this could have gone a number of ways..
a high school girl Ruri wakes up one morning to find she has horns growing out of her head.
Mum has been hiding something!
Ruri seems to take this mostly in her stride...classmates want to touch her horns...and she copes with it in a dry sarcasm.
whether moving forward it's going on to bigger issues or dealing with Ruri's transformation...we will have to wait and see.

I love the vibe of this series, everyone so chill and nice. I love Ruri's mom so much, she so supportive and gentle. This probably the first time I saw a mom character playing game with her kid, it's just so sweet.

The artwork is solid. And it’s kind of an interesting premise where a girl finds out that her absent father is a Ryu. Which I pretty sure is a Japanese dragon though I’m not 100% sure about that and the Things that happened to her like growing horns and breathing fire and at the end of this volume learning she’s got electricity abilities the main character is OK and how she has walls but once they come down she becomes kind of a social butterfly though I don’t know the story for me just kind of fell a little flat I think this definitely works more if you’re a younger audience I think the fact that I’m older probably didn’t help I would say if you have kids in high school the property like this a lot better.

Une jeune lycéenne découvre du jour au lendemain qu’elle est à moitié dragon ! Lorsqu’elle se réveille avec des cornes, sa mère lui avoue qui est son père. Cet événement chamboule son quotidien mais va aussi lui permettre de s’ouvrir à ses camarades de classe. J’ai trouvé ce premier tome très sympa !!

Sejak pertama kali bersua dengan komik ini di awal tahun 2021 lalu—saat masih berbentuk one-shot—aku sudah melihat kalau manga ini akan potensial sekali, bahkan rasanya sayang sekali kalau dari pihak Shueisha nggak menjadikannya manga mingguan (series). Dan BUM! Setahun setengah kemudian manga ini resmi mengudara di Weekly Shounen Jump (WSJ). Pada saat itu rasanya bahagia sekali karena salah satu manga yang membuatku perlahan move on dari rasa sakit hatiku karena 'dikapaknya' manga ACT-AGE bisa terbit secara berkala setiap minggunya.

Namun, semua nggak berlangsung lama. Setelah menerbitkan 7 chapter, author manga ini memutuskan hiatus karena masalah kesehatan. Saat itu pikir hanya sebentar, tapi ternyata hiatus ini memakan waktu kurang lebih dua tahun lamanya hahaha. Aku sampai berpikiran kalau manga ini mungkin tidak akan dilanjutkan lagi karena hiatus yang terlalu lama (walaupun aku juga meyakini manga ini kemungkinan akan dipindahkan dari WSJ ke platform digital Shonen Jump yang sedang naik daun waktu itu, Shonenjump+).

Dan yah, setelah berlalu dua tahun lamanya dan akhirnya si Ruri melanjutkan manganya. Akhirnyaaaaaa, penantian panjangku terbayarkan dengan memiliki 1 Volume manganya yang baru terbit belakangan. Masih terasa jelas betapa senangnya ketika aku menemukan komik fisik manga ini di rak buku Gramedia. Setelah hampir 5 tahun lamanya, dengan debut one-shot yang mantap, lalu debut WSJ yang ciamik, hiatus panjang, volume pertama yang sangat bagus sebagai manga pendatang dan akhirnya kembali lagi dan merilis banyak chapter dan volume manga. Komik fisik Ruri si Naga Volume 1 ada di tanganku dan bisa kupegang 😭 (agak sedikit kecewa karena edisi Indonesianya tidak menggunakan judul "Ruri si Naga", tapi tak apalah, setidaknya aku bisa berbahagia kalau manga ini harus akan tetap aman dari 'kapak'). Jujur aku bersyukur masih diberi umur, kesehatan dan rezeki hingga di tahap ini hahaha—aku harap ini terus berlanjut sampai ONE PIECE tamat dan seterusnya—hingga ajal mendekap.

Ruri Dragon singkat sebenarnya menceritakan kisah Ruri, seorang siswi SMA yang suatu hari tumbuh tanduk di kepalanya, dan dari sana diketahui kalau ternyata Ruri ternyata merupakan anak dari seorang naga. Di sinilah kisah Ruri si Naga dimulai, mengisahkan dinamika keseharian Ruri untuk menjalani hidup yang tenang dan santai sebagai seorang manusia setengah naga.

Premisnya simpel, sederhana, tetapi dapat diolah dengan ciamik oleh Masaoki Shindo menjadi sebuah kisah slice of life yang menarik. Selain art-nya yang cute dan gokil abis, pesan yang dibawakan oleh ceritanya juga sangat bagus, seperti bagaimana kita bisa tetap hidup menjadi diri sendiri walaupun kita berbeda dari orang lain, bagaimana kita bisa menghargai perbedaan yang ada dan bagaimana cara kita untuk pribadi yang lebih terbuka dan bisa memahami orang yang ada di sekitar kita. Sebenarnya masih banyak lagi pesan yang bisa didapatkan manga ini, tapi karena ini hanyalah volume satu. Sepertinya aku putuskan nanti sahaja sampai setidaknya volume keduanya rilis di Indonesia.

I'm so happy this title is getting published and that the mangaka is back from their hiatus.

I read the first few chapters maybe a year ago on the Shonen/Viz app and was instantly hooked. It's not everyday a kid wakes up with horns on their head and their mom is very nonchalant about it. I'm really excited to read more and to see where this story goes.

Hoping the mangaka remains in good health as well!

It's tough being a teen dragon-girl. Not that Ruri Aoki should know this, but sometimes, oftentimes, life gets weird. And for Ruri, waking up one morning with a pair of super-sharp horns jutting from her forehead definitely qualifies as weird — "What the heck?"

RURIDRAGON v1 is a delightful, coming-of-age book whose main character appears more sloth-like than dragon: lazing around the house playing videogames, always late to school, mumbling in conversation with adults. Ruri is a teenager, and her social awkwardness and general reluctance to put herself out into the world are quite natural. The only difference, of course, is that she wakes up with horns on her dome and learns from her mother that her deadbeat father is actually a dragon.

Warm, rounded, and comical character designs, combined with exquisitely indifferent and unpretentious character personalities, make RURIDRAGON v1 a very easy and comfortable read. Ruri's best friend, Yuka, is a chatty and empathetic girl constantly on the lookout for good soda. Ruri's mother appears scatterbrained but only to hide her comically high permissiveness of her daughter's ever-present teenage angst (i.e., the mother is the only character drawn with black-bead eyes). Ruri's homeroom teacher, who initially comes across as buttoned-up and academic, has a wonderfully dry sense of humor (e.g., "Breathing a little fire is nothing to make a fuss about.").

In narrative terms, the manga keeps close to Ruri and her mother, and together, the two learn about what it means to be a person of two species, navigating puberty. Ruri doesn't understand any of this stuff. Her dad is a dragon? She has latent abilities? And knowing this, will her classmates think of her as some terrible monster? The girl's readymade uncertainty blossoms in no time, but thanks to a few close friends and a conspicuously reliable mother, Ruri might just make it. Now, if only she could get a handle on that whole sneezing-and-accidentally-setting-people-on-fire thing. That, too.

The pure and sentimental nature of a girl trying to find herself amid the ridiculous challenge of learning she's a dragon nestles this manga between the rudiments of a slice-of-life comedy and a more fantastical personal drama. For example, Yuka, Ruri's friend, does her best to defend the dragon-girl and tag teams with other classmates to hype her up. Only, Yuka's kindness works a little too well, and she very quickly gets jealous of her shy friend's sudden rise in popularity. The manga's blunt humor and unproblematic view of difference, diversity, and growing up resonate in every character (e.g., Ruri's grandma: "Those're some swell horns there. If anyone gives you trouble, make sure you skewer 'em clean through.").

RURIDRAGON v1 is a fun manga because it keeps things simple: girl learns she's part-dragon, but goes to school anyway. That's it. The horns, the fire-breathing, and the chit-chat about family lineage are built into the story, sure, but those things matter far less than whether Ruri can tolerate all of her classmates gawking at the new popular kid.

It’s a story that I have been reading since it first debuted on Shueisha’s Manga Plus App, Masaoki Shindo’s RuriDragon. RuriDragon is a fantasy slice-of-life story that has caught the attention of many since its debut two years ago, ranking at number one in Japan’s “Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics of 2023” survey, The series ranked ninth in the 2024 edition of Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! List of best manga for male readers.

Our story begins like any normal tale, a young teenage girl prepares for another day of school, ready for what life will throw at her. But she didn’t expect to wake up with horns! The girl’s mother told her daughter that Ruri inherited her draconic traits from her father, who, yes, is a dragon. Ruri’s life will be turned upside down as she deals with curious classmates and her newly discovered Dragon Genes, which are starting to turn up the heat!

It’s a coming-of-age story that flips the script on its predecessors and adds a mix of fantasy, comedy, and absurdity to bring readers a positive depiction of having a mixed heritage (but using dragons). One of the strange things about the story is how unconcerned the adults are about Ruri’s Draconic Heritage and newfound abilities, which makes me wonder if there is more to her world than we believe, from what I can tell, we’re learning more about it through the eyes of Ruri.

The characters in this story are odd, but in a good way, for example, Ruri’s mother is surprisingly calm and undeterred by her daughter’s newfound abilities which catches Ruri off guard in a comedic way. Speaking of her abilities, she learns right away that she can breathe fire from her sneezing (though, with her being half-human, her body hasn’t gotten used to these new abilities yet.) As for her classmates, they aren’t immediately frightened at the thought of a classmate having horns or being a dragon but treat Ruri as one of their own. Aside from the positive depiction of being mixed heritage, this story also serves as a way of going through puberty, so to speak.

Aside from Shindo’s unique story and script work, his artwork was something else to admire from this wholesome experience, each of her classmates was designed uniquely, and each had different personalities of their own on display not by words, but through representation. With how each chapter tackles certain situations that she faces whether it be school, making friends, mastering her new draconic abilities, and her newfound draconic nature, it is drawn and handled with great detail and smooth linework. Not to mention packed with little nods and easter eggs in certain scenes.

RuriDragon démarre de manière très inattendue. Pas de prophétie ni de grande aventure : Ruri Aoki, une lycéenne tout ce qu’il y a de plus ordinaire, se réveille un matin avec des cornes sur la tête. Un détail fantastique qui vient perturber un quotidien pourtant banal.
L’histoire se concentre avant tout sur le ressenti de Ruri. Comment continuer à vivre normalement quand on change sans l’avoir choisi ? Comment affronter le regard des autres, leurs questions, leurs maladresses, parfois leur bienveillance ? Le manga aborde ces thèmes avec beaucoup de douceur et de justesse.
Le cadre scolaire prend une place importante. Ruri tente tant bien que mal de trouver l’équilibre entre rester discrète et accepter cette nouvelle part d’elle-même. Elle doute, se sent perdue, avance à petits pas. Les relations avec sa mère, ses camarades et ses enseignants évoluent naturellement, à travers de petites scènes du quotidien qui rendent le récit très humain et touchant.
Le fantastique sert ici de métaphore de l’adolescence et de la différence. Le corps change, on ne se reconnaît plus toujours, et l’on cherche sa place dans un monde qui aime les cases bien définies. Ruri n’est pas une héroïne destinée à sauver qui que ce soit : elle essaie simplement de s’accepter telle qu’elle est.
Les dessins sont simples mais expressifs, et les décors réalistes, notamment ceux de la vie scolaire et urbaine, renforcent cette impression de tranche de vie douce et sincère.
Avec ce premier tome, RuriDragon propose une lecture originale, sensible et apaisante, qui parle d’identité et d’acceptation de soi sans jamais tomber dans le pathos. Une très belle découverte qui donne envie de suivre Ruri dans la suite de son parcours 🐉📚

This is such a fresh manga. And not necessarily due to the concept, but I'd argue due to the execution.
I mean, when I first heard about a teen girl suddenly getting horns and supernatural abilities, I was expecting either something superhero-like going on, something inspired from historical folklore, or something romantic and lewd, as the generous internet always provides. But NO! This manga genuinely explores the social complexity, potential for a community and all the other doors opened after everyone around Ruri finds out how spectacular she is both inside and outside.

And this might sound crazy. But even though people's reactions here are mostly excitement and wholesomeness, I wouldn't put it past the kids nowadays placed in similar situations to act chill like that. Maybe toned down a little, but after witnessing some things, a girl can hope.

The artstyle is nice, though not so unique and consistent (some characters tend to look similar in some panels). But it fits the overall vibe. I'm curious how papa dragon actually looks like and if we're getting more half-half people soon. Though I have some suspicions about the teacher and that Kaneo who's still missing ඞඞඞ (≖_≖ )

Ruri, you have my undivided attention. Can't wait to see where it all leads to (づ｡◕‿‿◕｡)づ

RuriDragon, Vol. 1 is a coming-of-age manga that throws an interesting spin onto female adolescence.

Aoki wakes up with horns growing out of her head. Her mother nonchalantly mentions that Aoki’s father is a Ryu, or Japanese water dragon, so that explains it. Her girlfriends can’t stop groping them. The boys in her class appear to ogle them. The horns seem like a not-very-subtle metaphor for adolescent breast development. Then comes the fire-breathing that causes a bloody mouth that is embarrassing to Aoki. Can anyone not see the female adolescent analogy in that?

Eventually, Aoki works through her feelings about being a half dragon. Next, we are hit over the head with multiple chapters of a don’t judge people by their differences, particularly their looks, parable. Aoki is both judged for being different and judges others based on their voluntary grooming choices. And that is BAAD!

I wanted more jokes, high school hijinks and maybe even some romance than I got from this manga. Hopefully, future volumes will move past character introductions and blatant moralizing. This particular manga, RuriDragon, Vol. 1, is best for preteens rather than adults. 3 stars.

Really funny high school manga. Ruri Aiko, 15, wakes up with dragon horns. She doesn’t freak out, and neither does her mother, because apparently this was to be expected. Turns out, Ruri’s absent father is dragon. Mother just hasn’t thought to bring it up.

Off to school it is. Everyone is curious and oddly calm, until Ruri breathes fire. After sulking at home a couple of days, learning how to control the fire, it’s back to school again. People are curious, but not hostile, and Ruri’s biggest problem is falling behind in her studies. She’s not the most sociable person, but luckily her classmates won’t let her deal with it alone. She even makes new friends.

Just as she thinks school might not be so bad after all, a new dragon trait emerges. The volume ends there.

This was funny in a very laconic way. Ruri doesn’t get worked up about anything, and neither does her mother—except with the dragon father, who isn’t very helpful with his advice about their daughter. (BTW, father appears to be a real dragon with a dragon form, and I have questions.) Suitable for middle-grade and up.

Ruri wakes up one day with horns – surprise, she’s a dragon! Or a half-dragon, rather. She goes to school, where there are some boundary issues when everyone wants to touch her horns. When a sneeze turns into fire-breathing and a scalded, bleeding throat, Ruri isn’t so sure she wants to ever return to school. But with her supportive mom working magic (not literally) behind the scenes, Ruri’s classmates are open to Ruri’s differences and more inquisitive than judgemental

While Ruri (perhaps rightfully) thinks everyone is staring at her, she overcomes a bit of her social hesitancy and begins making friends outside of her circle (which pretty much is only Yuki, at least that we see on the page). When Ruri relents to letting Kashiro (with the colorful pigtails) tutor her in math, Ruri learns a lesson about holding judgement and about working to slowly dismantle her inner walls.

Volume 1 ends with Ruri realizing that another dragon trait is emerging: electro-static discharge.

It was really quite cute, and moved at a cozy pace. So far it’s a clean read; would be suitable for middle school audiences.

Me animé a leer este manga porque Kyoto Animation lo va a adaptar, y si hay algo que me encanta de ese estudio es su capacidad para llevar el humor al límite. Justo hace poco vi City The Animation y había olvidado lo maravillosa que puede ser esa forma de humor absurdo japonés, que no se basa en el fanservice, sino en situaciones sin sentido que van escalando poco a poco.

La premisa de este manga es muy simple; Ruri, en plena pubertad, despierta sus poderes de dragona. Su primera manifestación son unos cuernos, y a partir de ahí van apareciendo otras características. Más allá de lo fantástico, lo que más me gustó fue cómo se trabajan las interacciones con las demás personas y la forma de enfrentar una etapa tan compleja como la adolescencia. En ese sentido, las conversaciones entre Ruri y su mamá son todo lo que está bien, puras banderitas verdes, una relación llena de apoyo, cuidado y comprensión.

Entiendo que no es un manga para todas y todos, porque hay que entrar en el mood de simplemente pasar el tiempo con una chica dragona. Pero si lo haces, te das cuenta de que la vida sigue siendo bastante normal, solo que ahora tienes la oportunidad de conocer a una amiga gentil, amable y muy entrañable.

Read this one about a week ago. It was cute. A little predictable at times, and a little strange at times as well.

I couldn't shake the constant thought of "hmm mother is human, dad is a dragon.... wait how did that work" and kept telling myself, "shut up it's fiction don't over think it" to get through the book.

I definitely liked Ruri as a character, and plan to read more of it because she was interesting. The only problem I had (why I gave it 3 stars) was it went through an entire book and I don't quite get what the "problem" or storyline is other than "I'm a dragon, now what?". It would be more solid if the mother character wasn't so vague or just saying "oh, uh yeah I forgot about that". It makes it feel like the Author is the mother, and is saying "oh I forgot to mention that {xyz} is this" as a way of telling us even they forgot. I hope not, because like i said Ruri was likable as a character.

We'll see when the next volume is available at my library maybe I'll check it out.

Ruri Dragon was an unlikely school slice-of-life manga title that ran together with other mostly battle manga in a shonen magazine. From the get-go, it stood out from those other shonen titles.

Incidentally, that was just like the premise of the manga, a lone dragon girl that found herself alone and apart from her human classmates. The lone dragon girl who must quickly figure out what other gifts her draconic heritage brought her, along with the two horns that adorned her head.

In its first run on the Manga Plus app, I, along with numerous other readers, enjoyed this series because it was just so different from Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, or Chainsawman. Then it disappeared for a while.

The title entered a lengthy hiatus. Though the absence made its readers' hearts fonder, it was not the case for this reader. My tastes for manga changed in the interregnum. It didn't hit the same for me anymore.

One morning, Ruri wakes up with horns. She asks her mom about them. Mom casually drops that Ruri's (absent) father is a dragon, thus she's a half-dragon. Mom leaves. Ruri goes to school. Everyone is kinda confused, but no one really reacts. Until Ruri sneezes a fireball in the middle of class.

But even after this, and spitting up blood, Ruri spends a day or so healing, then a couple more figuring out how to control her fire breath and then goes back to school. Now it's just a matter of time before more dragon traits manifest, but Ruri's going to try to have a normal high school life anyway.

Personally, I'm most curious how Ruri's mom pulled off every bard's dream of seducing a dragon. I'm also really confused how no one seems to be even mildly concerned about a "normal" girl suddenly manifesting dragon traits despite everyone seeming to think that dragons don't exist. It's... really laid back... and I'm not sure how I feel about that. But it was a nice read so, bring on volume 2.

Another short manga recommended by my daughter, who has been picking manga that she thinks I would enjoy, something we can share.

This is a coming of age story, with a bit of a twist. Ruri is just a typical teenager, who one day wakes up with two horns sticking out of her head. Oh yeah, her mom forgot to mention that her (missing) dad is actually a dragon, so Ruri is half-dragon.... as if high school wasn't hard enough already!

The rest of the book is really about how Ruri deals with her situation, specifically unique to her but really about how each of us is different, how we are all trying to fit in. It is funny how in these manga people just sort of accept weird situations and move on with life: "oh, you're a half dragon? Cool, let's go to Starbucks!".

Should be a funny series.

Think I must have read the one-shot for this or a few chapters before. Was happy to see it on the library shelf.

I really like the art—especially Ruri’s sneezing, fire-breathing expression! The way Shindo Masaoki draws Ruri’s mouth is very charming.

And I love how laidback all the characters are. The mom, teacher, and the friends. Peaceful and the plot keeps moving. Good mix.

That peaceful, introspective feeling as well as the mild banter back and forth about sometimes serious things puts me in mind a little bit of 違国日記 (Ikoku Nikki). I loved that series to bits, so was really disappointed when I heard it was ending so abruptly… (was that in 2023 already? Wild how time flies…)

Maybe I should take this chance to brave finishing reading it… 😢 bwaaah…

Voilà que débute la quête du dragon !

Un beau matin Ruri se réveille et découvre des cornes sur le sommet de son crâne. Dans la même journée sa mère lui annonce que son père est, en fait, un dragon.

Là débute les mésaventures d'une lycéenne introvertie par nature et allergique aux interactions sociales.

Découvrez Ruri, la fille d'un dragon :
1) Elle a des cornes.
2) Elle crache des flammes.
3) Elle manie l'électricité

C'était pas mal du tout, j'ai assez envie de lire la suite pour découvrir ce que cette jeune fille a comme autres capacités. Comme je l'ai dit durant ma lecture, c'est plutôt rigolo. On passe un bon moment pendant la lecture, je recommanderais carrément pour l'été (pour celleux qui cherchent des lectures pas prise de tête).

This was such a cute manga!! Ruri wakes up one morning shocked to see horns growing out of her head, and her mom drops a bombshell - she's half dragon! Her classmates are much more curious and excited about the horns than she is, and its nice to see none of them being cruel to her for this random thing. They're all so accepting of it it must be commonplace for humans and other species to have kids, but it's never explained how common or how it's done; I really need that explanation in coming volumes because UMMMM Wat lol 😅 The art was fun and funny, and I'm really excited for the next volume and to see where this series goes!

Primer tomo de una serie curiosa, ligera y muy divertida. 🐉✨ Ruridragon nos presenta a Ruri, una chica aparentemente normal que, de la noche a la mañana, descubre que es medio humana... y medio dragón. Sí, su padre era un dragón, y a partir de ahí todo cambia.

Lo más interesante es cómo lo cotidiano se mezcla con lo fantástico: las reacciones de sus compañeros, la naturalidad con la que su madre acepta la situación y los pequeños momentos de adaptación que hacen que esta historia se sienta muy cercana, a pesar de su premisa mágica.

Un tomo encantador, con mucho potencial, y a un precio regalado. Si buscáis algo fresco y simpático, no lo dejéis pasar. 📖💫
