Elspeth Moonflower just wants to cast a spell. Unfortunately, that’s impossible due to a curse her grandmother cast that forces every witch in her family to marry before using magic. As a result, Elspeth and her sisters are outcasts, helping their mother run her traveling apothecary shop—while she complains that her daughters are all magicless spinsters.
When their cart breaks down and strands them in the charming village of Thistlegrove, Elspeth’s older sister meets a handsome warlock who’s smitten. If only the warlock’s best friend wasn’t completely insufferable. Draven Darkstone is broody, arrogant, wealthy—a perfect example of why Elspeth never wants to marry. But for the sake of her sister, she needs to be nice.
Which is hard when all Draven does is glower at her. It’s even harder when the glowering turns to longing glances. It’s downright impossible when he kisses her.
Little does Elspeth know, the line between love and hate just got thinner.
The low-stakes fantasy of Legends and Lattes meets the romance of Bridgerton inPotions & Prejudice, a spicy cozy fantasy romance with a grumpy sentient cottage, an anxious miniature dragon, and all the cottagecore vibes.
LOVED IT with my entire cozy heart! For every Pride & Prejudice fangirl that wished the story was more MAGICAL…and little more smutty!
✨🍄🟫🍄🌱✨🤎✨🌱🍄🍄🟫✨
Super cozy & low stakes fantasy closely inspired by Pride & Prejudice. The character personalities and relationship arcs are similar but the storyline is different, which made the story much more interesting.
I’m a huge fan of Pride & Prejudice (I rewatch the movie at least once a week) so I already knew I will love this but the cottage core vibes, lovable characters & the magical possibilities wrapped this up in a fantastically adorable story. I especially loved Elspeth’s character, her protective nature & fierce love for her sisters.
✨ enemies-to-lovers but with SPICE
🍄 sisterly drama
✨ grumpy mmc in a billowy white shirt *a must for P&P*
🍄 magical forest cottage, family curses & a pet dragon
✨ modern smutty language!
I canNOT overstate the coziness!! A magical forest cottage with an abandoned library in need of a fix up. Small town businesses with adorable characters. And a magical creatures you can’t help to love.
4.5 ⭐️ only because I felt the ending was a bit rushed
Potions and Prejudice (Moonflower Witches #1) by Tee Harlowe
Book Blurb: Witch hates warlock. Warlock hates witch. Warlock falls for witch. . . . Things get very, very complicated.

Loved this cozy fantasy with just the right amount of spice .. and Soup !!! Elspeth was the perfect “older sister “ always taking care of the family. I loved the relationship and dynamic between her sisters and the whole town. It was really fun to see them flourish. Absolutely adored the cottage , MVP right there. Had me laughing so often. Loved the little “familiar “ dragon which was just fun. Draven was moody and tough around the edges. My favorite!! The spice was sooo hot and so much fun. Loved the banter and build up between Elspeth and Draven. Loved the whole small town vibe.
Favorite Quote: "If any real men were as good as the ones in my books, maybe I'd be more interested," Prue yelled. (I think Prue may be my favorite sister)
This book has: Grumpy X Grumpy :) Enemies to Lovers Found Family Magic Potions Small Town
Potions & Prejudice is such a cozy story, and I loved every minute of reading it!
There are quite a lot of characters in this book but not once was I confused by any of them. The author wrote this book so well, that you don't lose track of any of the side characters, and they all make the story even better!
Elspeth Moonflower, the FMC, is a grumpy witch without her magic, just trying to keep her family safe by moving them from town to town so nobody recognizes or gets to know them well enough to learn their secret. But fate has a different plan when the Moonflower's magical cart crashes and requires repairs before they can continue their nomadic lifestyle, or sell their potions to earn money.
Draven Darkstone (love the name!), is also a grumpy warlock tavern owner, who ends up being super rich and powerful, and who is not looking to have a relationship with anyone, especially Elspeth Moonflower, the insufferable witch who came into his tavern and made incorrect assumptions about him from the start.
I really enjoyed the fact that this is a grumpy-grumpy book, it makes the banter so much better when both characters dislike each other! There was so much fun in this story, from the moon ball game night that poor Draven is sucked into playing, to the best sidekick pet dragon, Edgar. There is also the grumpy tavern frequenter Veldar, who spreads his grumpiness to the Moonflower family and their soup stand. And then all of Elspeth's sisters, Prue who you rarely find without her nose in a book (can we relate or what?), Auggie who is just full of mischief, and Adelaide the shy quiet one. I also just love how much Elspeth and Draven hate each other, which of course somehow draws them to each other, much to their chagrin.
While this book is a slow burn, it does get spicy! This story is a perfectly cozy, spicy, romance that you won't want to put down!
Thank you so much to the author for a copy of this book!
Fav Quotes: "I tried not to stare at the white shirt he wore, the way it wrapped tight around his muscles, the way it was unbuttoned just enough so I could see his hard chest, remember the way my hands had been pressed against it when he'd tackled me in his tavern."
"...and pulled out a decorative glittery wand with ribbon tied around it and a big fluffy ball on the top. It looked ridiculous. And damnit, I wanted it." (Draven)
"Elspeth turned with a smile, one that might've rivaled the sun. Her luminosity struck me as I stared at her, as I couldn't stop staring at her."
"My first instinct was to pull away, but as soon as I got a taste of her lips, I was done for. I couldn't have pulled away even if she was on fire and threatening to burn me alive."
"I hadn't known men could kiss like that. Then again, I'd never met a man like Draven Darkstone."
"I'd kissed Draven Darkstone-and liked it. I groaned, scrubbed my hands over my face. But I hated him."
""Kissing you is like fighting with you," I said, breathing hard. A sparring of mouths, teeth, tongues-full of passion and fire. "It makes me want more. It makes me never want to stop.""
"His tongue, his mouth, was going to destroy me, and I was ready. I wanted to be demolished. Wrecked. Ruined for all other men."
This was a super cute cozy fantasy that had me giggling.
The story follows grumpy Elspeth and her mom and sisters as Elspeth tries to make sure her family is taken care of. They have been accidentally cursed and do not have their magic. I loved the dynamics of Elspeth and her family. Their magical cart breaks down and they have to stay in town until it is fixed.
Then you have Draven (grumpy tavern owner who has a hard time taking care of his sister after his parents died). Elspeth meet Draven, Draven meet Elspeth. Let the hate commence. There was so much funny banter between the two and the tension was great! It had me giggling quite a few times. One of my favorite scenes was when they were playing moonball....hilarious! Oh, and of course that closet scene!!
At its core, this a sweet, funny, cozy fantasy romance (+ 🌶️) with found family vibes that will leave you wanting some soup at the end!
This is perfect for you if you enjoy
✨Grumpy grumpy main characters ✨Sentient cottage ✨Cursed witch🪄 ✨Broody warlock ✨He falls first ✨Only one closet ✨Pocket-sized dragon ✨Slow burn ✨Cozy fantasy but with spice🌶️ ✨Cozy cottage vibes 🧺🍄
Thank you so much to the author Tee for the ARC, all opinions are my own.
“You think I care about some stupid curse? I can survive you being cursed. What I can’t survive is a life without you.”
Tee Harlowe’s Potions and Prejudice was adorable. Imagine Pride and Prejudice but with potions, magic, cottagecore vibes, and a tiny anxious dragon named Edgar—yeah, it’s as cute as it sounds.
I was instantly hooked. The pacing is perfect; nothing drags, and I never felt lost or rushed. The main characters (Elspeth and Draven) are in their 30s, and their connection is so well done (both emotionally and physically). It’s got that warm, slow-burn tension but also real depth, which made all the swoony moments hit even harder. I actually also really liked the side characters as well (yes, even Mrs. Moonflower—aka “Mrs. Bennet”).
And even though the story is obviously a nod to Austen’s work, the magical twist on Austen’s world feels original and alive without losing that familiar charm. This is the kind of book you curl up with on the couch during a rainy day or take on a picnic during a warm, sunny day. It’s quick, cozy, a little spicy, and totally delightful. Highly recommend if you love magical small towns, soft romance, and anything Austen-adjacent with a fantasy twist. 10/10 would move into Thistlegrove tomorrow!
Let me start by saying, I love Pride and Prejudice, so remaking it as a spicy, cozy fantasy and adding in a pocket sized dragon, I'm all in. I adore the sibling relationships, they feel very realistic. And the worry of the older siblings ends up adding a layer to those secondary characters that makes me really want to read their stories later. Draven is a perfect Darcy, Tee made even the background of Thistlegrove and the community vibrant and easy to fall in love with. And Edgar, the mini dragon, pulled me in right from the start, I love him so so much.
Umm this was so freaking cute!! A sentient grumpy cottage, a talking anxious mini dragon, a magical small town with residents that defend their own, strong sibling bonds. Oh and a delicious romance that starts as hate and turns into true love. Such a magical, romantic, cozy story with cottagecore vibes.
The dynamics between Elspeth and her sisters were complicated and realistic but above all they loved each other. At first I wasn’t the biggest fan of her mom, but she grew on me as you learn what a tough life they’ve led and it’s evident she just wants what’s best for her daughters. Elspeth is very guarded due to her past but she slowly works through these issues with her family and Draven’s help along the way. She’s a caregiver and protective of her family, the burdens she carries heavy. But she learns to be courageous with her heart. I love how she helps heal the bond between Georgie and Draven. That sibling relationship was also really heartwarming.
The banter and tension of this true hate to true love between Draven and Elspeth was so delicious. And when the spice hits 🥵.
Also not the grumpy old man making me burst into tears at midnight 😭. VELDAR you absolute sweetheart.
I cannot wait for more stories in this world! Thanks to MTMC Tours and the author for the review copy, thoughts are my own.
I give this book 4 1/2⭐️ I really enjoyed it it is such a fun cozy fantasy with a grumpy & grumpy trope that was so fun a sassy house and a fun cast of characters I can’t for there stories and yes this book does have spice
There is sweet & precious, and then there is Tee Harlow's level of sweetness & preciousness. And Tee never gets it wrong. Never.
Potions & Prejudice is yet another of Tee's cosy fantasy masterpieces. You know that feeling of easiness & comfiness associated with golden rays of sunshine, lovely company, and let's say, a bowl of tomato & basil soup? Yes, that is how Tee makes you feel with each of her stories.
Potions & Prejudice is Book 1 of Tee's newest Moonflower Witches series. As it's always the case, it's filled with great plots, lower stakes, & beautifully crafted characters. Not to mention the cutest animal companions ever.
If you get a chance, I urge you to read the prequel to the series, Magic & Matchmaking. It sets the perfect stage and offers a much bigger picture. But, even without it, Potions & Prejudice is just what the doctor prescribed—a love story of two people held down by duties & responsibilities, trying to adapt, accept, & evolve. And, eventually, learning to find love & home in one another. Add to the mix difficult life circumstances, life on the road, taverns with ale & laughter, (found) family, & a talking animal companion. What more could you ask for?
Gift yourself the magic of Tee's stories and enter the worlds she has created; you will never want to leave.
Pride and prejudice retelling!? With an anxious mini dragon called Edgar and a grumpy warlock who hates the new comer witch who gets under his skin and somehow under him… all the time… This retelling was addictive! The banter between the MMC and FMC was top tier. The mini dragon remarks through the book were hilarious, you could just totally picture this mini dragon and the personality he has! Draven owns a tavern and is constantly trying to perfect his spell, he has a sister whos always getting into trouble and he now has to deal with the new comer, Elspeth, a witch who’s the only person who’s been able to get under his skin and is utterly infuriating! Draven is untrusting, after too long of being used for his money and his name, he doesn’t take well to new comers. So when five new witches who’ve come to town, with little to no money and a broken down cart, he’s more then untrusting. Especially when one of them seems to have bewitched his best friend, Elm, who too has wealth. If he has to put up with Elspeth to keep an eye on his best friend and her sister intentions then he will. Elspeth, is loyal to her family and will do anything to keep them safe. They have been on the move for 12 years never staying one place too long. Never making permanent connections. They have a secret that could put her whole family into danger. No one could find out. She made sure that no one ever had enough time to wonder anything suspicious about them. So when their cart breaks down just out of the town they were leaving and they have no money to fix it straight away. She must push aside her fears and stay on high alert as they stay in town longer than they have had to before. She has to make sure her sister isn’t being fooled into love like she was before with a man she met at the Market called Elm. While she has to deal with his best friend who is the most arrogant, frustrating, man. She doesn’t trust him and he doesn’t trust her. This retelling if filled with so much banter and goodness with the perfect amount of spice! Love all these things then you neeeeeed to read this! 🪄hate to love 🪄cursed witch x powerful grumpy warlock 🪄pocket sized dragon 🪄he falls first 🪄slow burn 🪄grumpy sentient cottage 🪄only one closet 🪄fantasy pride and prejudice retelling 🪄travelling apothecary
Potions & Prejudice" by Tee Harlow was a truly enchanting read that offered a whimsical and wonderfully fresh take on a beloved classic. As someone who often finds themselves spiraling into "what if" scenarios, I resonated deeply with Elspeth. Her anxiety and tendency to jump to worst-case conclusions felt incredibly familiar, and it was comforting to see a protagonist grapple with those internal struggles in such a relatable way. Harlow did a fantastic job of portraying her inner world, making her journey of self-discovery all the more engaging.
I was incredibly excited to watch her relationship with Draven unfold. Their enemies-to-lovers dynamic, brimming with witty banter and an undeniable pull, was absolutely captivating. There were moments I absolutely adored him, charmed by his wit and undeniable chemistry with Elspeth. Then, just as quickly, I'd find myself frustrated by his actions or misunderstandings. It was a true love-hate dynamic that kept me on my toes and added an intriguing layer to their developing romance. Personally, I would have loved a little more on-page spice in their relationship, though I understand that's not everyone's cup of tea and can sometimes be a personal preference. Even without it, the slow-burn anticipation was still enough to keep me eagerly turning the pages.
Harlow did a fantastic job of creating the charming world of Thistlegrove; I could easily picture myself wandering its quaint streets and delving into its magical nooks. It was a real treat to see the village and its quirky residents come to life. While I wished for a bit more expansive world-building, my imagination happily filled in the blanks, allowing me to fully immerse myself. Overall, "Potions & Prejudice" was a charming, witty, and deeply satisfying read that I'd wholeheartedly recommend!

Obsessed.. Literally obsessed with this novel and this new world from Tee Harlowe.
I loved the brief introduction to Thistlegrove via the novella Magic & Matchmaking.. but there is something special about Potions & Prejudice because again the obsession is real now. The Moonflower witches all are so lovable and Tee sprinkling their story and circumstances throughout the novel was perfection. It’s quite amazing the strength these witches have and what they’ve gone through in all the years that they haven’t had their magic.
You instantly love Elspeth as the fierce protector and guardian of the family… initially I would say I had some negative feelings toward the Moonflower matriarch, Thea, and how she seemed to shy away from the role of matriarch of the family - but I loved her by the end. Each Moonflower sister is so intriguing and I CANNOT wait to get each of their stories…. PLEASE tell me we ware getting each of their stories. Draven (sigh) oh Mr Darkstone… which by the way when Elspeth calls him that its a full swoon Mr Darcy moment and I am here for it! The first interaction between Elspeth and Draven was perfection… it was so hostile and hatred filled that it created the perfect starting point for their relationship in this book. I had so many favorite moments but am just blown away by Tee’s creativity and ingenuity. I mean.. MOONBALL?? Need I say more. I loved moonball so much and a simple & seemingly lighthearted scene actually was a pivotal moment in the book and for Draven & Elspeth. Tee imagined and wove an incredible story and I cannot wait to follow along in this magical world!
Witchy, spicy, heart melting, with the threat of danger lurking right out of view. This is a cozy and fun read from Tee Harlowe. If you are a fan of Pride & Prejudice and Bridgerton, then this book will bring elements of both, along with the element of magic. The witches, I’ll get to them in a moment. Who stole my heart? Edgar. When you meet him, he will have your heart as well. He was the perfect addition to this book. I would fight for this tiny dragon.
Ok, now to the witches. The Moonflowers are constantly on the move. It’s dangerous business when you are witches with no magic, thanks to a well meaning grandmother’s accidental curse. They can get their magic back…if they marry. Still, Elspeth, and her three sisters (Adelaide, Auggie, and Prue) help sell the potions their mother (Thea) makes as they travel from town to town. Always careful to not get too close or draw too much attention. Until their magical cart breaks just outside a town called Thistlegrove.
This is where Elspeth meets a grumpy tavern owner, Draven Drakstone. Sparks fly right away to make it very difficult for them to be around each other. He’s incredibly suspicious of this family that has popped into the town. Yet, life just keeps throwing them together. Until there is no denying what is there. The tension between them builds up, but when the spice is there, it is good!
Some of the other side characters you will love will be Elm, Draven’s best friend, Georgia, Draven’s troublemaking little sister that just wants his attention, grumpy old Veldar, and an incredibly cantankerous cottage that has very strong opinions. The banter all throughout this book is just great. Between all the different characters.
This delightful cottage core story releases on June 3rd. After that, Moonball anyone? You can get the prequel novella, Magic & Matchmaking, from Tee’s newsletter, as well as the prologue to P&P. Hopefully, we will see more of these sisters in the future.
Thank you, Tee, for allowing me to be a part of your ARC team. The opinions, review, and profession of love for a tiny dragon are all honest and my own.
Mr Darcy with magic?? Say less. I was in before I even finished the blurb.
I’m fully obsessed with cozy romantasy. I’m fully obsessed with Pride & Prejudice (yes, 2005 Matthew Macfadyen is the only Mr Darcy that matters). So when I heard this book was blending those two things together? I basically screamed and pre-ordered on the spot. And honestly? It gave me everything I wanted and more.
The Moonflower sisters are cursed (literally), on the run, and doing their best to survive in a world that’s decided women like them shouldn’t have power unless they’re married. Cue the slowest slow burn, a grumpy witch with major repressed feelings, and a charming little town with nosy neighbors and dangerous secrets. I ate it up.
Potions & Prejudice takes the iconic Elizabeth/Darcy dynamic—full of banter, tension, and That Longing™—and makes it fresh with Elspeth and Draven. Their first meeting? Spiky and delicious. Their arc? SO satisfying. Draven is peak emotionally constipated man trying (and failing) not to fall in love, while Elspeth is busy cracking his defenses with sheer willpower and a lot of sarcasm. It’s glorious.
Tee captures that very specific magic of two people who are so similar they drive each other mad… until they figure out how to meet in the middle. And when they do? UGH. Perfect. Add in sisterly bonds, magical politics, and grief handled with so much care, and you’ve got a book that made me laugh, swoon, and maybe tear up once or twice.
Basically: it’s cozy, it’s witchy, it’s romantic, and it made my Austen-loving heart so, so happy.
Cute, cozy, sweet and spicy-I loved this Pride and Prejudice meets witchy sisters blend from Tee Harlowe and was grateful to be a part of her street team able to start reading this a bit early. While not entirely faithful to the original P+P storyline (as its book 1 of an ongoing series), I felt like the choices made with the storyline made this feel both nostalgic and fresh, and left me looking forward to figuring out just what is going on for the next book! This is a book that will give all Jane Austen lovers the feels, while also wrapping you up in a cozy, magical blanket. I really enjoyed this first book and hope to read the second one sooner than later!
I've been eagerly awaiting Potions & Prejudice ever since I first met Dravin Darkstone in Magic & Matchmaking—and let me just say, it was absolutely worth the wait!
This enchanting installment in the Moonflower series introduces us to Elspeth Moonflower, a determined and fiercely protective witch burdened by a family curse: she and her sisters are magically bound to remain powerless until they marry. Elspeth’s journey takes her across realms, dodging the consequences of living illegally in the Witchlands while shielding her mother and sisters from danger and judgment.
Enter Dravin Darkstone—a broody, mysterious tavern owner whose wealth and quiet power hide secrets even darker than his name. His ties to the Witch Superior add a delicious layer of tension to his growing connection with Elspeth. Their banter is absolute perfection—witty, sharp, and crackling with chemistry. Every conversation felt like a verbal duel wrapped in flirtation, and I couldn’t get enough.
Tee Harlow blends magic, romance, and family dynamics beautifully. The themes of loyalty, identity, and finding strength in vulnerability are woven seamlessly into the narrative. And let’s not forget the adorable dragons that add just the right touch of whimsy to this already enchanting world!
There’s just the right amount of spice to keep things heated without overpowering the heartfelt moments. Elspeth and Dravin's romance feels earned, electric, and utterly swoon-worthy.
I adored this story and can't wait for more Moonflower sister adventures. If you love magical worlds, strong heroines, brooding love interests, and stories brimming with heart and humor—Potions & Prejudice is a must-read.
Oh, my heart! If you're looking for a book that's like a warm, comforting hug with a delightful sprinkle of magic and a generous dose of enemies-to-lovers, then look no further than Tee Harlowe's "Potions & Prejudice." I can honestly say it cast a spell on me from the very first page!
Imagine a world where Jane Austen's beloved Bennet sisters are still navigating the treacherous waters of society, but this time, there's a dash of the fantastical. Our dear Elspeth Moonflower, still as sharp-witted and independent as ever, finds herself running a small but bustling apothecary. She’s far more at home concocting remedies and brewing teas than she is at stuffy balls. And then, in walks Mr. Darcy aka Draven Darkstone. But this isn't just any Mr. Darcy – he's the epitome of haughty, arrogant, and magically powerful.
From their very first encounter, sparks fly, and not always the good kind! The banter between Elspeth and Draven is an absolute masterclass. It's witty, it's quick, and it’s laced with that delicious tension that makes your stomach flutter. You can practically feel the crackle of their opposing personalities as they navigate misunderstandings, social expectations, and a healthy dose of magical mishaps. The push and pull, the "I can't stand you but also I'm totally intrigued by you" energy that makes their eventual softening towards each other all the more satisfying.
What I adored most about this book was how Harlowe wove in the magical elements so seamlessly. It never felt forced or out of place, instead adding a truly unique and enchanting layer to a familiar story. The potions became an integral part of the characters' lives and the challenges they face. And the way Elspeth uses her knowledge of herbs and elixirs to help her community is just so endearing. It truly emphasizes her caring and compassionate nature, even when she's throwing daggers with her wit at Draven.
Speaking of Draven, while he starts off as delightfully insufferable, watching him slowly, begrudgingly, and then wholeheartedly fall for Elspeth is just chef's kiss. His internal struggles, his attempts to understand and apologize, and the moments where he lets his guard down are absolutely swoon-worthy. And Elspeth, with her fiery spirit and unwavering sense of self, is the perfect foil for him. Their journey from disdain to undeniable affection feels earned and genuine.
"Potions & Prejudice" is the kind of book you want to curl up with on a rainy afternoon, a cup of tea (perhaps a calming chamomile blend, just like Elspeth might brew!) in hand. It’s comforting, hilarious, and utterly romantic. If you're a fan of Jane Austen, a lover of cozy fantasy, or simply someone who enjoys a truly well-written enemies-to-lovers trope, you absolutely must add this to your TBR list. Tee Harlowe has brewed up something truly special, and I’m already craving my next dose! Highly, highly recommend!
In a new world with Tee and it was so sweet, cosy, endearing, and entertaining!
PAP is the first in a series of interconnected standalones where we follow a dual POV. In this witchy world, if you don’t have magic then you are banished and Elspeth and her family have been on the run. Accidentally cursed by her grandmother, Elspeth’s family has had their magic locked until marriage. However, the girls would rather earn love rather than undergo a forced marriage. So, nomads they are. But when their magical carriage breaks down, the Moonflower family is forced to stand still despite the risk. Enter a super grumpy tavern owner who ignited Elspeth’s fury as well as an enchanted cottage, a talking dragon, and a beautiful found family all with secrets of their own, we find ourselves traversing a whimsical and magical tale regarding choice, acceptance, and community.
The romance between Draven and Elspeth was fiery and antagonistic and intense. The banter, as always with Tee, is delightful and the characters are each so unique. I found myself grinning and warm from this cozy Romantasy.
Tropes you may find in PAP are enemies to lovers, found family, dysfunctional but lovable family, forced proximity, grumpy x grumpier, sassy cottage, medium spice, fun magical world, one closet, he falls first and so hard, cottagecore aesthetic, and a HEA with vibes towards book two.
Tee, it’s been such a joy to be on your street team and I love that I get to continue! Thank you!
Elspeth Moonflower has been hurt one too many times to trust anyone but her Mama and her sisters. But while running from the Witch Superior and trying to break the curse stopping their magic she runs head first into Draven Darkstone, a broody warlock hell bent on being an ass. Or is he just a damaged man in need of some... dare I say love?
This book was quite captivating. It hooked me in and I truly enjoyed every minute. There weren't any dull moments. While it wasn't all action packed, it was definitely entertaining. I loved the vibes of the book. It was just cozy enough to be comfortable but just spicy enough to cause a little.... tingle.
I would definitely recommend this one to anyone who enjoys a good cozy read that you can fall in love with from page 1.
Say What? A cozy fantasy retelling of my all-time favorite book ever Pride and Prejudice - COUNT ME IN. I absolutely devoured this one. Elspeth and Draven are the perfect fantasy world embodiment of their famous literary counterparts. I loved the additional twists that have been added to the story to make it fit perfectly in a fantasy world. Their banter and path to romance is heartwarming and it was awesome to have a bit of spice added to this classic tale. I also really appreciated the growth arc both them embark on throughout the tale. However, my favorite characters in this story are by far the sentient and EXTREMELY grumpy cottage Elspeth and her family find themselves staying at and Draven's anxious dragon Pet - Edgar. I want a pet dragon!!
Favorite Quote: "I was prepared to chase after you. I was going to follow you to ever corner of this realm if that's what it took to get you back. I wasn't going to work. To Eat. To sleep until I turned over every damn rock on the continent and found you."
Thank you to the author and RR Book Tours for the advanced copy. My opinions are my own.
Mr Darcy is a powerful witch and doing unspeakable things in hidden grottos.
I'm obsessed with cozy romantasy. I'm obsessed with Pride & Prejudice (looking at you 2005 Matthew Macfayden). So when I saw that Tee was working on a story combining them both, I RAN. And I was not disappointed.
Accidentally cursed by their Grandmama, the Moonflower women cannot access the magic of their birth right until they marry, and with the tyrannical Witch Superior only allowing those with magic to remain the Witchlands, they've been on the run trying to evade discovery from her magistrates ever since - but a broken cart and no tent means they're stuck in a town that's determined to get to know them.
Potions & Prejudice deliciously captures the heated, vexatious whirlwind of a dynamic between Elizabeth and Darcy, and makes it afresh between Elspeth and Draven. Their first meeting? Fraught, cutting, and filled with angst. Tee has so wonderfully captured the friction that sometimes happens between two people so similar before they broach that point of understanding, and it made their eventual clash that much sweeter. Draven is a stoic grump, throwing himself into his work to avoid confronting the mess he's making of raising his sister following their parents' passing, and Elspeth holds up a mirror whether he wants to look or not.
Did I mention there's a rain scene? Be still my beating heart.
Aside from a kick-your-feet romance, this story also features an exceptional cast of side characters with their own developed personalities and agendas - not least of all Elspeth's three sisters and mama. The Moonflower women feel like such a real family, caring, bickering, loving, and driving each other insane. This was a delightful, enchanting, spicy romantasy, perfect for devouring in one sitting.
Take the yearning from Elizabeth/Darcy from Pride and Prejudice and infuse it with the slow burn and spice from Kate/Anthony from Bridgerton, and you get Elspeth and Draven. And they’re magical, literally!🪄✨
Yes, it’s technically a retelling. BUT, Potions and Prejudice has its own voice, its own charm and its own personality! 🙂↕️🙂↕️ It doesn’t just rely on the classic bones - it takes the said foundation and builds a rich, funny and emotionally layered experience. And I am here for it!!!! 🙌🏽
Elspeth and Draven are immediately loveable, but also so relatable! As an older sister who has taken on the self-proclaimed responsibility for everyone in my family, I related hard with Elspeth. Her inner turmoil and second guessing if her decisions are in the best interest of her family was so ME!! 😩
The enemies to lovers arc is done SO WELL! It isn’t just “I hate you but you’re hot” but actual “I hate that I might be wrong about you and it’s making me introspect on my own issues”. 😍🥰
And while you THINK you know where is all going coz we all know Liz and Darcy’s story - you don’t!!! The plot has STAKES, and the twists and secrets are genuinely surprising! The found family is weird in the cutest, unassuming way, and the HEA feels earned! 🥹
This book is such a fresh take on a classic and I absolutely adored it! I haven’t had a book feel like a cozy, warm hug since The Spellshop, and this one did it for me! 😍🤩🫶🏽
Potions & Prejudice by Tee Harlowe ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶️🌶️ Cozy Fantasy Romance Tee Harlowe created a fantastical world that I fell right into from the start and couldn’t put the book down until I finished it (at 3 am because, well, I needed all the ‘tea’). While the title alludes to having ties to Pride & Prejudice, I have never read (or seen the movies), I know…. Shocker!, so I can’t relate my review to P&P, for me this was just a good read on a Sunday evening. The story centers on Elspeth Moonflower and her family who travel around in their potion cart until a mishap causes them to have an extended stay in the cute town of Thistlegrove. The town has many noteworthy characters, including the towns grumpy old man, an adorably anxious dragon, retired tea shop matchmaker, handsome tavern owner and his rebellious sister, and many more. Elspeth is very protective of her family and has issues trusting anyone. She and her family take up residence in a sentient cottage in the woods where they start to build a life outside of the town to keep their family secret undiscovered. But as much as Elspeth tries to keep things secluded, that doesn’t go as planned when you mix a sister who falls for a handsome stranger and his best friend (the MMC - Draven) into the story. What starts as a mutual loathing between our main characters slowly changes into something more. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good cozy fantasy with just a bit of spice in the right places mixed in. AND also check out the Prequel “Magic & Matchmaking”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Well this is just a cute, quick, cozy read that’s the perfect palette cleanser! It’s a mashup of Pride & Prejudice / Bridgerton vibes meets low stakes fantasy and is simply charming. I wouldn’t call it a slowwww burn, but it’s definitely not insta love either. A nice enemies to lovers, cozy fantasy romance that’s just a delight to read. And that ending? Tee- how are you giving us a HEA but also making us hurt a little bit??! I can’t wait until the next installment of the Moonflower Sisters Saga!
💜Cottagecore vibes ✨They hate each other 🕯️A cursed witch 💜A broody warlock ✨A grumpy sentient cottage 🕯️A pocket sized dragon 💜Only one closet ✨He falls first
There is open door spice (3 scenes? 🌶️🌶️.5)
Quotes that stuck with me:
“Whatever man you’re trying to snag, a potion won’t fix the problems between you. You can’t magic him into loving you. Not for real.”
“Just because it’s not bad doesn’t mean it’s good.”
“He was different in all the best ways.”
“I was right,” he said. “I knew you were going to wreck me.”
“Because she loves you, and love is terrifying…”
“I want to show them real love. I want to show them that it’s worth waiting for.”
“That’s before I knew that bravery comes in different forms.”
I lost momentum on this cozy, sweet fantasy retelling of Pride and Prejudice. It’s lower stakes, despite the characters’ emotional struggles feeling pretty damn looming to them. The story is character-driven and more than just the H and h experience some learned growth. Many lovely details and an atmospheric setting. Something was missing for me though and my continued poor mood didn’t help me when I began to disconnect. I skimmed the ending, which honestly felt weaker anyway. A couple other friends enjoyed this much more so please don’t let my lukewarmness hold anyone back. Esp if you enjoy Pride and Prejudice retellings with their own uniqueness and heart.
Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and both read like they were experienced, without getting into the nitty gritty.
Some tropes/themes: ☆ Both are kinda grumpy/guarded ☆ Both sacrificing for their families ☆ Older sibling energy ☆ FMC and her sisters have been cursed ☆ Her family goes from town to town ☆ MMC runs a tavern in a small town ☆ Dislike to reluctant understanding to love ☆ Cute talking dragon ☆ Secrets kept ☆ Misunderstandings that get called out by loved ones ☆ Magic, soup, hilariously competitive family game night, a grumpy cottage, townspeople who show up
Elspeth (h) and her sisters are cursed to be magicless until they marry, however being magicless in the Witchlands is illegal so Elspeth pushes her family to move constantly to protect them. The one time she was tempted to put down deeper roots, she was betrayed and it’s left a lasting impression and fear. Draven (H) is talented with magic but has left a career in the city to be the guardian of his younger sister following the deaths of his parents. He feels like he’s constantly failing her though and is filled with doubts on what’s best for her.
These two were so concerned about those they loved, they missed some obvious factors in their loved ones’ needs, alongside what they needed themselves. It’s easy to both like them and want to lay down some truths while smacking them. When Elspeth and Draven meet, sparks fly but they’re the kind of sparks based on animosity and mis-judging each other. As the two continue to come into contact with each other however, attitudes are softened, outer layers are peeked under, and they begin to see how much more the other is made of.
I did feel like the animosity lingered longer than I generally enjoy, just because I prefer to see my main characters in love and solid for longer on page. Even when they began to be more vulnerable with each other and getting intimate, some time spent together occurred off page. A few steamy scenes are on page, don’t fear over that lol. Full emotional vulnerability also comes very late and only after an incident that scares Elspeth and upends Draven.
The supporting characters of Elspeth’s sisters and Draven’s best friend are given depth in preparation for their own stories. There was an open end left here that was puzzling, even as it was clear it’d be answered in the next book. Her mother and his sister are also fleshed out well and in ways that highlighted how both the mains interacted with them, mostly in challenging ways until they learned and grew. Loved the little dragon and some of the townspeople. I did wish a certain side character received a comeuppance but I don’t know if they will later.
The climax felt rushed for me and also kind of obvious. One of the fears through the whole story was resolved so simply and even if involved standing up for what was right, and in a book intended to be cozy, it felt too easy. I also would have loved something between the end and the epilogue a year later. Elspeth and Draven are married in the epilogue and it’s catching the reader up to the return of her magic and where her family is, but what about the actual wedding? What about some dates or swoony moments between the climax and the marriage? There’s a bonus scene the author offers but I haven’t read it yet.
Overall, this did make me smile and it does hit the cozy notes it was aiming for. Would make for a good palette cleanser option.
As a die-hard Pride & Prejudice fangirl, I dove into this book like Mr. Darcy into a lake—shirtless and emotionally repressed. And let me tell you, this story delivered. It gave me all the angsty banter, slow-burn drama, and “will-they-won’t-they” tension I crave—but with the added bonus of some delightfully scandalous sexy times. Jane Austen would clutch her pearls and secretly enjoy every page.
Now, toss in a dash of magic? Yes, please. It wasn’t “summon a dragon and blow up the ballroom” magic, but more of a cozy, cutesy sprinkle—like if a Hallmark movie collided with a cauldron. I felt like I was wrapped in a warm magical blanket, sipping tea while enemies verbally eviscerated each other.
Speaking of enemies, Elspeth and Draven brought the enemies-to-lovers heat like two cats fighting in a sunbeam—scratchy, tense, and weirdly romantic. Their back-and-forth made me want to yell, “JUST KISS ALREADY,” while also appreciating the sheer art of a well-placed insult.
Now, not to be a wet cravat, but I did see a few plot twists coming from a mile away. Like, hello? I’ve read enough romance to spot a “shocking revelation” before it even ties its dramatic cape. But hey, that didn’t ruin the fun—it just made me feel like a smug psychic with good taste.
Bottom line: this is a sweet, spicy, slightly magical P&P remix that had me giggling, swooning, and fanning myself with my Kindle. Would recommend. Preferably with wine.
TEE NEVER MISSES!!! This book has a solid story line, a perfect blend of romance and spicy 🥵. You almost immediately fall in love with the Moonflower family and never want the book to end. I genuinely was SO SAD when I finished the book. And let’s not forget to mention how gorgeous the book cover is! Like wowaz. I stumbled among Tee’s books by pure accident one day and I am SO GLAD I did. Cannot wait to see what the Moonflower sisters will get up to next!
Dull and forgettable. The sisters can't be told apart by much and Elspeth is insufferably self rightous in the most boring way possible (draven is the same lol)... The writing feels incredibly stilted and the first person narration only cements the awkwardness of it all 🤷🏻♀️
Pride and Prejudice aspects in a paranormal settings was just… 🤌🏻💋
Elspeth is trying to be the best older sister she can, making difficult decisions to keep her family secret safe. Draven is struggling to be a brother and parental figure to our mischievous Georgie. (would 100% LOVE a book for her!!) and throughout it all Mama Moonflower is being her meddlesome self, much like the lovely Mrs. Bennet.
The way these two are the missing pieces to one another, yet are both SO stubborn about it, was everything. This is not a fast burn or insta-love by any means. Their first interaction leaves its mark… or well almost does 😉
I have to say that Edgar stole the spotlight every time he appeared on the page! 🐉🧡
I’m so excited for this series and am incredibly thankful to have been given an ARC 🩷🩷
I fell in love with Thistlegrove when I read the Magic and Matchmaking novella, so between that and adoring everything else Tee Harlowe has written, signing up to advance read Potions and Prejudice was a no-brainer!
This is such a cute, cozy tale that draws inspiration from Pride and Prejudice in all the best ways. Elspeth Moonflower and Draven Darkstone instantly dislike each other when they meet. That dislike is fed by bad experiences they had in their pasts.
They eventually decide to set aside their hostilities for the sake of Elspeth's sister and Draven's best friend (who are falling fast for each other). Soon after Elspeth and Draven realize that that line between hate and love is pretty dang thin.
Tee has a knack for writing side characters that are just as compelling as her main characters. The magical cottage, Georgie, Edgar the anxious mini dragon, and Veldar are all standouts. I particularly liked Veldar because he reminds me so much of my late grandma: grumpy and grumbly to cover up the deep well of feelings they have inside.
Give Potions and Prejudice a chance of you love: all things Jane Austen, cozy magical romances, compelling side characters, enemies to lovers, witchy stuff, adorable magical creatures and slow burn romance.
