About the author

Sayaka Murata (in Japanese, 村田 沙耶香) is one of the most exciting up-and-coming writers in Japan today.
She herself still works part time in a convenience store, which gave her the inspiration to write Convenience Store Woman (Konbini Ningen). She debuted in 2003 with Junyu (Breastfeeding), which won the Gunzo Prize for new writers. In 2009 she won the Noma Prize for New Writers with Gin iro no uta (Silver Song), and in 2013 the Mishima Yukio Prize for Shiro-oro no machi no, sono hone no taion no (Of Bones, of Body Heat, of Whitening City). Convenience Store Woman won the 2016 Akutagawa Award. Murata has two short stories published in English (both translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori): "Lover on the Breeze" (Ruptured Fiction(s) of the Earthquake, Waseda Bungaku, 2011) and "A Clean Marriage" (Granta 127: Japan, 2014).

I wouldn’t say i was let down at all by the second half, but I found it a lot more one note and I felt less compelled to read on or mull over the stuff that was happening on page. I couldn’t stop thinking about this book while I was reading the first half, but I didn’t see that way about this one. That being said, there are still tons of interesting ideas about how society continues to create an emotional workforce who accept much of our burdens (shifting from women to Pyokorun is a fascinating development but it is established quickly and not embellished on too far).

なんだか今の世界を比喩的に表現している感じがした。著者が言いたいこと、多くの女性が抱えていることを、かなり遠回しにグロテスクに表現してある。変な世界なんだけど、変な世界の方が女性にとったらいいのかなとか思ったり。社会がこんなにも変わらないと女性は報われないのかなとかも思ったり。私も女性としていつも思っていることは、女性/子供はいつも弱い立場だということ。犯罪を犯すのは、男性だけではないけどもほぼ男性。性の方向を他に向ければ少しは性犯罪は良くなるのかな。女性や子供が犠牲にならなくてもいいのかな。
私はアメリカに住んでて性加害者に対しては厳しく罰が下される。女性と子供を守るため。日本はまだまだ甘い。容赦なく厳しくするべきだし、病気なんだからホルモン治療とかで性欲をどうにかコントロールするか、薬で脳の働きかたを変えるとか、どうにかして治療する形を取るべき。そうじゃないと一生変わらない。睾丸を切り取るのもありだと思う。(罰も含めて)
著者は本当はこう言うことを訴えたかったのかなとも読み終えて思う。女性や子供が我慢する世界はうんざり。

あとあじちょっと悪め。
性に対する嫌悪感を持つ主人公。ピョコルンになることで思考停止して、解放されたのかも

読み終えて１週間が経った今、やっと感想を書こうという気がした。読み終えた直後はすごい空間に連れてこされて、やっと現実の世界に戻ってきてホッと安心した感じだった。読まないより、読んで良かったけど、人間の汚い醜いところばかり指摘されたようで、読んでる最中は気分が滅入った。あと数年くらい後にもう一度読んでみたい。また新たな視点に気づかれそうな予感がするから。
