John Watson, a crime reporter in Florida, feeling threatened by a potential "stand your ground” trial, moves to Denver with his wife, Diana. They continue to be confronted with episodes of random gun violence in Colorado. Unable to have their own children, they adopt a nine year old boy and a nine year old girl. Their daughter, Trish, likes playing soccer and does very well in school. Their son, Brian, is bullied in school and grows up to become a disturbed young man with an uncommon fondness for guns. This important new book offers a reflection on gun violence in America today and shows the impact it can have on a family. Midwest Book Review says this new novel is "a chilling but inherently fascinating read!"
Frank Drury spent the early years of his career as a struggling screenwriter in Los Angeles before moving to New York, where he found some success in the high risk world of futures trading. His second novel, A DREAM AWAY, is currently available in paperback or as an ebook. His third novel, COLORED FLOODLIGHTS, was released in May of 2012 and received a 4-star review from Readers Favorite who called it a "A recommended read for the thoughtful!" Midwest Book Review says "Colored Floodlights explores the mind of the veteran and the lost generation, a read well worth considering for those seeking contemporary literary fiction." It's the first book I've read from this author and although it took a while to get used to his writing style, I could not stop reading.
The tension kept building, the reader knows something bad is going to happen. When it does, the title becomes very clear. Excellent read. Especially in regard to random shootings everywhere, and how gun control could work. But, if Mitch did not have a gun, if John did not have a gun and if Brian did not have a gun, things could have turned out really differently. Makes one think.
Characters are believable, flaws and all, especially John, with all his paranoia, odd thoughts, logical arguments and open emotions.
The only thing that bothered me a bit is the age of the dog, Charlie. I can't quite believe he is 20 or thereabouts.
I received a copy of this book and try to review every book I read - fiction that is.
I honestly do not know what to think of this book. It had too much going on, cancer, possible domestic abuse, possible adultry. It seemed it never really got into the meat of the book. It was all over the place. The attitudes were just not believable.Just too much going on and not enough depth about the subject matter. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review.
