Dead Emma

Rate this book
It’s hard to feed a ghost.

That’s me, Emma the ghost, but I won’t be one for much longer. My jerk of a stepbrother Max is supposed to feed me but he’s been missing for months. Months I’ve been eating a stockpile of frozen…parts he left me.

When he finally shows up with no explanation of where he’s been or why he left, I want to be angry—but that isn’t what has me so tense when we’re alone. It seems like he’s always trying to get up in my space—and what’s worse, I want him to be. But that’s so wrong.

Besides, I haven’t even gotten over my dead ex-boyfriend, Jake. How can I feel things for one guy, let alone two—especially when one is surely dead?

I have bigger things to think about anyway, like going up against the biggest baddies in science and magic. And if they catch us, I might be Dead Emma for real.

You know those funny yet gore filled movies from like the 80s and 90s? Put that in book form, add a dead moody girl with two love interests, a big macho kind of emotionally stunted stud muffin, and a masochistic twink with a penchant for “good boy” and you’ve got this book.

I waited WAY too long to start this and once I did, I couldn’t put it down!

These characters are all the unfortunate outcome of circumstance and scientific experimantation. But the entire book kept me on the edge of laughing, being grossed out and very strangely turned on. It could go from a sweet moment to what the fück in two paragraphs.

I loved it!

It was set in such an interesting universe and I found myself rooting for our babies. I loved the way they all came together (🫡😏) and the dark magic elements were very cool! Also very much appreciated the translations we got so we could easily follow along with spells and such.

Aside from the strange and the macabre I genuinely loved these characters. The relationships between them took some work but it ended up blossoming into something really beautiful. And innocent as they could be with them in it lol

Add this to your tbr for spooky season if you think you’d enjoy a book about a ragtag group of people just wanting to love and survive. Oh and if you don’t mind a bit of erotic c@nn!b@l!sm.

You read that right. Don’t judge. Just enjoy.

@authorsylviamorrow you’re some kind of genius, huh? Thank you for letting me ARC read for you. I had an absolute blast and will not have nightmares about very brave BJs anytime soon. 😮‍💨

There are a lot more dark and taboo tropes in this (some I can’t even list), but I loved every line and the universe this is set in. Emma is sweet but sassy. Max is every bit the Alpha protector who is obsessed with Emma enough to ☠️ anyone who stands in his way. Jake is a cinnamon roll… with a VERY unique kink making the spice in this just *chef’s kiss*.

I hope there are more tales from this crazy world, and that we get to visit Emma, Jake and Max again in the future. Despite the trauma and horrors they’ve been through, they love and care for one another in a way that only they can.

This had all the gory horror taboo energy you could want. All of these characters were very very stabby. It was their favorite method of conflict resolution. I thoroughly enjoyed the discovering bisexuality plot line and all of the creepy disturbing smut. Max had that voyeur die-for-you stepbrother thing going on. Emma was vicious in her own right. Jake was all sweet and submissive with the most disturbing pain/vore kink ever. They were all made for each other in their disturbing way.

Spice: 5/5

Triggers: discussion of life after death, gun violence, torture, cannibalism, vore, dubcon, murder including ritualistic, decapitation and dismemberment, references to experimentation on children, body horror, cancer, parental death, voyeurism without consent, references to person dissolving in vat of acid, internalized biphobia/homophobia, drowning of side characters (off page), step sibling physical intimacy, choking, self inflicted injuries

You may recognize Sylvia Morrow from the sentient object romance book, Stuffed. You know, the one about the pillow that turns into a man made of pillow? It’s great fun and there’s even a sequel. You should read it if you like stuff like that. I loved it. You may also recognize Sylvia Morrow from her social media, where she is just about the sweetest person ever. When she started talking about her darker horror romance book, Dead Emma, I was intrigued. If you follow the indie horror scene, you know that horror romance is having a moment. It’s a blip of a moment, but I love to see it.

Emma is a ghost trapped on an island with her Aunt Jess. Due to some unpleasant scientific experiments conducted on her all her life and eventual death, Emma remains in a state of undeath so long as she is able to feed on human flesh. Her step-brother Max has been supplying her with food ever since her boyfriend Jake died. Max is alive, but headless. He was shot in the head, but was somehow revived by the council and fitted with a mask that functions as a head without a face. Unbeknownst to Emma, Max has been in love with her since their parents married when they were teenagers. When her safety is jeopardized and the need to find a way to remove her anchor to the island becomes necessary, Max decides it’s time to pour his heart out to her before it’s too late. She is understandably confused, but confesses to having feelings for him that she hadn’t acknowledged sooner because she was happily in love with Jake. Max is ecstatic…until Jake comes back from the dead. You see, Jake was also part of the experimentation gang. He is able to regenerate missing body parts, including, apparently, his entire body that had been dissolved by acid. Fuckin’ amazing. Does that make him immortal? Maybe. It also makes him a perfect companion for Emma, who relies on consuming human flesh to survive. See where this is going? Yeah you do. It’s great.

Jake’s arrival complicates things between Emma and Max, who have shed their step sibling relationship in favor of a romantic one. Emma quickly realizes that she’s still in love with Jake. But she’s also in love with Max. Can she have both? Will they have each other? Can they work this out AND figure out an escape plan? You’ll have to read it to find out. And you definitely should. I really like this darker Sylvia Morrow. I love her sentient object books, but Dead Emma is on a whole other level. If you’re a monster fucker horror hound like myself, you’re gonna love it.

To be honest, I’d love to get a glimpse into Sylvia Morrow’s mind, as I’m continually impressed by the originality of the books she writes. I never know what to expect when I start reading one of her stories, all I know is that I will very probably like it, and this time that proved to be the case once again, as I really enjoyed Dead Emma.

I’ve said before that I’ve never read a book like this before, but this is even truer this time.

Emma is a ghost who needs to feed on human flesh to keep her body solid. Max is her stepbrother, who is as impressively large as he is headless. Meanwhile, Jake is a spellcaster—whose body can regenerate itself—who loves Emma and lets her feed on him, and who also is a masochist. This trio seems completely unlikely, and yet it makes perfect sense in this book.

As always, I loved the humour that Sylvia Morrow brings to her characters. Sure, it’s dark, it’s gory, it’s taboo, but it’s that touch of humour that gives this story its incredible flavour.

I also really like the cover of the book. I think it really captures the spirit of the book.

If you have an open mind and a strong stomach, I recommend this story, but before you read it, take the time to read the CW at the beginning of the book and on the author’s website. This book is intended for an 18+ readership.

I would like to thank Sylvia Morrow for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. It is truly a pleasure to be part of your ARC team.

Dead Emma follows three main characters & the minutia of their "after"lives together & their plan of action to defend themselves against "The Council".
This is a very dark romance & there is a full list of trigger warnings at the start of the book that should be read before delving into this creative work of art.
The three main characters are all brilliantly written, I think my favourite is Max, though it does chop & change depending on his behaviour, sometimes he's a bit too much for me, but it's part of his character to sometimes be a sweetheart & sometimes absolutely not a sweetheart! I think Mary stood out for me as well, very much enjoyed her small role.
I had my heart in my mouth throughout, hoping they'd find a way to help Emma with her death & death dilemma with the Council.
There were amazing scenes in the book with these rituals that Jake performed & I loved imagining them, some parts were absolutely left to the imagination & it was perfect!
The book is full to the brim with spice but it never gets boring, with some books the sex scenes can become quite samey & boring, but every spice scene in this book was unique & interesting to imagine, some had me wincing, particularly the shower scene but I'll say no more about that. So some of the spicy scenes were not completely to my liking, but I felt like those scenes still benefitted the storyline & character growth & exploration.
Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed this book, it's the perfect time of year for such a story & I loved getting to know all the characters.

Sylvia never, ever disappoints!!! Every time
I read a new book from her, I’m constantly wondering how she comes up with it and this was no different!! If you’re familiar with Sylvia’s work, this is completely different, new and so exciting. While Dead Emma still contains moments of her normal, adorable fluffiness and silliness; it is a dark, paranormal romance. This book was full of firsts for me as a reader! (Make sure to always check author’s content warnings when reading anything “dark”.) Readers can except some pretty explicit, gore-y spice scenes as well as self, inflicted pain & cannibalism. (Pro-tip: avoid eating while reading this book🤣)
I truly loved this world and its characters. Emma is a super lovable, sweet, spicy and very hungry ghost! She has a favorite sheet to wear and if that doesn’t make you think she’s the cutest ghost ever….are you okay? 🤣 She also has two, super hot (slightly scary), scientifically experimented on partners. Why would she want to choose between them when she could have both?! Max and Jake could not be more different but they’re both equally loveable. However, Jake is my favorite! his ritual scenes were some of my favorites and I LOVED the dark magic Sylvia created throughout this book. I absolutely cannot wait for her to continue on her dark romance journey!!

Something completely different from Sylvia, this is another side we hadn’t appreciated before. I was quite surprised—it’s different but still has that unique touch Sylvia brings to each of her stories. I suggest reading the TW/CW before starting, as there are some sensitive themes. I don’t usually read this gore genre, but let me tell you, it really surprised me. The story is intriguing, and Emma’s love interests do everything they can to keep her safe within the story’s context. This book is perfect for the Halloween season—spooky, gory, spicy, taboo. It’s a different world ready to be explored. You’ll learn to love the characters; they’re different from what we’re used to, but they’ll win you over all the same.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Plot - 4/5
Characters - 4/5
Spice - 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️+

This is definitely a different kind of book for Sylvia and explored pretty much every kind of taboo possible but I am here for it. A MFM/MMF book, Dead Emma focuses on our ghostly FMC, Emma, as she navigates a relationship with her stepbrother, Max and ex-boyfriend, Jake.

The spice scenes are HOT and not lacking throughout the book. Emma, Jake and Max have a wonderful blend of romance and sex in their relationship and it was so sweet to see Max accepting his Bi-flag at the end of the book.

This book does contain graphic elements and trigger warnings, so consider that prior to going in.

Of course I loved this! I really liked how there was no shying away from the MM scenes. Dark, funny, and course still silly. Spicy but had just enough of a plot to keep you wanting to know what was happening next. The spice that was there was HOT. I really did fall in love with each of the characters, even the mermaid!

I honestly have no idea where to start for this review.

"I can't stand to see you restricted. No one puts a fucking collar on my kitten."

I can say without a shadow of doubt that I have never read anything like this. This is so original!

"I have no fucking clue how I'll save her, but I won't let my Emma suffer. Ever."

This story follows Emma, Max and Jake. And like I really have no idea how to explain this without giving anything away. And honestly- I went in blind af and think you should too lol! So I'll post a couple quotes and tell you to read this if you are into:

✨️ taboo
✨️ the strange and morbid
✨️ weird kinks
✨️ monster men

"I live for you and I'd die for you and after I die, I will do everything I can do to be with you even then. Please, please, don't deny me."

Title: Dead Emma

Author: Sylvia Morrow

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Spice:🌶️🌶️🌶️

Length: 216 pages

Genre: Dark Paranormal Romance

Tropes: MMF, Taboo, Multiple POVs, Masked possessive MMC, Serial Unaliver MMC, Ghost FMC, Bi/Pan representation, Dark Magic, Science Experiments

Triggers: Lots of sex stuff, blood, gore, cannibalism, unaliving, masochism, sadism, step siblings

My thoughts:
Dead Emma was a trip… but it was so much fun!! Emma can come off a little selfish and whiny sometimes, but Max and Jake were just so much fun! The dynamic between the 3 of them was really well written and they all fit together so well. I especially loved that Emma was submissive to Max but that Jake was submissive to Emma but both men were protective over Emma and wanted her to be happy and safe. Their throuple relationship is so much fun and very believable… even though one is a ghost, one can regenerate almost any injury, and one is a headless half-man/half-robot-cyborg guy.
The magic system in Dead Emma is really interesting. The idea that a ghost would have to eat important parts of people to stay and be corporeal is interesting and well done in my opinion. Most of the time I found that to be funny and interesting, except for one part that did make me a little sick to my stomach involving Jake and Emma (IYKYK… I’m with Max… ewww). Every time something or someone new popped up in this world it was believable and made complete and total sense. I really want to know more about the Lab and the experiments that they do there.
Overall I really enjoyed Dead Emma! It’s not for everyone, but if you like a more unhinged paranormal dark romance, give it a shot!!

This was such a weird book. This has been on my kindle for a while and I kind of forgot what it was even about. Please read the TW’s before you read this book.
I swear this book had every possible TW you can imagine.

Step sibling taboo ✔️
Why-choose ✔️
Masochism✔️✔️
Cannibalism ✔️✔️✔️

So the basic plot of the book is that a group of dead people, undead? I don’t even know. Anyway, Emma is for sure dead. She was shot in the chest but her parents worked for a government entity that brings her back. In order for her to stick around she needs to eat flesh.
Max is her stepbrother who was also shot the same night as Emma, but he was shot in the head. They were able to save enough of his brain to make him still be him. But he doesn’t have a head somehow. He just walks around with a big mask in place of the head (not weird at all). He ends up having to become part of the government entity and they continue to do experiments on him so his body is very big and strong.
They meet Jake at the government entity, where said entity is making more undead(?) still not sure if everyone there is dead. Anyway, Jake can regenerate body parts. So if his finger is cut off, it grows back (you may see where this is going).
Emma and Jake had been dating before the book began (because home girl needs a snack from time to time) but everyone thought that Jake was killed in a tub of acid while on a mission . While he is “dead” Emma and Max hook up. But ta-da, Jake regenerates (it just takes a really long time). And this is where a thruple begins.

It has some very funny parts in it but I don’t know how many times I said out loud “what am I reading” or “what the f*ck”.

As for the characters, I kept going back and forth about Max. I think it’s because he was the most flip floppy character. But, in the end he was probably my favorite.

I have highlighted a few of the funnier areas of the book.
I’m not rating this book because it’s just not my cup of tea. So I don’t think it’s fair to rate it.
There are a lot of gory parts (I guess). But mostly WTF parts. So just be prepared or read the TW’s before diving into this book.

This story is wild. I can't even tell you how wild it was. I tried to explain to my friends what I was reading and I literally couldn't. It's wild and weird. But it's so good. There's soooooo many wild things that happens in this book. If you don't mind the triggers....its AMAZING. My only complaint is that it's short, there's so much that could've been explored in this particular story. More details that I wish I could've gotten. But it was still really good nevertheless.

Let's start with our Dead Emma. Our little ghost girl who is undeniably loved by those around her. Jess, Max and Jake. She's lucky to have people care about her so intensely. I loved watching their bonds. I love a good MFM relationship. Especially when all three partners love another equally.

Max, our dirty headless boy. Loving and supportive he was willing to do anything to please his girl. Kill, bring her body parts, the whole nine. It was cute. Especially seeing him try to deny his feelings for Jake. And don't even get me started on this man's obsession with bidets

And last but not least our Jake-y poo. Eager to please and loves with his whole heart. I respect a man who can let go of a grudge. He took everything in strides. I love the emotional maturity of it. And man oh man does this boy like pain. I also loved that all three of them loved one another without ever saying it to each other. I wish we got to hear more about how he came back though. I feel like it would've been a really good scene.

This book was W I L D. I was totally here for it. There was a few things I've never read before. It was interesting. I do advise reading the trigger warnings in it's entirety before. If nothing bothers you, it's an amazing story.

This is an ARC review!! Spoilers ahead!

This is the type of bat-shit crazy story only Sylvia Morrow can pull off. This book was macabre yet funny.
Here are some of my thoughts while reading:
- I loved the banter, especially between Max and Emma.
- I thought the concept of Emma having to consume human body parts was very interesting and made for a unique story, especially when you throw Jake and his regeneration into the mix.
- The results of the science experiments being so closely interwoven makes for a unique world and people who are tied together in very interesting ways. I hope Mary is gonna be ok now that everyone left the lake.
- Aunt Jess choosing not to come back as a ghost made for a very interesting discussion about life and what comes after death.
- All the pov's were very distinct and unique. Especially Max's personality shone through in the writting style during his chapters

Sylvia is not afraid to go down some strange roads which made this book very funny and very unique

My favorite quote:
“No matter how many times I have to be remade, it will always be for you.”

I don't think I was vibing with the writing? the dialogue felt kinda awkward and off and I didn't particularly care for any of the MCs nor did I feel like the chemistry or whatever that would have made me go, "yes! these three *need* to be end game". there were a few funny moments and the spicy times were okay but other than that? 🤷🏻‍♀️
ig it just wasn't for me haha. if you're in the mood for a cannibalistic ghost, her headless stepbrother and an old boyfriend who has freaky fast healing to all get together to save said ghost from the lab that experimented on them (and others) to make them not-totally-human when they were kids, maybe this is for you? idk their backstory was kinda vague but what little was discussed was kinda interesting? not enough that I feel the urge to want more but enough that it sorta kept me reading.

three povs, FMC (Emma), MMC1 (Max), MMC2 (Jake)
first person pov
sorta paranormal/monster
MMF

trigger/content warnings: cannibalism (on page & between MCs, gun violence, vore, dub con, choking, blood & gore, murder, experimenting on children, body horror (full TW list on author's website)

Have you ever watched those horror/comedy films that are really weird/quirky, full of dark and gruesome stuff and yet it's kind of funny and everyone's really nonchalant about all the unälıvıng going on? This book is like that - it's an absolute trip!
Have I got your ear? Cool, you might want to keep hold of that... otherwise, Max will feed it to his stepsister. Im not kidding - there is munching galore going on in this book, from a nibble on small body parts to d!ck munching...and I don't just mean sɛggsüally.
Speaking of sɛggsüal stuff, this book has quite the smörgåsbord - headless sɛx̌, risky invisible BJ, 3 player parties, snøwbällıng, MM scenes, pɛɛpholes and pɛggıng.
On top of all the munching and grinding going on, the MCs are a blast! There's sad girl casper, hørny frat-bro frankenator and simpy deadpotter.
Max (hørny frat-bro frankenator) has got to be my favourite, though. He was protective, weird, and chaotic AF - I loved him!
This book is definitely not going to be for everyone, but it absolutely was my sort of thing!

Dead Emma by Sylvia Morrow surprised the hell out of me — in the best way. I read the premise and got excited (because how could I not?), but usually when that happens I end up let down. Not this time.

Emma is dead…but not dead-dead. She’s kind of like a zombie, staying corporeal by snacking on body parts (yes, it’s as weird and hilarious as it sounds). And then there’s Max — the jerk of a stepbrother who’s supposed to be keeping her fed but has been MIA for months. When he shows back up? Oh boy. Let’s just say the forbidden tension is palpable.

And don’t even get me started on the dead ex-boyfriend. Sylvia Morrow took every “this is so wrong but I’m loving it” trope and just ran with it. The book had me laughing out loud in the most inappropriate moments and grinning at the absolute chaos unfolding on the page.

It’s weird. It’s twisted. It’s darkly funny. And honestly? I thoroughly enjoyed every unhinged second of it. If you’re a fan of offbeat paranormal romance with a whole lot of morally gray and an unapologetic sense of humor, Dead Emma is worth the ride.

"For a dead girl, I've got a damn good life."

3.75 / 5.00

Pleae read the trigger warnings before picking up this book. I read them, and I thought I knew what I was getting into, but holy shit this was way more unhinged than I thought it would be!

Dead Emma was my first real attempt at reading unhinged smut, and I'm not sure how I feel. I think I would have liked it a lot better if two of the main characters weren't step-siblings and if there wasn't quite the amount of shame fucking going on. I know that's what some people are into, and it's fine for them, but it got a little uncomfortable for me.

The writing got a bit sloppy or disjointed at times, but I was still impressed that this was a relatively cohesive story with some plot. I'd definitely give this author another shot!

No song recommendation for this one. I need to process it a bit more before I can even think about what song might be a good fit.

What did I just read? I was aware of the content notes, knew what to expect, and still I managed to be surprised by the combination of events Sylvia Morrow has managed to put together in this book. This story is at times really quite gruesome, which feels surprising considering must of the book is three mushily in love people enthusiastically getting it on.

The writing here is at times very choppy, with some disjointed sections. I struggled a bit with this in the beginning, but once I got into the story I flew through it. The plot is wild. The charcters are wild. The smut is smutting away (with some gruesome smut bits too). By the end of the story I found myself hoping for more from these pervy weirdos - I hope Morrow writes a sequal. This is truly the weirdest thing I've read this year and I'm pretty certain I mean that as a compliment.

I read an advance copy of this book, my thoughts are very much my own.
