This is my second Diamond mystery, and it was a very good read. These books are so different being set in the early 1900's. It is crazy when the story is at a crime scene and Jax, his dog partner Ace, and his wife Laura just pick up items, walk all around the area, keep items for further investigation, and touch everything. Now it would be taped off and nothing touched until the crime scene investigators, photographed and took fingerprints off everything. This book in particular interested me, having been to Niagara Falls several times and like Jax and Laura, honeymooned there. The details really bring the story to life and keep you guessing what is going on and do they know the guilty person. Great characters and wonderfully written. Keeps you guessing right up to the end. Can't wait for the next one, "Hellcat" but sorry that it's the last in the series.

Jax and Laura's honeymoon in Niagara Falls is quite the adventure, starting with the discovery of a skeleton in their honeymoon suite. Then Ace discovers a envelope containing a poem about a dead man and a killer. Jax, Laura, Ace and their friends Lieutenant Tim and his wife Carla are soon working together to solve this riddle especially since all the evidence points to their friend Orin. The clues scattered throughout had me quickly turning the pages leading to a conclusion I didn't see coming. This can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend starting at the beginning. You surely don't want to miss out on all the fun-especially when it comes to Ace! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Wow! The author does an amazing job of grabbing the attention of the reader and dives right into the mystery!
The characters Jax and Laura and their friends are part of a great series. Each can be read as a standalone but having read other books in the series I highly recommend reading them all! They are all thrilling !

The author creates wonderful characters and a well written plot.

My favorite detective duo has become a trio! And what a mystery they have uncovered with Orin and Murph. Really enjoy reading about the Diamonds, their friends and the best K-9 partner there is. This series is always a pleasure. In this book, we catch up with our heroes on one of the most disrupted honeymoons in the history of fiction. A fun read and a great continuation of a delightful series.

I have read all of the Jax Diamond mysteries and they keep getting better and better. I love Jax, Laura and Ace and the way they react to each other. The "minor" characters are delightful as well, Tim, Carla, Orin, even Snake. This novel was the most difficult to figure out, which is good! I highly recommend this series to lovers of historical fiction AND detective stories AND romance. The relationships are very realistic and fun to read about. I can't wait until the next volume in this series! Although I received an advance copy for free, I am leaving my honest opinions in this review voluntarily

Wildcat is a Jax Diamond Mysteries Book 8 by Gail Meath. I enjoy this series and I was very excited to discover that the series did not end with Jax and Laura's wedding. They long with Ace, are going to an exclusive hotel, but finding a dead body was not part of the honeymoon package! Jax being Jax, he can't let the mystery go without looking into the murder. Wildcat is a fantastic next story. I can't wait to see what Jax, Ace and Laura get into next. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

The heroes are back and Jax Diamond Mysteries fans couldn’t be happier. Niagara Falls, the dream destination for a honeymoon in the 1920s, what could go wrong? Everything! Wildcard is a wild ride full of mysteries and twists as time is running out to solve a riddle to catch the killer. A cozy mystery not to be missed. Highly recommend and greatly enjoyed it. Bravo once again Gail for a wonderful series!!

When he gets there he enjoys himself. UNTIL somebody is murdered - and makes it look like he did it!!!!!! He sees the person go into the falls but has no idea who it is - - - and that he is being framed. AND this is the start of an amazing story. Good thing he has friends who believe in him - and are willing to help.

I enjoy the Jax Diamond series largely because they are quite traditional. They are slightly noirish. The detective, Jax, follows clues and gathers evidence. He's not adverse to fighting or even using a gun, but only when forced. He frequently works with his buddy on the police, Tim, and is partnered with his German Shepherd, Ace. In addition the books are historically quite accurate and make good use of real life people and locations. Can't wait for the next installment.

June 10, 2025Wildcard is the 8th book in the Jax Diamond Mystery series. I have not read any of the others, and had no problems enjoying this story and the mystery contained within. I will be going back to read the ones that I have missed as I really enjoyed meeting the characters. Jax and Laura Diamond are newly married and a friend was able to book them the honeymoon suite at the famous Clifton Hotel in Niagara Falls, Canada. They head across the bridge with their dog, Ace when they hit a traffic jam. It appears that there is a fisherman being fished out of the water, and after that, they find a dead body. Finally able to get their hotel, they discover a skeleton in the bed with a mysterious riddle to solve. They report it to the police, but their friend is the main suspect in the death of the man in the river and they get permission to call their friend, Lt. Tim in New York to come and help solve the case. Tim arrives with his wife Carla, and the investigation begins. As more bodies are found, it seems that they might have to postpone their honeymoon. They are given 24 hours to solve the case before Lt. Tim loses his job and their friend, Orin, ends up in prison.
I enjoyed this historical mystery with P.I. Jax Diamond and his friend Lt. Tim using their wits and brains to solve the crimes. Meanwhile Laura and Carla are working on the riddle to figure out what it means and how it ties in with the recent murders. I really liked the female characters. They were out searching for clues and verifying evidence while their husbands were working elsewhere. Jax takes chances, as he is not police, and Tim is not always pleased with his actions. Of course, Ace is also a major part of the team. He finds clues, warns them of danger and leads them to suspects. There are other characters that add much to the story, especially Etta, the wife of the owner of the hotel. Having been to both sides of Niagara Falls many times, I liked the setting and enjoyed reading about places I have been and activities I have partaken in. The Clifton Hotel is no longer there, having burned down in 1932, but I could picture it from the description. The mystery was well plotted, interesting and kept me guessing. I was pleased with how the crimes were solved and who the culprit was. The conclusion tied everything up nicely and left me feeling satisfied with this story. If you enjoy a good historical mystery, then I suggest your pick up one of the books in the Jax Diamond Mystery series.

Review: I am new to this series, but it seems anyone could jump in at any stage and be wholly entertained.
This writing style is quite stilted. The overt explanations on settings, happenstance and daily interactions were tedious. You know, the backstory dialogue of, "Well, remember when we found skeletons behind the wall in our last adventure, you were not so squeamish then.......". That kind of blah, blah, blah is just filler and is never a consistent or relevant approach to writing. It works if minimized and impactful, yet overuse can slow the story line for lack of movement.
The characters are consistent, yet having not read any prior in this series, have no way to gauge character development or progression. I assume these are the same unchanging people from previous novels. Another thing is that the good characters are all so upstanding, moral and righteous. Yawn.
What was good? Dissected in parts, this novel is trash. Taken as a whole, it is compelling in a few ways. The characters do coalesce into a functional and entertaining ensemble. Even the anthropomorphic dog, ACE gets to shine in every scene with his human like mannerisms. The mystery throws obvious red herrings but is complicated enough to fuddle most readers.
I had a good time and that is enough.

I am always amazed at how a story can grab you from the very first sentence. You can’t stop reading, don’t want to sleep, just one more page… this is one of those stories.
Once again Gail Meath succeeded in reaching the top spot on my favourite list. I love the whole series and every single book is equally filled with drama, suspense, history, friendship and love. Wildcard doesn’t disappoint.
Love the history tidbits at the end of the book and the videos giving you a peak at the specific time period.
I would definitely recommend reading this book, but recommend reading them in order. You won’t be disappointed!

Just another excellent book in the series. Kept me wondering who could it be. The ending is amazing, someone I never gave a thought to, and I won't tell because you'll be surprised. Definitely a series you must read.

Absolutely CAPTIVATING!!!! Wildcard is a WONDERFUL addition to the Jax Diamond Series. Not only, do you get to follow Jax and Laura on their honeymoon, but you get to see a glimpse of Orin background. I love the fact that you see more of Orin and how his character is building. Plus, Murph and Carla are there too! Don't forget Ace, he's there as well!
Wildcard pulls different plot lines together, forming a seamless story. I really thought I had the bad guy figured out, but I did not. This is something I truly love about this series, I rarely, if ever, solve the mystery before it is revealed. The twist when the mystery is being solved is absolutely AMAZING! I'm not sure I've ever read a book with a twist like this and OMG is it good!
I read this book while traveling for work, I wasn't able to read it continuously as I would've liked to, but during my breaks from it I couldn't take my mind off it. I kept thinking about who it could be and how on earth was it going to be solved. When I say it's captivating, I mean it is CAPTIVATING!
Overall, the focus of the book is on Jax, Laura, Ace, Murph, Carla, and Orin. There are a few other pivotal characters in the story as well. I will say I missed Jeanie being in the mist of the story, but I cannot wait to see the update on her, hopefully in the next book. The character dynamics are as wonderful as always. Through the previous books, we learn of Jax and Orin's history, but I love the fact that the Jax, Laura, Murph, Carla, and Orin are a tight knit group of friends. This book shows how all the characters interact and work with each other. Along with how the dynamics of each character fit with one another. In this book, you get to see all the characters working together at different times. This adds so much to the story because it doesn't pigeonhole select characters together, all the characters are versatile.
Gail Meath does an exquisite job of intertwining all the characters and storylines in such a way that they flow seamlessly. I have to say, the Jax Diamond series is my favorite Cozy History Mystery series. I've reach multiple series, but none have captivated me as this one has. I'll scream it from the roof tops, I highly recommend this series! I highly suggest you start reading this series today. Each book can be read as a stand alone or in the series order, either way you cannot go wrong.

I read this book while traveling for work, I wasn't able to read it continuously as I would've liked to, but during my breaks from it I couldn't take my mind off it. I kept thinking about who it could be and how on earth was it going to be solved. When I say it's captivating, I mean it is CAPTIVATING!
Overall, the focus of the book is on Jax, Laura, Ace, Murph, Carla, and Orin. There are a few other pivotal characters in the story as well. I will say I missed Jeanie being in the mist of the story, but I cannot wait to see the update on her, hopefully in the next book. The character dynamics are as wonderful as always. Through the previous books, we learn of Jax and Orin's history, but I love the fact that the Jax, Laura, Murph, Carla, and Orin are a tight knit group of friends. This book shows how all the characters interact and work with each other. Along with how the dynamics of each character fit with one another. In this book, you get to see all the characters working together at different times. This adds so much to the story because it doesn't pigeonhole select characters together, all the characters are versatile.
Gail Meath does an exquisite job of intertwining all the characters and storylines in such a way that they flow seamlessly. I have to say, the Jax Diamond series is my favorite Cozy History Mystery series. I've reach multiple series, but none have captivated me as this one has. I'll scream it from the roof tops, I highly recommend this series! I highly suggest you start reading this series today. Each book can be read as a stand alone or in the series order, either way you cannot go wrong.

Now I am going to go mope, as I have finished the currently published books in the series, and feel a bit lost for a while. I definitely see a reread in my near future. This series is like finding your favorite comfort movie, something that you can revisit anytime and know that it will always lift your spirits.

Another great Jax Diamond mystery by Gail Meath! Jax and Laura (along with trusty canine partner Ace) are off to Niagra Falls to celebrate their honeymoon, courtesy of Orin. Unfortunately, upon entering their hotel room they find someone's skeletal remains in their bed. Those remains end up re-opening a 10-year-old unsolved murder and evidence seems to point to Orin as the culprit. Now they have to figure out who the real killer is before Orin ends up in jail.
I was on the edge of my seat while reading trying to figure out who the true killer was. I had some theories/suspicions, but they ended up completely wrong. I'm glad I was wrong though because what Ms. Meath came up with was so much more interesting and exciting!
One of the things I love about this series is that the women are not sidelined during the investigation. They sometimes even play a huge part in helping to solve the mystery. Even if the men aren't exactly happy that they do so but to quote Carla, "Get over it, Tim." The way everyone works together though, especially when it comes to helping out someone they care about, is just amazing. I absolutely love it.
The other thing I love is the little bits of history that Ms. Meath includes. I personally think it makes the story feel more real and helps me to visualize things better, like the Clifton Hotel. It sounded so cool and the picture that was included had me wanting to visit....you can imagine my disappointment when I learned that the hotel had burned down again and was never rebuilt. Despite that I'd still love to visit the area. I've only been to Niagra Falls once but unfortunately, I only spent one night there and I didn't really get to explore much.
Also I was expecting that this would be last Jax Diamond mystery. In her last book Ms. Meath had indicated that it would be the last but that she had another idea and I figured this book was the result of that idea. So when I got to the very end of the book and saw "Hellcat" book 9 in the Jax Diamond series, I may have done a little dance and squealed a bit. There was only a one-line description, but it was enough to get me excited. I can't wait for next April!

"Wildcard" by Gail Meath is the 8th book in her Jax Diamond Mysteries series and takes place in 1923. When we last saw the two main characters, Jax and Laura (Book 7, "The Diamonds"), they had just exchanged their marriage vows and were riding off in Old Nellie with their German Shepherd, Ace, in the back seat. For their honeymoon, their good friend, Orin, had not only provided a lavish wedding reception but had also booked them the Honeymoon suite at the most luxurious hotel on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.
With their car caught up in a traffic jam as they try to cross the border on the Honeymoon Bridge, Gail Meath takes this opportunity to start "Wildcard's" body count as Jax and Laura watch a dead man being pulled out of the water beneath the falls. Jax, Laura, and Ace eventually reach the hotel and get settled in. As a romantic gesture, Jax insists on carrying Laura over the bedroom threshold and nearly drops her as he tries to shield her from what awaits them. The marriage bed has been defiled by a skeleton, a very old skeleton, and it's not long before the bridal suite turns into a crime scene.
As their honeymoon inevitably turns into a busman's holiday, Gail Meath flawlessly introduces supporting characters and quickly defines their personalities without interrupting the action or storyline. This is the 8th book in the Jax Diamond Mysteries series and the second one I’ve read and I’ve enjoyed both immensely! In this episode, it’s October 1923 and Jax and his new bride Laura set off to honeymoon in Niagara Falls, along with their trusty German Shepherd Ace. The room in the historic Clifton Hotel has been paid for by Jax’s friend Orin, who becomes a big part of the story later. On arrival (and it is quite the adventure just getting there!), they find a skeleton on the bed! That’s just the start of this wacky adventure, which adds police officer (and friend) Tim Murphy and his wife Carla and the hotel owner Etta before all is said and done. All of these characters play a big part in the story, including Ace. There is something happening on almost every page, plus there is humor which helps since there are also dead bodies, old and new. The twists and turns kept me guessing and I like the way the wives played an integral role – they didn’t shy away from a skeleton or peril, and as a result came up with helpful clues to solve the mystery in the 24 hours Jax and Tim have been given by the local constabulary. The writing is excellent, the pacing is taut, and you can easily follow the story even if this is the first Jax Diamond book you’ve read. The story is complete, no cliffhangers, and there is no bad language or steamy sex scenes (no sex scenes at all since the mystery consumes most of Jax and Laura’s honeymoon). I love the pictures at the start of each chapter, too. It’s a great series and one I’ll read more of – I have 6 other books to catch up on!
Be sure to read the author’s notes at the end of the book for details about the real Clifton Hotel and other historical facts. The owner Etta was a real person and has a fascinating story herself!

Jax and Laura are back in Wildcard by Gail Meath! Though it’s the 8th book in the Jax Diamond Mystery Series, each book can be read on its own. Set during prohibition and the Roaring Twenties, this series has become one of my favorites because of the great characters and exciting mysteries.
Wildcard takes place one week after The Diamonds (Book 7), and it has Jax, Laura, and Ace, Jax’s German Shepherd, heading to their honeymoon in Niagara Falls. However, seeing two bodies, one alive and one dead, being pulled out of the lake…before they even get to their hotel…sets the tone for what their honeymoon has in store. When they find a skeleton in the honeymoon suite’s bed, they know it won’t be the honeymoon they dreamed of!
Wildcard’s mystery has a lot of twists, turns, and red herrings! It’s not easy to solve these mysteries, but the author does a fabulous job of dropping clues to help the reader finally figure out whodunit. It was entertaining seeing how the characters put the pieces together in order to solve the 10 year old cold case as well as the current murder(s)! I only figured it out right before the big reveal. This mystery was so exciting, and the Niagara Falls setting was the perfect backdrop!
As always, I loved the characters and feel as if I’ve known the main characters for a long time. All of the characters are well-written, and I was very entertained by the characters who were just for this particular book. I thought that they added a lot with their unique personalities. The author could have just thrown them in, but she really brought them to life with her ability to write great characters.
Not only is Wildcard an exciting fictional mystery, but the author also adds real historical facts that add value to the story. I can’t say enough good things about the author’s talent for creating lifelike characters as well as a twisty mystery! I highly recommend it! 5 Stars!

Orin, always a great friend to Jax, Laura, Tim, and Carla, is suddenly in need of a friend himself, and they all drop everything to come to his aid. I loved the mystery, Orin's determination to protect his friends, and, of course, Ace's contributions as well. Cozy mystery lovers will enjoy this book. It can be read as a standalone, but I recommend the whole series.

After previously teasing us that the previous book in this series might be the last we hear about Jax Diamond, how wonderful to have "Wildcard" appear. We delight in Jax and Laura continuing to their honeymoon at Niagara Falls, after their nuptials finally in "The Diamonds" (book 7). All the usual characters are back - Orin, Tim and Carla, and of course the wonderful Ace. And as usual they can't help but get themselves in deep trouble as they land in the middle of yet another mystery - and good old Ace yet again plays an integral part in the sleuthing.
You can't help but smile as you read these delightful books, and while it is part of a series you can definitely enjoy "Wildcard" as a standalone book - but if you haven't read the previous seven books in this series I promise you can't help but be tempted to go back and read all the others!
And yes, another book to continue the series has been promised for next year - I can't wait!.

Jax and Laura and their dog Ace are on their way to Niagara Falls for a honeymoon. Their friend and nightclub Orin has paid for a room for them in the historic Clifton Hotel. On the way to the hotel, there's a traffic jam with plenty of frustration, but they finally arrive. Jax carries Laura over the threshold, only to find that there's a skeleton on the bed! While police are investigating, it's Ace to the rescue as the dog finds a significant clue and leads the way to more. One clue after another, suspicions and clues with plenty of twists and turns, friends and wives helping their men to solve the murder--this book has it all and held my attention page after page. I also enjoyed that, as always, the author included historical tidbits in the book. I definitely recommend "Wildcard" with it's 1920's antics and so much more!

This was an easy read with an interesting storyline, ideal for those who enjoy larger than life characters who tend to be on the brash side. You need to appreciate big personalities with big emotions. Perhaps also a little one-dimensional for me.
Ace (the German Shephard) is definitely the hero!! Perhaps Jax should listen to him more often.
The many references to the previous cases seemed irrelevant at time and perhaps fed the perception of them being a little gunghoNot quite my cup of tea - but I'm sure many will enjoy moving along with this fast paced murder mystery.

So glad that Gail decided to continue this amazing series. There are so many more stories to tell with Laura, Jax, Ace, and all their friends. Each character is totally memorable so matter how much time passes, I am always so pleased to spend time with them again.
Being it’s Jax and Laura’s honeymoon, you know they are in for a new adventure. Crimes from past and present come together and soon everyone will join them on the honeymoon that’s not meant to be.
I was totally hooked, as always, and can’t wait for their next adventure. This is definitely a favorite series of mine.

Phenomenal read! If Ace could drive we wouldn't need any other characters ❣️However, there's a star studded cast of perfectly wonderful folk. Jax and Laura share a honeymoon at breathtaking Niagara Falls with Tim and Carla as they endeavour to solve a decade old murder involving their good friend Orin. Every chapter started with a photo which I enjoyed. It's interesting to read how society functioned during prohibition through the story. Brilliant and 'purfect' ending for the dumpster fire honeymoon‼️Wildcard is a deceptively quick read ~ you just can't put it down!

With the help of Ace their faithful dog, they solve present day and past murders!
I love the setting America and Canada in the 1920s.
