This was everything I wanted from a WW story - mythology, mystery and mayhem. Just a shame this is only half the story, and the rest is out of print!

This opens brilliantly - straight into the blood and guts the title promises! The action is full on but not without reason, and it delivers Greek mythology in a new and interesting way that allows these gods to interact with Diana, daughter of Hippolyta.

There's an intriguing story about the fate of an unborn child, and the conniving gods make things very interesting and naturally dramatic.

So yes, very much my kind of story!

Diana is depicted in a style new to me, but I really enjoyed it and the artist interpretations of the gods really fascinated me. There is plenty of detail, and the action is clean and easy to follow.

This is definitely one of my favourite Wonder Woman stories so far, so I'll definitely be recommending it!

“Truth be told, I don’t understand why either life is so important to you.” – “Because life is important.”

Diana, Wonder Woman, takes on the task of protecting a young woman named Zola who is carrying the child of Zeus, the King of the Gods, and is being persecuted by Hera, Zeus's angry, jealous wife. But this mission of protection quickly becomes earth-shattering in its consequences and Wonder Woman is wrapped up in a war between the gods themselves.

Wonder Woman: Blood and Guts collects the first two volumes of Azzarello's Wonder Woman run. So if you pick this Compact Comics edition up thinking you're getting a full story, you would be wrong. When I reached the ending, I was desperate for the story to continue and I know, in the near future, I will dive into volume three. I just need to know what happens next in this war of the gods and the lives of these characters. I have read a comic from Azzarello before but didn't like it at all, so I was a bit hesitant when I started this, worried I would not like it. But to my joy, I found this story exciting, action-packed, intriguing and delightfully bonkers. The art by Cliff Chiang and Tony Akins was also really good – I loved the way they drew the fight scenes and there were some really good character designs. Diana looks incredibly strong and I love how tall she is, and, on a more shallow note, she is hot as fuck in this book. I loved Hera's peacock cape (a nod to the importance of the bird to her in mythology), the contrast between the ember-like Apollo and the bright shining Artemis, and Poseidon being a literal sea beast. I was amused by Aphrodite being nude, cause of course she is, and the reader never seeing her face: it is left to us to imagine what the most beautiful woman ever looks like. Some character designs were a bit odd, such as Hades and his candle head. One of the most impressive artistic feats of the book was the depiction of the Underworld – it was delightfully gruesome, dark and creepy.

Diana is a cool lead character and while this book does showcase her core values and strengths – her desire to protect all life, her ability to love unconditionally and her emphasis on truth and empathy – very well, I do think Azzarello could've gone deeper with her. In this story she But despite all this emotional turmoil, it feels like the book never stops to really deal with them. Yes, we see Diana cry, regret and grieve, but often very briefly before we get back to the action and move on with the story. I would've loved more introspection and more time dedicated to her inner world, her thoughts, her feelings and the way she sees herself. I think this is my main gripe with this story. But despite all this, I did like Azzarello's Diana. She's fierce, strong, clever, brave and always ready to sacrifice herself to help those who need it. She doesn't need to know who Zola is to fight for her and even if they hadn't become friends, she would've gone to literal Hell for her and fought the Gods for her. I loved Diana telling Hades when That was some good, pure Wonder Woman content.

I liked the supporting cast. As a huge Greek myth nerd, I was pumped to see all the gods and how they were drawn as well as depicted. They all felt like themselves – Hera is jealous and full of rage, Artemis is a warrior, Hephaestus is an outsider god and someone who sees them a bit differently because of how he was shunned by his mother for his imperfections, and Poseidon is misogynistic and dreams of power – but they still managed to surprise me over the course of the book. I liked Ares being this tired, exhausted, depressed drunkard who doesn't want any part in any of this and who knows that no matter what they do, war is inevitable, it always is. I liked the inclusion of Strife (Eris) and how, wherever she goes, if she so pleases, she can make people fight and argue. I liked how you cannot quite pinpoint whether she is good or bad (the same goes for most of the gods). I had no idea Hermes would play such a big role in this book and be a pal to Diana and Zola on their travels. His design was not my fave but his journey of I don't have any major feelings yet about Lennox, Zeus's child and semidivine, but I didn't mind him. Zola was a lot of fun – she is sassy and just along for the ride, no matter how weird her life gets, because what else can she do? I felt really bad for her because she had no idea the man she hooked up with was Zeus and even if she had known, she still doesn't deserve Hera's wrath.

I thik Azzarello does a good job with making this story feel both like a superhero comic and a Greek myth. I especially loved how this story has so many classic Greek myth things from Zeus knocking an innocent woman up only to leave her to be punished by his wife to the gods interfering in the lives of mortals to Cerbeus being the best three-headed boy and our hero having to fight scary monsters. There's even a trip to the Underworld. I loved all the references to known myths – my favorite one was I need that story to continue in later volumes, I need to know more! I also really loved the depiction of the Olympian family. They are, as they should be, a huge mess and they are constantly bickering, fighting each other and betraying one another. This interaction between Apollo and his oracles: “Your family… is broken… beaten and betrayed. By blood.” – “Tell me something I don’t know…” There were many moments like this that were both humorous and, when you really think of them, hella sad. The messy godly dynamics also extend to Zola and Diana, who realize Even though the depiction of the gods is definitely very cynical and Azzarello embraces their more monstrous qualities (Hephaestus, one of the kinder gods, even says: “As a God, I will tell you that they don’t care about anyone… but themselves.”) there are moments in which you can see care between them. Apollo and Artemis, the sun and the moon twins, team up (they arrive riding a motorcycle, which was all sorts of cool) and Eris does seem to have a sort of fondness, at least as much as she can have for anyone as the literal embodiment of Strife, for her mom, Hera.

Everything to do with the gods fighting for the throne now as Zeus is missing and Zola's baby being part of a prophecy that threatens the end of Olympus as they know it, was super cool. The storyline is left unresolved in this bind up but as I said, I will definitely keep reading this series. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a heavily Greek myth inspired Wonder Woman story. It's not quite perfect, but I hope future volumes will give even more depth to Diana's character and allow her to really get into all she has been through. There's plenty of potential for this to become one of my favorite comics ever!

Wonder Woman has recently became apart of my top 5 superhero’s. This was a fun and gritty story that leaves you wanting more of it (in a good way don’t worry). I think this story amazing shows off Wonder Woman’s core attributes as a hero and person. I think at her core Wonder Woman represents truth and love. This story shows her love for people despite all of their faults.

Ok enough about her. I loved the way the Greek Gods are depicted in both design and personality (except Hades with his candle head). I especially loved the characterization of Hephaestus.

I want to stay vague cause I really think anyone could enjoy this story.

Overall a solid 4.5 :)

I honestly really enjoyed this. I always underestimate how quickly you can read a comic book, though it took me 10 days to read I actually only sat down to read this book twice. Excited to see if there is more to this story but overall super fun and I loved all the character designs

A good story involving Diana and the Greek Gods and, although at first I didn't particularly enjoy the art, it quickly grew on me.

Loved this. Of all the DC characters I’m probably most intrigued by Wonder Woman because unlike Superman and Batman, the stories told in the comics, or the scope of them, doesn’t really seem to have been adequately represented in either the films or TV.

The artwork is much better and clearer than the image they picked for the cover, which is pretty weak if you ask me. What I really loved, though, is the presence of so many Greek gods as characters. There are loads of them in here and some really graphic imagery that, if it were adapted, could look incredible on screen.

I was engrossed in the story throughout. It’s bursting with imagination and I hope they release the follow up to this in the DC Compact Comics series, as this was a brilliant beginning (not that the ending isn’t satisfying in itself).

AH! It’s this lady…watch out! ‼️ Wait, here’s Hermes? I guess- but just when you think! NO! It’s a horse man, 🐎 he’s here to kill you…oh, never mind! It’s Hera, she’s the bad guy we did it, we’ve figured it out. STOP RIGHT THERE! ✋Who’s this random guy? He’s made of rocks…does he have a name? Ok he’s British…I guess that’s good. 🇬🇧💂 Ok, but let’s refocus because there’s a new guy here. It’s a child…? No. Hades. He’s a kid? 🧍‍♂️ Sure. But there’s no time because IT’S THE HORSE GUY AGAIN! Wonder Woman heeeelp! Ok, now that she’s helped we can finally- AGH! A prophecy… of course…why didn’t I think of that 😌- Oh! 📜 AH hahaha, just when you thought you had it figured out it turns out Hermes was evil all along 👹 (maybe WW and Apollo are in love and also he’s maybe evil?) and also it’s the last page 😏

(Overly-complicated and disjointed. These people may not know you can plan a story before writing a chapter)

I can see why people enjoyed the story.. some of the characters are fun, and it doesn't get super boring i guess, but I just can't get over the massive mischaracterization of wonderwoman in this book 💔! the aesthetic of her character is cool, but her morals and values, what she fights for, her origin story is totally muddled, and it personally doesn't sit right with me. Wonderwoman's character design and overall art in this book is beautiful, and it is personally why I bothered to finish the book. The book is alright, but .. :c mayn the story really felt like it was missing something with wonderwoman's character sigh I was seriously disappointed the moment I saw the clay origin story change at that very point i already felt like I knew where this story was heading 💀

Kudos
-The pacing was good. It was a compelling read
-There were some cool lore twists that I thought were interesting
-The character designs were epic. Apollo was terrifying
-The tone was grittier so the Greek mythology didn’t feel campy like it sometimes does in comics

Nit Picks
-This is a personal preference, but it could have toned down the spice a little
-The ending felt a bit rushed
-It ends on a cliff hanger (which I thought was odd because it’s supposed to be a compact comic)

Incredible art style, insane use of colour, so many hues and tones I never would have expected and a really engrossing story full of great characters and dynamics. Not a huge fan of the cliffhanger ending but this is comics so I’m sure there’s more to this but overall I’m now a huge fan of Cliff Chiang’s art and loved his take on all the gods. Fantastic work.

Just rating this compact as a whole rather than the content, that’s what each volume review is for. The binding on these have become a lot stronger as I’ve gotten them. This was a great story to read for the first time in Compact edition but not all of them are perfect for that. This was a perfect storm edition that just hit all the notes and makes me wanna check out the rest of the run

It didn’t make me a WW ride or die fan like WOT did to me for Supergirl but it’s still a fun ride, looking into it and the controversy of how some areas of her mythos are changed I totally can see the frustration and I’m interested to see other iterations in the future.

I really enjoyed this on the whole. I thought the artwork was consistent and good, and the overarching story arc of this was really solid too. I have come to really like the character of Wonder woman and this volume continues to solidify that.

Kinda fucking sucks honestly. Takes everything cool about Wonder Woman and either ruins it or doesn’t cash in on it. Just feels like a waste of time.
