I had a hard time choosing a star rating because I didn't love this first volume, yet I couldn't put it down. It's written pretty well, with interesting characters. However, I feel like the characters are always kept at arm's length, and even though I'm reading the heroine's thoughts, I still don't totally get her. The dialogue is good and the banter was funny, and that plus the chemistry was probably my favorite aspect of the book. Other than noting little depth in the characters, I kept feeling like the flow was off. Sometimes it seemed to read fast and perfectly-like a great serial- and then a paragraph would be written in a disjointed voice (short sentences, repetitive descriptions, etc). It just left me a bit perplexed over the story. I'm going to read at least the next volume, so I'm hoping the awkward aspect minimizes and the story blossoms.
