The Ages of Malice is a fantasy/supernatural/religious thriller series full of bombastic action, incredible characters and incredible plot twists.Following A PORTION OF MALICE, A MEASURE OF RHYME and THE EMBERS OF SHADOW we now reach THE TEMPESTS OF TIME.
The ending of book three was an absolute shock so I didn't know what to expect with this one.

THE TEMPESTS OF TIME is more surreal. Emery and Rhyme are still in a heap of danger. Cain has big plans for Rhyme and seems to have achieved most of his aims. The world's first murderer and biblical immortal is a world power. Emperor of Imperium.

Emery Merrick was supposed to be working for Cain as official biographer but is that job even needed any more? Emery appears to have fallen into some kind of coma. Is that Cain's doing?

Emery and Rhyme may be physically together but they've never been further apart.
Emery is experiencing what? A new reality? Hallucinations? A dimensional tour? Entrapment in time? Demons and pain.
We've met angels, demons and immortals in this series. Enter Iblis. The original Adversary. Satan by another name.
If you're going on a wild surreal mind trip of a journey why not have the devil as your tour guide?

Experiencing the lives of others Emery's soul is ripped through the temporal maelstrom. Can he find a way back and will Rhyme and her companions be able to keep him safe.

Meanwhile, forces converge upon a temple in Jerusalem including Longinus the immortal Roman and Igneus the immortal Jew.
And pulling the strings is the anti-christ. Cain.

An unexpected direction for this fourth book in the series and again we're left with a cliffhanger and many more questions as the AGES OF MALICE will continue in the forthcoming book five.

Yeah, Lloyd has done it again. It is extremely difficult to condense thoughts in a meaningful way with an object of reducing them to a review but I will make an effort nonetheless.

This book is one of a few books that until you finish it, it remains active in one's mind as you wish to proffer help, aid and sometimes guidance to mostly Emery. It is a thriller, dark fantasy spliced methodically with philosophy.

The book artfully explore themes of freewill, destiny and redemption. It is grounded on biblical and mythological structure. The author skillfully explore the supernatural, weaving the present in the context of futuristic framework.

The book is constantly engaging, suspenseful and culturally plural in design thereby offering the reader with the cultural diversity of man in the world that has taught him that difference in race is justification for love and hate.

The relationship of Emery and Rhyme is grounded on pure love but brutally frustrated by Cain who has undying love for the woman whose heart is already with another person. The excessive use of power, manipulation and fear to win over Rhyme who accepts the arrangement out of love to safe the man she honestly love is beyond comprehension in this world of greed and avarice. It is indeed pedagogical in the manner in which it demonstrates that genuine love doesn't need to be premised on material and consumption.

The character of Cain is the most complex with use of power, force, money heavily weaved with the supernatural that is beyond comprehension of man.

Immersing one in these series of the age of Malice, leaves a reader much more empowered in the thought provoking dynamic that effortlessly impact one's paradigm and outlook of life because I will argue that Cain remains alive and active today in multiple fractal manifestations throughout the world in literally every society.

I cannot recommend this book enough, I encourage anyone willing to grow, learn and expand their horizons to grab the entire series and devour pearls of wisdom embedded therein.

I thank you

The Tempest of Time is the fourth instalment in the Ages of Malice series by Lloyd Jeffries, and opens to a world teetering on the brink - political unrest, religious fervor, and supernatural whispers all converging into a sense of inevitable collapse. The first act sets the tone with a shocking event that fractures fragile alliances and forces key players into motion.
We are strapped onto a rollercoaster that thrusts us into a world where history, prophecy, and human frailty collide in spectacular fashion. This instalment picks up the saga’s momentum with a storyline that is both epic in scope, yet liberally sprinkled with intimate, emotional depth.
At its core, the plot revolves around the escalating chaos unleashed by forces that blur the line between divine will and human ambition. The threads weave through multiple timelines and perspectives, revealing long-buried backstories that deepen our understanding of the heroes, as well as the morally ambiguous figures who shape the fate of nations.
The pacing is a masterclass in tension-building — moments of quiet revelation are quickly swallowed by waves of action, political intrigue, and supernatural dread. Mr. Jeffries doesn’t just move the plot forward; he layers it, allowing past events to echo into the present. While the stakes are apocalyptic, the heart of the novel lies in the characters’ private struggles - their betrayals, loyalties, and impossible choices. This dynamic definitely kept me invested in not just the action and adventure, but in why it all really mattered.
By the final chapters, the plot has tightened into a storm of revelations and consequences, leaving just enough unanswered to propel the saga forward while delivering a satisfying, if unsettling, resolution to this installment’s central conflicts.
Can’t wait to get my hands on ‘Ages of Malice’ (Book V)!
Happy reading! 📚✨

Liturgies of the broken time

Lloyd Jeffries' The Tempests of Time: Ages of Malice, Book IV delivers a vertiginous fusion of theological thriller and metaphysical horror, heightening the mythic scope of his ongoing saga. With a gifted hand, Jeffries plunges readers into a time-fractured narrative in which temporal dislocation is both thematic device and narrative engine. The tale resumes amid apocalyptic fallout, propelling central figures Emery Merrick and Rhyme Carter across volatile historical terrains haunted by ancient curses, ruptured loyalties, and spectral voices from beyond. The stakes transcend personal survival; history itself becomes a malleable weapon wielded by unseen forces, where salvation and damnation blur into speculative uncertainty. Prophecy does not merely unfold—it convulses, reshaping the moral architecture of the series with each successive revelation. Jeffries’s prose is taut, unsentimental, and unfailingly kinetic, pushing the momentum forward with cinematic urgency and episodic peril.

Stylistically, the novel augments the pitch of narrative intensity of previous instalments of the series. Where prior volumes built foundations in theological mystery and psychological tension, The Tempests of Time escalates those elements into full existential freefall. The author experiments boldly with structure, interspersing dream-sequences and historical interludes that enrich character development and destabilise reader assumptions. Particularly effective is the metafictional humour—Emery’s retrospective asides and self-aware summaries offer a tonal counterweight to the surrounding despair, momentarily lifting the density of the narrative without sacrificing its poignancy. The treatment of religion remains capacious and pluralistic, resisting dogmatism while leveraging archetypal symbols from multiple traditions.

What ultimately distinguishes The Tempests of Time is its synthesis of visceral thrill and conceptual depth. Jeffries interrogates destiny, agency, and historical determinism not through abstract dialogue but through the trials of vividly rendered protagonists. The interlacing of cosmic horror and eschatological speculation situates the novel firmly within a tradition that spans Miltonic ambition and contemporary genre fiction, while remaining highly accessible. This is a novel that does not flinch. As the series approaches its climax, Jeffries seems less interested in resolution than in expanding the very dimensions of the narrative world he has so painstakingly built. The result is a restless, unsettling, and fiercely imaginative new Sci-Fi must-read novel for genre enthusiasts!

The Tempests of Time: Ages of Malice, Book IV by Lloyd Jeffries plunges readers into a chaotic world where time itself unravels. Gets caught in a war that involves Cain, the first murderer from the Bible, who is now an immortal and evil force. As Emery and his ally Rhyme Carter navigate time-shattered landscapes—from ancient wars to dystopian futures—they grapple with apocalyptic visions and cryptic messages. Haunted by the possibility that they are either saviors or pawns, they battle demonic forces, cursed memories, and the manipulative schemes of a secret society. As they deal with betrayal, fear, and intense fights, Emery and Rhyme race against time and fate. This story combines supernatural horror and a thrilling adventure, mixing biblical narratives, cosmic dread, and profound reflections.
The book’s fast pace, striking horror, and deep themes make it an exciting addition to the Ages of Malice series. Lloyd Jeffries masterfully combines dark fantasy, horror, and philosophical inquiry in The Tempests of Time: Ages of Malice, Book IV. The cover is eye-catching and captures the intense, chaotic energy of the story within. The plot is complex and gripping, seamlessly weaving together mythological themes, psychological depth, and raw, brutal action. The story plunges you into a fractured world where time itself becomes both a weapon and a curse.

What makes this book stand out is how it balances intense action with thoughtful introspection. Emery and Rhyme’s relationship adds a human touch amid the chaos. Their bond feels genuine and layered, giving the story an emotional anchor. The supporting characters like Bill provide humor, lightening the mood without breaking the story’s dark tone. Cain’s presence as an enigmatic and menacing force keeps the tension high, and his unpredictable behavior adds depth to the plot.

The writing style is bold and unflinching. The language, though powerful, can sometimes feel overwhelming with its relentless pace and vivid, graphic descriptions. At times, it almost feels like too much, making some scenes harder to digest. Still, the bold narrative and emotional honesty make the experience worthwhile. Jeffries doesn’t hold back, pushing the story and characters into dark, uncharted territory.

This book will appeal to readers who love intense, thought-provoking dark fantasy with a philosophical twist. If you’re drawn to stories that explore morality, fate, and inner demons while still delivering high-stakes action and an eerie atmosphere, this one’s for you. The Tempests of Time is fearless, imaginative, and unapologetically intense.

Reading mystery

Reading The Tempests of Time felt like being caught in a storm I didn’t want to escape. From start to finish, I was pulled into a world that is eerie, emotional, and brimming with tension. I never felt comfortable in this story, and I mean that in the best possible way. Just when I thought I had it figured out, everything twisted, forcing me to rethink what I believed about the characters and their motivations.
What stood out to me most was the emotional intensity behind everything. The characters aren’t easy or obvious, they’re conflicted, raw, and messy in a way that felt honest. Some of them unnerved me, others I rooted for with my whole heart, but all of them felt alive and deeply human.
The setting and mood are perfectly matched to the story’s darker themes. There’s a sense of creeping dread and beauty in every scene, and the attention to detail made the world feel vivid and real, even at its most surreal. I could feel the heat of desperation, the weight of fear, and the strange calm of hope when it flickered through.
This book isn’t afraid to dive deep into uncomfortable places, and that’s exactly what made it such a rewarding read for me. If you’re into stories that blend the supernatural with emotional grit and constant surprises, this one delivers.

The true feeling of power through a book

This book resonated deeply with me, blending mythological and religious themes with the intensity of mystery and action. It reminded me of The Odyssey, but with fresh and thought-provoking elements that explore battles beyond our world and the internal struggles of a warrior forced to weigh love, danger, and survival.
Jeffries’ narrative is dense and immersive, perfectly mirroring the stormy and chaotic journey of Emery and Rhyme. The way their fates intertwine is masterfully executed, with both characters facing the most harrowing moments of their lives. The novel doesn’t just tell a story; it forces readers to confront faith, doubt, and the contradictions of human nature. Morality is constantly put to the test, making the experience deeply personal and unsettling. The dark, oppressive atmosphere is so vividly crafted that at times, it feels like you can feel the chill of Hell itself.
By the time I reached the final pages, I was left with a profound sense of unease and awe. The image of Merrick in the mirror lingered in my mind long after I closed the book, proof of Jeffries' ability to create hauntingly vivid scenes that embed themselves in the reader’s consciousness.
If you’re looking for a book that challenges your mind, stirs your fears, and explores the contradictions of human nature, this one delivers on every level.

Dark, twisty, and impossible to put down

This is a mind bending plunge into chaos, time fractures, and the unsettling question of whether destiny is a gift or a curse. This isn’t just a time travel thriller, it’s a psychological labyrinth that tests both its characters’ sanity and the reader’s expectations.
What makes this novel shine is how Jeffries blends large scale chaos with intensely personal horror. Emery and Rhyme aren’t just running through history, they’re running through their own unraveling minds. The narrative asks sharp questions about agency, fate, and manipulation. Another strength is how Jeffries balances horror and action without letting one overpower the other. The supernatural elements, demonic faces, splintered memories, shadowy societies, are not just spooky window dressing, they’re crucial to exploring deeper themes of power, corruption, and the fragility of perception. Fans who love layered plots and intellectual thrillers will appreciate how the novel doesn’t spoon feed answers but lets uncertainty linger.
Jeffries writes with cinematic urgency, but there’s a literary sharpness beneath the surface. The pacing is relentless, yet the philosophical weight behind the characters’ choices gives the story a gravitas that sticks with you after you turn the last page.

Lloyd Jeffries’ The Tempests of Time is a ferocious, genre-defying descent into temporal chaos, laced with existential horror, brutal introspection, and the unraveling threads of destiny itself. From the very first page, Jeffries plunges readers into a world splintering at the seams—a fractured reality where time is no longer linear but cracked wide open, bleeding myth, memory, and madness into one another.

At the heart of this fourth installment in the Ages of Malice series is Emery Merrick, a man hurled through history by a cursed stranger and ensnared in a dark web of cosmic manipulation. Each time-shattered setting—from ancient battlegrounds to ashen futures—echoes with his name, as though fate itself is fixated on his ruin. But this isn’t just a story of time travel; it’s a story of torment, transformation, and the terrifying realization that the enemy may not just be the world collapsing around you—but the slow deterioration of your own mind.

Jeffries writes with a cinematic ferocity that never lets up. The pacing is merciless but never careless—every chapter is a necessary beat in a symphony of suspense, dread, and revelation. One moment you're dodging assassins from impossible angles; the next, you’re knee-deep in philosophical inquiries about the nature of choice and reality. What anchors the mayhem is the emotional and psychological weight carried by the characters, particularly Emery, whose fragmented psyche becomes both battlefield and mirror for the reader.

And then there’s Rhyme Carter—a character who continues to defy the usual tropes. She's more than a companion or a love interest; she’s a stabilizing force in a narrative that constantly threatens to unravel. Rhyme brings clarity where there’s confusion, compassion where there’s horror, and her presence is vital to grounding the novel’s most intense philosophical themes in something deeply human.

Jeffries excels in walking the line between grandeur and intimacy. The scale of the conflict—cosmic, ancient, apocalyptic—is counterbalanced by deeply personal moments of reflection and raw vulnerability. The horror elements aren’t just terrifying for shock value; they’re laced with psychological depth and moral ambiguity. There’s an almost Lovecraftian sense of dread at times, not just because of what the characters face, but because of what it all means. Are they meant to change the future—or merely reenact a script written long before they were born?

The prose itself oscillates between savage clarity and haunting lyricism. One moment it's sharp enough to cut; the next, it glows with an eerie beauty. Jeffries’ language pulses with urgency, yet it never sacrifices weight for speed. Themes of sacrifice, identity, memory, and manipulation ripple through every chapter, begging readers to not only keep up, but to engage, to question, to feel.

The Tempests of Time doesn’t just tell a story—it disorients, devastates, and dares you to look deeper. It’s a brutal meditation on free will and fate dressed in the robes of an action-horror epic. For those drawn to intelligent, unrelenting fiction that lingers like a shadow in your thoughts, this is not a book to read lightly—it’s one to surrender to completely.

Exciting!!

This book is part of a truly mind-blowing saga that is bold, profound, and utterly immersive. It quickly pulls you in, throwing you into an apocalyptic scenario that strips its characters down to their most raw and visceral selves. The story doesn’t just showcase the battle between good and evil, it forces you to question the thin line separating the two.
Jeffries does an excellent job handling multiple narratives and weaving them together seamlessly through his characters. Emery faces the horrors of Hell, confronting his past, his beliefs, and the moral weight of his choices. Meanwhile, Rhyme embodies pure fury and resistance, injecting relentless energy into the story. Yet, as with everything in this book, appearances can be deceiving.
The novel’s greatest strength lies in its ability to tackle complex existential themes while maintaining a gripping, fast-paced narrative. The blend of action, emotion, and deep philosophical reflection feels natural, never forced. Jeffries doesn’t shy away from life’s biggest questions, offering not just an adrenaline-fueled story but also moments of introspection that linger long after the last page.
I sincerely hope this saga continues because it has been an incredible ride.

Amazing book.

Lloyd Jeffries delivers a story that isn’t afraid to rip apart comfort zones. Every page feels like walking a tightrope between revelation and ruin.
What I found so compelling was the sheer intensity of it all. The emotional weight behind Emery Merrick’s journey is staggering. His descent into a world of demons, lost identity, and incomprehensible truths is not just harrowing—it’s transformative. The sense of unraveling is so real that I often had to pause just to process the gravity of what he was experiencing. And Rhyme Carter’s arc? Fierce, unapologetic, and deeply moving. Her resistance feels less like rebellion and more like survival on a soul-deep level.
Jeffries’ writing style also stands out. It’s bold and unapologetic, rich with imagery and tension. The world he’s built feels timeless and terrifying both mythic and modern. And the pacing? Relentless. Every chapter feels like a new revelation or reckoning. There are no lulls, no safe harbors, just momentum and consequences.
This book is a fierce, unshakable experience that burrowed under my skin and stayed there. It doesn’t just entertain, it transforms.

In the fourth book of the Ages of Malice series, author Lloyd Jeffries has picked up the story right where book three left off and, let me tell you readers, that this is one incredible book. Since I have had the pleasure of reviewing this series from the very beginning and, having loved everything about it, I can say with complete honesty that The Tempests of Time is Lloyd Jeffries’s best book so far and that is saying a lot since each one has been absolutely riveting.

At the start of The Tempests of Time, the entire world is falling apart with some of said world completely destroyed from a nuclear attack. Emery Merrick, our favorite protagonist, is still working for Cain although he spends a great deal of this book in some type of a “coma” that the other characters cannot seem to understand or fix. In the meantime, while Rhyme is trying to figure out how to help Emery, her ex-husband and the man she will always love, she also has to figure out how to spoil her evil husband’s plans for world domination. While Emery is on his own journey, for real or in his mind – I will let the reader decide – Rhyme attempts to save everyone with the help of some old acquaintances and some new friends. Unfortunately, along the way, she learns that not everyone she trusts is truly a friend.

While the storytelling in The Tempests of Time is, as always, exciting and fast-paced, this book gives readers a different type of plotline as we spend a lot of time in Emery’s dreams delving into the backstories of many of the characters. It will really change your outlook on a lot of the individuals in the story and who they really are. I was stunned by so much of the story and felt that this author has really outdone himself. The things we learn about many characters, both the good and the bad ones, make each of the personalities stand out even more to the reader and leave you wondering what is next for them.

If you have been a fan since the beginning, and I certainly hope this is the case, you will know that the books are based in religion. One of the things I enjoy the most is that the author is able to write and present all of this religious background in an unbiased and very appealing way. Mr. Jeffries gives a look into recognizable religious happenings that does not focus on one specific religion but rather a “multireligious” view. The writing is superb and the storyline absolutely thrilling.

One thing I would recommend to all is that, if you have not already done so, you read the first three books in the series. There is so much going on in these stories and, as a reader, you will be denying yourself a lot of excitement and understanding of what is going if you attempt to start in the middle.

I can assure you that this is a series that is well worth taking the time to read from the very beginning. From captivating characters (both mortal and immortal) to historical and biblical tales to spellbinding action, The Tempests of Time has everything you will want in a book. I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see what comes next for these characters.

Quill says: The Tempests of Time is an incredible addition to a very powerful series and should not be missed. The only thing at this point that could make the Ages of Malice series better would be if it could go on forever!

A solid story!

By the time I reached The Tempests of Time, I was already invested in the world Lloyd Jeffries created, but nothing prepared me for how intense and multilayered this fourth installment would be. It’s a stunning continuation of the Ages of Malice series, with even higher stakes, sharper emotional edges, and a creeping sense of doom that never quite lets you breathe.
The characters only deepen in complexity. Emery’s unraveling is painful to watch but impossible to ignore, and Rhyme continues to surprise me with her grit and intensity. Their stories don’t just add tension, they add heart.
I also love how immersive and grounded the world feels, despite its supernatural scope. Jeffries doesn’t rely on spectacle alone; instead, he uses detail and atmosphere to build something that feels both ancient and immediate. What makes this series so impressive is it evolves.
If you like your fiction layered, fast-paced, and emotionally charged, this book is absolutely worth diving into.

Epic Good vs. Evil

This book is the fourth in the series, creating an epic good verses evil story. With characters from the previous books it is easy to follow the thread of this story. However, the author throws in quite a few surprises, showing what is on the surface is not always what is underneath.

This series is about making difficult choices and how sometimes the choice between right and wrong isn't clear.

At one point, the main character journeys to hell where he witnesses other characters' histories and gains understanding of their motivations.

He has to reflect on his own motivations and history and decide whether his own heart is in the right place.

The book is filled with action, suspense, and lots of tug of war between good and evil. Great book for those who enjoy supernatural, religious debate, and Armageddon scenarios.

Ages of Malice Book 4 takes everything the series has built and pushes it to another level. The story is bold, intense, and spiritually charged in a way that makes you stop and reflect on your own life. Lloyd Jeffries continues to write with incredible depth. Every chapter feels like a battle between light and darkness, not just in the world but inside the characters themselves.

I love how this book expands the universe while still keeping the emotional weight of the characters. Cain, Rhyme, and the forces they face feel more human and more vulnerable than ever. The writing is sharp, the pacing is fast, and the themes are powerful. It is one of those books that makes you question who you are and who you are becoming.

This is a strong continuation of the series and a must-read for anyone who has followed the Ages of Malice journey from the beginning.

This book masterfully weaves biblical, historical, and supernatural elements into a compelling narrative centered around Emery Merrick, an imperfect yet captivating protagonist whose journey through immortality keeps the reader fully engaged. Supporting characters like Rhyme, with her resilience and intelligence; Bill, a laid-back yet deeply wise figure; and Houdini, a loyal and loving pet, enrich the story further. Even the villains are layered and thought-provoking, challenging the reader to question whether they are truly evil or simply trying to survive in their world.

The novel's central theme revolves around free will and the ripple effects of the characters’ actions rather than just their consequences. The seamless integration of biblical prophecies, historical events, and a foreboding vision of the future is nothing short of brilliant. Redemption plays a significant role in the story, reflecting real-life struggles with morality, choice, and consequence. The portrayal of humanity’s eternal battle between light and darkness feels raw and deeply authentic.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this book is its unconventional writing style. Instead of a straightforward narrative, the author structures it more like a recorded journal, complete with pacing shifts and tonal changes that immerse the reader fully in the experience. The emotional depth of Emery and Rhyme’s relationship, marked by hope, love, longing, and regret, adds an intimate layer to the story.

Cain’s character is particularly striking. I’ve seen many interpretations of Cain, but this is one of the most compelling. The author’s use of enclosed symbols (“<>”) to indicate physical and emotional cues enhances the storytelling, making it easier to visualize scenes and feel the characters' emotions. This technique encouraged me to re-read passages, allowing for a deeper and more active engagement with the story.

Ultimately, the book feels deeply personal, as if Emery himself is speaking directly to the reader. It is a fascinating, thought-provoking read that blends rich storytelling with an immersive, unconventional narrative style. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a complex and emotionally resonant story.

The Tempests of Time, the highly anticipated fourth book in Lloyd Jeffries’ Ages of Malice series, delivers another intense and action-filled chapter in this epic fantasy saga. Like its predecessors, this novel weaves biblical themes into a gripping narrative, exploring Heaven, Hell, God, the Devil, and the Antichrist in unconventional and unexpected ways. Readers can expect a fast-paced, dramatic story filled with subverted tropes, relentless action, and moments of brutal violence.

As with the previous books, The Tempests of Time maintains a breakneck pace and an intense atmosphere. The story constantly pushes the boundaries of good and evil, keeping the reader on a rollercoaster of emotions and shocking revelations. While this relentless escalation is thrilling, I personally would have preferred moments of stillness, more reflective phases to balance out the chaos. The series thrives on an ongoing state of crisis, which works well for fans who love high-stakes action but may feel overwhelming for those who prefer a more varied tempo.

This is not a book to dive into without reading the previous installments. The complex worldbuilding and character arcs build upon earlier books, making it difficult for new readers to fully grasp the depth of the story. If this book intrigues you, I strongly recommend starting with A Portion of Malice (Book 1) to truly appreciate the journey.
For those who enjoy fast-paced, dramatic storytelling with deep biblical and philosophical themes, this book is a thrilling and thought-provoking read.

Jeffries drops you into a world completely off the rails. The Antichrist, Cain, has taken over, leaving behind a post-apocalyptic wasteland. At the center of it all is Emery Merrick, an ex-junkie journalist who, despite his newfound immortality, is drowning in suffering. The sense of entrapment is palpable; no escape, no relief, just relentless chaos. The action is explosive, with car chases, supernatural battles, and moments so intense they feel cinematic.
The writing is immersive and raw, making you feel the torment, the fear, and the sheer madness of this world. Jeffries doesn’t just describe hellish imagery; he makes you live in it. But beyond the brutality, there’s depth. The book grapples with fate, free will, and the fragility of human nature, forcing you to question what’s real and what’s illusion.
The characters are flawed and complex, making them feel painfully real. Emery is broken, haunted by his past and struggling with addiction and guilt, even with his immortality. Rhyme, his ex-wife, is fierce but burdened by her own demons. And Cain, he’s terrifying yet disturbingly charismatic, making it eerily believable why people would follow him.
This isn’t a light read. It’s dense, chaotic, and overwhelming at times, with Jeffries throwing everything at you all at once. But if you crave dark, thought-provoking stories that push boundaries and challenge your perspective, this book delivers. Just be ready for an intense, unfiltered ride.

The storytelling is immersive, fast-paced, and filled with unexpected twists that keep the reader fully engaged. The narrative is rich in symbolism and allegories, adding layers of depth that make the reading experience both thought-provoking and entertaining. Part of the joy in reading this novel comes from uncovering these hidden meanings.

The characters are what truly elevate this book beyond just words on a page. Emery Merrick is a protagonist who feels deeply human, making it easy to empathize with his struggles. His journey is challenging yet inspiring, while Rhyme remains an enigmatic and darker presence, adding further intrigue to the story. Their dynamic makes for a fascinating contrast, drawing the reader deeper into the narrative.

Lloyd Jeffries’ ability to craft vivid settings and gripping situations is exceptional. The world he builds is so well-described that it feels tangible, making for an incredibly immersive experience. Another remarkable aspect of this book is its consistency with the rest of the series. Even as the story expands, it remains coherent and true to the saga’s overarching themes, ensuring that both longtime fans and new readers can fully appreciate its impact.

Lloyd Jeffries is back with “The Tempests of Time,” the fourth installment in his award-winning Ages of Malice psychological thriller series. This highly anticipated novel picks up right where “Embers of Shadow,” the third book in the series, left off—delivering unexpected twists, deeper character backstories, and thought-provoking conflicts that challenge everything readers think they know.

Typical of Jeffries’s work, each saga about the end times brings further destruction and mind-blowing revelations. In this narrative, some situations remain unchanged: Emery continues in Cain’s employment while Rhyme attempts the seemingly impossible task of thwarting her evil husband and his plans with the assistance of allies old and unexpected. Jeffries’ skills lie in presenting a seemingly predetermined storyline and result in incorporating unforeseen and last-minute changes in the form of altered states of being, mindsets, and shifting surroundings that deliver a new, exciting, and engaging record of a fictional story with realistic implications. “The Tempests of Time” presents a slightly altered storyline compared to the previous tales, allowing the reader to discover more backstories of the equally beloved and hated characters.

As a religiously based thriller, Jeffries challenges the readers’ ability to think critically throughout the storyline. The series’ narrative is predominantly explained and presented from the “villain’s” point of view; however, with the inclusion of more from the “hero’s” side, it inadvertently allows readers to remain neutral on their literary and cognitive journey or choose a side based on the evolving details. Jeffries demonstrates open-mindedness in the narrative because he does not adhere to a single religion or denomination. Instead, he offers a multireligious interpretation of well-known Biblical and religious events. From a literary standpoint, the story follows a familiar tone to its predecessors with the same trigger warnings, including language, drugs, violence, politics, and sex. From a religious standpoint, I suppose it’s every reader for themselves.

I enjoyed the altered storyline in this narrative and appreciated how it allowed me to learn more about the characters. The introduction of some comedic relief helped lighten certain scenes. Even though I have to wait for the release of each story to the public, once I get my hands on the next one, the familiarity and comfort help me fly through the pages. While Jeffries provides enough context to inform readers of past events, starting with the first book is recommended to fully appreciate the character development and overall impact of the series. Readers who enjoy a story that captivates their attention, and those who appreciate the profound, personal implications, will devour “The Tempests of Time” and the entire Ages of Malice series.

Lloyd Jeffries’ The Tempests of Time, the fourth entry in the Ages of Malice series, is a wild, relentless ride through apocalyptic landscapes, theological conflicts, and the clash of immortals. The novel follows Emery Merrick, a former journalist whose life is tangled with ancient prophecies, political upheaval, and the enigmatic, menacing figure of Cain, the biblical first murderer, now a world-dominating force. The story unfolds with unrelenting chaos: nuclear annihilation, supernatural torment, desperate love, and an ever-looming battle between forces greater than humanity can comprehend.

Jeffries’ writing is sharp, cinematic, and unafraid to dive deep into the grotesque. Some passages feel like a fever dream, especially in the opening where Emery is trapped in a visceral, never-ending cycle of pain and resurrection, torn apart by demons only to be made whole again. The horror is relentless, the descriptions unflinching: “They rip out all my teeth… My mouth fills again with teeth”. It’s brutal, but it lets you know that this story doesn’t do half-measures. While some moments feel excessive in their grimness, they also carry an intensity that makes the story hard to look away from.

Yet, for all its darkness, The Tempests of Time isn’t just about suffering. Jeffries weaves in biting humor and deep philosophical musings. Bill, a stoner with a surprising depth, offers bizarre but compelling insights on existence: “Ever notice how everything starts with nothing?” he ponders. “Take Emery, an artist with the written word, who stares at the nothingness of a blank page.” This contrast between absurdity and existential weight is one of the book’s strengths. Meanwhile, Cain is a fantastic charismatic villain. He’s smooth, chilling, and eerily persuasive, playing the long game with a patience that spans centuries. His interactions with Emery are fascinating, particularly when he dismisses mortal struggles with the nonchalance of a being who has seen it all before.

The book can feel overwhelming at times. There’s so much going on. Biblical mythology, history, dystopian warfare, supernatural horror. The breakneck pacing means that quieter character moments, like Emery’s love for Rhyme, are often overshadowed by the grander conflicts. This isn’t necessarily a flaw, it’s part of the novel’s DNA.

The Tempests of Time is not for the faint of heart. It’s a book for readers who like their fiction dense, intense, and thought-provoking. If you enjoy apocalyptic thrillers with theological depth, visceral horror, and rapid-fire action, this book is for you.

A mesmerizing novel
What started as a gripping continuation of Emery Merrick’s story quickly became something deeper, darker, and more unsettling than I ever expected. This isn’t just another chapter in a supernatural saga, it’s a full-throttle plunge into the deepest cracks of belief, love, and identity.
Emery’s descent, spiritual, psychological, and even physical, is absolutely arresting. Watching him confront truths that unravel everything he thought he understood was both painful and fascinating. I didn’t always agree with his decisions, but I felt every moment of his struggle. And that’s what made the experience so powerful: the emotional authenticity. You don’t follow a hero, you follow a flawed man trying to survive a world where right and wrong are no longer clear.
There’s something bold about how this book handles its themes. It doesn’t just flirt with theology, it tears into it with teeth bared, asking big, uncomfortable questions and daring the reader to wrestle with them. I wasn’t just entertained, I was challenged. I found myself pausing, not because I was lost, but because I was thinking. And that, to me, is the mark of a book that hits deeper than genre labels suggest.
Jeffries writes with such clarity that I could practically feel the weight of ash in the air, see the gleam of fire on ancient stone, and hear the whispers of things lurking just out of sight. It’s cinematic, but not in a flashy way, more like a dream you can’t shake.
If you’re looking for a straightforward good vs. evil story, this book will give you that, but it’ll also upend it in ways you won’t see coming.

The atmosphere of The Tempests of Time is immersive and overwhelming, filled with devastation, madness, and a surreal blend of realism and horror. The narrative is sharp, brutal, and unflinching, pulling the reader into a world of chaos and destruction. The pacing is relentless, mirroring the urgency of the unfolding events.
What stands out in this novel is the depth of its philosophical and religious themes. Jeffries skillfully challenges perceptions of good and evil, forcing the reader to confront uncomfortable truths. The exploration of God, the devil, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness adds a fascinating layer to the horror.
One of the most compelling aspects of this book is the evolution of its main character. Emery Merrick surprises me more in this novel than ever before, showing remarkable growth and resilience. His journey is gripping, making it impossible not to be invested in his fate.
If you enjoy horror, supernatural battles, and a narrative that challenges your beliefs while keeping you on edge, this book is an absolute must-read.

Lloyd Jeffries has intricately crafted characters that add layers of intrigue and depth to the plot. Their struggles, decisions, and transformations feel real and compelling, making the journey even more immersive. The novel’s tone is deeply spiritual, reflective, and philosophical, elevating it beyond a standard apocalyptic thriller. While the apocalypse can sometimes feel like an overused theme, Jeffries approaches it with a fresh perspective, making this story completely addictive.
As a fan of his previous installments, I knew I was in for a fast-paced, action-packed ride, and this book delivered in every way. The horror, the weight of prophecy, and the dramatic dialogues create an unrelenting tension that made it nearly impossible to put down.
Themes of good versus evil, love, and sacrifice are at the heart of this novel, and Jeffries develops them brilliantly. If you’re looking for a book that seamlessly blends action, philosophy, and suspense, this is an absolute must-read.

Mind-blowing book. Jeffries gives the perfect combination of historical fantasy and theological themes. Intense narrative drives this story. Characters (like Emery Merrick) enrich...layered be it with good or evil qualities which makes for relatability. I think readers will be turning pages fast and furiously absorbing the time travel aspect as well. Jeffries gives it his all. There's so much going on in this story yet it unfolds beautifully and at a set pace with no room for confusion. It' stark. It's vivid. It's otherworldly. It's something you don't want to miss.

What struck me most about The Tempests of Time was how seamlessly it fused ancient theology with modern catastrophe. It’s not often you find a story that challenges your worldview while keeping your heart pounding, but this book did exactly that for me. It’s intense, reflective, and at times, downright haunting.
Emery Merrick’s journey captivated me not just because of the supernatural stakes, but because of how painfully human he remains in the face of them. Watching him unravel, change, and grapple with his role in events far bigger than himself was both fascinating and deeply emotional. And Cain... Cain is one of those villains who doesn’t feel like a character, but a looming force. His manipulation of history, religion, and people chilled me in a way that felt eerily believable.
The book doesn’t shy away from the uncomfortable. It digs into moral ambiguity, faith, identity, and what it means to survive when everything familiar is lost. It gave me goosebumps more than once, not just from the action or horror, but from the weight of its questions.
This wasn’t just a suspenseful read; it was a reminder of how powerful fiction can be when it challenges your mind as much as your emotions. If you’re drawn to dark, intelligent storytelling with a spiritual and political edge, I highly recommend diving into this one.

From the moment I stepped into Emery Merrick’s fractured reality, I knew this wasn’t going to be a passive reading experience. It’s bold, brooding, and absolutely fearless in the questions it raises and that’s exactly what made it so gripping for me.
There’s an undeniable gravity to this story. Every moment feels charged with significance. The stakes are cosmic, but the emotions are painfully human. Emery’s unraveling journey into truth, torment, and something close to transcendence was equal parts thrilling and devastating. Rhyme’s fury, Cain’s cold omnipotence, and the sense that even prophecy is spiraling out of control, these elements collide in a narrative that never loses momentum.
But what truly sets this book apart, in my experience, is the writing itself. It’s layered, precise, and at times, almost poetic in its complexity. There’s a rhythm to it that made me slow down, reread, and savor. The language isn’t just decorative, it’s deliberate. It builds tension, illuminates character, and heightens every philosophical undercurrent pulsing beneath the surface. For readers who appreciate textured prose and literary ambition, this book is a feast.

Lloyd Jeffries delivers a gripping, mind-bending installment in The Tempests of Time, the fourth book in the Ages of Malice series. The novel plunges readers into a chaotic world where time fractures, apocalyptic visions loom, and human fate hangs by a thread. At its core is Emery Merrick, a former journalist ensnared in a prophetic battle against Cain, the biblical first murderer, now a chilling, omnipotent force. From harrowing scenes of torment and resurrection to philosophical musings on the nature of existence, Jeffries masterfully blends supernatural horror with psychological depth, creating a narrative as haunting as it is thought-provoking.

Jeffries’ prose is both cinematic and visceral, evoking a relentless sense of urgency that keeps the pages turning. The author’s ability to weave multiple perspectives seamlessly draws readers deeper into a web of intrigue, where ancient prophecies and dystopian warfare collide. The vividly depicted landscapes mirror the tumultuous emotional states of the characters, particularly Emery, whose journey through time and trauma is portrayed with brutal intensity. The balance of action, introspection, and dark humor keeps the narrative compelling, while supporting characters like Rhyme Carter and Bill add complexity and surprising moments of levity amid the chaos.

The Tempests of Time transcends the boundaries of traditional thrillers, delivering a dense, multi-layered exploration of time, power, and redemption. Jeffries not only challenges readers to grapple with existential questions but also presents a chillingly plausible apocalyptic vision that lingers long after the last page. For fans of speculative fiction that blurs the line between the temporal and the eternal, this novel is a haunting, unflinching must-read.
