4 stars. The artist watched the painting float face-down in the lake...
What a waste...
Fishing the canvas out of the water, the artist kissed it and told it...
Goodbye...
On the shore, a man and woman had set a camcorder to record themselves splashing around in the lake...
If they hadn't used its painting as a prop, it might have left them alone...
But, it was too late now...
The ancient forest behind the lodge was the artist's home. It wouldn't stop until it dipped its brush in all the world's blood...
It was time to paint a new picture...
This is a small introduction to what was a good horror story about artists and their paintings. Windows into another world.
The first half was very good with many possibilities, but the second half, not so much. I would've loved to see this story explore more about the artist and its reasons for its artwork.
This is a story that reminded me of the book FORSAKEN by Andrew Van Wey, which is also a great story.
Thank you for supporting The Artist! All royalties from copies sold will be awarded to the winner of The Ghosties Horror Fiction Prize (https://theghostiesprize.notion.site/) - an anonymous horror short story competition voted for by the community!
Please let me know what you think of The Artist! And I will see you next time 🖤
Full disclosure, my interest was struggling to stay with this story for the first portion of it. Seemed like very standard horror situation....isolated cabin, bunch of young people getting drunk, high, and overly emotional about one another, and a mysterious person stalking them. Sounded literally like any of the ten thousand similar ideas that have been done to death. However, after a bit of a patch, this carved out some really unique twists. Things just got progressively deeper and more intense, which was great. And the finale was well worth the effort. I'll never think of Robert Frost the same way again. And that's not a bad thing. A good introduction to Inigo Mort for Peter Topside.
When I saw Inigo wrote a horror book I immediately ordered it, no questions asked. I have greatly enjoyed his content on TikTok and he is an advocate for the horror genre in ways that are very admirable. He wrote this book to support funding an award for "The Ghosties" a competition he is holding to provide authors of short horror a platform to display their talent. His passion for the genre is unmatched and I just very much appreciate him.
As a kid that found kinship in books written by R.L. Stine starting with Goosebumps and graduating to more teen focused horror like the Fear Street series I have always had an admiration as an adult for the genre. It is my primary love other than literary fiction and I am always looking for something different. Although this borrows a very common trope of "cabin in the woods" there is a very unique plot here and one that within just over 100 pages surprises it's reader.
In the Artist you meet 4 friends who have built an up and coming digital arts company called Totem. Seeking refuge from the burdens of work in New York City, the team retreats to a cabin in upstate New York. Each member has their own set of baggage they bring to the table and what unfolds is both otherworldly and on a personal level, very relatable. This novella is packed with something for every horror fan from psychological to paranormal with a tinge of Blair Witch. I think Inigo has set a bar for himself and am excited to read more by him in the future.
Side note, he lists out the trigger warnings ahead of your adventure which I thought was a really unique and thoughtful touch.
When I found out that Inigo had self published a book, I knew I needed to get it on my list. Inigo is a shining light within the horror BookTok community, and I knew it would be something to behold.
This story was so incredibly creative with a narrative that seemed very personal to the author: use art only with good intentions. The outcome will without a doubt have many reactions and interpretations, depending who you are and how you look at it, but as artists, we should always have good intentions.
When I saw that Inigo Mort - a shining beacon of the horror community - had released his debut novella The Artist, it was inevitable that I would be picking this up. It's also inevitable that I can't help but be a little biased when reviewing this book, since I've met Inigo and chatted horror with him and had the pleasure of experiencing his genuine passion for all things horror. It's somewhat a relief to discover that this book is actually rather good.
Four friends (and business partners) go to a cabin in the woods for a retreat, only to discover there are secrets abound, and something darker and sinister might be residing amongst them. It's a classic horror set-up, but Mort uses this to peel back the layers of the friendship group whilst also providing commentary on art and commerce. There are some really compelling ideas here which Mort coaxes to the surface.
The Artist provides Mort with an interesting challenge of having to wield language to evoke quite specific imagery, since a lot of the atmosphere here is built from the visual medium of art. Although this is pulled off well, I will say that there are a couple of moments that feel a little unfocused, where the action unfolding feels just a little muddled, but this is a minor gripe. For the most part both the tension and the horror are utilised skilfully. If anything, personally, I wish Mort had leaned a little more into the concept and the horror that could be drawn from it, but that's just me (and I do typically tend to prefer my horror to go just that little bit darker).
This is an impressive debut packed with creativity and imagination. Mort has done a seriously good job here and I'm very excited to see what he cooks up next.
Inigo Mort's debut novella, The Artist, is a gripping exploration of friendship, secrets, and the thin line between creativity and madness. Set against the backdrop of a remote cabin in the wilderness, Mort masterfully weaves a tale that is both haunting and thought-provoking, making readers question the very nature of art and the darkness that often lurks within it.
The story centers around four friends who gather to celebrate the success of their art business, Totem. While the camaraderie and excitement are palpable, it quickly becomes clear that not everyone is there for the same reasons. Drew, one of the central characters, is burdened by hidden truths about love and loyalty, setting the stage for an emotional unraveling that is both relatable and deeply unsettling. Mort skillfully portrays the complexity of friendships and the weight of unspoken words, creating a tension that simmers just beneath the surface.
When the group stumbles upon a sinister painting and begins to uncover the cabin's dark past, the novella takes a thrilling turn. Mort's ability to create a foreboding atmosphere is impressive; the cabin becomes a character in its own right, its shadows hiding secrets that threaten to consume the friends. As paranoia sets in and the lines between reality and illusion blur, readers are thrust into a psychological thriller that keeps them guessing until the very end.
The pacing is expertly handled, with Mort balancing moments of introspection with heart-pounding suspense. The sinister presence of The Artist lurking in the background adds an additional layer of intrigue, raising questions about the nature of creativity and the cost of artistic expression. As the characters grapple with their own demons, Mort poses a chilling question: what happens when art becomes a weapon?
The novella’s climax is both shocking and cathartic, forcing each character to confront their innermost fears and desires. Mort’s writing style is sharp and evocative, painting vivid imagery that lingers long after the final page is turned. The dialogue feels authentic, capturing the nuances of friendship and betrayal, making the reader invest emotionally in the characters' fates.
In The Artist, Inigo Mort has crafted a debut that is as thought-provoking as it is thrilling. The novella is a compelling exploration of the intersections of art, friendship, and the darker aspects of human nature. It leaves readers questioning not only the characters’ choices but also their own, making it a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers and horror alike. Prepare for a journey that is as beautiful as it is terrifying—just be careful not to end up on the canvas.

This book is just wholesome… and yes horror can be cosy too.
The Artist introduces us to a group of childhood friends that go to a cabin in the woods that belonged to an artist that used to have a tv show and all of a sudden just vanished in thin air.
But these friends, that are also business partners, hide secrets from each other and all starts to unveil when weird things start happening. Like a new addition to a painting that was on one of the walls.
With an eerie and dark atmosphere, this book is about friendships, love and betrayals. Let’s not forget a supernatural haunting too.
Short chapters, fast pace, diverse characters and a cool setting… the perfect recipe!
The Artist will take you down the memory lane when horror was simple, entertaining and captivating.
Let me just add that all the royalties from this book are going towards the Ghosties Horror Fiction Prize, an anonymous short horror story competition that everyone can enter.
The Artist is available on Kindle Unlimited, so no excuses. Grab a cuppa and enjoy an old school horror book.
Absolutely loved this concept so much. Was kept on the edge of my seat the entire time. For me some of the death scenes just seemed to happen uprutply and I was left with a little whiplash. For their first ever self published book this is was indeed a solid 4⭐️
I really enjoyed this book. I could really visualise everything that was happening, so much so that I had to close the book halfway through because I was getting way too freaked out before bed.
It really left a pit in my stomach and The Artist was so grotesque in its nature, truly a horror film on the page.
Fusing old-school, cabin-in-the-woods inspired horror with the erratic, visceral creativity of the modern art world, The Artist was a grotesque and inventive beam of light - exploring unrequited love and grief and a fight for survival in the most intricate and illustrious ways. Debut author Inigo Mort examines the dark and greedy feeding ground of capitalism, particularly within the bounds of art as a commodity rather than an expression of internal conflict, throwing in plenty of shocking twists and turns to create a low-risk, atmospheric slasher with a unique and intriguing premise. A fun and fast-paced novella with gut-wrenching - almost poetic in places - prose, perfect for fans of the supernatural. I also think The Artist has the legs to make a fantastic movie adaptation and deserves far more mainstream attention! 4 stars.
I love that this book started out with a very familiar premise of a cabin in the woods type setting, but quickly turned it on its head with a very unique idea that I didn't see coming. I was impressed by how quickly I came to care for the characters as well, especially when the book clocks in at just over 100 pages. I wouldn't say it's a particularly scary book, but it is fairly gory and manages to establish a foreboding atmosphere throughout that had me on edge.
There are some very interesting themes and topics tackled in this novella, such as grief, unrequited love and capitalism. The pacing was taut for the most part, the action tense when it occurred, but the dialogue was fantastic and my favourite aspect of the book. I really got a sense of who the characters were and their relationships to each other through the amazing writing.
If you like your horror fairly fast-paced and with something meaningful to say, I would definitely check this novella out. My only criticism would be that it's too short, which made it feel a little bit rushed in places. I would've liked to marinate in certain scenes longer and to get more insight into the characters' lives. Some of the action confused me in its description too, but other than that, I highly recommend it.
Inigo is one of my inspirations for my very first talking book review videos on TikTok. When he announced that he wrote this book, I was soo happy for him and excited to read it. The story read more like a more mature Are You Afraid of the Dark story meets Unsolved Mysteries.for me. The concept, imagination and creativity the author put into this is there!! With edits.. This book would make a great B-rated movie. Now for the hard part.. I really enjoyed the storyline, I had to listen (to this book more than once because some of it didn’t flow for me and I felt that maybe I missed something. I second guessed myself with what was going on. I got a little lost because things would abruptly start and then move on to something else. During some of it, I wasn’t sure if The Artist was ghost or monster. I wanted to know more about each character. You don’t get to know enough about Gray and you don’t really get to know him through out the story. - All in all I really did enjoy the story. I’m glad I gave it a chance. For a debut book, good job for putting something worth reading out there. I was not disappointed and I’m glad I gave it a second and third read. So I give this a 3.75/5.
4.5 ⭐️ Genre: Classic Horror, Cabin in the Woods, Supernatural, Relationships
“The only function of art, no matter what anybody says, is to stop people from feeling alone.”
This to me, felt like a cosy horror. It felt like I was visiting an old friend and we were reminiscing on the past. It’s well and truly, re awakened my love for indie horror. I ate up every last bit of this book.
The story follows a group of friends and business partners who head to a cabin by a lake in the woods for a getaway. Upon arrival, they discover that the cabin is filled with artwork and has a dark, mysterious history. As the story unfolds, secrets are revealed layer by layer.
This book at its heart was about relationships which were explored so well, but also the commentary on art, capitalism, and the nostalgia I got while reading this was top tier. A brilliant debut!

Inigo is such a positive influence within the indie horror community. I was shocked that this was his debut. He did a fantastic job with this Horror Novel. I felt creeped out throughout reading. Job well done, Inigo.
The Artist follows four friends on their journey to a remote cabin... in the woods. What could go wrong? We all know that this is the perfect location for things to take a dark turn. The friends are celebrating their art business and relaxing together for a lovely vacation. Drew, however, has other thoughts that he needs to express on this trip. Meanwhile, there is a painting about to be uncovered inside this cabin by this group of friends that will unleash something sinister.
Secrets don't make friends...
I recommend those who enjoy horror with a heavy atmospheric background and supernatural elements to give this one a go. You won't be disappointed.
I can't wait to see what Inigo comes up with next!
A debut with a solid foundation and lots of legs. The Artist is one heck of a concept piece. It's evil Bob Ross meets cabin in the woods. And it's a really quick read. The thing that really stood out for me with this work was the driving force behind the story. The concept and imagination of the story really took the prize here. There were a few moments where the pacing slowed me down a bit-- I had to backtrack and reread because things would happen so abruptly, then move on, and I second guessed what I read. And there were moments that I wished, especially in a book about visual artistry, that the story lingered on the atmosphere and imagery a while longer. But these are the persnickety little desires of a particular reader, and shouldn't scare anyone away from this debut work. This book is the heart of the ghosties
It had me hooked from the beginning and you can't go wrong with short chapters and a fast paced storyline!
I felt like I knew all of the characters, like I was physically in the story as an observer watching the events unfold. So much happened in such a short book and I don't feel like anything was missed out or could have been expanded on like I sometimes get when I read novellas. Everything was tied up neatly and had a plot twist I definitely didn't see coming!
There is something very special about this book and I really hope it gets the love and attention it deserves to it encourage the author to write some more as there is huge potential and I would love to see what else they can come up with!
This book was a really good read. I found it as a recommendation, it's a short story sound 200 pages but that doesn't stop it from delivering a good intense and suspenseful story with well developed characters and easy to imagine setting, due to its traditional nature.
This is a horror novel, classic plan and simple, cabin in the woods group of friends and que horror ensuring as they start to be picked off. What really stood out for me is how this was short yet felt like a much longer novel. It somehow had time to tell you about each character, their motivations and desires while weaving a classic slasher style story with a unique little twist.
All in all it was a nice (if you can call slasher style horror nice) easy read that was weirdly a pallete cleanser.
The artist is like movie you throw on Netflix because you can't decide what to watch. The premise sounds OK, so you give it a whirl assuming you'll spend most of the film looking at your phone.
What happens instead is you find yourself drawn in by relatable characters who mean much more than the usual canon fodder. While the story itself is akin to a Creepshow or a Twilight Zone episode, it has much more heart.
There's nods to your favourite horror tropes as well as a poignant theme. What's not to like?
Having just read a couple of longer books back to back, The Artist was a perfect short read to mix things up.
An isolated cabin should be the ideal place for friends, Drew, Charlotte, Ryan and Grey to unwind and celebrate the success of Totem, their art business. But, someone is watching and the Artist needs to produce the next masterpiece.
A debut novella from Inigo and it’s a cracker of a horror. Fast paced with short snappy chapters this is a one sitting captivating story which, at its heart, is about relationships. The remote cabin is a character in itself and the violence is brutal when it comes.
Secrets, lies, obsession, love and hate whirl here in a malevolent maelstrom.
So this story brings a group of friends together for a weekend trip at a cabin deep in the forest, once owned by a famous artist who had a mysterious past. Between harbored desires, secrets, and lies the trip turns deadly, and something or someone may want to reach out further than the woods. I really enjoyed this novella and the messaging behind it was awesome. I highly recommend reading this novella, and look forward to more stories from Inigo.
This is definitely creative and I enjoyed the setting but it could have done with another check, some of it didn't really flow and I found myself unable to lock in with the characters and didn't really care at all what happened to them.
It's definitely got legs, I just would have liked for it to be much more developed. Also a bunch of spelling errors which pulls me out of the story.
The author is trying to put a positive message out there and I appreciate that very much, it feels like they're a good soul :)
The Artist is the fast-paced and gripping debut novella by Inigo Mort. The opening hooked me instantly, and the tension and atmosphere kept me on edge throughout. At times it was genuinely creepy and unsettling in the best way!
I found the plot really unique and interesting, which kept me turning the pages (well, tapping my kindle). Despite the short format, the characters are well crafted, with enough depth to make them feel real and engaging.
Overall, this is a gripping and atmospheric debut that left me eager to read more from Inigo Mort.
This is Inigo’s debut novella and what a debut! This was fast paced and full of twists and turns to keep you on your toes.
Four friends venture out to a cabin in the woods to celebrate the success of their business and things go quickly go awry. It’s fast paced and you can easily read it in one sitting, you won’t want to put it down.
Anyone who follows Inigo on TikTok or Instagram will know how passionate he is about the horror genre and community and you can feel that in his writing.
This story truly makes you think about being grateful for what you have. Being greedy never ends well and the friends in this story learn that lesson the hard way. This was what I want in a horror, it leaves you questioning wtf, throughout and whenever you think you know what's happening... Inigo hits you from outta left field and has you reeling. I absolutely cannot wait to see what comes from Inigo when this is the stellar work they produce from the off!
