Kami Mahmud is the author of The 45-Minute Learner Talk Time (LTT) Model, a practical and innovative guide for language educators who want to help students speak more fluently and confidently in the classroom.

With over a decade of teaching experience in China, Kami has worked extensively with Pre-beginners, Beginners, and Business English learners—groups that often face the biggest challenges in language acquisition. His teaching journey began in Economics, Management, and Finance, where he taught ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) courses before transitioning into language education. This unique blend of analytical thinking and practical communication has shaped his dynamic approach to teaching English.

Kami is the developer of the 45-Minute LTT Model—a structured, high-impact teaching system designed to maximize learner talk time and minimize teacher talk time. The model was born out of real classroom experience, frustration with conventional methods, and a deep desire to see students actually speak English, not just pass tests. It emphasizes real-world communication, engaging lesson design, and the use of digital tools like WeChat and WhatsApp to enhance participation and feedback.

Beyond the classroom, Kami is an adventurer at heart. He finds inspiration in the wild landscapes of China’s remote provinces, especially Qinghai and Xinjiang, where the rugged environment reflects the spirit of discovery that fuels his work as an educator.

Whether you’re a new teacher or an experienced one looking to refresh your practice, Kami’s book offers a practical roadmap to make speaking the centerpiece of every lesson.

A method for teachers to improve students' speaking skills.

I borrowed this book through my Kindle Unlimited subscription and read it on both my phone and tablet using the Kindle app.

After many years of studying English as my second language, I delved into this book in search of different and innovative methods to improve my English skills. I soon discovered that this book is not aimed at students, but rather at teachers. Its purpose is to explain a method that the author has developed after many years of observing how his students struggled with speaking, despite mastering grammar, listening, and text analysis.

The method consists of a 60-minute class. The teacher can only speak for 15 minutes to explain the exercise and provide vocabulary. Then, the students have 45 full minutes to practice the exercise, which typically involves scenarios that increase in difficulty as the students' level improves.

I think the author's approach is quite effective, and I wish I had had this kind of English class in the past. I truly believe that the speaking part is the hardest aspect of learning a new language, and this method can properly address that challenge.

Many individuals who learn English as a second language (ESL) frequently have difficulty speaking their new language fluently, even when they have mastered the ability to read and write it. This has long been a major problem in American hospitals where foreign doctors can be difficult to understand on occasion, and where critical information the doctor has given a patient can be poorly understood or misinterpreted to the patient’s detriment.

More than one concerned American doctor has brought this problem to the attention of colleagues in various medical journal articles and social media posts. Requiring foreign physicians to pass English proficiency and fluency exams as part of their medical licensing process has been previously proposed as a solution.

Unfortunately, this problem extends far beyond the walls of hospitals or medical clinics. Many people have experienced difficulty understanding some of the foreign customer service representatives they have phoned to solve problems with products or services they have obtained from the companies that employ the agents.

Kami Mahmud’s “The 45-Minute Learner Talk Time Model: Revolutionizing English-Speaking Practice” is exactly what the doctor and a legion of consumers ordered. In essence, this book allows teachers of English as a second language to significantly increase the amount of learner speaking time in their lessons.

Using the 45-Minute LTT Model, ESL teachers are able to adapt their instruction to the individual needs of every learner, including pre-beginners, beginners, and Business English learners who are most apt to experience difficulty learning and speaking English. Mahmud’s book is a step-by-step guide that instructs teachers how to use the LTT Model.

Kami Mahmud has written a logical, comprehensive, and effective book that contains lesson plans designed to help ESL teachers do a more thorough job of teaching English. As a result, his well-conceived book should allow individuals who have learned English as a second language to speak their new language more fluently, significantly improve their communications skills, and become more valuable members of their individual companies, professions. and communities.

The 45-Minute Learner Talk Time Model is about teaching the English language. Shortly before concluding, the author states the LLT model is designed with an understanding of Chinese education and to align with Chinese corporate culture. Also that it hasn't been tested with learners from diverse backgrounds. I normally expect to see this type of information in the book description and introductory material (which talks about English language teaching styles from more than one nation).

I was curious about the material because I've worked with many people from other countries. I've been impressed and humbled by their English proficiency, while I have only a modest vocabulary of Spanish and French.

A strength is the lesson samples, having students role play to give them a chance to learn/reinforce their language skills in situations that might mimic a real world setting.

However, a significant portion of the narrative is focused on discussing various existing teaching methods (emphasizing drawbacks) and promoting the author's LLT model. This feels more like a long sales pitch than a balanced presentation. Surely if someone is already reading, they're interested in exploring approaches. Boiled down to its essence, the message seems to be 'teachers need to talk less in class and students talk more.' This is a good point that gets diminished in the author's efforts to promote their method over others.

Additional concerns with the book include inconsistent formatting. Frequently sections and block paragraphs have no separation, bleeding together visually, even when text is in bold. There's also some repetition and the sample conversations don't always include clarifying words I commonly hear in English language discussions.

Despite the above concerns, the teaching method agrees with my personal experiences. From primary school to university and beyond, my most effective classes have been the ones where teachers talked less and encouraged more student participation.

As an English teacher working in China, I picked up this book to see if there were any new ideas I could use in class. Even though I’ve studied and trained for this job, it’s always good to keep up with different methods and hear how other teachers deal with the same classroom struggles.

I really appreciate the learner-centered approach. It's kind of how I teach and I haven't seen too many other teachers take this route. Instead of the teacher doing all the talking, the model puts the spotlight on the students, which is something a lot of us are constantly working on.

I also found it useful that the book looks at different levels, including pre-beginners and business learners. Those groups need very different kinds of support, and a lot of resources ignore that. Reading about how other teachers balance these challenges gave me some fresh ideas for my own classes.

Of course, not everything will fit every situation. For lower-level students, you still need to give enough input before throwing them into speaking tasks, and some of the topics might need adapting depending on your students’ interests. It also takes more prep time to plan this kind of lesson properly, but if you can manage it, the payoff is worth it.

Overall, this was a solid and refreshing read. It’s great for teachers who want to keep their methods sharp and give their students more room to speak. I’ll definitely be adapting some of these ideas for my own classes.

A practical, teacher-friendly guide

As someone who studied French in high school and took it as an extracurricular subject at 20, I was interested in whether the ‘45-Minute Learner Talk Time Model’ could apply to learning other languages, and I believe it could. From what I could glean, the common theme was conversational role-playing within groups of up to 20 students in a classroom.

The book includes examples in personal and business situations. I know it works because the conversational dialogue I learned at eleven, I could still regurgitate verbatim with understanding 52 years later.

I also appreciated the author’s mentioning of AI as a tool. We already have translator apps to facilitate communication between people who don’t know a word of each other’s language. Babbel is also an excellent tool that uses pictures alongside words to help visual learners.

As feedback, the print was too small in places. I also noticed extensive acronym use. The author assumed the reader would know what ESL stood for—English as a second language—but never explained what it meant, so I had to look it up on Google. SHO (student handout), LLT (learner talk time), and BRI (business-related issue) were other acronyms used; the author explained them, but perhaps a reduction in their use would have been preferred—just my opinion.

Overall, however, this book could be a valuable tool for teachers teaching English as a second language.

A Thoughtful Pedagogical Intervention

Mahmud’s work directly addresses a critical inefficiency in language education: the disparity between knowledge acquisition and oral fluency. The book is less a collection of activities and more a coherent methodological framework. The 45-Minute LTT Model is compelling for its structural approach, systematically re-engineering lesson design to treat student speech not as an outcome, but as the central medium of instruction.

The book’s strength lies in its recognition of communicative confidence as a function of practice density. By providing a scalable model for maximizing articulative acts within a constrained time period, it operates on a sound principle of skill automatization. The focus on pre-beginners and business learners is particularly astute, as these groups most clearly expose the limitations of traditional, input-heavy methods. This is a pragmatic contribution to the literature on communicative language teaching, offering a replicable system for making the classroom a workshop for the spoken word.

This book was very interesting and informative. The book was about teaching the English language or other languages to business groups and school or college students. The 45- minute Learner Talk Time method was used. The method involves not just structural, word meaning and usage of sentences and words but teaching fluency or oral usage of the language. It gives the students 45 minutes to practice these oral language skills instead of the teacher controlling the entire class period. There were many guides, directions and a lot of advice for the teachers also. This method was started in the business sector, was carried over to schools and colleges It was a great book for understanding the complexity of learning another language. And this method taught not only structural, word meaning and basic rules but also fluency or oral speech processes or training. A great read!

The 45-Minute Learner Talk Time Model is a short but incredibly useful read for anyone teaching English. Kami Mahmud keeps things simple and focused, showing teachers exactly how to make their students speak more and rely less on passive learning.

What makes this book stand out is how realistic it feels. The examples and lesson plans are easy to apply, and the strategies for using WhatsApp and other tools make it modern and adaptable. You can tell the author has spent real time in classrooms, solving real problems.

It’s refreshing to see such a clear, hands-on approach to improving fluency. Whether you teach beginners or business professionals, this guide helps you turn every minute of class into meaningful practice.

A fast, insightful read that delivers real value in under an hour.

Kami Mahmud’s “The 45-Minute Learner Talk Time Model: Revolutionizing English Speaking Practice” is the result of his extensive professional experience and presents a learning model that replaces traditional methods, where the teacher does most of the talking, with an approach that emphasizes active student participation and real-time speaking practice. The book includes lesson plans and strategies adaptable for learners of all levels, and offers practical tips on integrating modern communication technologies into lessons, creating a flexible and contemporary framework. I believe that improving the formatting of some tables and content in the Kindle version could make the reading experience even smoother. Overall, I recommend this detailed work as a valuable guide for English teachers and for individuals learning English independently.

“The 45-Minute Learner Talk Time Model: Revolutionizing English Speaking Practice” by Kami Mahmud is a guide for instructors of students for whom English is a second language. Mahmud provides an overview of the various training methods that have been employed in the past and through to the present. His recommended method is presented with information to cover 3 key components: Student handouts, Lesson Planning, and Teacher’s role in the classroom. Mahmud gives applications for instructing beginners, more advanced learners, or preparing adults for business meetings. He provides tips for encouraging students to be engaged in class and to get them speaking, an aspect of instruction he maintains is often not emphasized enough. I think this curriculum would be of interest to anyone who teaches ESL.

The 45-Minute Learner Talk Time Model highlights an effective, student-centered approach: teachers speak less so learners can practice more. Its real-world lesson samples are a clear strength.

The book leans heavily on promoting its own method and critiquing others, sometimes feeling more like a pitch than a balanced guide. Formatting inconsistencies and the late mention that the model was designed specifically for Chinese educational and corporate culture are also drawbacks.

Still, the step-by-step framework can help ESL teachers boost learner speaking time, addressing a common gap where learners read and write well but struggle with fluency. For instructors seeking practical, speaking-focused lesson plans, this book offers helpful tools despite its flaws.

The 45-Minute Learner Talk Time Model: Revolutionizing English Speaking Practice (Kindle Edition) by Kami Mahmud (Goodreads Author) was an in-depth, comprehensive guide on how to teach English in China. I did learn some new things, such as that the Chinese language doesn’t have past tenses or past participles like English does, and I like how the test lesson examples could help a non-native English speaker understand the nuances of English. The author seems to be an expert in this field. But I feel like the book’s intended audience is for those who are actually teaching English. Overall, it was a good read.

There is a wealth of precise language learning information I am happy to have read in this book. Self assurance and encouragement is a big deal for guidance and real communication. And especially for English, as there are a number of meanings for many words. I like the advance technology for the 45 minute ESA and CLT which as book professes engaged study activates latest advances for flexibility and being student centered. Teachers must be well trained for creativity and adaptability. I too believe the intonation and body language and end of sentence to know when to speak. Also, very important is “the key to success lives in the implementation of the model, not in the lesson or activity itself.”

This book is for English teachers; specifically those who teach English to adults in Asian countries. Its very thorough and organized, and generous with its material. The lessons/schedules/tips/problems and solutions are covered abundantly. There is an emphasis on incorporating modern media/IT based learning; traditional learning methods are being described as well.

The author generously gives permission to use her book in order to teach students/devise training courses; this must be a great value for course organizers.

I felt that the author is highly experienced, wise and kind.

This was a really clear and well organized guide on how to better teach English to students in a way that will maximize talking time. Conversation is key to learning languages but students very often don't get enough practice time in class or are afraid to speak up and make mistakes in front of the class. this book addresses those concerns and provides example lesson plans to show how it can be done effectively.
