A Conqueror's Kingdom #2

Of Gods & Gold: A Spicy Fantasy Romance

Rate this book
I’m the thief, but the death god stole everything from my heart, my life, and my humanity— binding me to him forever.

My human life is over. The Sword betrayed me, put a literal knife to his chest, and now I’m supposed to share my new immortal fae life with him as his fated mate? Yeah, keep dreaming, buddy.

As it turns out, you can take the humanity out of the thief, but you can't take the thief out of the, er… immortal. Apparently, the Sword’s castle sits on top of ancient treasure, and I’m more than happy to relieve him of it. No honor amongst thieves and murderers, am I right?

But when my friends— our friends— show up on the run and needing help, I’m pulled deeper into a war that’s raged for centuries between gods and humans. Sola and her minions are burning through our country, leaving a trail of bodies and ruin in their wake.

And when the treasure under his keep finds me first, it ties me to my so-called fated mate more than ever. War threatens at our door, and I need to decide whose side I’m on or say goodbye to my second chance at life.

Fate might try to have her way with me, but chaos has never played by the rules.

1.5⭐️ From the beginning when she wakes up, he’s rude as hell, self-aggrandizing, and somehow mad at her for being upset. HOW THE FXCK YOU MAD AT HER when YOU STABBED AND LIED TO HER?! You didn’t even have to which is CRAZY. The conversation could have went:
“Hey Kyrie, you trust me, right?”
“Sure I trust you Sword.”
“Great so ummm… I can save your life but part of the ritual is that you have to die by my hand.”
“What the fuck?”
“It’s not permanent, you’ll comeback to life and be stronger than you are now.”
“Is that all?”
“No, you’ll also become a fae queen and…. My wife.”
“I’m not sure I’m ready to be a wife”
“Well this is the only way to keep you from dying permanently.”
“Fine.” *joking banter* “I’m ready.”
If that scenario or any rendition of it would have happened before he stabbed her then we would still be on track for this great war. And it would have still taken trust! Why did we have to turn the MMC into a creepy liar?! Why can’t anyone in the book see why she’s pissed off? Then this book tried to convince me that The Sword (Rakhan) is this great guy for saving these fae lives, which is great. He is great TO THEM. But he didn’t apologize for lying. Just excused himself. And it took 1/3 of the book for him to explain anything.
Then at almost the halfway point this man says “if I would have told you the truth you would have died before the curse completed.” BULLSHIT. Because that would have been the first excuse he made as soon as she woke up. I’m sorry but absolutely not. Then the plot took all the way to chapter 30 (85% of the book) for ANY MF PLOT TO PROGRESS!! I stopped caring long into the book. This was a nope for me.

Well, no one is more disappointed than I am that I disliked this so much. I adored the first book. It had spark, charm, and a real emotional core. So maybe this sequel was always going to have a hard time living up to that. Still, I didn’t expect it to feel this rushed and watered down.

This honestly reads more like an overlong epilogue than a full novel. With some trimming and tighter pacing, it might have worked better as an extended ending to book one. As it stands, it feels thin and unfinished.

There are flashes of potential: moments of character growth that almost hit. But they’re buried under a repetitive, sluggish plot and an emotional arc that doesn’t go anywhere. It’s the same conflict over and over: “I’m mad at him for doing something awful, even though I get why,” followed by spice. “I won’t touch her because she thinks I only want her for her body,” followed by another spicy scene. I get that she’s pretending it’s just casual, but it all rings hollow. Where’s the actual connection? Where’s the earned intimacy?

The pacing is too fast, the stakes feel flat, and the romance leans so hard on lust it never gets around to doing any emotional heavy lifting. And they're already in love, so that is shocking. The characters seem stuck in a cycle of miscommunication and unresolved conflict that never truly evolves.

The plot does finally start to move around the 50% mark, but by then, it was too little, too late for me. The story just felt too short and too shallow to deliver on the promise of the first book. I wanted so badly to love this, but it missed the mark in nearly every way.

Thanks so much to the author for the complimentary copy. I’m truly sad this didn’t work for me. This review is voluntary, and all opinions are my own.

The most wanted 2nd book in A Conqueror’s Kingdom duet where all secrets are uncovered and questions are answered.
An enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance that hooks you from page one.
Way more fast paced than the 1st book ,it has a strong, well-developed and enthralling story line with twists and unexpected turns that keep you reading and turning the pages.
Amazing world building that is detailed and imaginative and so well done that you're drawn into a fantastic world unlike any other.
The characters are well developed  , diverse and multilayered.

I think that - objectively speaking - this is not a great fantasy book. There is pretty much no world building a couple of things simply weren’t explained and didn’t make sense (which was basically stated within the story) and it was just too short.
Nonetheless, this had a lot of potential and I was entertained throughout. I mean, I’m an easy girl: Give me a dragon and I’m in…

Anticlimactic

The first was great. It was not perfect, but it had great potential and was fun with an interesting story and world build up. This was so rushed, like the author had ideas but not the patience to adequately get from point A to point B, and gave up. It was a string of scenes held together by barely there plot points. I have been anticipating this release but feel really let down. I really like a lot of Bell's other work and im sad this wasn't at the same level.

This picks up immediately where the previous book ended and oh my god was it worth the wait!!!

The Sword has driven a dagger through Kyrie's heart and the curse is broken but nothing will ever be the same for the two of them again. She is brought back to life and transformed and she is now fated to The Sword who is the God of Death.

One of the things I absolutely loved about this book is that Kyrie has suffered with so many betrayals and changes through her life And you really see her struggling with depression and rage and it's not just passed over. Oftentimes in book. I feel like Have the characters bounce back almost immediately from these really horrific things but not in this. You really see how much work is put into her trust for everyone, even herself.

The groveling in this book was absolutely top tier. She does not let the sword get away with anything he's done and he understands the severity of everything he's caused for her and works to earn her forgiveness and trust. These two have been through so much and I really loved seeing the growth and development between the two of them as individual as as well as together.

An absolutely stunning conclusion!! Worth the wait. If you are at all a fan of fantasy romance, I highly recommend picking this series up. It's so good and you will not regret it!

Thank you so much to the author for an arc of this book!!!

🔥 “I made you into a goddess, and I’m going to be the first to worship you like one.”
~~~
The story kicks off right where the previous one ended and… OH, BOY!
The Sword drove a dagger through Kyrie’s heart and the curse is now broken, but nothing will ever be the same for either of them. Because Kyrie is brought back to life and transformed. Moreover, she’s now married and fated to the Sword, who happens to also be the God of Death. Talk about a complicated relationship…
Nevertheless, I absolutely adored those two together!
I adored Kyrie for being her sassy, reckless, mouthy and chaotic self. And I loved how much strength and resilience she showed when she was dealing with her new reality. Kyrie showed again and again how badass and brave she is (even when she didn’t believe it herself).
And I was truly surprised by The Sword, because, unlike in the previous book, he now had a lot to say and A LOT to grovel. And he more than delivers. That male showed time and time again how much he truly and deeply loves his wife and that he’s prepared to wait for eternity for her forgiveness.
Even with all the tension and lost trust, their banters and bickering were top notch and their chemistry was off-the-charts! And the passionate moments they shared were so hot and I couldn’t get enough. Kyrie and Arek were truly meant to be together!
But even with Kyrie’s curse broken, this is not the end. Because Sola and her worshippers are wreaking havoc through the whole country. Everyone needs to work together because all of the lives in Heska depend on stopping the malevolent goddess. And there are DRAGONS! Now, everything culminates into one final trial that will test the strength of The Sword and Kyrie’s bond and their fate in each other.
Overall, the story was a phenomenal series finale, filled with action, danger, drama, humor, difficult decisions, passion and amazing characters.
I couldn’t put it down and absolutely loved every single page of it!
"I want all of you... Every last fucking smile, every laugh and sarcastic remark. I want every kiss, every breath, and every sweet cry of pleasure I can wring from you. I want your fire and your anger and your love and kindness, because Kyrie, you are the only woman for me. You took everything I ever wanted and made it so much better, because it's you."
4.5 stars
After the cliffy January left us on from book 1, I could not wait to dive back into this fantastic story as Kyrie leads us with her sarcastic edge and unrelenting spirit. I loved the deeper emotions we got to experience from both Kyrie and the Sword in this sequel; both were dealing with more complicated feelings of guilt, betrayal, remorse, and hatred because of what they sacrificed previously, and I really enjoyed seeing them face those sentiments head-on. Even though the story was fast-paced, I felt like it held the perfect amount of action, drama, romance, and angst to keep the story moving and give us a satisfying and thrilling ending. This book also contained January's signature humor and sweeping romance, and I cannot wait to have the gorgeous special editions on my shelf!🖤
Tropes: enemies-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine, fated mates, brooding but contrite hero, sarcastic heroine, forced proximity, forbidden love, hurt/comfort, hate-to-love-you, meddling gods, he falls first, ancient prophecy, found family, STEAMY🔥
After The Sword's betrayal, Kyrie wakes up changed. She's immortal and now permanently bonded to The Sword as his mate. Kyrie refuses to just allow him his happily ever after, and she soon rouses an ancient being that binds her more thoroughly to The Sword than ever before. When the goddess Sola makes her move to kill all of the elves and give herself unspeakable power, Kyrie has a choice to trust herself and the changes that she's undergone or get revenge for all The Sword has done.
Of Gods and Gold is a satisfying conclusion to the story begun in Of Sword and Silver. Kyrie has endured many betrayals and changes, and she takes quite a bit of time struggling with depression and rage. These emotions are not waved off, but rather explored, which I very much enjoyed. Too often in books, characters just shake off their emotional distress, which is unrealistic. This book also spent a lot more time with The Sword attempting to repair the damage he wrought on their mate-hood, giving an interesting view on how to repair a relationship. Overall, the story delved deeply into the emotional aspects of what was happening, creating a very impactful read.
A thoroughly enjoyable and gratifying conclusion.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is an ARC review. Thank you to January Bell for a copy of her book.
Of Gods & Gold is the much awaited sequel to Of Sword & Silver. I was really looking forward to this one as I enjoyed the first book quite a bit. Of Sword & Silver was the first book that I had ever read by Bell and I was hooked.
I enjoyed the continuation of the Sword and Kyrie's story as the first book ended on a large cliffhanger. Much of our questions at the end of the first book were resolved quickly in book two.
The first book I felt was story first, romance second. Of Gods & Gold, I felt was slightly reversed with more focus on the spice than the storyline. Kyrie, who had seemed so driven, confident and sure of herself in the first book, was paralyzed by her anger at the Sword for what he'd done to her. She went back and forth so much while the rest of the storyline faltered slightly.
The last 10-15% of the story brought the storyline together but it felt a bit rushed. I really loved the Sword and Kyrie and would have liked to see them work together more to resolve the Sola conflict.
Overall, I liked the story, I just really loved the first book.
Much like book one this book is hilarious. God tier banter and wit are all over these pages. Don’t get me wrong there are still moments that brought tears to my eyes but overall I laughed my way through this book. The dynamic between the Sword and Kyrie is perfection and the spice was so dang hot! I love the vulnerability and growth of the characters. January does an incredible job describing the pits that depression pulls you into. I loved the new characters but the return of the crew was definitely my favorite! This book was so satisfying and ended beautifully. Lately it’s felt like fantasy books are long and drawn out with no purpose and this is not like that. Every page is purposeful and nothing dragged even for a second. Highly recommend this duology if you are wanting a funny, epic fantasy book.
3.5, maybe? Audio book switched up the voices from the first and I didn’t like. But the 🌶️ was good, the story? I dunno. It dragged a lot with Kyrie’s anger and Arek’s guilt, like…okay we get it, but the ending was satisfying. I think I could say I enjoyed it when I finally things started actually happening and when I could get past the fact that neither voice matched the character they played at all. But it lost a lot of the spark from the first one, and I’m not sure if it was because of the voices or because of Kyrie being just angry all the time. Though I did like a few finer details at the very end of it, and I found those redeeming.
All in all, we did get good bratty steam so can’t complain 😉
Of Gods and Gold is the second book in the Conqueror's Kingdom series. It's a relatively short and spicy romance that wraps up Kyrie and The Sword's (or whatever you want to call him) story. This duet could be just one book, so I recommend getting both and planning to read straight through since book 2 is so short. I love the banter between the two main characters, and Kyrie's attitude is fun to read. I would have enjoyed a longer series set in this world, but their story is wrapped up. Maybe a story about different characters set in the same world? We can hope because I enjoyed this book far more than January Bell's alien books. 5 stars!
I was so excited when I started reading this book. My expectations were high and I wasn’t disappointed.
The cliff from the last book was answered straight away and it was a great way to start this book.
This book contained all emotions from hope to despair.
I loved the relationship between The Sword and Kyrie. I loved her cheekiness and pluck, however Kyrie is not one to suffer fools gladly and boy, does she make The Sword work for it.
This was a fun and frolicking story that was interesting, fun and engrossing from start to finish!
4.5 ⭐️ I’ve been anxiously waiting for this book to come out after that cliffhanger ending in Of Sword and Silver. Kyrie really goes through the wringer in this book which I think we all expected. Good thing she’s a fighter. Arek grovels like crazy and deservedly so! So much betrayal and redemption to work through but totally worth it. Arek and Kyrie have great chemistry and some hot moments together. There was a bit of a lull in part of the book where I felt the storyline drug out a little but the book picked up and the ending was good. This duet series was overall fun and entertaining.
Book 2 of A Conqueror’s Kingdom by January Bell is Of God’s & Gold, a wonderfully magical mix of fae and human. Kylie awakens changed after having been stabbed in the heart by her fae lover Harlan, god of death, also known as The Sword and originally Ariel. The battle between the evil goddess Sola and the last of the fae led by The Sword will come to a head as Kylie makes the ultimate sacrifice. Who will win?
Stop the press, rewind the recordings and start all over again! Listened to the audiobook and what a disappointment from the first book. How can the MC have no accent in the first book but now speak with a British accent in the second? It’s not something you can miss like a miss pronounced word, it’s a freaking accent. It changes the whole vibe and character. If I was the author I wouldn’t have released until corrected.
I was sooo happy when this one finally came out! I waited over a year until book 2 in this duet came out.
Unfortunately I didn’t like it as much as book 1. It all felt rushed and the lust after everything that happened was almost instant again. The writing tho was easy and I flew through this book. It also felt really good to be in this world again and the characters felt like coming home!
First book was better
Overall the book was pretty good however I became irritated with Kyrie because she just continued to whine and complain about what the sword did to her even though she knew the reason why he did it. I really just wanted her to get over it and stop complaining already. I also felt like the confrontation with solo was a little anti-climatic.
It was not as well rounded as the first book. I enjoyed the way it ended but felt Kyrie held onto what happen and it just made me struggle through the book a bit. I also think the Sword’s character was not written to the same as before. I did enjoy the book just felt that it was a bit rushed.
The first book had me slightly more enthralled, as it felt a little more adventurous, but still glad the story got finished and we got to see our favourite characters, along with a couple new ones!
