dnf I don't even know when because I fell asleep twice during this audiobook.. but probably around 40 45%??

the first 30% was actually SO GOOD! like I was invested and stressed, but then a threesome happened... and I began to lose interest.

Call me crazy, but if you are a stalker vamp who is so in love and obsessed with his succubus gf, the idea of touching another woman should not be present. I was already on the fence about their romance because it was all too lusty, but this just made me lose hope and interest in their actual love. It had so much potential truly, but some choices were made that just irked me.

I can see why so many people loved this book, and the first 30% was actually better than the entirety of book 1. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

DNF @ ~45%

This book literally made me rediscover my free will 😭 like wait… I don’t actually HAVE to suffer through this awful book?? Revolutionary 🥹
By 30% we were just reliving the same thing over and over and over for another full chunk of the book I genuinely thought I was going to lose my mind.
Xer was just suffering nonstop and I was expected to keep reading it on repeat?? I’m sorry I can’t do that. And the others being borderline useless💀
I was falling asleep standing up this was NOT good at all.
And when they finally rescued her they immediately went straight to hunching??? Hello?? Can y’all process a SINGLE emotion first please.
And Kai and Syd acting weird??? EW. Please stop. It is OKAY for characters to be platonic. That was literally my favorite part of this otherwise unbearable book.
Anyway I would never ever pick this up again. Not even if you paid me.

This isn’t a 5 star read this is an ♾️ star read …

I had the absolute honor and privilege of beta reading this book months ago, and ever since then I’ve been impatiently waiting for the day the world could finally experience this masterpiece and fall in love with it the way I did. Now I’m revisiting the story through the audiobook, and somehow it managed to get even better. If I could climb to the highest rooftop and scream about this duet until every single person listened to me, I would. That’s how much I love it.

This book has two of the best main characters you will ever meet. Xera is a force. She’s deeply damaged but fighting so hard to put herself back together, and the way the people who love her show up and remind her that she’s worthy of everything, is my kind of love. Xera is a character I will feel in my soul forever. She’s powerful, unstoppable, and heartbreakingly vulnerable all at once. Her journey in this book wrecked me, and her development is honestly some of the best I’ve ever read. I was literally choking on my tears at points, this book will destroy you, but it will also put you back together piece by piece. DONT SAY I DIDNT WARN YOU

*I quite literally sent the author a Video of me choking on my tears*

And then there’s Kai. Don’t even get me started, because I could write fifteen pages about how much I love this vampire. The validation, the devotion, the absolute feral dedication he shows to Xera he is the true definition of “burn the world down for her.” There is no line he won’t cross, and I loved watching him cross them all. Kai and Xera are the ultimate dynamic duo. And their chemistry is literally out of this world. Every single spicy scene had me barking like a dog, and it hit even better in my ear holes.🎧🥵

This duet as a whole pulled so much emotion out of me, especially with its messaging about what it feels like to be a woman. The plot is phenomenal, and ML Burns expands on the world beautifully in the second book. You can feel that there are so many layers waiting to be explored, and the side characters are some of the BEST and I know we’re in for some incredible spin-off stories in the future 🤭🤭 I’m already fucking stoked for what’s coming next👀

Since I reread this on audio, I have to shout out James and Savannah, the narrators. I could not imagine two better voices to bring this story to life. Savannah IS Xera her performance had chills running down my spine. And James? His rumble of a voice left me in a puddle on the floor. The two of them together delivered an unforgettable experience. If you love duet narration, this audiobook is a must.

When I say I want a dark fantasy romance, this is wtf I mean the, vibes are unmatched.

If you’re not convinced to read this by now, I honestly don’t know what else to say. These books have become a piece of me, part of my soul for eternity. 🖤

Im not ready to say goodbye 😭😭

CHECK YOUR TW!! this is not for the faint of heart.

When M.L. Burns decides to tell a story, she doesn’t just write it - she drags you into it, locks the door, and makes you live there.

All Your Deadly Truths takes everything from Part 1 and cranks it up - darker, sharper, more intense (can't forget more shadows hehe)- while still giving you the kind of emotional gut-punches that make you sit there in silence after a chapter, just staring. Every thread from the first book weaves into this one, and by the end it’s a hell yes.

Getting Kai’s POV? I didn’t know how much I needed it until I was in it. Nobody writes a morally black (obsessed) MMC like Mel does. He’s the obsessive, burn-it-all-down type of man that ruins you for anyone else.

Xeraphine? She’s it. Power, grit, beauty, and the kind of resilience that makes you want to stand and slow clap. Her bond with Kai and Sydni is everything - a found family so fierce... just love. And speaking of Sydni… there are some twists with her that had me grinning like an idiot.

The tension and twists in this story is relentless - in the plot, in the romance, in the “holy hell, is this actually happening?” moments. The world expands, the stakes are sky-high, and the spice? Whew. There’s one scene I thought might be a tease but no… it happened, and it was pure chaos in the best way.

The last stretch of the book is edge-of-your-seat, heart-in-your-throat storytelling. I trusted Mel to stick the landing, and she did. The epilogues are the kind of gift you didn’t even know to ask for -cinematic, satisfying, and a little cruel because now I just want to start the duet over again. (and plan to when the audio for book 2 comes out oops)

Obsessive love, unapologetically dark characters, vengeance, family ties, and a level of emotional damage I’ll thank her for later.

I'M SO EXCITED THE IT'S NOW THE FILTHY UNIVERSE, lets freaking goooooo.

SOMEONE HOLD MY HAND WHILE I WRITE THIS REVIEW PLEASE

omg besties if you haven’t read this duet yet … wtf are you doing ??! get tf up and grab your kindle, (absolutely grab that battery operated boyfriend too)

this is book two to the filthy duet, you must read book one before continuing !!

PLEASE CHECK YOUR TRIGGER WARNINGS 🖤

my god am i on my damn knees for these characters 🧎🏻‍♀️ with everything they’ve been through … i’m beyond happy to see their ending and how they fought for themselves and each other. this wasn’t just another book to finish the story / plot. lol no. this was a MASTERPIECE 🙌🏼 i can’t get over all the emotions this one ripped out of me. i’ll never get over the amount of love i have for these characters. they will forever stick with me and i’ll cherish them with everything i got ❤️‍🩹

xera my beautiful succubus 🥹 she is such a force to be reckoned with. her strength and that fight in her never wavered. even when she was at her lowest, she still had a spark of fight in her. she is a survivor through and through. the power she holds could actually destroy the whole world with just one breath. she’s absolutely unstoppable and unbreakable. and she’s not alone. there are so many people at her side and searching for her. especially kai and syd 😩 these characters are quite actually some of the best ever. the love that they have for one another is unmatched !! don’t even get me started on how kai loves. this vampire is literally one of my favorites 😍 he is the true prime example of “fuck around and find out” !! this man literally burned the world down for his woman and he did everything he could. he didn’t care if it hurt others. his only focus was xera and that was it 🤭 their chemistry was one i just couldn’t stop reading about. it was explosive and addicting 🤩

WHEN I TELL YOU THE SPICE BE SPICING !!!???
i swear i think i broke my b.o.b 😭😇🌹
don’t say i didn’t warn you omg !! every single scene i was panting and drooling like a damn dog 🫠

i’m never getting over this duet and the characters within 🖤 extremely excited for what’s to come because i know mel has got something up her sleeve 🤭

5 stars!!! A MUST READ!!!

⚠️ Trigger Warning: This book is dark, intense, and not for the faint of heart.

M.L. Burns doesn’t just tell a story—she drags you into it, slams the door behind you, and makes you live inside every shadow and spark of chaos. All Your Deadly Truths takes everything from the first book and escalates it—darker, sharper, more twisted, and infinitely more intoxicating.

Kai is the kind of morally black, obsessive hero you’ll never forget. Devoted to destruction, obsessed to obsession, he’s the kind of man that ruins every other book boyfriend for good. And Xera? She is fierce, relentless, and iconic. Every trial, every betrayal, every heartbreak only sharpens her power and resolve. Their love isn’t just romantic—it’s consuming, all-encompassing, and eternal.

The pacing, twists, and emotional intensity are relentless. Every chapter had me second-guessing, gasping, and occasionally yelling at the book. The romance scorches, the suspense grips, and the spice… oh, the spice sets the page on fire. Sydni and the found-family dynamic only add depth and moments of heartfelt brilliance amid the darkness.

The climax and epilogues are perfection: cinematic, satisfying, and just cruel enough to make you want to start the duet over immediately. M.L. Burns delivers an experience that will stay with you long after the last page, balancing obsession, vengeance, loyalty, and heartbreak in a way that few authors can.

If you’re looking for unapologetically dark romance with morally complex characters, gut-punch emotions, and a story that consumes you, this duet is everything. Welcome to the Filthy Universe—once you enter, you’ll never want to leave. 🖤

Wow! I loved book 1 but book 2 was even better. The whole crew is back and a few more. You must read book 1 first and probably should do a quick reread. It picks up where it left off and jumps right into all of it. I dont want to give spoilers but everyone in this book including Kai and Xera get exactly what they deserve. I swear towards the end I was in tears and then minutes later laughing. This book will put you through all the feelings. Must read for everyone! ♥️🖤♥️🖤♥️

Devastatingly Beautiful

(after sitting i needed to bump this rating up)

i’ve been thinking about what to say for days and i could honestly sit here for 30 minutes writing a review and not be able to express just how much kai and xeraphine altered my brain chemistry so instead i’ll just say a few things and start with recommending every dark romance lover read these books.

its rare that a dark romance book or duet for that matter keeps my attention the way this duet did, especially nowadays but i was so utterly wrapped into this world that i refused to read anything in between books. i quite literally stayed awake til 12am on release day for this book and read for at least three hours before i was content because ml created a world with such diverse and dimensional characters that i don’t think i’ll ever forget. i can’t wait for the next duet!

lastly i just need to touch on how well written xeraphine is. without giving away anything i think ml did an amazing job writing a woman who’s strong and evil in nature that doesn’t change but somehow evolves into an even stronger women who also wants love and craves to be more than who she was born to be. you wouldn’t think a succubus could be so relatable but i found so many pieces of myself in her so i’ll forever love, reread and cherish these books.

happy reading and TRIGGERS TRIGGERS TRIGGERS ⚠️

I loved the first book and was so excited to dive into this one, but holy hell I was not prepared for what I got.

Xera went through absolute hell in these pages. The suffering was relentless. Still, I kept pushing through because I wanted to see where her journey would lead, though it was already draining me.

Then Kai and Syd happened. From the start I already found their interactions annoying, but I never thought it would actually cross that line. This ruined the story for me.

I went through 100 emotions reading this book 😫

I thought the story in the first book was amazing, but this one completely wrecked me in the best way possible. If I could, I would inject this duo straight into my veins!

These characters… I can’t even explain how much I love them. They are honestly some of the BEST I’ve ever read. I loved every moment of their relationship - the pain, the fear, the heartbreak, and the desperate kind of love that makes you ache 🖤

Absolutely breathtaking world. Dark, dangerous, and seductive. It feels alive - like you’re stepping into the shadows and you can’t look away.

M.L. Burns has ruined me for other books (and I mean that in the best way). Nothing else is going to hit quite like this for a while and I’m thanking her on my hands and knees for that 🖤

This book had no plot it was just smut. This was nearly 500 pages of Xera, Kai and occasionally his shadows banging each other. Literally everywhere including while their lives were in danger. Also the threesome between Kai, Xera, and Sydni was so weird. It seemed so forced. For me, it ruined the relationship between the 3 of them which was the only good thing about this book

Holy Fk what in the beyond was in this book!! 🤩🔥 My notes at the end of finishing this said “That’s how you Fking finish a duet off in gods damn style!!!”
MEL👏🏼👏🏼 Thank-you 1000times over!🥰

This was my favourite read of the year so far.. hands down! The anticipation for the 2nd part to Xera & Kai’s story was insane & Mel really said “take this, choke on it & see if you can recover”🤣

This was an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish & I loved how it had me second guessing myself all the way through to the very end! The amount of times I shouted ‘STFU’ out loud whilst reading this was a testament to Mel’s incredible writing!🥹

I didn’t think it was possible to fall in love with our 2 main characters, more than I did after the first book but boy was I wrong! Kai is just ultimate book boyfriend material, I swear he can do no wrong… & those shadows of his 🤤
& Xera is just absolute top tier FMC .. she suffered, fought back, suffered more & fought back twice as strong.. iconic power & strength!
Their love, their eternity = everything!! 🖤

I feel I took longer than normal to finish this story because I just didn’t want their story to end!! Dragggged it out as best I could 🤣🤭 I’ll never stop recommending this duet & am obsessed with the fact there’s gonna be more books from this universe 😈🙌🏼✨

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU CHECK ALL THE TRIGGERS!! 💣

Words can’t even begin to describe how incredible this book was. From the very first page, I was absolutely hooked—and I mean completely. All Your Deadly Truths has everything: the story, the dedication, even the cover. Perfection all around.

Without giving away too much, let me just say: this book was an absolute rollercoaster. If you thought the first book was dark, trust me—you’re not ready for this one. Actually, no matter what you think, you’re still not ready. It’s emotional, heartbreaking, and heartwarming all at once. I laughed, I cried—a lot. And I mean, truly a lot.

The character development was phenomenal. You could already feel it building in the first book, but here? Next level. I adored it. Even the side characters had me intrigued—I genuinely want to know more about every single one of them. Not one felt boring or unnecessary.

And the spice? Let’s just say it was scorching. Kai has officially claimed the title of my all-time favorite shadow daddy.

To sum it up: All Your Deadly Truths will break your heart, consume your soul, and leave you crawling back, begging for more.

This book is a hot mess or a spicy disaster. They have sex and are in danger, copy. paste. repeat.
Plot wise it’s a total mess.

I loved book one with all my heart. This one was so unnecessary.

Maybe rushed?

ARC review

I have officially found my new favorite duet! WOW! what an emotional rollercoaster this second book was.
M.L. Burns, you outdid yourself with this finale! 👏

Kairhyse on a rescue mission? Absolutely ruthless 🥵 Mercy doesn’t even exist in his vocabulary.

This book hit harder than the first one (seriously, check the TWs).
The first 30% was rough, heartbreaking even, but Xeraphine’s strength through what she endured...at the hands of her own mother (yes, you read that right)...was nothing short of jaw-dropping.
She’s fierce, morally gray, revenge-driven, and a little demon I cannot help but worship. She has easily climbed into my Top 3 FMC's of all time 👌.

“Revenge is a bitch, and her name is Xeraphine.” 👑

And then there’s the romance. Xeraphine and Kairhyse are everything!! 😭🖤 Possessive, obsessive, devastatingly hot and somehow still tender in their broken, fiery way.

Holy hell, the spice in this book? Off the charts. I’ve only ever given one book 5🌶 before, but this one demands it!!!🔥🔥
Prepare yourself for Chapters 31 & 32..IT WAS HOT!! 🔥🥵
The “crawl to me” moment, and let’s not forget that ridiculously hot threesome, plus Kairhyse and his four shadow clones… say less, I was FERAL.

Kairhyse may be a stalking, possessive vampire, but in this book he absolutely soared. He worships Xeraphine, supports her healing and her vengeance, and would burn down not just the world but heaven and hell themselves for his Little Demon.

"I’ll burn the Beyond and the Vayl to nothing but a piece of barely remembered history! Fuck them all right to the Void where I’ll piss on their souls. You. Are. MINE!” - Kairhyse

If you’re craving a fierce, morally black FMC on a revenge mission, paired with a dangerously sexy, shadow-wielding vampire MMC who treats her like his religion—this duet is the obsession you’ve been waiting for!!

Sexy, brutal, and unforgettable! 👏🔥🔥

READ IT AND THANK ME LATER! xoxo

All Your Deadly Truths by M. L. Burns is the conclusion to The Filthy Duet. I will start by saying thank you to the amazing team M. L. Burns, BNA for allowing me to experience this ALC. I thought Book 1 was good, but Book 2 made me feral for Kai, Xera, and even Syd! I will not lie and say I didn't have high expectations for the story from Mel but this woman not only delivered and overdelivered, she exceeded everything! This is not a story for faint-hearted people, it is dark, it is powerful and it is brilliantly written. So please check your Trigger Warnings!!
I will have to apologize to the author for how many times I've yelled in her DMs and she was so there for me each and every time!
If you know me you know I don't get emotional over books, there are a very few that have gotten me there and this one is for sure one of them. Xera is such a force, a fighter, a survivor and a goddess of vengeance! In her vulnerable moments, it is so heartbreaking, so powerful. She will crack your soul and rebuild it in the most beautiful way, with the help of Kai. He for sure is one of the most favourite shadow daddies of all time! Vampire check, broody check, dominant check, possessive check, will burn the world, check, check, check. Multiplying shadow daddy ding, ding, ding. Obsessed, fascinated with a certain tail, puddle! I could go on and on about why I love his character so much! Them as a couple, starting with their chemistry, passion and devotion this has to be my favourite couple, the way one would burn the world got the other!
The plot is absolutely phenomenal, when you think you know what's coming next, so much will surprise you! She has woven this world in such a way that everything has a role, a meaning and won't disappoint!
Let's talk a bit about the audiobook because this was a full-body experience performed in duet by Savanah Thomas and James Cassidy, I can't imagine anyone better than them voicing this amazing amazing characters!
Savanah as Xera, gave me goosebumps, tears and chills down my spine, she has embedded that performance deep in my soul!
James as Kai, oh boy, James I say this in the most respectful way, Daddy James for the win, sorry Daddy Kai. Wow just wow, puddle of tears, pleasure and everything in between that is what this performance was!
The two of them together, are a force to be reckoned with! Their voices are in perfect chemistry and they have played very well together from the emotions to the narration and all the side characters!
I will have to “thank” Mel for giving me a book hangover! Now I can't get this book out of my mind, it's all I think about 24/7, all I wanna talk about about and dream about!
The Blue Nose Audio team are the MVP of this entire process! My mind is blown by how amazing this team is working on this brilliant story, from the script, to the voices, production, and edits, thank you for this masterpiece!
I hope you guys understand how important the production of an audiobook is and how much work goes into creating it, because BNA has clearly put all their effort and it shows!

P.S. There is an extended epilogue, and I just sooo excited for what’s coming next in this universe! And thank all gods coz I’m not ready to let it go!

“All I want is to be free. Free of the constant burden of fighting for the one basic right I was born with: to live. You, my mother, Belial—everyone is selfish with my body, my life.”

This book has killed my soul. 26% in and Xera was just being raped and suffering and I was like what exactly is the point of this book?

Book 1 was filled with flowery writing as filler, book 2 was filled with new characters, expansion of the universe, everyone and their grandmother wanting to own Xera's womb, I love you but I will not tell you until we are almost close to true death and violent sex all through.

I hope this is the correct way to link another person's review but Nessa largely covers the issues I had with the story here https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... .

There is the reference to I Spit on Your Grave as well as Beetlejuice in the story. I have never watched any of the I Spit on Your Graves's but a quick wiki read and you can see how this story matches some of the plot...ramped up to 10000000 on the violence.

There is also the incest in the story. It was like the rape we had in book 1, multiply it and add on all manner of disgust to it for this book. Like I definitely feel this was on me because I had said I wanted a break before book 2 but I tried reading other stories, they weren't keeping my interest and found myself diving into this story. Book 1 weighed me down but book 2 just suffocated any hopes I had about Xera. Each time the group was in a safe cocoon, I was just holding my breath waiting, bracing for Tali and her gang to show up.

I hated Mister's purrs being written in. This was something I forgot to add in my review of Book 1 but now for Book 2 it grated on my nerves, like irritated me to the max. Sydni being relegated to their juvenile/surrogate child/woiye woiye she's so cute and we absolutely bubblegum love her role irritated me more. Then they .

The trope of miscommunication/lack of communication shows itself here in the form of Xera not telling Kai things until last minute or until she gets a painful fuck. It got boring real fast.

Why couldn't Tali

Why was Sunni introduced and given backstory? Or is this another character that is being set up for the book's universe?

As I said before, none of the perpetrators actually get proper punishment for all they did to Xera, with swift deaths. But even

Kai seemed to be the only character with emotional depth in the story. Sydni and Mister were more of surface level comfort buddies.

Anyway, I honestly didn't like this book because it was over the top and not in a good way. It was one additional irritant away from being a 2 star book. I wasn't a fan of the introduction of new characters or modification of some characters story lines to serve the purpose of expanding the series, in book 2. Wasn't a fan of the rape, the violent sex with Kai (like all the time) or the generational incest. I wanted to get to the end of Xera's story, but this feels like the end, for now, but even if the author came out with another story in the series (like Sydni+Brice or Kayn+Luce) I couldn't be bothered.

I am off to watch a good comfort show.

ALC Non-Spoiler Review 🎧
All Your Deadly Truths is book two and the conclusion to the Filthy duet. Everything comes out… literally. We finally learn the truth we were searching for and trust me, it’s not for the faint of heart. I personally do not have triggers, but in this book, there were parts where I needed a moment to digest what was actually happening. It was brutal and heavy, but in the land of story telling, and in a twisted kind of way, it had to happen.

The narration by the actors was more than incredible. Narrated in duet; Savannah Thomas and James Cassidy were stunning and absolutely brilliant in their performances. The banter and charisma were on-point and I lost count on how many times I giggled at the underhanded comments. Mister is still my favorite character, even more so knowing his loyalty to Xera.

Check those triggers and then hang on. This book is a dark, intense journey into a paranormal world of more than just demons and vampires.

(4.5) the feminine rage in this series is everythingggg! Xera has never had it easy thanks to her sick bitch of a mother Tali. She never felt comfortable loving anyone or admitting to loving them. But Kai was the only person she would think of while being tortured and caged under water. She would come back to life only to drown to death over and over again thinking of Kai. Thankfully Sinnix helped Xera and reunited her with Kai and Sydni. However, their reunion won’t last long because they still had Lars and Tali to deal with.
Not gonna lie I was so nervous about the deals Xera made. She will do anything to keep her loved ones from being harmed and it came with a crazy price. Kai and Xera fought hard to take down Tali but damn was the turn of events absolutely heart breaking
“Funny how my story started being thrown into a box, and now I’m going into one willingly.”
That’s how strong her love is for him. Despite the YEARS of torture she went through, especially being buried or trapped in a cage. She wanted to be confined with the one person she truly loves.
So relieved they got the happy ending they deserve and I am so excited for Kaynes book!

M.L has gone and given us yet another masterpiece full of trauma, heart wrenching scenes and so much love.

As the second book in the duet, we get answers to all our questions - and then end up asking more questions, and THEN get our hearts ripped out multiple times and then it all gets put back together in the end. I actually wrote in my notes at one point: M.L this is cruel 😂

I did love watching the bond blossom with Xera, Kai and their butterfly. I loved the twists and turns, and the spice?? Wooooooah it was next level. We had new characters introduced, some returned, and some you don’t expect.

Xera finally accepting that she can’t do everything on her own was incredibly brave and I think should be highlighted. Accepting help is something I personally fight with everyday, so seeing it spelt out in a book made me feel seen.

This duet is pitch-black. There are some seriously graphic scenes, so I would highly encourage you to take a squiz at the trigger warnings before diving in. If you’re a no trigger kinda person, go in blind. The shock value is worth it.

There was never even a question that this book was going to be five stars for me 💫 🙌🏽🖤😮‍💨🫶🏽

✨ Tropes:
🖤 Possessive antihero
🔥 Dark romance tension
🪄 Expanding magic system
⏳ Race against fate
🩸 Trauma & survival arc
👯 Found family (with new characters!)
💔 Separation → reunion payoff
⚔️ Sacrifice & vengeance

📖 Summary:
All Your Deadly Truths by M.L. Burns is the second half of a duet that throws readers right back into Kai, Syndi, and Xera’s dark, twisted world. Xera has been taken, and Kai will stop at nothing to get her back even if it means sacrificing everything fate demands. Along the way, new allies appear, the magic system deepens, and choices grow darker. This book is relentless, raw, and beautifully haunting, proving that even in the deepest shadows, there’s power in survival and love.

💭 My Review:
How can I even put into words what this duet has done to me? 😮‍💨 I originally came into the series for a good time, but I stayed because not only was it deliciously dark, the storyline itself was phenomenal.

We jump right back in, Kai and Syndi racing to save Xera—and let me just say, I’m so glad Mel didn’t keep them apart for long. My heart was aching, and I stayed up past 1 AM just to see them reunited. It was everything I needed and more 🖤We meet several new characters, and the magic system in this world expands in ways that completely pulled me in!

This book is intense! Darker than most I’ve read. Please check your trigger warnings before diving in, because while the way Mel handles trauma ultimately empowers Xera, not every reader will be comfortable with the depth of it. Personally, I thought it was INCREDIBLY well done, it gave so much weight to her growth and her fight. 😩

And Kai… oh, I missed him. So often, once a morally gray love interest falls in love, he turns into a lovesick puppy. But not Kai. He still has his sharp edges, his darkness, his bite 🩸 and I craved him more for it. Oh and… shadows baby shadows 🤤🌑

Sydni also got more shine in this book, and some absolutely wild moments set her up perfectly for future storylines. I cannot wait to see where Mel takes her next. ✨😅

By the end, the tension and twists had me staring at the wall like, what did I just read?! And yet, it wrapped up with this perfect, hauntingly beautiful black bow. With only 30 minutes left in the book, I was thinking, “How is Mel possibly going to pull this off?” But she did—and she did it flawlessly!

If you loved book one, your eyeballs are not ready for this ride. 👀

Side note: If you haven’t read Heavy by Mel yet, what are you even doing? Truly, I joked that this book should’ve been titled Heavier because that’s exactly what it brought. 🖤🤯

Finally, a huge thank you to Mel and Misha for working with me last minute on an ARC application. I’ll forever be thankful and treasure the fact that I was able to read this book early!

“revenge is a bitch, and her name is xeraphine.”

truer words have never been written!! 😅 wow, what a wild ride! pleeease check triggers, i BEG of you. xera’s “family” dynamic? is extremely disturbing 😭 this second book was even darker and definitely more unsettling. i had to put it down a few times to regroup, but the found family kept me invested and reading until the end, and i’m so glad i kept going! this is packed with rage, spice, and a psychotically vengeful fmc. excited to read more from this author! 🖤

This book picks up right where the first one left off, which I appreciated. The so-called “good guys” form a gang to hunt down Xeraphine, while she goes on… let’s call it a “different kind of journey.” Honestly - check your triggers, because everything dark and disturbing gets thrown in here with no restraint.

Sydni is still resilient, even if a bit lost, but she’s holding it together better than the story. The middle section? Childish. Worse than Zodiac Academy. I enjoy humor, but in a book this dark, it should at least match the tone.

As the story drags on, it becomes more parody than supernatural fantasy. And the worst part? There are fantastic ideas buried in here. Hell having a waiting room with numbered tickets, unique magical species that could’ve been used to flesh out the world. Everything is mentioned once and then tossed aside. Worldbuilding is nonexistent. It’s like being shown a door to an amazing story, but then the author slams it shut and forces you into sloppy, childish dialogue instead.

The prose is clunky, with exaggerated characters (Xera especially) that tip straight into cringe. Inner monologues are mostly filler and could be skipped without losing track. Add in grammar and spelling mistakes, and the whole thing feels unpolished.

And let’s talk tone. Dark subject matter doesn’t scare me. I don’t mind it if it makes sense and drives the plot forward. But here? It’s cranked up to eleven for shock value alone. Gratuitous violence of every type, none of it necessary, all of it overdone. Cringe on top of cringe. Even Kai and Xera’s dominating interactions felt pointless, especially when Kai’s inner monologue had already established he’d walk barefoot through glass for her. Did we really need to derail his character just to “prove” it?

And the ending? Clumsy, overblown, and far too convenient. Unanswered questions everywhere, yet somehow tied off with a pretty bow.

The first book was much stronger. I don’t mind a vibes read and I don’t need a masterpiece every time, but this didn’t land anywhere in between either. If I hadn’t enjoyed book one and known this was a duet, I’d have DNFed. Instead, I’m left disappointed at the wasted potential. It gave me Psycho Shifters flashbacks and trust me, that’s not a compliment.
