I had two childhood dreams: to shift into a wolf, and to win Nordin Stormsson’s forbidden heart.
My first dream shattered the day my mother confessed I wasn’t a shifter, but a valkyrie stranded in a land far from my people. My second was crushed when Nordin rejected me…only to claim another as his mate.
So I ran. Heartbroken, I crossed beyond the wards in search of my birth clan. But freedom came at a cost. Dragons, vampyrs, and enemy wolves stalked me through the dark. They weren’t the only ones who came after me, though.
Nordin came too. He seized me before they could, stealing my body and then my heart.
For a time, I dared to dream once more, to imagine a future with Nordin in the land of ice and wolves.
Until I uncovered his most closely guarded secret.
A truth about my past.
One that ruined us all.
The Ice Beyondis the first book in a fiercely romantic, Norse-inspired fantasy filled with forbidden love, warring supernaturals, and a spirited heroine who must decide whether to cling to the life she was given or step into the legacy she never asked for.
Olivia is a USA Today best-selling author of romantasy. When she’s not swooning over her characters’ steamy escapades, or plotting their demise, you can find her sipping wine and crafting her next twisted, romantic masterpiece, all while trying to convince her children and leading man that she loves them more than her laptop.
The Ice Beyond is the first book in a new series by Olivia Wildenstein, The Empress of Thorns. This is my first book by this author after discovering her on instagram and being instantly intrigued by the sound of this new book of hers. And while it wasn't quite a 4-star read, I'm still excited for the next book.
The Ice Beyond is inspired by Norse mythology and the fantasy world that the author created felt like a breath of fresh air. I loved the idea of this pack of wolf shifters in the north, where the female main character Zas was adopted into. Zas has always believed she was a wolf too but when she finds out this has in fact been a lie and kept from her by not only her mother but also her long-time crush Nordin, she feels her life falling apart.
As much as I loved the world inside this book, I couldn't say the same for most of the characters. Zas was very childish, insecure and jealous especially when it came to Nordin, even when they weren't together yet. We meet Zas when she's 17 up until 19 so I can understand her character for being childish and insecure since she is still so young. I mean, most people were a little like that at this age. So I get this part of Zas' character and maybe she'll have more character growth in the sequel.
But Nordin? Nordin really got on my nerves. When he found out Zas has feelings for him, he doesn't want anything to do with it. Until suddenly he changes his mind randomly. It felt a bit out of the blue after, in my opinion, needlessly pushing Zas away and making her feel like it could never happen between them. I felt like Nordin definitely kept Zas down, especially when she started mentioning wanting to leave the pack to go explore her own heritage and find out how and why she got seperated from her people. Nordin wouldn't hear any of it. No spoilers but I also didn't like it when something came to light that Nordin did. No matter if he thinks he did it for a good reason or not. If I were Zas I wouldn't be able to forgive him at all.
Aside from the wolf shifters, the book also has vampyres (who ride dragons!) and valkyries. I'm most fascinated by the valkyries. The book didn't give much information about the valkyries although I hope that will change in books two. But we got quite a few scenes with vampyres that made me only more curious about them. According to the wolves they are evil but I'm not too sure about that after the ending, which did make me really excited for the next book.
Wildenstein knows how to reel me in. Thank you so much for an early ARC copy. I’m a huge fan of the Kingdom of crows series and was eager to read new work from Olivia.
I had a lot of fun with this one. I do love a good Viking tale. Although this is a bit of a mix, with Viking wolf shifters, vampires and valkyries. One issue I had with the Kingdom of Crows series was the story getting a bit convoluted and confusing to readers. I had that issue again with this read. The world building and lore get a bit confusing. Which makes it hard to understand fully what’s happening or be able to predict what could happen next.
I really enjoyed the ending. And am EAGER to learn more about these vamps. Kjell anyone? Listen I’m all ears lol.
One other critique is that the dialogue can go back and forth a bit between a more dated and modern style of speech. One minute they sound like Vikings and the next they sound like modern youth… would love a little more consistency between speech and characters.
Loved this read. And will absolutely be returning for book 2.
Olivia has delivered another captivating romantasy with this beautifully imagined Norse-inspired world and a slow-burn romance full of yearning that delighted my angst-loving heart. The ending left me breathless and begging for more!
I recieved an arc on this book and am so thankfully to Olivia for the opportunity!
I usually love Olivia's books, but this was a bit of an exception for me. I struggled to connect the Zas from the story to the journals, they seemed like 2 different people and as a reader in her 30s, felt very immature.
The world also felt a bit too big. From the onset knowing there were shifters, vampires and valkyries was a lot to try to take in and understand thr dynamics.
I didnt ever really get why Zas and Nordin even liked each other. it was such an instant love that I missed any sort of relationship building with them. I never really got over the fact that he partially raised her either. Nordin was hard for me to like. I kept wanting another love interest to join the page.
Zas was too much of a damsel here. Each time she got into trouble, she needed rescuing from her mother, cousin or Nordin. This felt like too much of a pattern and restricted our FMC from coming into her own.

This insanely beautiful slow burn fantasy romance kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. There is incredible worldbuilding, based on Norse mythology. We see strong, broody wolf shifters. And there are dragons! 😍 Zaskja and Nordin are incredible characters. I loved everything about this and cannot wait to see where the story goes next. Thank you to Olivia Wildenstein for the e-arc of this beautiful book!
I'm a big fan of the Kingdom of Crows series by this author, so I was excited when I had the opportunity to receive an ARC copy of this upcoming release.
This storyline is a bit of a mix of fantasy and paranormal, with wolves, vampyres and valkeryie, but we only spend time with the wolves. Zas, our FMS, was adopted by the pack and lives with her adopted mother hoping and praying she'll fit in with them, but discovering information that's been kept from her.
In between Zas' boughts of insecurity, jealousy, and her journal rantings about her enduring love for her wolf, we don't get much information on the inner workings of the pack and how they fit into this world. There's a war going on, but it's not between them. Then they want to go to war, but for what reason, really? Land or Zas? Are the vampyres really the evil bastard everyone says? How would they know, they don't talk to them? I was left with many questions and not a lot of information on how the puzzle pieces all fit together.
My other issue was connecting with the characters. Some were a bit childish and spoiled (Zas and Saga), making it hard to connect with them. Our MMC was overprotective, bossy and then we decided it was OK, all in with Zas. Uh...we're supposed to be all in with this relationship because you decided it was OK, Nordin? Nah...I don't think so.
I really wanted more from this. I wanted Zas to truly understand her heritage (or as much as she could get). It felt like she wanted to be off to discover that and then it went to the back burner. I felt like she kept hoping the pack would fully embrace her and she didn't need to worry about her heritage. But with that playing such a large part of the storyline, I would have thought someone would have started to help educate her.
I'm not sure what's going to happen with book two and the vampyre king, but hopefully some of the information that I need will be explained there.
I absolutely loved Olivia’s Kingdom of Crows series so when the opportunity to read this new series I sprinted towards it!
This new world has Norse/viking vibes that includes wolf shifters, vampires, and valkyrie.
Zas has been waiting her entire life to finally embrace her wolf. She is a young and impulsive girl who comes learns she is not the person she thought she was and struggles to understand her new reality while keeping it a secret from her wolf shifter pack. She also has been pinning after a much older Nordin who has been a guardian figure in her life and the future alpha of the pack.
This story is a coming of age/figuring who where you fit in the world. Zas and Nordin’s relationship is both forbidden and toxic at times. He is a VERY possessive MMC who struggles to find a way for them to be together. Olivia Wildenstein is definitely creating a foundation in this book for how their relationship dynamic will change in future books as more obstacles and character growth arise for Zas.
There is also lots of shenanigans and betrayal going on amongst the characters which makes it fun to see what the final reveals are at the end of the book. If you enjoyed Olivia’s previous books then you will definitely enjoy this new series!
A Norse inspired fantasy that I didn’t know that I needed! OMG, the author combined two things that I love the most. A fantasy world with shifters, and forbidden love. *Squeal!* The world building was amazing, and I absolutely love Zaskja. Following her story and her journal entries were really engaging. The journal entries made her feel so real. She’s a complex character who can be mouthy and is a fighter. Zas craves for more in her life and she must decide which path she will take. I’m rooting for Zas, and Nord. I absolutely love these two. There are a few more characters and other villains like vampyres, dragons, and valkyries!! I’m so addicted to this new world! The twists and secrets revealed were so good! If you’re looking for an addictive read, be sure to check this one out. This is one of my favorite reads this year.
A very special thanks to the author for the gifted copy.
Favorite quotes: If anything happens to you…” My throat clogs with emotion. “So long as you’re waiting for me, there’s nothing in this world that’ll keep me from coming home. No silver blade…no winged beast…no fanged monster.”
“Beyond Asgard. Beyond Ragnarök.”
I adore you, my Wolf. Stay safe. Stay mine.
“..... you fucking psychopath” “Lies matter. Because lies turn into truths if repeated enough times.”
This book is the best kind of slow burn, forbidden romance with a MMC who would kill for his love.
The Ice Beyond has: Wolf Shifters Valkyrie Dragons Vampyr Norse Mythology and so much more.
Zas was found as a young child, alone in the woods, by Nordin. She is raised by Nordin's aunt as her own and a member of their wolf pack, believing herself to be a shifter. That is one until one day she learns she isn't, only to realize everything that she had known to be true may not be.
This journey is full of hope, dreams, yearning, heartache, betrayal, love, and a lot of questions.
Zas & Nordin are now within my heart forever & I can not wait for book two.
Biggest thank you in the world to Olivia for the gift of reading this early. I found her work beginning with the Kingdom of Crows and have been a huge fan ever since.
Sometimes you pick up a book and you just know within the first few chapters that it’s going to be special. By 20% into The Ice Beyond, I already felt it in my bones, this was going to be a five-star read, and wow did it exceed every expectation.
The world-building pulled me in right away, but what really anchored me were the characters: Nordin and Zas. Their dynamic is pure magic. Nordin, the wolf, is the perfect mix of fierce protector and tender caregiver, and every small way he looked after Zas just melted me. Zas, on the other hand, has such a compelling presence that balances beautifully with Nordin. Together, their slow burn romance had me giggling, blushing, and kicking my feet like a lovestruck teenager.
The chemistry between them is electric, one of those rare connections that feels both heart-meltingly sweet and scorching hot. It’s the kind of tension that makes you savour every page, waiting for the moment sparks finally ignite. And let me just say: when they did? Absolute perfection.
And just when I thought I had the story figured out, bam, a plot twist that blindsided me. I didn’t see it coming, mostly because I was too enthralled by their budding relationship, but it added another layer of depth and excitement that made the book even better.
Nordin himself deserves his own shoutout because he might honestly crack my Top 5 book husbands of all time. The way he loves and protects while still being this fierce, broody wolf? Chef’s kiss.
And then there’s the ending. Let me tell you, it was RUDE. The kind of cliffhanger that makes you want to scream at the author and beg for the sequel immediately. Because the thought of seeing Nordin completely lose his cool? Yeah, I need that in my life ASAP.
This book had everything: heart, tension, laughter, swoon-worthy moments, and a twist that left me reeling. If you love slow burns, super protective/possessive MMCs, and a romance that will make you both giggle and melt, The Ice Beyond is a must-read.
OLIVIA!! Ugh, yet again this woman absolutely slays my heart with her stunning writing and addictive storytelling.
I was immediately immersed and felt connected to this new world with strong Viking vibes. The FMC is young but relatable to all women in my opinion. The mother/daughter bond was a new trope for me that I thoroughly enjoyed. I really appreciated the inclusion of natural childbirth and midwifery in the raw and instinctual way of true birth and motherhood.
The twists and turns in this story were fun, interesting, and surprising. I see a huge twist on the horizon and I am so here for it. This book is part of a series and ends on a cliffhanger! I cannot wait to see where Olivia takes Zaskja.
If you like shifters, Vikings, vampires, dragons, Celtic lore, mystery, betrayal, magic, and touch-her-and-die vibes - this one is absolutely for you!
You can find this review of The Ice Beyond on my blog, Heart's Content!
The biggest most grateful shout out to the author for giving me the amazing chance of reading The Ice Beyond early in exchange for an honest review!
I first read Wildenstein’s work when she released Feather. If I’m not wrong, it was an early copy and, believe me, it left an impression. Even if I don’t remember everything about Feather, I remember this: it devastated me.
I found her once again—coincidentally—last year when I dived into her Kingdom of Crows series. I was suffering a difficult slump at the time and Wildenstein’s story caught me by the heart and never let go—so much so that I was reluctant to start my most anticipated read of that year that had just released because I wanted to finish all the books in Wildenstein’s romantic fantasy series. Outside of, of course, the fact that her work pulled me right out of my brutal slump.
I’ve been following her work since then and have been checking out which of her books to start next when I found that she had a new book coming. The Ice Beyond. Honestly, I’d have jumped on a chance to read anything she wrote, but once I read the theme for this one? SOLD.
I’m going to start with characters—which is quite unusual for me—because with Wildenstein‘s work it’s always the characters and their growth through the series that has readers in a chokehold. She brings a certain naïveté, strength and personality to her FMCs in a way I haven’t seen in a long time, but makes so much sense given the age and experiences of her protagonists when the story begins. But somehow Wildenstein always always manages to write into her characters a subtle thread of resilience and wisdom that only grows with time, just like our love for them. I do feel that while Zas was young, and with that of course comes all the impulses, doubts and fears of a youngster, she was also smart in important ways. I think another thing about Wildenstein’s world is that her secondary and tertiary characters have a presence, personality and place in her pages with nearly the same degree of importance as her main characters. Expect to feel love, anger, frustration and more with most of them, because I certainly did.
Wildenstein’s writing (which obviously doesn’t come second to her characters because it is what birthed them, but for the sake of dramatics, it comes second) is quite possibly a mastermind in the making. *Mastermind by Taylor Swift plays in the background* I think when it comes to Wildenstein’s books, the villain isn’t always the villain and at the same time the villain is often exactly who you think they are. If you’ve seen a character on page and you’re feeling something … something that you think you shouldn’t be feeling; remember it. Keep it in mind and don’t tell yourself you’re imagining things. Nothing Wildenstein writes is to make you feel anything but the truth, so often even before you’ve intellectually arrived at some conclusion, you’ve intuitively understood the subtleties woven in the emotions, decisions and feelings written into the book. Always believe that you’ll be surprised by how right your feelings were and always believe that you’re playing right into Wildenstein’s hands. She knows exactly what you’re thinking, because she’s making you think it.
Please do read this book keeping a door open in your heart to constantly remind yourself that there’s this HUGE possibility that all Wildenstein is doing is setting the stage and you will possibly get everything you want and need if you have just wait and watch. She always makes magic and I have a feeeeeling about something and I really want to be right about it. Really really. *fingers crossed*
The book was not small, I don’t have the exact page count, but I think I took about 10 total hours of reading to finish it and I’m a (fairly) fast reader. The narration—that’s written in single person perspective of the female protagonist—keeps you rooted to the pages and the story rushes by at a ruthless pace. However, it still gives all the time, space and importance to the more emotional scenes and the quietly building plot underneath it all. All of this keeps you bound to the book until the very end. I would know, given that I was reading in the car, I was reading at a friend’s, I was reading as I fell asleep and I woke up to do this all over again.
Reading The Ice Beyond is the single most emotional, nerve wracking, frustrating, painful and hope filled journey. I was constantly stuck oscillating emotionally between what was currently happening on page and everything that could possibly go wrong. It was great. Highly recommend.
The plot in this story much like everything the writing hides, is wrapped in thorny branches that dare you to tread their way. Your heart and mind are nothing but puppets that Wildenstein pulls the strings to. So it’s safe to say, that the actual plot is hidden and will likely only reveal itself in book two. I enjoy greatly Wildenstein’s style of storytelling, where she leads us through roads that seem right, perfect and well made until she drops you in the middle of the ocean and flips that perspective on its head. If I’m not wrong, which is both a big if and a highly plausible if, I expect Wildenstein to take us down the rabbit hole of realisation. Can’t. Wait.
Now, the world building. A lot of revelations of the plot and world building are tied into the character development. Which means, until there’s room for the FMC to develop, grow and break the binds of the existing situations of her life, we aren’t learning too much either. So of course, book one is the stage that’s been designed and established to bear the weight of the actual world that’s going to be revealed in book two. That’s not to say that book one doesn’t do its fair share of speaking about the rules and workings of the world, because it does. But, it’s only a small, almost protected perspective that we’re allowed to see. If you read the book, you will understand why.
I just want to say: I can feel it. I just know there’s something big coming. It might confuse you, frustrate you if you haven’t read her work before, but trust me. She’s so good at building her series. Hold my hand, let’s tread this path of faith together.
Five stars!!
As always please do check trigger warnings before reading, there’re themes in this book that can be difficult for some.
Inspired by Norse Mythology but make it paranormal with shifters, vampires, and dragons. Count me in. I absolutely devoured this book.
Main Characters-Zaskja and Nordin. Zas has always loved Nordin but he’s her adopted cousin so to speak and the one to find her alone as a child, assumably abandoned and he had to fight his pack to keep her. He will be alpha one day and every decision he makes is important.
I love the world building and all the side characters. Drama everywhere. Zas is both strong and vulnerable. She’s… going through a lot after some big news and changes in her life and it’s been a wild ride for Zas to figure out what she’s wants out of her destiny.
You know some authors who write so well that it’s hard to pick a chapter to stop and take a break at? Because the story flows so well and it’s nonstop, action and suspense that it’s hard to close that book? Or maybe the spice be spicin? It’s this book. It was the angst, the plot twist, the suspense, the betrayals, and the ending. I’m definitely invested and dying for the second book already!
“So long as you’re waiting for me, there’s nothing in this world that’ll keep me from coming home. No silver blade…no winged beast…no fanged monster.”
Zas may be one of the most realistic FMCs that I've read to date. She's pushed to do things by love for her family and friends without thinking about the consequences she will face. The pacing of the plot unfurls at a beautiful cadence and I felt the need to continue reading after every chapter because they always ended with just enough to keep you wanting more. Nordin is extremely overprotective in a way that's borderline a red flag but we forgive him because he's 7ft tall and hot. (I get it Zas, I really do) The last third of the book was full of so much action, betrayal, twists, and spice 🤭, that I couldn't stop. Slight spoiler that it ends in a cliffhanger that will leave you begging Olivia for the next book. I am blessed by Fenrir to have been able to read this before everyone else, thank you to Olivia for the opportunity.
2025 was the year I found Olivia Wildenstein's and I am so glad I did and I was really excited to receive an early ARC copy to review.
There were many things I loved about the book ... the setting, the plot twists, most of the characters! I really enjoyed the Viking inspired world and honestly I would have loved to understand it a bit better, especially the broader setting with the different races and some of the lore surrounding them.
I love the potential of our female main character of Zas, I feel like she is very naive and young in this book but I'm hoping for a growth story arc. I really want her to understand her heritage ... frankly I want to understand it better too! I'm hopeful we will get more of that as the series progresses. I loved the protectiveness of the MMC, but I didn't like him as much as Lore from the Kingdom of the Crows. My favorite character was probably Zas' mom!
Curious about where things ended, and I am excited to pick up book 2!
ARC Review | The Ice Beyond by Olivia Wildenstein ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Huge thank you to the author for the chance to read this early!
I ABSOLUTELY devoured this book. I stayed up way past my bedtime, and the next morning I seriously considered calling in sick just to keep reading. (Spoiler: I didn’t, but I looked like a sleep-deprived troll all day, but it was totally worth it.😂)
There were so many twists I didn’t see coming. I was constantly on my toes and had no clue what would happen next, and I LOVED that. This story has wolves, vampires, Norse mythology, Viking romance, and just the right amount of grit and gore. If that’s what you’ve been looking for you need this book on your TBR when it drops! Or maybe skip the TBR and go straight to to reading it😉
Jaskja and Nordin are now permanent residents in my brain. I’m already counting down the days until book 2. ❤️
I couldn’t put this book down- I finished it in 24 hours!!
Although the story felt a tad slow at points, and I wish the pacing had been a bit quicker, the world and plot has been set up so flawlessly.
Our FMC, Zas, is naive and childish at times, but that’s the point- she’s so sheltered that at the beginning of the book, all she’s really focusing on is her crush. I loved seeing her try to break out of her shell, whilst making mistakes (which is natural and so human).
The romance with the MMC, Nordin, is rough- unrequited love, forbidden romance, secrets, age gap- but Zas is tenacious and headstrong enough to fight for what she wants.
I think this book is perfect for fans of To Bleed A Crystal Bloom and for fans of anything vikings x fantasy.
The ending was cruel, but I’m now on the edge of my seat awaiting book two. I’m ready for any twists and reveals that I thinkkkk may be next
I was really so excited to begin a new journey with Olivia Wildenstein because I enjoyed my time reading the Kingdom of Crow series - even though the last installment had me cringing a little at the 'FOMO' and 'unaliving' quips. The Ice Beyond, unfortunately (in my opinion), continues the trend and I absolutely hate that I didn't love this book. Honestly I struggle to think of the Zaskja in the journal entries and the Zaskja in the narrative as the same person because, even though she's relatively young at the tender age of 19 for the most of the book, the journal entries read as far younger. Especially the sidebars in the parenthesis. I also struggle to imagine a young woman who uses the word 'onus' in speaking would also use the word 'unaliving' in a situation that didn't quite fit the potentially humorous bit.
I feel like a Boomer - but I swear that I'm not! I'm grateful for having gotten to read this as an ARC but this isn't a series I imagine myself continuing. Though I do imagine that there will be a lot of people, particularly those in the new adult category, who will really like this and can more easily see themselves in a character like Zaskja.
🗓️ TBD Expect 👉🏼 Romantasy, Shifters (Wolves), Dragons, Valkyrie, Vampires, On the Brink of War, Forbidden Love, Age Gap, Secrets, Slow Burn Spice
Almost the entire book… I had a feeling. But then towards the end I talked myself out of a theory. And then when I got to the author’s note I just started laughing—because I was right! But you know, then I was wrong 😆
This magical world was so much fun to get lost in. I LOVE THE WAY OLIVIA WILDENSTEIN WRITES!!!! She swept me away and got me so invested in Zas and Nordin and their whole pack. So much happened in this book and I am here for how obsessed they are with each other.
I’m loving not only the pack dynamics and the 5 different wolf packs. But how they also have treaties and political alliances and wards maintain peace with the other magical beings.
Truly, so much fun. And such a delicious slow burn. I love the addition of Zas’ journal entries and how her whole personality shone through.
I love that she never game up. Never stopped fighting. Never backed down. And I cannot wait to see where the next book takes her. And a shoutout to Eria for being the best mother ever 😍
First of all, I absolutely loved the world building of this book. I think I would give it 5 stars based on that alone. It’s so unique but never felt like it was an information overload all at once. It was all designed so well and filtered throughout the book cohesively. Just the way she brought together Norse mythology with the fantasy elements was so well done. Every one of Olivia’s worlds just gets better than the last!
Now onto the characters. I loved Zaskja. If like that we were able to see her from different ages and see how she grew throughout the book. You could see her grow from childish to a more mature woman and I can’t wait to see this develop further in the next book. I also loved the air of mystery around what she was and her trying to find her way with people who were not like her.
I liked Nordin as the MMC and could understand why at first he was reluctant to be with Zaskja despite his feelings for her. I loved the forbidden aspect of them being together too. It add so much tension, and it felt so good once things began to resolve. But while I did like him, I’m didn’t become so attached to him that I would be overly upset if another MMC walked onto the scene…..
Which leads me to Taeric. Not much is known about him, but damn do I want to know more! I am in serious need of book 2!
I received my very first ARC, how lucky am I that it came from an author I already love! 😊 I really enjoyed getting to know Zas, the wolves and the world Olivia built. The story pulled me in quickly and kept me wanting more with every chapter. I'm a little conflicted about Nordin (it’s giving Tamlin lol ), but I will trust the journey. I can't wait to see if my hunches are right (No spoilers here). Is it too soon to ask for the next book??
Stars - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice - 🌶🌶🌶🌶 Favorite Character - Zaskja Favorite Moment - The chaos after Zaskja runs into the Wilds.
"The Ice Beyond" was like a lingering kiss.
Slow and thoughtful, forceful when needed, leaving you wanting more.
The story is about Zaskja and Nordin. Members of the Vales - a tribe of wolf shifters beholden to Fenrir.
Both very possessive main characters. Zaskja secretly loves him, but Nordin's obligated to duty and betrothed to another. Something he can't easily change, being son to the Alpha.
The story took its time to set up the magical division of the realms, Ljosamär, Isamär, and Hasamär; which creature they belong vampires, wolves, and valkyrie; what Norse god they worship Odin, Fenrir, and Freya; then to explain how Zaskja fits within it. She comes of age and learns many truths in a short period of time. She becomes jealous and possessive of Nordin. Many obstacles in her way to reaching him.
I very much enjoyed reading as Zaskja came into her own. Meek and small, eventually gaining confidence and asserting her place.
Some of her friends, I found childish. Saga, particularly felt unrefined most the time, more there to push the plot and create trouble over support Zaskja. She felt out of place, till she didn't, then again was askew. Her unreliability and some of Zaskja unfounded jealousy are the only reasons I can't commit to a full rating. Otherwise, wonderfully done. I didn't think vampires and Norse Mythology would work, but it did, and the suspense! I am curious already for the next installment and learning how much stronger Zaskja can become.
The Ice Beyond is the start of a thrilling new fantasy world and I am already obsessed. I loved all the attention to detail and character development, some were very complex and some definitely gave off mysterious vibes.
I love Nordin and Zaskja, their forbidden romance is unpredictable and exhilarating. Their journey to be together is fraught with danger, as secrets, lies and betrayals stand in their way.
Nordin is a Wolf Shifter, he's strong, dependable, dangerous, possessive and sinfully seductive. He's loyal to his pack and will kill to protect those he loves.
Zaskja has been through a lot and still keeps fighting, for herself and her Wolf. I'm looking forward to seeing her in action when more secrets are revealed. What will it all mean and will I still be team Nordin and Zaskja..Im dying to find out.
There are so many fantastic characters in this series. I loved Saga, she was a hoot and I adored Mor too. I want to know more about the mysterious Taeric, he is very intriguing. There's definitely more to him than meets the eye, I can't wait for more of his secrets.
Bring on the next book, That bloody Cliffy OMFG!! I'm beyond excited but a bit terrified too. 👏
| fantasy romance | paranormal romance | viking inspired | norse mythology | wolf shifters | pack life | vampires | valkyries | spicy | forbidden romance | taboo romance | protector | fated mated | (not) cousins | pack politics | first in a series | romantasy | grump x sunshine | hidden identity |
Is this book spicy? Yes. Would I recommend this book? Without hesitation.
One thing about me: I am a huge fan of stories written by Olivia Wildenstein and The Ice Beyond is the first book in a brand new series from Olivia, and it's something completely fresh and exciting from her. Drawing on Norse mythology and Viking lore, Olivia takes historical and cultural threads and spins them into lush, fantastical worlds that are as gripping as they are addictive.
One of the most striking elements of this story is the way the FMC, Zas, writes in a personal journal throughout the book. These letters, while meant for someone special, add an intimate layer to the narrative. They transported me back to my youth when emotions felt too big for my body, and writing to purge them became a necessary lifeline to sanity. Zas experiences real growth here, but it’s important to remember her age and sheltered upbringing. She’s not instantly likable, and I appreciated that honesty. At 18 or 19, I wasn’t either.
The story blends mythological roots with paranormal fantasy: wolf shifters, pack dynamics and politics, vampires, Valkyries… and I have no doubt Olivia has many more surprises in store for both the world and the characters. One thing about Olivia? She is going to spin a story so expertly that by the end of it, you won't believe where you've ended up.
Reading this gave me flashbacks to The House of Beating Wings series. I was so sure about so many things in that series, only to end up completely turned around and looking into the face of something I never saw coming. That unpredictability is part of what keeps me hooked on Olivia’s writing; she doesn’t just tell you a story, she makes you question what the story even is.
I have a sneaking suspicion this series, much like Kingdom of Crows, will be packed with twists, betrayals, and reveals that will leave us reeling. And the wait for the next book? Utter agony.
I’m all in for this series. Olivia, my darling, consider me sat.
For those wondering: if you’re craving a taboo fantasy romance that you can (and will) rationalize as not taboo, this is your sign to read The Ice Beyond, or at least add it to your TBR until we have an official release date.
I highly recommend The Ice Beyond by Olivia Wildenstein. This was easily a 5-star read for me.
Want to find out what a heroine does when the hero messes up? Learn with our young Zaskja:
“Can you stop f* jumping into frozen bodies of water, love?”
She is brilliant at putting him in his place, so much that he may leave his “by the book” ways 😏
All this while being the most romantic tomboy smith girl ever!!! Yes, she writes him love letters!
Love when the author trusts you to understand how a smart heroine finds the truth behind lies in a way that feels like you are there with her (you know, like in the never ending story! … reference for the old folks) The mother daughter relationship is strained, but oh my, I think we need to give the best award for best flawed mom to a certain jordmor, midwife in Norwegian. Yes, this is a Norse inspired series with wolf (my wolf) shifters, Valkyries, Vampyrs and other monsters 🥰
I love Olivia’s worlds, specially her female characters and this was no different.
I’m left with this cliffhanger that left me in a WTF! To a wonderful “can’t be mad with the author” author’s note.
Note: if you are squishy about relationships that start as a child and only matures in adult age, then maybe think twice. This is a fantasy with possessive shifters, so I’m fine with it
I’m an Olivia W fan, so I was ecstatic when I received this ARC
The Ice Beyond is a slow burn romantasy involving magic wielding valkyrie's, viking style ice wolves, vampiric dragonriders, a possessive mc with extreme touch her and die vibes, betrayal's of epic proportions and a deadly Valkyrian curse that is slowly killing its host. What more could anyone possible ask for in a book? This is probably going to end up being my absolute favourite story that this author has ever written.
It has everything a romantasy lover could ever need, a complicated magic system, off the charts steamy chemistry between the two main characters, forbidden love between the orphaned girl with a hidden ancestry and the serious brooding wolf who found her and hilarious side characters bringing in the comedic value and the loyal bestie vibes. The world-building as usual is well-planned, well-paced and so intricately detailed it creates such a immersive experience the reader instantly gets lost in the pages of the world, forgetting about real life entirely taking us on one emotional journey. The culture we are introduced too, the language, every detail about the pack, the hierarchy, including her own unique twists to make another wolf shifter, vampire story original and completely her own.
Zaskja is the main fmc, a young orphan girl living with wolves and desperately hoping to unlock her magic, join the pack and claim her hearts desire as her mate. She's young, impulsive and gets into so much trouble but Nordin, Mor and Saga are there to help pull her out of it. There are times when she appears reckless and extremely childish putting others in danger with her less than thought out plans but so many secrets have been kept from her how could she make any other choice. In an attempt to keep her safe, they've stifled her, excluded her from the truth, and left her completely unprepared and vulnerable for the threats that are just beyond the wards.
Nordin is the Alpha's son, her best friend's older brother, and nothing less than the deepest desire of her heart. He is everything we love in an MC, brooding, loyal, overprotective, doting, and so possessive forget touch her and die, Nordin is look at her and die vibes. Focused and driven, he arrows towards his goals with unwavering intent, to become alpha of the Vales and to protect Zaskja from everything, no matter the costs because nothing is too high a price to pay. There are also times when I think he is also arrogant and prideful, having worked himself to be one if not THE strongest most formidable wolf around, he believes he can take on anything and gets hurt when Zaskja fears not that he would lose but that she could be without him. The chemistry between them is magnetic, electric and frightening when you consider this authors usual mo when it comes to the men and relationships in her books which I sincerely hope that she has decided to take a break from and go down a new angle but the authors note at the end has me worried.
Speechless! Overall, that is how I felt when I finished this book, that and an intense need for the next book in the series. The thing about this authors books is that as soon as you start you can't put it down, she sucks you into her incredible world's with her amazing characters. Nothing else matters except, reading as fast as you can to find out what happens next. Even when your brain reminds you as you progress that it's just one book and your getting close to the end so slow down to problong your enjoyment your just so unable to! Now to patiently 😉 wait for the next book!
I was extremely lucky to receive an arc of this, and I could not be more greatful because I think this is gonna be my new fantasy obsession! Ok first of all, super rude to end on that cliffhanger!! I need to know what happens next!!!! Second, this book was so good! I was STRESSED the whole time, like full anxiety because I didn’t trust anyone, ever! There was one twist I saw coming, but other than that my jaw kept dropping over and over again, especially in the second half as things kept unfolding at super speed! I loved this world, the wolves are super interesting, and Norse mythology is one of my favorites, so I love how that was built into the story. I can’t wait for books 2 and beyond so I can learn more about the Valkyrie’s, and the dragons and vampires can come into play more. I’m already on the dragons side even if I don’t trust anyone still, I just love dragons so much! 😂 I really love Olivia’s writing, her books are long, yes, but they keep me riveted start to finish, and they feel unique in the romantasy world. This was a slow burn, and I really loved that, I also love that even at the end there is still a lot more that can happen in Zaskja and Nordin’s relationship, so you don’t feel like ok great, they’re already together, so why do I have to read 4 more books about them? No I need all 4 books immediately! I have been left with so many questions, and I can’t wait for more people to read this so we can talk about it all, and then I can’t wait for book 2 to come out so I can have some questions answered, but also I’m sure add more to my list! Loved this so much!
The Ice Beyond is a great Viking-esque world with interesting magic. I liked the ice wolves and the way certain aspects of Viking culture, like hair, were woven into the story, while mixing in fantasy to create Isamär. I also really appreciated the way Zaskja’s journal entries were tucked into the book. Even though the whole story is told from her perspective, I enjoyed that additional level of personal insight into her feelings and the way that she used writing as a safe space to process her emotions. I found the world, the magic, and the story to be engaging, and I am definitely invested in this series.
My issue with the story was the romance: Zaskja and the MMC’s chemistry just felt off… their relationship just wasn’t clicking for me the way other great couples do. Maybe (hopefully) that was on purpose, and I’ll feel vindicated in book 2. But as I was reading, I found myself constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop, and that made it difficult to experience the development of their feelings and relationship as it blossomed. I felt bad wondering when something would bring a devastating end to Zaskja’s great love, and I guiltily found myself rooting against them.
Overall, I think this was a well-written and thoughtful story and I felt like I could really feel and see all the characters and settings. I do think Zaskja has some growing up / character development to do, but I am eager to see how that plays out in the future.
