Branded a traitor, Dick Grayson has become the most powerful hero in the newly resurgent and dominant Mother Russia—and now, he must battle the Beast from the East in one final struggle for supremacy!
Spoiler free: Amazing work. If you wonder what it would have looked like for Dick and Helena to stay partners, it would have been something like this. It also takes a good look at the meaning of killing someone, and if it is the easy way out or the hard way out. Incredible symbolism and character development for a single story. I think a lot of the negative reviews out there are by people that didn't catch the "secret" ending- or is it the beginning? Regardless, what I'm saying is that if you just read this issue through and then set it down, you wouldn't have even read the issue. You won't know how it ends or what any of it means. You have to read the issue again, maybe in reverse.
If you still need help, here are some pieces of the puzzle:
Helena tells Dick that when she says "the roof" it means their evac or escape is on the roof and they need to "drop everything" and meet there.
Cluemaster's code is used at least three times throughout the issue, the most important being at the very beginning.
Finally, don't forget about the acid that eats through ropes.
It’s a fine story I personally don’t feel its done anything to push forward the evolution of Dick Grayson he’s already a badass character also starting the start with a murder is not my view great.
A reversão progressiva da explicação final do inicio. É nessa toada que Tom King aproveita essa One-Shot para experimentar a drasticidade em auge de drama da descoberta da vida de Dick Grayson.
I don't like how the story is told in reverse. To me it would have been a lot less confusing if it was told in chronological order instead of each page starting off by saying "earlier" it just seems really choppy and amateurish imo.
The almost last page (which should have been one of the first pages) reveals a code so I have to go back towards the end of the book to see what the code meant in another scene and it's just a lame fart joke. And dick can't stop laughing about it which just seemed immature. I just couldn't enjoy, or follow this story the way it was presented.
I am on the fence on this issue story wise, as it didn't really do much for me, though there are some flashback scenes and lines in this issue that are brilliant, especially when Batman is talking to Dick Grayson upon donning the Robin suit, and explaining why Robin's suit is not dark - he has to earn the shadows - and Batman's reason behind not killing - as it involves not accepting responsibility, which is the reverse of Helena's reasoning behind why Grayson should have killed a man instead of tying him up.
So...funny story, I bought this on a whim not realizing that this was a tie in and not actually the first issue (ended up buying the actual first issue online a little later). Anyways, with that being said I really liked most of what was going on. Loved the art and dialogue (that holographic cover was shweet!), one of the only drawbacks is that the story is told in reverse. I would've given it 5 stars had the story been in the right order. My only other minor complaint is that it's really short (which might not count as a complaint if you like short reads).
