Another great read by Connie Queen. Every time I think I have it figured out, I’m wrong. Love Saint Bernards. Best one yet.

3.5 stars

This Christian romantic suspense started with a bang. When Holly, a pregnant widow, goes to buy a new car, in a new town, she witnesses a double murder and so the chase begins. She runs into Clive, a former deputy sheriff who decides to protect her. As she is chased and they fight off the bad guys, they spend a lot of time together. This was a nice read that moved quickly. It was high on the action but low on the romance. The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 1. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

I received an ARC of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Gosh, these books capture me from the beginning and then the author adds a pregnant victim?!? This was next level and I worried throughout the book for Holly and her baby. It's such a good thing that she came in contact with Clive and his family.

I was left guessing throughout the book who was behind all of the criminal activity.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.

Wow! This is my first book by this author, but it won’t be my last. You were pulled into the story from the first page, which is always a sign of a great book. There’s plenty of murder and mayhem and all kinds of things to keep you turning the pages. I was given a complementary copy of this book and the opinions are my own.

"Shielded by the Cowboy" is a romantic suspense. Holly's husband died in a car accident and her mother-in-law wants her baby when it's born. She's got money and influence and Holly doesn't even have family support, so Holly moved to a small town to get some distance from her influence and make her own life. Clive's wife was shot while standing next to him, and she lost their baby and divorced him. He feels like a failure as a protector. Protecting Holly and her unborn baby will prove to everyone (including himself) that he can do it.

I loved Holly. She's learning to stand up for herself, quick thinking, determined, and willing to accept protection because she needs help. Clive was very sweet to her and protective, which she liked, and he came with a supportive family (unlike her own). I think she was hooked early on.

Clive got along well with Holly. He didn't trust his judgment because he was so far wrong with his ex-wife (with an affair uncovered during the story), yet he proposed marriage within 3 days of meeting Holly. Um, I can see your judgment problem comes from rushing things, Clive... They married after 11 weeks, 2 weeks before the baby's due. While they seemed a good match and I enjoyed the story, it felt to me like he was trying to slip back into the life he lost (with a pregnant wife) now that he successfully saved her from harm.

The suspense came from non-stop danger to Holly because the bad guys wanted to prevent her from becoming a witness against them. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this suspenseful novel with enjoyable characters.

I received a free ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Shielded by the Cowboy by Connie Queen is a solid romantic suspense that delivers where it counts—in the mystery. This standalone kept me turning pages to uncover who the bad guys were and what drove them, with a final reveal that was genuinely unexpected and tied everything together well.

The male lead carried much of the story for me. His backstory—having lost a baby and been left by his wife—gave him emotional depth, and his protective, hardworking nature made him easy to root for. I struggled more with the female lead, whose voice felt overly formal and occasionally pulled me out of the story. Their chemistry was acceptable but never quite sparked, resulting in a slow-burn romance that felt gentle and predictable rather than compelling.

The small-town ranch setting provided a familiar, comfortable backdrop without overwhelming the plot. The suspense element was definitely the strongest aspect, unfolding at a steady pace that kept me engaged. There are faith elements present (prayers, references to God helping the heroine), but they're light enough that they didn't interfere with my enjoyment as a non-religious reader.

The ending wrapped up the mystery cleanly and satisfyingly. This is a sweet, low-steam romance (a few kisses, nothing more) that will appeal to readers who enjoy slow-burn suspense with mystery elements and don't mind a more traditional, gentle approach to romance.

Best for: Readers who prioritise suspense over spice, enjoy protective cowboy heroes, and appreciate clean romance with faith elements.

Thunder Ridge Justice
My favorite quote is
She sank lower in the seat as her hands protectively cradled her belly. Her eyes blinked rapidly as she watched the SUV pull into the parking lot. “I don’t want to put anyone in danger, but I’ll tell you anything if you’ll get me out of here.” Her hand waved and swatted the air. “Go. Go. Go.”
I recommend this book.

I love the start of this new series called Thunder Ridge Justice. In this first book you have a young lady, Holly Myers who is new to town. She is a recent widow and expecting a baby. When she sets up a meeting to buy an used car, she witnesses a murder. She has no choice but to leave the crime scene as quickly as possible. She only gets a short distance away when the car runs out of gas, thankfully a truck comes along driven by Clive Cantrell. From there on out it's non-stop action, with Clive trying to keep his truck and load of horses from being run off the road while protecting this new stranger. Who are these people who murdered a couple, then blew up their house and keeps attacking Holly? What could possibly be going on in such a small community, where everyone knows you? I enjoyed trying to figure out these questions, while being kept on the edge of my seat. I can't wait for the other books in this series. You will get a glimpse of Clive's siblings that I'm pretty sure that will be centered around the rest of the books. I would like to thank the publisher and author for an early copy of this book. I was not required to leave a positive review, and all opinions are what I thought of the book.

Shielded By The Cowboy is Connie Queen’s first novel in the Thunder Ridge Justice series.

The story introduces Holly, a pregnant widow who becomes the sole witness to a brutal double murder, and Clive, a former deputy sheriff now working for his family’s security business.

The novel opens with a gripping, suspenseful scene that sets the tone and steadily builds tension throughout the story. One of the strengths of the book is the developing relationship between Holly and Clive, as both characters learn to trust each other and rely on one another for support in dangerous circumstances.

At times, the dialogue feels slightly disjointed or forced, and with a relatively short length of 208 pages, the pacing can feel rushed—especially toward the end, where the resolution comes together very quickly.

Overall, Shielded By The Cowboy is a clean, action-packed romantic suspense that delivers plenty of excitement and keeps the story moving from start to finish.

I am grateful to the author and publisher for providing me with an advance review copy. I was under no obligation to provide a review, and my opinions are entirely my own.

Prepare yourself for a marathon, and I mean that literally like running alongside these characters, but also reading this suspense-filled book in one sitting.

Holly Myers is pregnant, recently widowed and wants a change of scenery. Instead she has fallen into a nightmare after witnessing a double murder. Her once quiet life has been shattered and her life is in grave danger.

Former Deputy Sheriff Clive Cantrell has no problem keeping Holly safe, but he has his hands full. The killers are hot on their heels and there is one surprise after another, including problems at Clive's own ranch.

The suspense is red hot and will keep you glued to the pages. The characters are very likable and easy to get to know. I have no problem giving this inspirational romantic mystery as solid five stars. It is a solid mystery with plenty of action to keep your interest peaked as you fly through the pages.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I enjoyed getting to know the main character Holly in this fast paced, clean Love Inspired Suspense story.

Holly arrives in town to start a new life after the death of her husband and ends up meeting Clive when she finds herself on the run and needing protection against the unknown after witnessing a murder. They race against the clock to stay alive, trying to learn to trust and rely on each other. Clive is revisiting his worst nightmare; whether he can protect Holly and her unborn baby when he couldn't even protect his own.

This story had lots of suspense and twists with danger around every turn! I loved the Texas location and large family theme. I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read more in this new Thunder Ridge Justice series!

Shielded by the Cowboy by Connie Queen is a page turner. I liked Holly who was looking for a fresh start and to protect her unborn child. Clive is kind and protective despite the memories Holly and her situation bring up. Clive has a friendly, supportive family. I enjoyed the suspense and action. The tension builds as the story progresses. There are twists and turns that keep Clive and Holly on their toes. If Holly and Clive are to survive, they will need to trust each other. I like how their relationship progresses, but I did feel it was a tad rushed at the end. The author painted a picture with her words that brought the Texas setting to life. This was my first Connie Queen book, and I'm eager to read more of her stories. Shielded by the Cowboy is a fast-moving tale with an unresponsive car, an astounding death, a protective cowboy, determined killers, trust troubles, a monster mother-in-law, and a helpful family.

This was my first book by Connie Queen and first love inspired book - I loved the fast paced action and the length was great for a read-in-an-afternoon session. From the first scene there was plenty of action for Holly but thankfully Clive came along at just the right time. As they both work through past hurts their forced proximity opened their eyes for hope in the future, and naturally there was plenty of attraction and some romance along the way. Add in continual danger and you are left never quite knowing what will happen next.
I really enjoyed this book - it was a sweet, clean, easy read with the right balance of action, danger and romance.  I really enjoy reading series so I am pleased to see that it looks like this is book 1 of the Thunder Ridge series.

Pregnant widow Holly Myer finds protection with Deputy Sheriff Clive Cantrell, after witnessing a double murder.

There is a lot going on in this fast paced suspense, with Holly trying to stay one step ahead of each danger. Clive is a hard working rancher who can't refuse helping a pregnant woman in need. I liked how he steps up to help keep her and her baby safe. This book's plot has a lot going on, with a lot of pieces to put together. Clive has a great family, and I liked how Holly is willing to do what is best for her baby.

An engaging plotline, great characters, and a lot going on. Makes for an enjoyable and fast read.

Thank you to Harlequin Romance for the complimentary ARC via Netgalley. All opinions are my own and given freely.

Shielded by the Cowboy has a great premise. New to town, pregnant, and looking to start over is our heroine. She finds herself in danger after witnessing a murder. And stumbles upon the hero who offers to help. From there it's forced proximity in keeping her safe, while solving the case of what is going on in this smalltown.

Unfortunately, the execution didn't work for me. This story leans more on told, then felt. An where was the romance? There is no development of a relationship. It just is one in the end. Not the story for me, but it might be for you! Leaving this one unrated.

This book was a great way to end my 2025 reading year! I loved the plot, the engaging characters, and the inspiring faith message. Shielded by the Cowboy had non-ending danger, intense emotions, and questions that kept me turning the pages. What secrets were hidden in this small community? Would Holly and Clive's dangerous predicament create a bond of friendship and trust that couldn't be severed?

Shielded by the Cowboy is the first book in the Thunder Ridge Justice series. I recommend it to all who enjoy romantic Christian suspense.

Fantastic Story

This is such a fantastic story! It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The pacing and the balance between romance and intrigue were spot on. Although Holly and Clive's trust issues caused some minor delays in finding the culprit, they also made their developing relationship more meaningful. I was holding my breath for them and for the mystery to be solved, and I was not disappointed. This book is a wonderful read that I highly recommend.

Connie Queen has done it again! Holly Myers is pregnant and widowed and looking for a fresh start for her and her baby. Little does she know that she will witness a double murder and that fresh start is to be no more for a while. Now she's on the run and former Deputy Sheriff Clive Cantrell is trying to keep her alive and safe. Evil seems to be closing in on Holly and will stop at nothing to silence her for what she saw! As Holly and Clive try to figure out the motive, the clues point to an operation hidden on Clive's family ranch. Can they stay alive long enough to uncover the operating and keep themselves alive? Read to find out, such a great book. Definitely recommend!

This is the first book I've read by Connie Queen, but definitely won't be my last!!
From the very first page, you will be immediately sucked into the life and action of Holly and how when life had her upside down, fate brought her redemption. Even though it'll keep you on your toes! I read this book within a few hours because I literally could not put it down. I was on pins and needles as we are thrown into a life of dirty cops, drugs, and the amazing love only God brings!!
I highly recommend this book especially if you like non-stop action!!!

Shielded by the Cowboy is a gripping blend of danger, emotion, and tender second chances. Connie Queen delivers a story that pulls you in from the first chapter and keeps you invested with its strong characters, steady suspense, and the quiet, genuine moments of faith woven throughout. I loved the protective hero, the resilient heroine, and the way their connection grows naturally even in the middle of chaos. It’s the kind of story that leaves you rooting for both their safety and their future.
