Pregnant teen Lorraine Nelson has been exiled from her home by her ultra-conservative religious parents and is wondering how she will be able to have and raise a child on the streets when she seeks refuge in Trinity Lutheran Church, whose pastor connects her with one of the church members, Doctor Michael Parker, and his wife and young son. Thirteen years later, young teen Lori Nelson asks Doctor Parker to be her godfather and allow her to call him "Father." Across town, Grace Carter is being instructed by her mother to not get involved with white boys as they will not understand a black girl. A year later, sixteen-year-old Peter Marshall and his younger sister, Janice, discuss and commit to find a way out of their family's welfare life and work hard for success. Four years later, after a family tragedy, Lori meets Grace, as they are on opposite teams at the high school soccer championships. A couple of years later, Lori meets Peter in a college bookstore and marries him after a year's courtship, while Grace has met and fallen for Frank, a young lawyer, whom she marries while in college for a law degree. And this is just the first third of the book! Yet the reader will not reach the thematic events as hinted in the title of the novel or expressed in the book blurb until the last quarter of the novel. JB Morris has attempted to deliver a positive and life-affirming story over the course of 40 years; however, the timed moments pass by without any true depth or conflict for the reader to grab onto. Character challenges are mainly internalized insecurities that are quickly proven wrong when acted upon in the open, including sadness and initial despair with an unexpected death. While edit errors are only occasional, they do stand out in this rushed, yet crowded tale, like when a section with a dated subtitle of December 22 describes a New Years Eve dinner or when Michael's son, Jack, tries to hide a scar he received on a secret military mission in Afghanistan, seven years before the 9/11 terrorist attacks that brought America into Afghanistan. This story was an unexpected miss.
