“Consider that a lesson in how to keep your mouth shut.”
Oh. My. Goodness. Y’all. I have never met a Jessica Patch book that I didn’t LOVE, but A Killer in Texas just became my very fave of her novels, with my very fave of her heroines (and honestly, probably my fave romantic suspense heroine EVER by any author), my very fave of her heroes, and my new very fave Love Inspired Suspense kiss. I didn’t just LOVE this book; I inhaled it. I was so sad to see it end because I wasn’t done spending time with Axel and Libby, but I also had a huge grin on my face because I loved everything about it from the first word to the last.
Axel Spears (co-owner of Spears & Bow protection specialists) and Libby Winters (former Secret Service agent) are best friends and work partners who pose no danger to their ‘sworn off romance’ hearts… or so they think when our story begins. Before Axel and Libby knew each other, Axel’s wife was brutally murdered by a serial killer and Libby’s fiance was killed by the First Lady’s stalker. Needless to say, both of these protagonists have some deep issues to work through when it comes to surrendering to the deepening ‘more than friends’ feelings between them. I loved the layers this added to their story, as well as the sizzle of suppressed longing it brought to their interactions once kissing each other becomes a thing. I adored their easy banter right from the start, and I couldn’t quit grinning (or fanning) as their chemistry naturally sparked into a different sort of interaction. It’s been famously said that “Love is friendship set on fire.” And wowza, does Axel and Libby’s ‘safe’ friendship ever go ablaze as this novel progresses! (I just realized I’m using a lot of air quotes in this review, which makes me think of Joey in Friends, but it is what it is.) Goodness, I love these two together. Still grinning. And swooning. Even if they did also drive me crazy by how strongly they resisted falling in love.
Axel is a hunk of a man, physically and swooniliciously, and it will be no sacrifice for you to spend time with him on these pages. He’s witty and kind, with a depth of spirit that I found meaningful and a gentle strength that can get fierce when Libby is in danger. And Libby… oh how I loved her. I want to be her best friend. But I would honestly be just a little bit scared of her too. She can kick some serious butt and is definitely more warrior princess than fragile porcelain, but she has a softer side and a great sense of humor too. I had so much fun watching her put Axel in his place when he needed it and holding her own against the serial killer who has her in his sights. (The suspense in A Killer in Texas is … well… killer. I can’t count the number of times I jumped or gasped while reading this book, whether it was from a gunshot coming out of nowhere or an attacker surprising me as well as Axel and Libby. My mind was whirring the whole time trying to figure out who the serial killer was before it was too late.)
Bottom Line: Ok listen. I laughed. I swooned. I gasped. I may have whispered “oh noooo he did not” at my Kindle more than once But y’all. Jessica R. Patch has outdone herself with A Killer in Texas! This story gave me everything I want in a romantic suspense – fabulously-layered (and kick-butt) characters, electric chemistry, smart & sassy dialogue, and danger that kept me glued to the page. Axel and Libby are perfection together as best friends who absolutely should not be kissing… except they absolutely SHOULD be and oh look, they finally are, and my inner KissingBooks fangirl could not have been more delighted. The banter, the trust, the suppressed feelings finally igniting? Like I said, PERFECTION. Plus, the suspense is pulse-pounding, the villain is genuinely terrifying, and the near-misses …. ack! I still haven’t quite recovered, and I actually hope I never do. Because (in case you couldn’t tell) I loved every last thing about A Killer in Texas, and I can’t wait for the next book in this series! (Also… Archer? I’m dying to know your story, dude.)
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
I devoured this one in less than 24 hours. I would have finished it in one sitting but, sleep 🛌.
Have you ever read a book and wanted to reach inside and knock some heads together? Rattled some cages. Bonk some sense into thick heads?
Yeah, that’s Axel and Libby. Those two drove me NUTS! And that’s quality writing—feeling like the characters are so real you can yell at them to stop being so stupid.
Have you ever been on a roller coaster or on a very hilly road, hit a dip and felt your stomach drop down to your toes?
Yeah, this is that kind of book. The ending is wild and unexpected, but Jessica R. Patch is known for red herrings and bait and switch. She’s a masterclass.
I received an advance copy from the publisher. I’m under no obligation and my review has not been solicited. Highly recommended!
A Killer in Texas is the book you can’t put down! Such a great suspense thriller that is constant action, has many twists and turns, and is a great storyline that keeps you engaged from the very first page. I highly recommend this book!
I read an advanced copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Killer in Texas is a high-octane thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Jessica R. Patch masterfully builds tension as Libby, a former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, finds herself transformed from the protector to the prey. Being stalked by a serial killer known as “The Eye” creates a chilling atmosphere where danger lurks in every shadow and across every rooftop. I loved the intensity of the team dynamic, especially with Axel's personal mission for justice, which added so much emotional weight to the story.
The pacing of this book is relentless. Watching Libby struggle to protect those she loves while trying to outmaneuver a killer who is always one step ahead made for a gripping "cat and mouse" game. Her journey through the chaos, eventually taking her path into her own hands to find peace, was a highlight for me. And that ending! It was the perfect conclusion to a high-stakes ride that I didn't quite see coming. If you love romantic suspense with a terrifyingly smart villain, this is a must-read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book had a lot of action & breath stealing scenarios. I enjoyed watching the relationship between the main characters relationship build from really good friends to something much more. Watching their responses to grief & how they handled it felt real in the different stages they were in. I thought I had an idea of who the villain was, but talked myself out of it the more I read.
A Killer in Texas is a heart-thumping, unputdownable suspense thriller! The fast-paced action swept me up immediately and carried me through to the end. The masterfully plotted, unpredictable storyline, with brilliantly placed twists that blew my predictions out of the water, kept me guessing and then gasping in surprise at the astonishing reveal of the relentless serial killer. Anchoring the unfolding drama are realistic, memorable characters who I made an emotional connection with instantly. I enjoyed the budding, tension-packed friends-to-more romance between tough, protective hero Axel Spears and determined heroine Libby Winters. I greatly appreciate the way Ms. Patch weaves in faith reminders encouraging trusting God. Libby's journey from making fear-driven choices to making faith-driven ones is heart-tugging and inspiring. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it as a must read for fans of romantic suspense with thriller vibes and uplifting spiritual truths! I read an advanced copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This one is so good!! Wow! What Jessica Patch can do in a short form novel! This book is packed full of mystery and intrigue. A creepy serial killer is on the loose and now has bodyguard Libby Winters in his sights. Her friend and fellow bodyguard and boss, Axel Spears, feels the need to protect her while trying to protect their client. Best friends for several years, their interactions are sweet and later, romantic, and the suspense is outstanding. I was drawn into this story and kept guessing as I turned page after page. Although characters appear in this story that were introduced in previous books, it can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone.
I was given this book by the author. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Probably one of the best books I have read in a while while loved all the characters and how it keeps you guessing throughout all the book looking forward to archers book.
This book races at breakneck speed from one surprising revelation to another while the author also plants numerous fake trails. I kept guessing incorrectly and enjoyed myself the entire time that I was immersed in the story of a clever and vicious serial killer. “The Eye” wreaks havoc in Axel’s life and is back to the same game, attacking Libby, his colleague and best friend. The dual plot line also deals with Libby and Axel being on protection detail for Harley Coburn who has been threatened several times and even attacked. So, in addition to protecting Harley, the protection duo has to figure out how to keep Libby out of harm’s way from Axel’s arch-nemesis. I really enjoyed how the story flowed and how the author dovetailed her two plot lines together for a flawless and completely satisfactory ending. I found the characters relatable and the plot well-written and engaging, not to mention scary at times. The story captivated me from beginning to end and is a must read for fans of well-crafted romantic suspense. I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book and I also purchased a copy for my personal library. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions expressed are my own.
A great suspense. A lot of twists and turns. The killer is always close by but will tell they figure out who it is or is it more than one person. I loved Libby, she was so brave and determined to find the killer. Libby and Axel are working together. Do they have feelings for each other? Read and see. A very exciting never a dull moment.
I received an advanced copy of the book from the author. This book review is my own opinion.
How does she do it?? How does Jessica R. Patch pack so much into such a short book?? There is edge-of-your-seat suspense, a dash of romance and a very unexpected ending !From the very first page , I was drawn into Libby and Axels story and couldn't put it down until I finished it!
In the book, Libby finds herself the target of a horrible serial killer and it is truly a terrifying place for her to be. She doesn't want to tell her team at first because she is worried about how they will react and because her boss and partner lost his wife to the same killer . And as if that isn't enough, the person they are guarding is a person of interest in the same serial killer Investigation!!
Overall, This book was amazing and I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!
I was given this book by the author to read and give my opinion - all thoughts are my own!
A creepy serial killer is stalking Libby Winters for several months.
She and another team member are hired to guard a man who has been accused of being this very serial killer. The attacks don’t stop and Libby and Axel have to figure out the identity of the serial killer before Libby loses her life or their client gets killed.
I really enjoyed the first book in the series with a high-action attempted kidnapping as the main characters are hunted on a remote mountainside. But I must admit that book 2 was my favorite! It was the perfect mix of psychological suspense and action - not to mention the creepy actions of the serial killer. And with all Jessica Patch books, it comes with a twisty ending that I didn’t see coming.
Plug in your night light and prepare to be up all night as you try to figure out who the serial killer is and why he’s targeting Libby.
Jessica R Patch takes us on another action packed ride full of twists and turns! Well written, engaging and realistic characters, and so many twists and turns you won’t see the final reveal coming until it creeps up on you, ready to stab those false assumptions you made with a sharp knife! The romance is a slow burn as the main characters work through the fear and anxiety they have from their past, learning to trust God and each other. I enjoyed seeing characters from the first book in the series, but you don’t need to read the other book first. This is a great, fast paced romantic suspense book and I definitely recommend reading it. I read an advanced reader copy of the book, all thoughts and opinions in this review are honest and my own original expressions.
Oh my goodness Jessica R Patch has done it again!! A Killer in Texas was amazing. This story kept me turning pages, I couldn't read fast enough. Libby Winters is a bodyguard for a protection specialists company, her partner Axel Spears is her partner. But since his wife was murdered by a serial killer he being over protective. But when Libby is then targeted by the killer named The Eye he'll do anything to keep her safe in spite of Libby's objections. However when the close calls amp up Libby is glad Axel has her back. This story was riveting, but that ending! I was blown away, didnt see that coming at all!!
A Killer in Texas by Jessica R. Patch is a fast paced, slow burn romantic suspense book that is so good I stayed up way too late because I needed to know how it ended.
I loved the tension between Axel and Libby as they fight attraction while guarding Harley, a suspected serial killer from the victim’s families and trying to track down the real killer, The Eye.
In true Jessica R. Patch form there are so many twists that you don’t know which way is up and the ending is a masterfully crafted surprise. This book is definitely a great read.
I received an arc of this book from the author. My opinions are my own.
Oh my goodness! This book was so incredibly good. The characters were awesome and the storyline kept you on your toes. I could not put it down and I read it in one day. I love how Libby and Axel were the best of friends and knew everything about each other. That is why they were such good partners. And Archer, don’t even get me started. All I will say is he is a great and funny character. I would love to know more about him. Jessica did an amazing job with these characters and with this storyline. So worth the read!
Amazing as usual! Libby is being stalked by a serial killer. Her best friend and colleague Axel’s wife was murdered by the same serial killer. Together they must find him and keep each other safe. Jessica Patch is a master of keeping you interested and invested in the story. She keeps you guessing until the very last chapter. She is definitely an author I always buy no matter what!
I received a copy of this book. Great Story and wonderful characters. Wow. Full of action and plot twists. Looking forward to reading more books by author.
Another GREAT read from Jessica R. Patch! I loved getting to know Axel and Libby! Jessica is the Queen of action-packed, on the edge of your seat, twisty tales!
Jessica R. Patch takes you on a wild ride through Texas in her latest release, A Killer in Texas, the second installment of Ms. Patch’s Elite Protectors Series! At Spears and Bow, a protection company, co-owner Axel Spears hired Libby Winters to be a bodyguard-for-hire and his partner in the field. Axel and Libby quickly become best friends, bonding over shared experiences with grief and leaving their respective jobs because of it. Libby loved her job protecting the President’s Family as a Secret Service agent, but after getting brutally injured in the field and losing her fiancé in the process, Libby was looking for something not so high stakes—making working at Spears and Bow an answered prayer. Experienced as an FBI agent, Axel had been working for years trying to catch the elusive serial killer known as The Eye—a person brutally murdering women who work in the medical industry. When The Eye hits too close to home, killing Axel’s wife, Cheryl, Axel quits the FBI and starts Spears and Bow, making his life’s mission to catch The Eye. Libby and Axel’s latest assignment brings them closer to The Eye than ever before, bringing buried fears and untold feelings to the surface, equally as dangerous as The Eye himself.
Jessica R. Patch has a way of crafting one of the best edge-of-your-seat stories you will ever read, while at the same time allowing her characters to go through real-life issues while staying rooted in Faith. Jessica R. Patch’s A Killer in Texas kept me on the edge of my seat from the get-go as Libby and Axel danced around their true feelings about life and each other while keeping a lookout for The Eye and dodging the bad guys right and left, turning to God every chance they could in prayer. I loved meeting Libby and Axel (and that they were written to be in their 40s)! I thought Axel’s name really fit his character. I love that Libby was literal tough-as-nails and that she wasn’t afraid to put people in their place when warranted. (Read A Killer in Texas because those scenes where Libby does that are a hoot to read!) I really loved and appreciated how Ms. Patch approached Faith and Fear in the book and illustrated how they can intermingle in a person’s life through the plot. I love the Message of Faith while in Fear that Ms. Patch painted in the storyline and what the characters learned because of it. (I even highlighted the words that Ministered to me in the book, which I rarely do for a suspense book.) I appreciated the fact that Axel understood where Libby was with her fear and trauma, respecting it and gently encouraging her to move forward. I like to think that I’ve read enough mystery books that I can often guess what’s going on, but with A Killer in Texas I was finding it out in real time along with Axel and Libby–and as an avid reader, I really appreciate it! I would say the intrigue of A Killer in Texas was in the caliber of the TV show Criminal Minds, with the banter like you would find on Bones. If you are looking for a read that’s full of grittily intrigue while being full of Faith in the midst of Fear, then I highly recommend A Killer in Texas by Jessica R. Patch!
Have you read A Killer in Texas? What did you think of the book?
I would like to thank Jessica R. Patch for giving me a copy of A Killer in Texas to review and for letting me be a part of the Launch Team. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
My review is also on my blog Leslie’s Library Escape and Amazon.
A Killer in Texas is a heart-pounding, unputdownable suspense thriller that grabs you from the very first page and never lets go. The nonstop action, expertly woven twists and turns, and fast-paced storyline kept me completely engaged and constantly guessing. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the plot took another sharp turn, leading to a shocking and unforgettable reveal of the relentless serial killer.
The characters are realistic, memorable, and easy to connect with emotionally. I especially enjoyed the tension-filled friends-to-more romance between tough, protective Axel Spears and determined Libby Winters, which added depth and heart to the story without slowing the momentum. I also appreciated how faith was thoughtfully woven throughout the book. Libby’s journey from making fear-driven choices to faith-driven ones was both heart-tugging and inspiring, adding an uplifting layer to the suspense.
This book is a must-read for fans of romantic suspense with strong thriller vibes, meaningful character growth, and a powerful storyline that keeps you turning pages late into the night. I highly recommend it!
I read an advanced copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was a bit different in that one of the team trying to catch a killer was being stalked by that killer, and she had not told her team that until she was pretty much forced to.
Patch has gotten a reputation of writing more thrillers than just suspense, and this book definitely leans more towards the thriller side.
I have always liked series where there is a team that is in every book, with each character getting their own story, and that is what Patch is doing with this series. I read and enjoyed the first book in this series, but this one was even better, in my opinion.
The author did a great job of building the suspense and drama while keeping the reader guessing as to who the Eye really was....and by the way, though it was very creepy, I loved the angle Patch played with the hymn. I admit I was totally surprised at the end when the bad guy was revealed.
This was a great suspenseful read that brought back the team from the first book.
Special thanks to the author for an advance e-book copy of this novel. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.
This book had a lot of action and violent moments with a little mystery thrown in. I didn’t like the woman in this story.
This story is about a woman named Libby Winters. She is a bodyguard who is guarding a person of interest in several homicides. She is attacked by the real serial killer known as “The Eye”. He has been stalking her for the past two months. Now he’s ready to make his next move. Determined not to repeat past mistakes, protection specialist Axel Spears vows to keep his partner safe and take down the man who murdered his wife. They are caught in a perilous game of cat and mouse. Can they unmask and bring down their deadly enemy before they become the next victims ???
Libby was in the Secret Service protecting the President and the First Lady and yet she is spooked by a stalker ??? She pushes Axel away at several moments in which she needed her partner that she cared before. The story didn’t mention their relationship before they became partners and these two people didn’t even date in this story. I didn’t believe the romantic feelings between these two people. I also felt that Libby who used to be in the Secret Service wouldn’t be spooked off by a stalker.
Wow! Another exciting read from Jessica R. Patch!! I simply couldn't put Libby and Axel's story down until I finished it. They wouldn't let me!! I love it when a book doesn't let me put it down. This is a fast action story with lots of twists and turns that kept my attention all the way through. I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. I liked the slow budding romance that was added in too. I'd take a hunky man to be my rescuer any day! "Sigh" Libby is one lucky lady who can't see what's right in front of her. I sometimes wanted to give her a talking to. Axel too at times. But I loved in getting to know them. I hated to say goodbye to them. They became my friends. Sometimes they made me grin too. I couldn't help myself. This book is worth a reread in the future. I added it to my shelf of favorites 😍. 5 stars for an excellent read! Well done! I love these stories. My thanks for the opportunity to read and review this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
Jessica R. Patch is so good at setting a fast paced, edge of your seat story! In "A Killer in Texas" we join the elite protectors from a prior book, but the characters were not major characters in the last story, so its not required that you have read the first book. The action starts basically on page one and continues until the very end. The Author is excellent at misdirection and sending you down a twisty turny path to find out the truth behind the mystery (s!). Just when you think you have it all figured out, you are wrong! I am not going to give away any of the story since Jessica's books are best discovered as you read, but you will enjoy Axel and Libby as your main characters as they race to protect their client and stop the serial killer "the Eye" from killing again! I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish and can't wait to find out hopefully in a future book, more about the elusive "Archer"!
I did receive an advance read copy of this book to review, but the opinions stated above are my own.
I received an advanced copy of A Killer in Texas from Jessica Patch. I have read all of her books. She is a great author. Libby and Axel are bodyguards who provide protection for Harley, who is actually a person of interest in the murders. The Eye, as the killer is known by, has murdered several women. Several times, I thought I knew who the serial killer was in the story. Jessica’s books make you want to keep reading to see who is guilty. It’s hard to stop reading because you get pulled in to her storyline. I am always waiting for her next book to be published. All while Libby is working with Axel, she tries to keep him safe by pushing him away from her. She thought her plan was best for both of them. It is the same with some of us. We think we know best and don’t trust our plans to God. He always knows best though. We need to trust Him even when it seems hard. Jessica always has a message about our faith in God in her books. This book will be available next Tuesday. Make sure you get a copy of it. I look forward to reading your review.
One word, Unpredictable! I have been waiting on this book since the first one in the series came out, and it did not disappoint. Well worth the wait. I was so excited to begin this book, especially since one of the characters has the same name as one of my sons. This story is about Axel Spears and his partner, Libby Winters who has been given the task of protecting a suspect in the murder of several women. The suspect has been getting death threats and even attempted murder. At the same time, Libby is being stalked by The Eye as they are calling the murderer. Will they be able to protect their client while protecting Libby and trying to solve the case? This book will have you suspecting everyone and will leave you with your mouth hanging open. What a well-written book! I can't wait for the next one in the series. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, but was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts on the book are my own take away from reading it.
Jessica Patch always delivers an amazing read. This book is fast paced and full of action. The best part of this book as that there are two different suspense lines running through it. You have Axel and Libby guarding Harley and The Eye chasing after Libby at the same time. This made this a unique read for me and that really stands out that this author can keep both balls in the air at the same time and do it well.
I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The Eye is a ruthless killer and every time he came after Libby I could feel the anxiety and adrenaline like any woman who is being hunted. That is a sign of a really good suspense writer when they can evoke that strong of an emotion from the reader.
I loved the plot and the way that the author weaves the story together through twists and turns. She always manages to come up with unexpected endings and twists that surprise even an avid suspense reader. I look forward to her next story.
Axel Spears and Libby Winters are not the typical "friends-to-more." They're not even the typical "co-workers to more." They are best friends/co-workers/plus-ones with horribly tragic backstories of lost love, and they both have decided/insisted/resolved that neither one of them is ever, ever going to fall in love again! They are also both so stubborn that the reader's eyes will roll more than once during each helping of Axel and Libby arguing about who's in more danger--him, her, or the client they are supposed to be protecting. I love Jessica R. Patch's books--artful characters, creepy settings, and diabolical twists. And always there are cameos of characters from previous books, so fans can catch up on their favorites.
Be prepared to be swept away from your everyday life and immersed in a fight to stay one step ahead of a serial killer! Libby and Axel is suppose to keep a client safe but it quickly escalates to keeping Libby safe. Will they be able to resist the past and focus on the future to keep each other safe? Will they discover the identity of the serial killer? Will Axel be able to keep Libby out of the killer's hands? More importantly will they allow God to show them the future He has in store for them? Action-packed, drama, suspense, quick wit, faith filled possible romance to keep you spellbound!
