #5
Yotsuba&!, Vol. 5
Yotsuba met a robot at Ena's house! Betcha haven't met one ever! It was THIIIIIS big - but not bigger than Jumbo or anything - and it ate money! Yotsuba's never met anyone who ate money before! Maybe it gets more powers with more money!? Yotsuba should try giving it more money next time! Huh...what happens when money-eating robots get full? Do they have to go to the little robots' room? Hmmmm...

Yotsubaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

This was a good collection. Yotsuba meets a robot named Cardbo, she helps out with chores around the house (watching laundry is fascinating,) and she meets her father's good-for-nothing friend Yanda, who just shows up, eats their instant ramen and tries to steal Yotsuba's ice cream. Yotsuba is not impressed.
They go stargazing with Jumbo. While in the dark park, Yotsuba shines a flashlight in her eyes, blinds herself, and then runs away into a garbage can. (I laughed for at least ten minutes.)
My favorite is when they run errands in the rain, and Yotsuba informs her father that certain puddles are better for stomping in than others, and then horrifies him with her behavior at the video rental store.
And then they take the train to the beach.

Vol. 1 ★★★★☆
Vol. 2 ★★★★☆
Vol. 3 ★★★★☆
Vol. 4 ★★★★☆
Chapter 32, "Rain," is by far my favorite of the volume. This has been true from the start, but it dawned upon me while reading this chapter that Kiyohiko Azuma is great at capturing a child's psyche. A little kid would totally borrow the same dolphin DVD that she has watched multiple times and had just returned.
Also, I appreciate how much thought has been put into the design of these volumes, especially with the inner covers and copyright pages.

Danbo!
World: Fantastic art as always, the emotions that the art is able to pull out is beautiful, it’s over the top, but it works with the Yotsuba. The world building is small and contained and fits the slice of life and that’s just fine.
Story: This is the story that introduces Danbo and she’s awesome! I also love the small little tales of Yotsuba helping around the house and of course her at the beach. Small little moments that are full of heart and tenderness. It’s a nice change of pace.
Characters: Yotsuba is amazing, her point of view is nice and refreshing and makes simple things special and unique. The rest of the cast is also solid with more and more depth being slowly drawn into them, from the family to Dad to Jumbo they are all well done.
I love this series, it’s such a feel good book.
Onward to the next book!

Loved this one, especially the beach, the robot ("don't crush Yotsuba's dreams!"), and Yotsuba's fury towards the visitor who eats her ice cream. Girl, I understand.

I always enjoy the everyday situations and personality-based gags/turning points in the Yotsuba stories. This volume had even more great moments than usual. I laughed hardest when that visitor (her dad's friend?) gave 5-year old Yotsuba a hard time and worked her up. The last two stories, one about a rainy day and one about a beach day, fit together so well. Very satisfying.
Five Years Later
I definitely understand more than I did. The Yotsuba series has a really strong cast of characters. Yotsuba's dad is responsible, mostly, but his friends seem to reveal how young he truly is, probably his late twenties or so I think.

2026 - Another enjoyable re-read with my daughter. She loved the beach segment so much, and thought hermit crabs were scary lol.
2024 - Beach day is best day!
Adorable and cute with plenty of laugh out loud moments. Thanks to having a daughter who's almost 5 this manga is 100% super relatable and funny as hell.

This volume features the best scene ever... a bored-by-days-of-rain Yotsuba creating an army of ghost creatures while Daddy isn't looking. All. Staring. At. Him. "Geez!! That's creepy!!" doesn't begin to describe how funny these two pages are. Awesome.

Yotsuba is quickly becoming my comfort character. Every time I feel depressed this little manga reminds me that every single moment is beautiful and that it’s okay to time each day to enjoy the small simple pleasures of life

I wad really amused by the character Yasuda. He reminded me of an uncle who gets their kicks out of pestering the $h!t out of their nieces and nephews. I loved him!

Whenever I hit a patch of lousy books, I let myself read a volume of Yotsuba. Absolutely one of the best comics out there, manga or otherwise.

Seperti biasa Yotsuba bermain dengan Ena & Miura. Kali ini dia bertemu Kardo (project PR Ena & Miura), Yanda (teman Ayah), melihat bintang (bersama Jumbo, ayah, Ena, Fuuka & Miura), dan pergi ke laut (bersama ayah, Fuuka & Ena).

Cute and funny as usually. We laughed a lot at the chapter with Yanda (?) and the robot at the beginning was pretty cute too.

Summer is ending for Yotsuba. I wonder what she'll do when the neighbors are all back in school.
I love how warm hearted this series is!
