Bryan Smith is the Splatterpunk Award-winning author of more than forty horror and crime books, including 68 Kill, the cult classic Depraved and its sequels, as well as The Killing Kind, Slowly We Rot, The Freakshow, and many more. Bestselling horror author Brian Keene called Slowly We Rot, "The best zombie novel I've ever read."
68 Kill was adapted into a motion picture directed by Trent Haaga and starring Matthew Gray Gubler of the long-running CBS series Criminal Minds. 68 Kill won the Midnighters Award at the SXSW film festival in 2017 and was released to wide acclaim, including positive reviews in The New York Times and Bloody Disgusting.
Bryan also co-scripted an original Harley Quinn story for the House of Horrors anthology from DC Comics. He has worked with renowned horror publishers in both the mass market and small press spheres, including Leisure Books, Samhain Publishing, Grindhouse Press, Death’s Head Press, and more. His works are available wherever books are sold, with select titles also available in German and Italian.
The follow up to The Killing Kind picks up some 4+ years later, Rob has just been acquitted and is finally out of jail, Julie is now rich and notoriously famous after writing a book about the events at Myrtle Beach and Emily, well Emily has Chuck chained up in the basement, torture being the dish of the day. Every day for poor old Chuck.
Everyone’s just waiting for Roxie, the remorseless and ruthless killer that captures all the attention. Where’s she been hiding, who’s she going to kill next and when it kicks off, there’s once again bucket loads of blood.
The major difference with this follow up compared to the original is that every player in the game is now an uncontrollable psychopathic killer, there’s just no break from it at all and a game it has most definitely become. You see there’s now a bit of structure behind the killing as an incredibly rich benefactor crawls out of the woodwork to offer targets and scenarios that can now be voted on by a select bunch of viewers. So all the contestants go out on killing sprees, their performance is rated and the eventual winners receive a big prize.
The only problem, Roxie tends not to play fair and badly wants to win.
This is bold and brash entertainment, completely over the top in a leave your brain on the mantelpiece kinda way, lashings of sex and a tornado of violence that just can’t be avoided. At the end of the day, there’s very little thinking required, you just have to go with the flow and not take anything too seriously. But you will be entertained.
I gave The Killing Kind 2 four stars, based on the entertainment and enjoyment alone, it won’t be everyone’s thing but Bryan Smith fills a void for me. One where I don’t have to concentrate too much but I’m still rocking with anticipation.
Great ending by the way, I think we've not heard the last from one of the most violent female characters around.
If I could give this book 10 stars I would!!! I thought the first Killing Kind was good but this one knocks spots of it, it's fucking brilliant! I can't recommend this enough I suggest everyone try this
Roxie and Rob (and Emily and Julie and Chuck) are back in Bryan Smith's follow up to his murder-spree thriller, The Killing Kind. And in the tradition of sequels the world over, events are even crazier, bloodier and more ridiculous than the first time round. The women are all kill-crazy psychopaths, and then men are (mostly) pathetic pawns who are either "forced" to participate and or allow themselves to be swung to the dark side by the sheer magnetism of the women they're in love with.
So as long as you're up for the most pulpy of pulpy thrillers and can detach brain accordingly, there's much fun to be had with The Killing Kind 2. It goes places the average reader probably would not like to go, but for the rest of us Smith fans, it's a serviceable entry into his bibliography without offering anything new or overly impressive.

Meine Meinung
In full disclosure, I am a major fan of Bryan Smith's work. This sequel certainly didn't lose any steam from its initial installment. Fast paced action and plenty of violence awaits the reader--on these two areas Smith never fails to deliver. My drawbacks? 1. Very one dimensional characters this time around. 2. Too much sex added to the novel. (I know others will find fault with my complaint here, but it really became repetitive and purposeless.) 3. As usual, there was the single page added that included an action of depravity that did not move the novel forward, but seemed to be added to appease those who enjoy the especially heinous and abominable. Overall, if you loved its predecessor TKK, this is a must read. Smith has tremendous talent and really is a blinding light in the horror genre.
I enjoy the characters, and over the top story line. The book opened well, but the premise of the rich man supporting the game, and the presence of a group of people who support this interest were not set up well, making it difficult to believe even in this story line. Furthermore, the characters were not sufficiently similar to their previous selves even assuming character change due to time and circumstance. While not quite as good as the first novel, it was still an interesting story that I enjoyed reading.
I almost put this one down after meeting one of the most annoying characters I've come across in a long time. Good thing I held out though because not only does it get better, the storyline takes a delightfully twisted and surprising turn. AND the character does receive her comeuppance, which is what we all want right? lol
Bryan Smith has done it! He wrote a better book than The Killing Kind. More violence, gore, sex done with style. By far the best book I read this year.
Rob stumbled backward but was able to remain upright until he stepped on something soft but resistant. The pained yowl of a cat startled him and instinct kept him from putting his full weight down. He didn’t want to crush the fat furball. So he was off-balance as the old gray cat slithered away from him. This allowed Jane to get close enough to slash at him with the butcher knife.
Not as good as the first book. Most sequels aren't. Still was an entertaining and humorous read. This is the third book I've read by Bryan Smith and I plan on reading more.
Well written bloody sequel to The Killing Kind. The reunion of the surviving thrill-kill group from the beach house massacre results in even more torture, murder and mayhem when an elderly billionaire sets in motion a four team killing game. Tarantino could have fun with this. Recommended to all with strong stomachs.
This novel is a follow up to the 2010 novel of the same name. We pick up with the survivors from the first novel. Missy has been in hiding avoiding the law, Rob has been in jail, and the others have stayed out of the public eye. However, a wealthy but vicious billionaire decides to hold a deadly competition between the survivors of the first novel with the addition of a couple newcomers. The contestants rip through America towards a bloody conclusion.
I enjoyed this novel more than the first. The kills are more brutal than its predecessor. Also, I really enjoyed the use of this shadowy syndicate who is controlling the game and the contestants. The ending to the novel totally surprised me and sets up for a third novel, hopefully.
The best way I can describe this book is to compare it to two movies: Natural Born Killers and Pulp Fiction. Place both those movies in a blender and you get The Killing Kind 2.
Bryan Smith is one of the better horror writers going these days, and unlike some of his colleagues, he knows how to end a story. Highly suggested to those who like a lot of gore, sex, and mayhem.
It's not necessary to read the first book (The Killing Kind), but I do suggest it.
Another great one from Bryan Smith, not quite as good as The Killing Kind 1 (the first ones are quite often the best) but still enjoyable and as much a page turner. Bit worried there won't be a third as of the wipeout in the second. Excuse me as I have to go and read another Bryan Smith (just started Darkened) Bryan Smith is fast becoming my King/Laymon replacement/alternative!
Wow! Just wow. I have been a fan of Smith's ever since reading the first Killing Kind book and I was hooked from the very first chapter. This book is crazy, with some real shocking sex and violence but it's also very clever and funny in parts. Roxie has got to be one of my all time favourite characters. I highly recommend this book and it's prequel to any horror fans. Absolutely loved it
Bryan Smith delivers once again. I won't say this was better than the previous novel but that's only because the Killing Kind is a personal favorite. It still deserves five stars though and I can't wait for the third installment. I'm definitely one of the 'Diary of a Mixed-up Girl' fans. Cheers!
This signed Hardcover edition of Killing Kind 2 by Thunderstorm Books is number 4 in the Bitter Ale Series and is signed and Numbered by Bryan Smith. This is is number 51 of 64 copies.
Very entertaining serial killer romp. Highly recommended to people who are able to disconnect their consciences and just enjoy what's going on without thinking too hard about it.
