People are always surprised I’m single, but it’s never bothered me. As a pro hockey player, I’d rather spend nights off watching Sebastian Archer host dating shows rather than hanging out at grimy sports bars to flirt with puck bunnies. But when my teammate signs me up as the leading man on Seeking Mr. Christmas Edition, my quiet life disappears. Instead of cozy nights in, I’m parading around Boston on festive dates with gorgeous women I’m supposed to be falling for. The only problem? The person I can’t stop thinking about is the show's charming, jock-despising, way too attractive host. It’s impossible. I’m supposed to find a wife. We’re being watched by millions of people, including my team’s management. And I’m straight. Obviously. Probably. Maybe not.
Luke is 24 and he is an NHL player. He's a friendly lovable guy, not the smartest person though. He likes to watch a reality TV show that is similar to The Bachelor, which is hosted by a guy he grew up with. He's got a strange fascination with the host Sebastian. Sebastian is 26, and he used to be a nerd, unpopular, not very attractive looking and bullied back in high school. His primary bully was Luke's brother Bryce, who made his life hell, Bryce has made gay jokes and spewed homophobic hate at Sebastian since before Sebastian even knew himself that he was gay.
Two of Luke's closest friends and teammates secretly sign him up for the Christmas special of the reality TV show, to be the bachelor. Luke doesn't really want to do it, but he's pressured into it. Sebastian is terrified that Luke is going to recognize him at first, Sebastian has left the past behind and he doesn't want it to be brought up. Luke makes the most awkward Bachelor ever and despite his horrible woodenness, his season is the most popular one ever. As they spend time together, Luke is much more interested in Sebastian than he is in the women. They finally talk after a lot of miscommunication and poor communication, and they decide to start something secretly, but they are not sure they can make it last. Sebastian's professional career is at risk, and also Luke's management at the NHL would love to have him be an example of heterosexuality given four out of 20 of his teammates recently came out as gay or bi. (Side note, the ending of the book never deals with Luke's NHL folks dealing with yet another queer player coming out, and that felt like a loose end that should have been wrapped up.)
This book was okay. There were some fun comic moments, some nice ridiculous moments. Luke was such a bad actor, he was so awkward every time he tried to lie or act. No one believed him and he went on the craziest of tangents, it made me cringe and laugh at the same time. And Luke while he had a concussion was hilarious, he didn't have control over what he was saying. Dmitri is a funny character and every time he piped in with something it made me smile. He is a Russian character that speaks his mind really bluntly, and just with those traits he does remind me fondly of Ilya from Heated Rivalry. Not that he's in Ilya's, Ilya is top tier. There were also some sweet moments of them falling in love and Luke just being a golden retriever type of human being.
But... There were some down sides. This book wasn't as good as Noah and Finn's story, which I gave five stars to.
Things I didn't like: - The communication. I hate poor communication / miscommunication and Sebastian and Luke avoided talking straight with each other for the majority of the book, both about their shared past and what they were planning to do in the present/future. They went a huge portion of the book without acknowledging that they knew each other from the past. It was painful and unrealistic to watch them not talk. - Luke spoke so immaturely at times. He called sex "special nightly activity" multiple times. Also the way he used the phrase "enter me" made me cringe. And in one scene, they were just randomly beaming at each other right before they had sex, and that word beaming just was so awkward for the moment. - there were a bunch of typos - I felt like the author left bread crumbs that Luke was either demisexual or gay, because there were multiple references to him not enjoying sex with women, him not liking casual hookups, and him not having any interest in porn. But the author never had Luke come to a conclusion about his identity, so that felt like a loose end. It wouldn't have bothered me if the author hadn't been so heavy-handed with the hints. - At 57%, there was this really awkward transition between scenes that seemed like an error. They went from making out as if they were about to have sex to talking for one page in bed intimately, and then all of a sudden they're leaving the hotel. What happened in between? Why did they stop? Based on the next time that they hook up, it's clear that they didn't have sex at the 57% Mark, but it was a real awkward transition and I didn't understand how they got from one moment to the other moment.
Some notable moments:
"“Hey. I don’t just like spotting Finn!” Noah exclaims. “Yeah, but you really like it,” I say. “It’s like a porno in here when you do that,” Troy says. “Well, not the kind of porn you watch,” Noah says. Troy turns away, and for a moment, my eyebrows furrow. “No one actually watches porn,” I say. Everyone stares at me."
"People think I have more chemistry with Sebastian? “I know him better, that’s all,” I say. Noah and Finn halt their tickling and stare at me. “And he slept in my arms,” I say. “Probably some biochemical reaction happened.” “He slept in your arms?” Finn sputters. “The electricity was out at the hotel. I wasn’t going to let him shiver!”"
"“That is a silly question,” Dmitri says, his voice stern. “Of course he will pick Flora.” “I like Willow,” Vinnie says. “You are gay man,” Dmitri says sternly. “You know nothing about women.” “Willow is intelligent,” Vinnie says. “And she is kind. They will have smart children.” “Nothing can make Luke’s children smart,” Axel says"
*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.
**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Definitely the best book in this series so far, but it was way too long and kept going in circles!
There were also a lot of inconsistencies and repetition, particularly around Sebastian's true identity and their feelings for each other and how the relationship would work. Luke basically tells Sebastian he knows who he really is, Sebastian knows that Luke knows, but in the next chapter it's back to Sebastian hoping Luke doesn't know and both of them are internally monologuing about it... It made no bloody sense!!
There also could have been about a hundred pages chopped out where they go round in circles about liking each other, but it'll never work because of x, y and z, but they want to be together, but they can never be together.... And then they just get together in the most impactful and implosive way that they'd been stressing about but suddenly everything is fine????
I also didn't really like how it was implied Luke was stupid or simple minded because he didn't hook up all the time and he didn't really seem to understand sexuality. Instead of one of his friends talking about the fact that maybe he could be demi, grey or ace, they just keep pressuring Luke and shoving him into situations he clearly didn't want to be in. So, so weird!
I'm curious about Dmitri and Oskar though but I'm in no mad rush to read their book either.
4⭐️ This is a sweet and fun holiday romance. Luke, a hockey player and devoted fan of the show Seeking Mr. Right (think of the Bachelor), is stunned when his teammates secretly apply for him to star in the show’s Christmas Special. Suddenly, he’s the next Mr. Right, with no way to back out. The twist? The host, Sebastian, is someone Luke's older brother used to bully in high school.
Sebastian isn’t thrilled either—at first. But Luke quickly proves he’s nothing like his brother. Sweet, genuine, and undeniably charming, Luke wins Sebastian over, despite Sebastian’s initial resistance. Their chemistry is undeniable, and watching their feelings grow is heart-melting.
Luke’s cluelessness about his own emotions is adorable, while Sebastian’s slow realization that he can’t resist Luke makes their dynamic even sweeter. These two were made for each other, and their journey is full of holiday cheer and romantic sparks.
So, I feel like the ridiculousness of this plot is the reason why it falls from 3 to 2 stars.
Because ok, the plot is that the host of a reality tv dating show falls in love with the man who is the bachelor for this season, who is an ostensibly straight hockey player on a team full of gay men (somehow, the “did you realize there are zero gay professional hockey players in the real world” feels particularly annoying here, and I don’t know why, but it does).
Anyhow, the two MCs are of course from the same small Massachusetts fishing village, which is of course adorable, but also (!) they both know that the other is from the same town, but neither of them knows that the other one knows.
Yeah.
Oh, and the hockey player’s older brother bullied the tv host, because of course we needed more tropes.
Wait, were you wanting tropes? How about “only one bed in a blizzard”? How about “nursing the boy with the concussion and suddenly we have sex”? How about “everyone else but me knows I’m queer”? How about “world weary and yet awesome Russian hockey player”? (I guess he gets his book next?) How about “omg the gay guy owns a *dildo*!”? How about “I never really liked porn, because it was about the wrong gender”?
Ugh.
Also, the hockey player catches the tv host when the team bus skids on the ice in New Hampshire before we even have the one-bed scene, but still we start to fantasize.
“The bus slides, and Sebastian’s phone slips from his hands. He scrambles down for it, but that’s not going to work. Not when the bus is careening over the ice. I pull him back. He tenses in my arms, his breath heavier than I imagined. It’s the sound I hear late at night sometimes, when I’m thrusting in and out of somebody, and sweat has slicked our bodies together.”
Yeah, that totally happened. So did the surprise lobster Benedict, because people totally have leftover lobster meat in their fridges.
This could be improved with, uh, a lot fewer cliches. But I’m not sure what would be left of it.
This is a reality tv contestant x host to more holiday hockey romance, featuring Luke and Sebastian, and is book two in the Hockey Rules series.
Luke gets signed up to be a contestant in a reality dating show by his teammates. He loves the show and watches it every year but never wanted to be part of it. When he meets Sebastian in person though, Luke can’t say no. Sebastian doesn’t think Luke remembers him from high school, but look remembers everything, and he hopes Sebastian doesn’t hold it against him.
This is pretty light and low angst read, but the past bullying from Luke’s older brother has left some scars on Sebastian. Luke always thought he was straight until he was in Sebastian orbit. I love that he embraces his feelings and dives right into exploring everything with Sebastian. The reality show sounded hilarious, Luke sounded so awkward on camera, and I love how the women contestants were right behind the MMCs getting together. Yay!
I picked up this book in the middle of the series because, Christmas, but I will definitely will read more of this series.
Things to expect in this book are:
Book 2 in series MM holiday romance Hockey player x TV host Reality tv series Bully’s younger brother Hurt / Comfort Forced proximity One bed / snowed in Bi awakening Calls him baby Bit of spicy times Secret relationship Annoying older brother Spectacular coming out Found family HEA
Seeking Mr. Right is Luke’s favorite show. He is a sucker for this reality show about finding true love. And the host Sebastian has definitely grabbed his attention. But he is shocked when he sees an announcement that he will be the next Mr. Right for the Christmas Special. He definitely didn’t apply…but his teammates did. For him. Now he has no choice but to participate. Not when everyone around him thinks it is a great idea and he fears getting everyone in trouble. But being around Sebastian is making him realize a lot about himself and feelings for Sebastian are getting more intense. Sebastian isn’t happy that Luke was picked. The younger brother of his high school bully? Pass. But Luke is so different from his brother. Sweet and kind and just way too good of a guy. Not to mention absolutely gorgeous. But no. Sebastian can’t have a crush on Luke. He won’t. But how can he not the more he gets to know him? These two are in deep trouble. Really enjoyed Luke and Sebastian’s story! These two were so sweet. Luke is this genuine nice guy. Especially for a hockey player. But it is so clear to literally everyone around him how he feels about Sebastian. Yet it takes him a bit to realize what it means. Adorable. And I loved watching Sebastian fall for Luke. There was just no way these two weren’t meant to be!

I had more fun reading this book than the first one. For one, the characters are more well-rounded with a back story that explains some of the motivation behind their behavior and actions. It makes them more relatable ( even if the number of man-loving players on the Boston Blizzards is becoming a bit unbelievable at this point ) and likable. For another, I'm a complete sucker for the dating show going sideways plot, and it was handled great in this story, mostly.
The half star deduction is for the miss on Sebastian facing and overcoming his past and the issue that it’s just glossed over as solved in the end. Still, l loved how Sebastian and Luke grew closer with each chapter, their moments of jealousy were real fun to read and the side characters made the book even better. Dimitri really became one of my absolute fave characters of the series, and I have a feeling there is something going on between Troy and the team's massage therapist, but we'll see I guess.
Rule #2: Never Join a Christmas Dating Show is everything I hoped for and more! Portia Blake once again delivers a swoon-worthy, hilarious, and heartwarming romance in her Hockey Rules series. Watching the shy, hockey-playing protagonist navigate the chaos of a Christmas dating show was pure fun, but it’s his unexpected chemistry with Sebastian, the charming, sharp-tongued host, that truly steals the show. The slow-burn tension, the holiday magic, and the protagonist’s journey of self-discovery had me hooked from start to finish. I loved the blend of humor, heartfelt moments, and festive vibes—it’s the perfect winter read. Whether you’re new to the series or already a fan, this book is a holiday romance you won’t want to miss!.

This was not what Luke was hoping for. Yes, the show, Seeking Mr. Right, is his favorite and he happens to be drawn to the show's host , Sebastian, but that does not mean anything. Until Luke is picked to be the next potential Mr. Right and he is expected to squire around lots of ladies. Oh, and in addition to the audience and the public, his hockey team thinks this is a good idea as well. Luke and Sebastian actually are from the same town and they know of one another. Sebastian is wary of Luke having had a not so great history with Luke's brother who bullied him - no worries with Luke. And Luke is struggling with some feelings that are not so straight. He is interested - just not in the women. Romance is on the horizon. Just not where the show and his team were hoping it would come from. This was too cute.

Hockey, Christmas themed dating show, hilarious, slow burn, a bit of angst around Sebastian’s past, chemistry and fun-times.
Another really enjoyable book in this series, Luke is the best, a really nice, genuine guy and perfect for Sebastian, though there are a few hurdles for them along the way.
I also enjoyed the side characters, including the final ladies on the show and I loved Dmitri!! I can't wait for his book.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. A bit of matchmaking and media wanting its own way has Luke starring in a reality TV show to find love. I like how he does find love even if it is not with who the producers wanted. He falls for Sebastian and Sebastian for him. The best is when Luke declares it live on the show. I'm glad that it doesn't really affect Sebastian's career in the end and only changes it for the better.
While the plot is a bit contrived in a few places, for the most part the storyline holds the reader’s interest. Reasonable character development with a minimum of past history, and an acceptable representation of hockey players in general. Ends well, with a promise of a HEA.
I liked this book it was very cute and a bit cliche but the thing that made it hard to read was the amount of grammatical errors. It made some parts very confusing and was just annoying. It was like it never went through an editor. Other than that I loved the plot
This book made me laugh so many times. Some of the things Luke said in this book just came out of nowhere and I just couldn’t help but laugh. This is a cute little holiday romance would totally read again!!!
I just love a book where I like all the good people and hate all the bad. Books where there's romance and heat, but also believability and fun. Definitely need to smile from begining to end. All those are right here in this amazing series. Can't wait for book #3!!!
I loved the first book about Finn and Noah. This one was so much better. The storyline of how they came together is one I haven’t seen before and was so sweet. This one made me laugh so much! I love books that make me giggle.
This had the makings of a cute story but it feels like it was written by a teenager. It also needs to be edited. There are so many errors. Characters referred to by the wrong name, plot issues, etc.
