This book is the sequel to Extinct. Surviving the end of the world wasn’t enough. Driving away an alien invasion wasn’t enough. Faced with certain death, Robby’s group is on the move once more. They’re headed west, hoping to find other people who have escaped the apocalypse. To live, they’ll have to uncover ancient memories. They’ll have to use every Instinct.
Ike Hamill writes fast-paced horror novels with strong, relatable characters. His books have gained a steady following amongst readers who enjoy his blend of sci-fi, paranormal, occult, and suspense. Whether focused on a small family trying to survive the move to a haunted house, or following a band of angry rebels determined to withstand an apocalypse, his stories draw the reader into the lives of real people in crisis. Readers are always sad to leave the characters behind when the book is finished.
Reviewers compare Ike to Dean Koontz and Stephen King—two of his favorite authors. His narrative often jumps between interwoven stories, presenting readers with a fresh perspective and keeping them guessing until the last chapter. Most of Ike’s readers are repeat customers. Pick up one of his books to learn why.
This second book is just as frustrating as the first. Certainly it's readable and goes along quite quickly due to suspense filled moments, but does anything make sense? No. Ultimately there are characters created for unknown reasons and then never mentioned again. Both books had this happen and its super annoying. I don't like loose endings. Plus the entire premise of this story is complete nonsense.. Its just all over the place and illogical. The best thing about this book is the dog, Cedric. Tim and Cedric are two characters that I enjoyed, and it was their story as well as other little stories that kept me reading. The only redeeming quality about these books are the characters. If it wasn't for the fact of how strong a start the first book in this series had, I would've walked away. It was a strong beginning and in those first couple of chapters my curiosity was peaked. After I realized where the story line was headed I was already taken with the characters. So I am sticking it out for them.
I inhaled this the same night I finished Instinct. Even though this is book 2 of a trilogy, it has a solid ending, which will let me finally shut the lights off and get some sleep. While not as scary creepy as Extinct, there are still plenty of skin crawling moments, not just from things that go bump not only at night, but during the day, sentient tornados, things seen only by peripheral vision, and creepy crawly vines, smart water, modern machinery hating fire, and so much more. The author has constructed an interesting take on the history of our planet and mankind, all while keeping us firmly grounded in the today that went sideways, leaving me turning the page (swiping my Kindle!) to see where the journey led, and what or who and why the men behind the scenes were so bent on ending mankind. I'm looking forward to book 3.
I didn't like it as much as the first one but it was still a fun read. I liked the addition of a few new characters and they were such good characters, too. My biggest problem with it was the action scenes sort of dragged on longer than I liked and it still feels like some of the story threads are just dangling.
And now there is a THIRD book! What I love about these sequel books is that while they are a continuation on an ongoing series they aso have a logical "ending" at the conclusion of each book, rather than a cliffhanger that leaves the reader feeling forced into purchasing the next book. Absolutely absorbing to read.
I truly am enjoying this story. I get caught up with the characters and am truly saddened if something happens to them. And you can't go wrong with a dog in your story. Off to read book 3 and anything else Mr. Hamill has written.
This is Ike Hamill’s second in his Extinct series. It was a great sequel, and picked up pretty much where the first book left off. There are many post apocalyptic books out there and I’ve read quite a few- this, so far has been one of the better ones. It gave a very good picture of what life would be like after the “ending event”. The obstacles they would face such as transportation, food, safety, basically how to get back to some kind of normalcy, all the while waiting for the other shoe to drop. Also, do they even want to try and go back to the way things were or do things differently? Many un-answered questions from Extinct were answered in this book, but it also gave rise to new questions and new characters. To be continued …
Ani druhy diel nesklamal.
This is a very good sequel to Extinct. Many mysteries are cleared up, and there is hope that we will not become extinct along with all other animal life. Of course, we lose some of the major characters from the first book, but we get to meet some new ones. I highly recommend this book along with the first book, Extinct. I am looking forward to reading the novella (Extinct: Black Friday) that explores how Judy and Robby met, and the fourth book, Distinct, in the series.
Thrills, excitement, challenges, dread, fear, threats. This book has it all. We learn the plans of Luke's group. New people are introduced and come together. We learn the origin of the threat to our world. Together our group does their part in combatting that threat.
I finished this months ago, so I don't remember character names! The series is about a Thanksgiving day where quite suddenly, mysterious things begin happening and people begin dying quickly. A group of survivors come together to stop the alien virus that is essentially sucking life from the earth itself. The second book was okay, and a bit hard to follow.
Excellent continuation of "Extinct." This book had even more acton, suspense and frightening moments. Lines between the good guys and the bad guys became more fluid which added to the anticipation of what would happen next. Loved the addition of characters and how they came together. Bring on part 3 and 4 !
I read Extinct and knew that I needed to read this one as well. Instinct was nonstop action since there wasn't the character building that occurred in Extinct. You can probably read this as a stand alone book but will get more out of it if you read Extinct first.
Ike Hamill has done it again! All the questions you had after Extinct have been met with his imaginative prose and wonderful command of the English language. Robby's search continues as he is joined with others who have similar experiences. Together they will face a monster like no other.
Instinct takes over where Extinct left off. Robby and his compatriots stick together in this continued horror of a world gone mad. Packed with action and a few surprises, this is another page turner that will keep you going. With some new characters and some twists you couldn't anticipate, this was a great read.
The second book is as non-stop and exciting as the first book. You actually feel a connection to each character as they are introduced. When the story ended I kept thinking about them and how they were coping , as if they were real. If you like scary non-stop action, this is for you.
The story was very confusing for me at first. So many new people were introduced it was hard to make out what was going on. Once everyone’s roles were established the story began to smooth out and flow like the first book. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
Wow I’m done with my second book in the Extinct series and it’s really good. It was hard to take a break to make dinner or do laundry lol. Mr. Hamill is a great writer with a fertile imagination and I recommend anyone who likes mysteries or science fiction should definitely check out these books.
This is another fantastic book, just as good as the first. Loved the new characters that have been introduced. Really looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
I liked the relationships that continued from the first book. Even when more people were added the writer kept building the core members relationships so the reader felt the bonds.
A good followup to the first book, with more great characters and some good action. I found the end rather wishy washy with its semi-religious "explanation" and felt it didn't do the rest of the story justice.
This was a good continuation of book 1. Good character development and a good story line. I'm anxious to get to book 3. I only read after breakfast but this book got me read more often. A very enjoyable story.
When I say please read these books. If you enjoy sci -fi you love this Author. I don't usually read more then book two of a series but I can't put these books down. Set in comfoie chair because you won't want to stop rrading.
I can’t stop reading! This series is the best I’ve read in awhile and I can’t wait to start the third book. They’re suspenseful and riveting right until the very end.
The continued story of Robbie and Brad from Extinct. Where will they go? How will they survive this unknown world? Continue Reading Instict, the answer, you will find in these pages.
Read Extinct the first book in the series and you'll be hooked! Got them for free with kindle unlimited but going to buy them so I can read them again and again!
I really enjoyed this series. I bought this one this last book on the same night that I finished the first one and started it right away. It was completely different from any book I've read about the apocalypse.
