After reading almost every book Ms. Woodhall has written I think I've figured out how her mind works: the perpetrator is going to be the last person you ever expect. But even knowing this, looking carefully to find the least mentioned character Ms. Woodhall still manages to surprise me. And it's not contrived if that's what you were thinking. When she explains the who and the why it makes perfect sense. I also enjoy that she includes scenes from the prepetrator's point of view. That person usually has a "code name" so she can talk about them without giving anything away. It makes for a multi-layered story when you can get inside the mind of a killer. I also enjoy the ensemble cast feeling of Ms. Woodhall's stories. Almost every branch of law enforcement up to and including the FBI is included, plus an additional PI. The characters are realistic and relatable. The writing style is easy to read and flows along smoothly. There is also a bit of romance without anything overt; if you know what I mean. If you haven't read any of Ms. Woodhall's series I highly recommend them. They don't have to be read in order but I think you will appreciate the character development more if you do. I received a review copy from the author via BookSirens and this review reflects my honest and voluntary opinion.

In an attempt to find evidence against the elusive Jordan Stone, FBI agent Bailey Flynn goes undercover, but the op goes wrong, and Bailey loses her memory after someone shoots her. Clues suggest the culprit is connected to an old case that still haunts Bailey. At the same time, an old skull is found at the railroad depot, and the gun used in this crime is the same one used to shoot Bailey. Add to all this a string of suicides that might have been staged, and the FBI and local police have plenty of work to do.

The story has plenty of suspense and drive, with some sweet moments in between. As in most previous books, a lot is going on simultaneously. Considering the FBI, a task force, the local PD, and a PI are all involved, but working on separate cases, things are bound to get messy for the reader. Unsurprisingly, everything that happens ends up connected in a way, as is normal for the plots in this series. However, the probability of that happening in real life is slim, and I found myself thinking on several occasions whilst reading "C'mon, really?".

This is the sixth book about Bailey Flynn, and I recommend reading them from the start rather than jumping in somewhere. I also think the ending in this book is a nice way to end the adventures of Bailey Flynn, though the author has given herself plenty of room to continue if she wants to.

Forsaken Souls, the latest in Melinda Woodhall’s addictive crime thriller series, delivers a gripping and emotional ride through the darker corners of justice and trauma. Centered around the determined and deeply human character of Detective Veronica Shade, the story kicks off with the disappearance of a young woman—and quickly spirals into a complex web of secrets, danger, and buried pain.

Woodhall balances fast-paced plotting with emotional depth, allowing her characters to breathe even as the suspense builds. Themes of survival, sisterhood, and redemption thread through the narrative, adding layers beyond the typical procedural. The dialogue is sharp, the pacing tight, and the final reveal both surprising and satisfying.

Whether you're new to the series or a returning fan, Forsaken Souls is a tightly wound, emotionally resonant thriller that stands on its own while adding depth to the larger world Woodhall has built. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Bailey Flynn FBI book # 6

The story in a few words:

Special Agent Baily Flynn is on the hunt for a sadistic predator, an internet troll, with a violent past. While digging deeper into past homicides she worked on, Baily sees connection to mysterious cold cases she was involved with three years earlier. Bailey is on the move.

My thoughts:

I like how each books keep us guessing who the culprit may be till the last moment. She teases us with suspense in a plot filled with action peppered with twist and turns. Not only the story keeps the interest at bay it is also exciting to read with the many surprises Melinda spins on us.

The writing style is easy to keep up with and the words flow smoothly. What is spookier that a story around the discovery of a skull found at old railroad station and an agent on the predator’s tail hell- bent to catch him before he strikes again. To top it all and add more suspense, Bailey is also targeted by her long-time nemesis who still wants her out of the way. Of course all ends well. So many characters, so many well-rounded ones.

Nicely done as always.

This is the sixth book in Melinda Woodhall's "Bailey Flynn" series, it can totally be read as a standalone but I would urge reading the series in sequence to gain the most enjoyment.
Bailey's cover has been blown but by whom, her life was on the line once more.
FBI agent Bailey Flynn had been assigned to Bell Harbour PD in Florida where she had been working undercover as a barista in a coffee shop, a coffee shop that was suspected of laundering money for drug boss Jonathan Stone. When the shooter entered the café and started killing, Bailey was quick enough to press record on her mobile before she was shot.
After being in an induced coma for ten days, Bailey was frustrated, from the recording on her mobile it was obvious that she recognised the killer but she had no memory of the incident.
The body count escalates, Jonathan Stone has disappeared, who was the owner of the gun that had been identified ? Bailey is desperate to help find Jonathan Stone but she didn't know if she even still had a job.
Ex ranger now a PI, Dalton West was worried, he knew that his girlfriend Bailey was on Stone's hit list, could he find Stone before Stone found Bailey ?
This story covers serial killings, corruption, trolling and gentle romance, it is action packed, the story flows well, the characters are very likeable and the ending is unexpected.

After an undercover mission goes awry, Bailey Flynn is left without any memory of the events that landed her in the hospital. The only evidence is a recording she was able to make of her conversation with her would-be killer. A recording that not only brings up a case from her past that she'd rather have left behind her, but also makes it clear that the suspect is someone she's familiar with.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

The book starts off well, then slows down quite a bit while we catch up with the other characters. It does pick up again, however, and, as with Woodhall's other novels, the anticipation builds until Bailey - and we along with her - finally uncovers the truth in an edge-of-your-seat conclusion.

While it's the sixth in the series, the only thing that would potentially make it difficult to read before the previous five would be the number of characters you'd need to come to know. Though they don't - unfortunately - play as large a role in this one.

I need more Bailey/Dalton scenes, please! While they experienced new dimensions to their relationship due to Bailey's injury, it feels like they still haven't really figured each other out. Dalton, for example, especially at the end of the novel, doesn't seem to fully realize Bailey's strength (of mind and character, as well as physical strength), but maybe that's just me.

Thank you to BookSirens for a complimentary e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Forsaken Souls is book 4 in the Bailey Flynn series it starts off with Bailey deep undercover and what starts off like a regular day quickly turns south as her cover is blown and she is nearly killed by someone she recognized. However, having spent 10 days in a coma with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) Bailey is frustrated by the fact she can’t remember what happened that day or who her assailant was. With her cover blown she is reassigned to a different case but struggles with lingering affects of her injuries most of which she tries to hide from her family, friends and colleagues so she can get back to work. Bailey Seems solo in this book as most everything revolves around trying to piece together her fragments do memories and work herself back into the car she wants to work from the fringes. We don’t see much of many of our main characters so we don’t see really any progression with Dalton at all although other loose ends from previous books are wrapped up. This book didn’t have they same cohesive teamwork vibe and I definitely missed not seeing progress in Bailey‘s personal life.
Overall the story as always is really good and I very much enjoyed reading it. This was definitely a solid 4 stars and I do recommend it if your a fan of the series.

I received an ARC through "Booksirens" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This story begins with Bailey working undercover in a coffee shop where she is shot and ends up in the hospital. Bailey is in a coma for 10 days before she reawakens. At that time, she does not remember anything about the robbery. When she returns back to work, she learns that the team she had been on had been disbanded. She was assigned to work on a financial case.

Bailey later got involved in a hunt for a serial killer once a supposed suicide eas determined to be a murder. The individual killed had been trolled by an unknown individual. At the same time, a skull had been found and the bullet retrieved matched the bullet that was found when Bailey was shot. In addition, after looking for the rest of the bones, a rope was discovered. This was similar to the supposed suicide.

While Bailey was involved with her hunt, Dalton was looking for Jonathan Stone who had ordered Bailey killed. In the end, there would be a connection between the two cases.

To discover who shot Bailey, why Bailey was targeted, who the troll was and how the cases were connected, then you need to read this book.

I am always amazed and sit back at the end of a Melinda Woodhall book thinking what the heck just happened? This author will fool you over and over again, as you try to solve the mystery and figure out the final reveal. In the meantime there will be tingles, anticipation and lots of creepiness as you fly through the pages.

When a new murder investigation opens up evidence that is eerily similar to a cold case, it is all hands on deck. The setting for this one was especially creepy and added to the thrill of the mystery. If you have read any of the Bailey Flynn series, you know that Bailey will let nothing come between her and the pursuit of justice, not even a brush with death. She is like a tiger roaming in the jungle. She is aware of everything going on around her seeking whom she may devour. If you are in her sights, you better look out because she is coming for you.

Curveballs are thrown at lightning fast speed that will leave you dizzy, and the tension was so palpable that I found myself clenching my jaw.

If you like a great thriller/mystery, treat yourself and read this one. You will not regret it.

The latest entry in the Bailey Flynn series had some red herrings, and the culprit who was found by Bailey was surprising. Based on that person’s history, it seemed like they should have been suspected earlier by the police.

Dalton telling Bailey she’s “safe now” after Bailey found the baddie was eye-rolling, in my opinion. I like their relationship, but it seemed as if Dalton was taking credit for Bailey’s safety.

Earlier in the book a paragraph starts, “The sun was setting over Summerset Memorial Park…”. Then, Mason, the medical examiner, says that with luck a related event can happen “this afternoon”. If the sun was setting, nothing could occur that afternoon. Maybe the sun was supposed to be rising?

The writer, Melinda Woodhall, kept writing “Holbrook Coffee Company” even though it’s the only coffee place mentioned in the book. “Cafe” or “coffee store” would have been preferable. The full name of the county railroad depot and juvenile detention center was also repeated too many times.

Forsaken Souls is one of those crime thrillers that grabs you by the collar from the very first page and doesn’t let go. Melinda Woodhall has once again proven her talent for crafting intense, emotionally charged suspense with a strong, smart female lead at the center of it all.

This installment in the Winter Black series (or if you're reading the Mercy Harbor Thriller collection, depending on how you found it) is a powerful blend of gritty crime investigation and layered character development. I was completely hooked by the storyline involving missing girls and the chilling uncovering of a human trafficking ring—disturbing, yes, but incredibly compelling. Woodhall handles heavy topics with care while keeping the stakes high and the pace relentless.

Detective Veronica Shade is an easy protagonist to root for—fierce, dedicated, and humanly flawed. I appreciated how her personal struggles are woven into the larger narrative, giving the story both heart and edge. The emotional depth here really stood out. There’s a real sense of urgency and empathy in her pursuit of justice, and that kept me turning page

Bailey Flynn a hard driven FBI agent who does her level best to get her bad man all the time is working undercover agent trying to find Stone the man who is responsible for so many deaths in the Florida area where she is assigned. He has taken over the drug cartel and has put out a hit on Bailey along with others.
This book does an excellent job of putting all the past open-ended questions about the cartel in previous books to rest. The book gives some answers to who and why things happened the way they did which finally answers some questions and though Baily is hurt in her undercover operation and it’s her sister and her boyfriend always backing her up and helping where they can as needed.
This book brought satisfaction in reading it that the bad boys are finally caught and behind bars as they should be and Bailey is still assigned to the Miami field office for more books in this series. All in all a great read and looking forward to the next Baily Flynn book seeing how much trouble she can get into next time.

Wow FBI Agent Bailey Flynn has her hands full in this book. We start out with Bailey working undercover as a barista at the local coffee shop. The owner of the shop is working with a gang that is snuggling something in her coffee bags. So it seems there is always some questionable characters hanging around. Today one of the bad guys decided to shoot the owner of the coffee shop, Lorraine Holbrook, the bad guy running this operation and Bailey was shot in the head. She ends up in the hospital in a coma and her sister Kate spends days at her side. When she wakes up she has not memory of what happened at the coffee shop and no idea who shot her. But the bullet she was shot with is linked to another crime. As soon as she is able too Bailey leaves the hospital, without being discharged and starts trying to help find out who shot her and to solve the old crime as well. She uncovers an online troll that is stalking people and then killing them. Will Bailey be able to solve this mystery before the troll strikes again and will she get her memory back?

I am an ARC reader and this is my honest opinion. I love Melinda Woodhall's books. Both the Bailey Flynn and Bridget Bishop series. Her writing draws me in from page one and I can't stop turning the pages until I've finished. I feel I know Bailey Flynn personally since I've read the series from Book 1. The action is fast paced, the villains villainous and in this book, there's a surprise when the denouement comes. The politics, which involve Bailey's sister Cait, an attorney who started to run for the open position of Judge in Belle Harbour, Florida, their home town, against a corrupt attorney, close with the Mayor of doubtful morals, but gave up her campaign when Bailey was badly injured. However there will be another chance. I'm very much looking forward to reading the next instalment in the lives of these interesting characters and whatever the criminal underworld can throw at them next. Also, there is a nice touch of two of romance to lighten the mood!

3.5 stars - read on KU

This book is good in that it wraps up several things from previous books, not just some investigations. However, it felt like Dalton and Mason were bigger players in investigating than Bailey.
I was a little disappointed about who the bad guy was. It wasn't someone I would have guessed and that was largely because that person wasn't much of a factor in the story.

The end of the book dropped it to 3 stars vs 4. Bailey totally takes care of herself and Dalton arrives just as it happens. He hugs her and says "I've got you. You're safe now." She didn't need him to be safe.

The 2 or 3 chapters at the end that wrap things up seem to have conflicting timelines. Bailey says it has been weeks since a certain event, bit then other things happen that would have happened much sooner than weeks later.

I enjoyed the book and have enjoyed the series, but this one needed a stronger finish.

This is another well-written Bailey Flynn FBI mystery. It is the sixth book in the series. While it could be read as a standalone, it is better to have read the earlier books. A bonus to those who read the earlier books is seeing some outstanding issues resolved in this one.

The story begins with a bang as Bailey, working undercover, is shot and spends 10 days in a coma. She suffers some brain trauma, and her investigation is hampered by memory loss of the events surrounding her gunshot injury.

There is plenty of mystery and suspense. Bailey is in serious danger of being killed by the man who shot her. This kept me turning the pages quickly as I couldn't see how the case would be resolved.

I like that Melinda Woodhall always produces books that have been properly proofread. I didn't give 5 stars because I didn't care for some of the people and matters in the political subplot.

FORSAKEN SOULS is book 6 in the Bailey Flynn series, and it starts when Bailey’s deep undercover is blown, and she is nearly killed. Before getting shot, she recorded the conversation between her and the killer but can’t remember who it is due to loss of memory. It is frustrating for her, especially because the body count is mounting.

As Bailey is sidetracked by the hunt for a serial killer/online troll, a chilling realization dawns on her-these killings are connected to her own case. The book's fast-paced narrative and intricate plot keep you challenging to piece together the clues. Meanwhile, the Jordan Stone crime cartel story unfolds in the background, adding another layer of complexity to the narrative.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to BookSirens for providing me with a complimentary copy of this riveting read. And to you, Melinda, for crafting yet another compelling story. Your work never fails to keep us engaged. Thank you for another terrific read!

Another good read from Melinda Woodhall in the Bailey Flynn series. When the owner of a coffee shop is gunned down and the bodies start piling up, Bailey finds that there are links to previous cases she’s dealt with and it feels like her search for billionaire Jordan Stone needs to intensify. Her relationship with Dalton is getting stronger but he is concerned for her safety and feels helpless to protect her.

There are several cases which appear to all be connected and the storylines are nicely intertwined, with plenty of clues, especially to an internet troll who seems to be going far beyond simply harassment on line. I really didnt work out who the troll was, which is always good, but it did feel as though the ending was a bit rushed. However, this didn’t detract from the enjoy, ent of the read.

Book Sirens eARC. While working undercover to expose a money laundering scheme at a local coffee shop, the owner is gunned down and Bailey is seriously injured. Recovering in the hospital Bailey is frustrated because her memories are foggy and she has the haunting feeling she knew the shooter. Uncovering a menacing internet troll with links to a old case from three years ago and a skull recently found in an abandoned rail yard Bailey puts herself at risk to follow the trail. As with other entries in this series threads are introduced from previous cases and some are neatly tied while leaving enough dangling to keep the reader engaged for the next chapter. Woodhall is s prolific wordsmith and can be depended on to deliver a tightly plotted, fast paced crime narrative with engaging recurring characters.

I thought I was reading book 6 in a series about a detective and her dog. When the main character and the dog's names were different, I realized it was a different series! In my opinion, not as good as the Paige Black books.
"When the owner of a local coffee shop is gunned down in broad daylight, Special Agent Bailey Flynn links the murder to a sadistic internet troll with a violent past.
As she digs deeper into the perplexing homicide, Bailey is shocked to discover an unsettling connection to a mysterious cold case and a vicious predator she shot and killed in the line of duty three years earlier.
Desperate to uncover the troll’s true identity before he targets another victim, Bailey must trace the vindictive killer back to the scene of his first unspeakable crime." synopsis copied

I enjoyed this book. I hadn't read any of the previous books in the series, however I have now added these to my 'to read' pile. I'd say reading these isn't essential, but there is some reference to events that occur outside of this story.

This follows an undercover agent who is shot in the course of her role as a barista at a coffee shop. The book then goes on to uncover who the mysterious shooter is - this character is also an online troll who has some sort of hit list.

I did not guess who the troll, Grendell, was. I thought this was cleverly introduced. At one stage I thought it was someone else entirely and I was convinced I was right until the very end.

The relationship between Dalton and Bailey was interesting and I'll definitely be looking out for the rest of this series.

She did it to me again. This time I was tossing up between two of the characters to be the murderer, based on the clues the author was leaving. Then another clue ruled one out. I was wrong again. I never even suspected the real culprit. This book follows on well from the others in the series and contains all your favourite characters. This has the added twist of Bailey knowing who the murderer is, but losing her short-term memory when he shoots her.

While you can read this as a stand-alone, I recommend you read the books in order. The main case in each book is different, but there is an ongoing case which will make more sense if you have read the previous books.

This latest book starts off in dramatic fashion when a normal day at a coffee shop soon turns into a quite violent encounter which leaves Bailey in hospital. After some rest, she is assigned to a different case but continues to pursue her own investigation hindered by some memory loss. At the same time, a discovery of a skull seems to have links to other deaths linked to an online troll.

This was another terrific story with the different stories all being nicely linked in the end. I had no idea who the troll was and the reveal was a complete surprise. I liked how some threads from the earlier books are now being gradually closed off and look forward to the next instalment.

Forsaken Souls was the first book I’ve read by Melinda Woodhall, and I really enjoyed it. Even though it’s the sixth book in the Bailey Flynn series, I was able to follow along without having read the others.
The story has a nice pace, with some good twists and well-done characters. The ending was a surprise—I didn’t see the reveal coming. If you’ve read the earlier books, this one ties up a few of the loose ends. After reading it, I’m definitely interested in going back to check out the first five books.
Bailey Flynn is a strong main character. She’s recovering from a brain injury after being shot during an undercover operation, and she’s dealing with memory loss from that day. She’s determined to figure out who was behind it and how it connects to past crime

A murder mystery plus!

FBI Bailey Flynn is undercover looking for a drug trafficking scheme and money laundering in a local coffee shop, where she's working as a barista. At the same time another case still haunts her when a little girl was murdered and Bailey shot the msn responsible but his partner wants revenge, while there's a troll sending cryptic death threats to women, who are later found hanging. Made to look like suicides. Til bones are found that are part of a body in which the skull was found previously.
The agent starts to feel that all these things are tied together and committed by the same man, A billionaire and a few of his cronies.
Can she solve these crimes and stay alive while doing it?

Bailey is maturing both in terms of character development for the plot but also as a person within the story and that's fun to read.

I like the fact that certainly elements appear again and again like old friends, but at the same time they are not overdone. So Ludwig is helpful finding things, & Sabrina is after stories, but she herself also proves more reliable and mature in this newest update to the series.

Book six in the series and again Melinda Woodhall brings us a read full of mystery, murder, suspicion and suspense. As always, the book begins with a crime and Bailey's involvement is a little too close to home for comfort. I have read more than a few of Melinda Woodhall's books and they never feel stale to me. Each one is a fresh tale told expertly and I have enjoyed each and every one. Forsaken Souls was enjoyed by me as much as the first book of this author's that I picked up, and I am positive that I will enjoy the next just as much.

My mind was blown with who the perp was for this story line. love when a perp isn't obvious, makes it a great read. This was one book I had no clue who it could be. I like that the Stone plot was wrapped up. I appreciate that Bailey started contemplating a life with other options and enjoyed seeing Cate and Mason progress as a couple and more. People had to step up, and it played well. I am confused if this ends Baily Flynn or not but have never been disappointed in a Melinda Woodhall read. Bailey is undercover with a money-laundering case when she is shot. In a coma for several weeks, she awakens to a benched case - that is, until the bullet involved is the same bullet found at a prior crime scene.

This author does a great job tying up some loose ends from earlier books in the series. Because of this, I would suggest you read the previous five books to really understand the nuances of this book.

Excellent read, as are all her books. I highly recommend all of her series, and there are cross-over characters from series to series that make them even more exciting to read. Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of this book.

I really enjoyed Forsaken Souls. It’s a fast moving read that kept me guessingas the suspense was building. I didn’t figure out who the killer was until it was revealed, which made it even better.
Without giving anything away, I was pleased with the development with Jordan Stone, though I have a feeling his story might not be completely finished.
I always like that there is some romance in the book, but the focus remains on the crime.
Overall, it’s a great thriller with strong characters and lots of surprises. I’m looking forward to reading more in the series!
