Rebecca Stone is smart and driven. She has dreamed of being a sports reporter for her entire life, and now that she has landed her very first job at a TV station in tiny Curtinville, Texas, her dream is starting to become a reality.

The only problem? Curtinville may be small in size, but
it's home to plenty of big secrets.

It doesn't take long for Rebecca to figure out that money, power, and greed are the names of the game here. Everything that the beloved Curtinville Cats do on the football field is overshadowed by the dirty deals that are going on behind the scenes. The Cats aren't the only ones who are good at drawing up trick plays. Some of the biggest names in town play dirty tricks every single day.

Rebecca arrives in Curtinville believing that hard work is the key to earning respect and building a successful career. She's so serious about her work that she refuses to give in to her feelings for the steamy ex-quarterback -- even though he has her squarely in his sights. But as she soon learns, doing the right thing doesn't always pay off. In fact, in Curtinville, it can be the easiest way to land in some serious hot water.

How far will Curtinville's elite go to keep their secrets hidden?

How many consequences will Rebecca suffer for exposing the truth?

Will all of those trick plays crush her dreams forever?

Author. Dreamer. Entrepreneur.

That's how Jessica Kelly describes herself. Just like the main character in her first book, Trick Play, Jessica believes that hard work is the key to success. Luckily, though, creating new characters and new plot twists doesn't feel like work to her! Jessica has always had a passion for writing, and she has dreamed of becoming a successful author for more years than she can count.

So what about the "Entrepreneur" part?

That proves just how serious Jessica is about turning her dream into reality. Her goal isn't to write a book or two in her spare time. Instead, she's focused on building a successful writing career from the ground up. She's not content to JUST have a dream. She's willing to do whatever it takes to make it come true.

Jessica began living the dream the moment she started writing Trick Play. When she's not dreaming up new story ideas, this native Floridian can be found spending quality time with friends and family, soaking up the sun on the beach, and -- of course -- reading.

I'm a bit biased, since this is my book! I had an amazing time creating "Trick Play", and I hope you'll have just as good of a time reading it!

This was ok, an easy read but something seemed to be missing. It was still readable and I enjoyed it, just not anything great.

3.5 stars standalone, sports romance between a sports journalist and ex football star with a scandal thrown in too!

Trick Play was my first book by Jessica Kelly. I was drawn to this book by the blurb as I’m a big fan of sports romances and I found the book to be ok.

The two main characters, Rebecca, a sports journalist, and Brock, an ex sports star, have a clear chemistry from the first time they meet but the book has more drama than romance that we get small glimpses into their growing relationship but not huge amounts. Up until about 75% in the book I would say I liked the hero as he was different than normal sports romance heroes as he had already retired and the story was showing his life after sport but then his whole character changed for me. I get emotion was supposed to play a part after an incident and could have forgiven him for his actions at that point but then his actions again at around 85% in the book was just really uncomfortable and undid everything for me. However, I did continue and the romance fan in me was glad to see a HEA for the couple but I just lost my connection to the characters by that point as it was all so quick in happening.

Trick Play is relatively well written and is told from three perspectives; Rebecca’s view mostly, Brock’s on and off and then finally, Mick, Rebecca’s boss, occasionally when needed to move the story along. There is a decent plot with the uncovering of a scandal in a small football obsessed town but as already said, the romance wasn’t quite fully there for me.

If you are looking for something different in the sports romance category, as this book is free, give it a go and you will probably enjoy some parts of it. It’s not only a standalone but does have a HEA too. I would give it a solid 3.5 stars.

The book was okay until the scene with Brock and Missy. I didn't understand the point of it; plus it ruined his character for me.

Just have unprotected sex with a bimbo and right after realize it was a mistake because you were drunk and depressed and decide if the girl you really want finds out you will LIE...WTF. This scene totally ruined the book for me
