The Drummer: A Night Shifts Black Novel

Rate this book
Everyone knows about the chair.

The troubled rockstar. The lonely poet. The moment of inexplicable kindness that rewrote destinies.

Even ten years later, Luke and Callie’s story is legendary—a testament to love, loss, and the power of one small act.

I’m not saying it doesn’t deserve the hype.
But when a chair is more famous than you, maybe it’s time to set the record straight.

Because I was there too.
The best friend. The brother. The lover.

What I wasn’t? The star of the story.

Until now.

Hi, I’m Casey Barrett, and this is what really happened the day three damaged souls collided over an ugly diner chair.

THE DRUMMER is a full-length companion novel from Casey Barrett’s POV in Night Shifts Black. While it can be read as a standalone, reading Night Shifts Black first is highly recommended to fully appreciate its depth. Please note, these books explore mental health with compassion and realism.

This is Casey Barrett, the drummer of NSB, story.
In his life Casey felt never seen, overshadowed by his many siblings first and Luke's big aura later. Until he goes to Luke to try and save him from his delf destruction journey, and Callie, who has the extraordinary quality to make people see their true colours and worth, giving them hope, heals him too.

Finally we knew Casey better, and what a great discovery he was. He has a big heart, he doesn't give up on the people he loves, he fights for his band, his sister, and especially for his not sworn brother, Luke. Fortunately he met Callie who complete him, help him to share his weight, and love him how he deserves.

"Casey Barrett, the invincible shield who takes the blows meant for everyone else. But I'm not invincible. I'm scared and alone and just as broken as the ones I'm protecting."

I've just loved to read this story. This found family of three that have such a special bond, at times difficult to understand, filled my heart with joy.

I'm so glad that Aly Stiles wrote this book, with her unmistakable style and her penchant for deep and unfiltered emotions, because we did need it.

The Drummer is the companion novel of Night Shifts Black, it could be read as a standalone, but if you haven't read the first one already, I suggest you to start it as soon as possible because you're missing out on a brilliant story.

**ARC REVIEW**

First I would love to thank Aly for this arc and giving us Casey’s voice.

The Drummer is the companion novel to Aly’s book Night Shifts Black. When I read that back in 2018, it became one of my favs and it was a book that has stuck with me. I was so thrilled to hear she wrote The Drummer. It’s Casey’s POV on things that happened in NSB. You don’t have to read NSB, but I would recommend it to capture Callie’s POV.

Aly wrote such a beautiful & at times heartbreaking story. Seeing Casey’s POV was just what I needed. You think he is this well together person trying to help his best friend Luke, but inside he is dealing with the pain of losing him & why he lost him. And with all that is happening he finds Callie, a beautiful soul who can see the pain he is carrying & a wonderful & strong love starts to happen between them.

My heart broke for Casey & Luke & reading it from Casey’s POV was something I didn’t know I needed. To see Luke’s pain through Casey’s eyes, was so gut wrenching. Then seeing the connection that Callie & Casey have was done effortlessly.

I also suggest when reading to check out the original song she included in this story. When I listened to it, it was perfection and the tears were free flowing.

This is not your typical rock romance. It’s actually more. It’s not about one couple. It’s about pain, hurt, grief, friendship, family, love, hope & healing. Aly gives you a raw, emotional story that deals with hard subjects & doesn’t hold back. It’s real, raw, & at times painful. But in the end you are filled with hope. So please check your TW’s.

"We found him"
The words that broke me immediately.

Sometimes there are words that you read that stick with you.
I remember you.
I love you.
I'd burn the world for you.

But, "We found him"?
Those words are everything.

If you've ever wondered about Casey's story after reading Luke's, then this will give you what you crave.

I read Night Shifts Black years ago and fell in love with Casey, now we finally get to see those days through Casey's eyes. It was like coming home, I was instantly transported back into that world and I loved it. Casey broke my heart so many times with his vulnerability and generosity, and his clear love for his best friend who's struggle is threatening to break them. I loved seeing him lift Callie up and give her the self belief to open up and share her talents.

As always Aly writes an emotional and powerful story.

In this companion novel to Night Shifts Black, we get drummer Casey’s POV on everything that went down. Like NSB, this book is emotionally driving and angsty. I was regularly in awe of how Stiles could walk that line between darkness and hope so perfectly; her choice of words and descriptors made the amazing level of love and commitment between these characters come alive. Truly, I think I fell in love with the always-overlooked but incredibly talented Casey – and the vulnerability and man-tears scenes! Wow. Even though I hadn’t read NSB in quite a while, I remember wanting to know what was going on in Casey’s head. While reading this book, I recognized the repetition of scenes, and found myself speeding through those a bit. But I couldn’t help but wonder how powerful NSB could have been as one book to begin with, in dual POV (Callie’s and Casey’s).

I AM OBSESSED!!!
I just finished this book, so my thoughts may be a little jumbled. My emotions are all over the place, even though I knew how the story was going to end. Aly wrote this beautiful, raw, and heartbreaking story in Casey's POV from Night Shifts Black. If you have read the other books in the series, you will love this one. But I highly recommend you at least read the first book before you dive into this one.

Casey is that character that you love and adore because his heart is so big, and he loves so hard. His loyalty to his best friend / brother is unmatched. But seeing it from his POV is heartbreaking.
Casey is the drummer of NSB, and he has been carrying way more than his own emotions on his shoulders. Even with everything he had going on, he was there for the person that meant to most to him! And as well as being there for his brother / best friend, he found something he never thought for his future, love. Callie is the perfect light to balance out the shadows that Casey has, and Luke hides in.

I loved him more after reading this, and I didn't know that was possible!

This book had me reading a little slower because I didn't want to miss anything and enjoy it as well! I already knew this book would be a favorite, but Casey may have just taken the top of my favorite MMC that Aly has written!

Have the tissues ready when you read this! I wasn't fully prepared for the emotions that I went through!

Make sure to read and TW or CW before you open this book.

5 Star Review The Drummer (the Hold Me NSB Series) by Aly Stiles

It’s been quite a while since I visited Night Shifts Black books but they are books that stay with you.

This is Night Shifts Black drummer Casey and Callie’s story and what a wonderful story it was.

This was an emotional roller coaster of a read and one that gave me all the feels. I was in tears on numerous occasions and felt that my heart was breaking.

From the first chapter I was invested in the story that Ms. Stiles wove. So much so that I was left with one heck of a book hangover.

Night Shifts Black came out some ten years ago. I first read it in 2018, and all of these years later, it's still one of those books that I've never truly forgotten. The story of a tormented, fallen rock star and a chair. That's how I've described it all of these years.

Luke and The Chair weren't the only stars of that story. It became Callie and Casey's story too, and now, we get to relive NSB but from Casey's POV. By the way, in case you don't already know, Casey is The Drummer of Night Shifts Black.

Now, since it's been so long since I read NSB, I'll admit that some of the details were a little faded. Man, did they all come rushing back to me though. Seeing this story told from Casey's perspective gave it a whole new layer, and although I knew how the story would end, it still took me on one seriously emotional roller coaster. It's been a little while since I've cried this much while reading a book, and the fact that I already knew where the story was headed just shows the talent of this author.

I say it with every book that I read by Aly Stiles, but I'll keep on saying it: This woman can WRITE. Her writing is raw and so beautiful, poetic at times, and it draws you in and doesn't let go until you've turned the last page. Even then, I know that I'll be thinking of this story for days, months, years to come.

Aly Stiles is a musician as well as an author, and I encourage you to listen to the original track, Greetings From The Inside, when you're prompted to do so in this book. And if you haven't yet read Night Shifts Black, I encourage you to do that too before diving into The Drummer. While you could read this as a standalone, trust me when I tell you that you don't want to. This story is worth reading from two points of view.

Wow, just wow. I love the vulnerability the characters in this book. The feelings evoked while I read about Casey, Luke and Callie made my heart beat a little faster than usual. Tragedy affects everyone differently and reading how the men worked through everything made them human. Aly Stiles has a brilliant ability to get the reader to immerse themselves in the lives of the characters and feel every type of emotion. I loved this book immensely.

I wish I could give this more than 5 stars. I actually like this version more than Night Shifts Black, and I really love that book. This is told from Casey's POV....I didn't know how much I needed to hear his words. So many times I just wanted to reach through the pages and hug Casey, take away his pain, help heal his soul. Get ready to play Greetings From the Inside on repeat and go through every emotion you have.

Five stars is no where enough for the absolutely incredible roller coaster of emotions experienced while reading Casey’s story. I am so happy his story needed told as it is by far the best in the entire NSB series.

"It’s not funny how far you’ve strayed, just listen this one time
Look in my eyes and see how I love you."

I will preface my review by saying I haven’t read the Night Shifts Black series, so I didn’t know about Luke and Casey. I didn’t know what happened to them.
I also didn’t know about Callie.
But that didn’t stop me from feeling it.

"That’s the real tragedy of tragedy. It doesn’t just change the present, it skews the future and rewrites the past."
Luke and Casey go back a long time. Not only that, they played in the same band, Night Shifts Black—Luke on vocals, Casey on drums. They lived the rock star life, played sold-out stadiums, enjoyed fame—the whole shebang.
Until tragedy struck, and neither of them was ever the same.

"You don’t have to know a lot of facts about someone to know them. Actions are way more honest than words."
It was the kind of tragedy that leaves a deep mark, and when that happens, we all do what we can to overcome it. Casey’s and Luke’s approaches were very different. Both were riddled with guilt. Neither knew how to come back from it.
But Luke’s pain was different. I won’t say deeper, but just know he will never be the same person.
And while Casey doesn’t know how to reach out to him, Callie does.

"That’s what art does. Transforms the scars into something beautiful."
Callie is a stranger. A stranger who cares. A stranger who offers Luke a way out of his dark thoughts by just… being there. And when Casey comes back to the man he considers his brother to try and save him from himself, he meets Callie. And the lives of all three of them shift. In Casey’s case, she brings him the kind of love he never thought he’d feel.

"You’re everything I need to know, let me be yours."
You see, Callie is a poet. And when poetry meets music, it becomes a song. Not only that, but she has a gift to put not only her own feelings but all of theirs into words. To inspire. To make them think about music once again, about creating, about being a part of something.
There’s power in words. In her case, real power. The power that changes lives. The power that heals something that felt like it could never be brought back from the ashes.

"Two shattered souls silently repairing themselves. Two tortured pasts coming together to form a healing bond that only shared pain can forge."
I’m not going to spoil their journey. It’s dark, uncommon, unique, and yes—special. It’s a story about really loving someone and what you’d be able to do for them.
About letting go without ever forgetting. About finding love when you thought you never would again.

About realizing your ghosts will always be there, but you can embrace them and let them watch over you.

"So yeah, I believe in miracles. I’m holding one. Hearing one. Living one."
Some people think they’re so common. Random, ordinary—meaningless, even. But the light they can shed is unlike any other. It can drag you from the deepest pit and bring you back to life.
The characters in this book found theirs. If you’re going through a hard time, I hope you find yours too.

I have to preface this review by saying I have not read the prior books in this series. However, that being said, Aly Stiles does a great job in not allowing the reader to feel lost in any way. In fact, the woman can write heartbreak with the best of them, as this story of redemption and hope knocked me for a loop more than once.

Casey Barrett is hurting as much as his best friend, Luke Craven, is. Yet he manages to rise above the tragedy that will forever link them and his big heart and his drive to make things right again, not only for these two talented rockers, but for the band that is left behind, was beyond awe-inspiring. He's adorable and sexy at the same time. And when he encounters the ray of light that is Callie Roland, it's like he can shed all the sadness for good and bask in all that she brings to both himself and his bestie.

This book goes at a slowish pace but I appreciated that Stiles didn't rush the rebirth of Luke and his return to truly living. The man has suffered terribly and the angel in Callie became his only comfort. As Casey finally finds his holed-up creative partner after a truly horrible night, what starts as mild flirtation with the sweet Callie becomes not only the continued savior for Luke but Casey's own form of redemption as well.

Luke's unconventional 'rehab' becomes the main focus of the book, in my opinion, but the burgeoning romance btw Callie and Casey is truly the catalyst for everyone finding their way back and it was a delight to see. I loved how music became the true love language for not only Callie and Casey but for the entire NSB crew. The steam is very light but you could always sense the undeniable attraction and chemistry our lovers had for each other. With Luke's full blessing, since he'd only look at Callie as his other best friend, it was cute to see Casey claim his girl, taking all the good-natured ribbing his bandmates could throw at him.

Having now read The Drummer, I am very curious about this incredible band and can't wait to go back and start from book 1, Night Shifts Black. It seems these men have intense stories to tell and I'll be there every step of the way.

I'm very glad I finally picked up a book from this wonderful author, as it's well-written and very engaging. With characters that you can't help but love and root for, I happily give The Drummer a huge 4 stars!

For lovers of the Hold Me NSB series The Drummer will blow your mind and take you places you never knew you needed to go to!

While Night Shifts Black focused on the band's front man Luke Craven there was no denying that drummer Casey Barrett left a strong and lasting impression and clearly had a lot to say. Aly Stiles gives life to Casey's voice and heart in The Drummer presenting an emotional and well-deserved spotlight for him. As his story progressed it was evident that there was so much that had been left unsaid in Night Shifts Black and Casey's personal viewpoint filled in holes readers never knew were there.

This story emphasized what happens when friends become family, when friendships blur and become more than superficial bonds but testaments of strength and loyalty exposing our greatest vulnerabilities. The beauty and ugliness of embracing someone in your life and allowing them to see at your best and worst was a strong presence throughout this work. The power of absolution was necessary to the journey of all of this author's characters. The inclusion of writer Callie Roland was a wonderful catalyst for both Luke and Casey to heal. Her gentle love and lack of judgment gave them the room they needed to move on from their past and see light in darkness. This work showed even more so how essential she was to Luke and Casey's finding footing in their broken world.

The depth of sorrow that filled the pages of this story was profound but more so Ms. Stiles ability to still incorporate moments of joy and humor without undermining the serious issues and subject matter she was focusing on demonstrated her sensitivity and insight. The new layers that this author added to the relationship of Casey, Luke and Callie took their story to a new level of honesty, pain and hope. Wonderful and significant dialog moved this work quickly.

Aly Stiles' writing is like no other. This writer pours compassion into every word and nuance that she puts to paper. Memorable and emotional The Drummer was the "pièce de résistance" to a phenomenal series!

*I was given an advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own. *
*While part of a series this book can be read as a stand alone, but for an overall enhanced reading experience reading the previous books in this series is suggested.*

A masterpiece that you never knew you needed until it was there in all its glory.

Have you ever read a book and thought, "This is exactly what was missing from this journey?"

The Drummer is the final book of the Night Shifts Black series that was needed.

Even though most of it was done in the first book Night Shifts Black, it's told from the drummer's point of view.

I loved how it filled in Casey's thoughts, which was like a third dimension to the story, and filled in some of the parts that were needed to make this story whole.

Casy Barrett, drummer for Night Shifts Black lost his sister to suicide and her husband, his best friend, and lead singer for the band, in one night.

As they all were spiraling out of control his world imploded too.

When his best friend just up and disappears after a night that almost cost both of them their lives, he has finally found him, but things are worse than ever for Luke Craven.

Callie, writer and poet has by some kinda fate, stumbled into his life and has become Luke's lifeline tethering him to the world.

As Casy and Callie try desperately to reach and understand Luke they find that they too need each other.

You don't have to read any of the other books in this series, but it definitely will have a much bigger impact if you do.

The friendship that comes from these three broken souls is a masterpiece in itself and the song they write will forever be in my heart.

⚠️ Warning ⚠️

This book deals with depression and thoughts of suicide and addiction.

Casey Barrett. The man who we fell in love with when we were first reading Night Shift black, the man who made us laugh, and swoon over his devotion to Callie, the man who isn’t afraid of showing his love and loyalty friendship with Luke. Finally it’s time for his story.

What Aly gives us is a masterpiece of human emotions, completing the circle of the NSB world and giving us this hidden gem. It was a little missing piece that we didn’t know was needed.

Casey is a silent genius whose heart is so huge. When you first open The Drummer and meet him on the page, you learn that his loyalty is unbreakable and knows no bounds. Then when you are a few chapters in, you learn the about the vulnerability he holds tight and then slowly, you learn he is a quiet romantic. You see just how Casey’s story is intertwined with Luke’s and also get to see how he falls for Callie that burst of sunshine girl. She not only helped in healing Luke, but with the words she writes she heals herself and Casey. Never have I read a book that shows how by just showing up and not letting go, you can help someone.

The Drummer. It’s a journey about not accepting what is and how to demand more. I hope when you finish reading that you know just how strong you can be, that you can do things you thought were impossible and that your one act of kindness can help others

Aly’s stories are so incredibly beautiful. Filled with damaged characters facing challenges in their life. She handles mental health issues with such grace. This book will break your heart a little bit but she’s puts it back together at the end.

Night Shifts Black was from a different point of view..this is the companion novel..same story told from Casey’s perspective.

He is so protective, kind and an amazing friend. He’s willing to put his life on hold to make sure Luke is in a good place. His love story with Callie is really beautiful. He is patient with her…she’s been through her own battles. The three of them become an unbreakable unit.

This story will stay with you…make you think and not judge others around you…we never know what others are facing in their life.

A remarkable story. Highly recommend reading Night Shifts Black first..it helps you understand Casey’s point of view.

I love Casey. I love Callie. I love Luke. And I love their story, I don't really even have the words to express how much. Art is truly a wondrous thing, and the words, feelings and music woven into these pages is just that, art. It is without a doubt one of the most touching stories I have ever read. I will be feeling the ripples for years to come.
This isn't just another book. It is something really special. And you really have to experience it for yourself to feel it.

I am also adding below my thoughts of Night Shifts Black because there would be no The Drummer without Night Shifts Black. Also, reading NSB followed by The Drummer is a unique way to experience both and makes it all the more special.
NSB:
Heartbreakingly perfect. Truly. There is so, so much depth in this story, you just have to read it to understand. I needed the words in these pages so much...so grateful for them.

There isn't enough stars in the sky for these books. Period.

This book breaks and mends my heart by turns. Having read Night Shifts Black years ago, I was excited to get Casey's POV and the insights this would bring. And doesn't it just! Casey has such depth of compassion, hurt, understanding, capacity to love unreservedly from the bottom of his huge heart. The devastating circumstances that inform this book are tough and that impacts the reader through the excellent, empathetic, and informed writing.
Callie's beautiful presence is now viewed through the prism of Casey's eyes and heart. Their love story is woven into the fabric of Luke's halting return to life and the forgiveness that true friendship can provide. The book is excellent. It is heartfelt and honest, throwing a light on the pain and emotional wreckage that loss, grief and guilt can bring, but ultimately, it also describes the healing and hope that caring, loving souls can bring. Wonderful read. I am going to treat myself now, and reread An NSB Wedding 💖💖💖💖💖

The story we didn't know we needed

Casey's POV is what was missing from the NSB series. It filled in all the small crevices of Luke, Callie, and Casey's story. Reading where Casey was coming from while Luke was focusing on falling apart all while dealing with his own tragic thoughts gave us the perspective that so many wouldn't understand.

Reading it, brought me right back to when I 1st read NSB and felt a sense of knowing that someone out there understands my depression. All the ugly little thoughts that take over and wanting it to just stop.

Thank you, Aly, for putting those emotions into words. We all need a Callie in our lives, but most of us have never been blessed with one.

I read the NSB series when it first came out and loved it. Casey always had a special place in my heart. He had so much weight on his shoulders. It was until Luke broke that Casey was finally able to heal as well, thanks to Callie. She was such a force in Casey and Luke’s life. She too had healing to do so seeing herself in them made their connection so much deeper. Reading the story from Casey’s view was just as heart breaking. He too lost someone important and was dealing with the fallout. The story digs deep into tough realities like depression and suicide. The author does an amazing job making readers feel every emotion the characters experience. I love this author and can’t wait to see what’s next on her list!

The Drummer is Casey and Callie’s story and it takes us back to the Night Shift Black World. It’s been a while since I had visited this world but the characters and their stories have stayed with me and I was so happy to jump right back in to this new raw and entertaining read.
Drummer Casey and Callie’s story took over my life as I joined them on their emotional roller coaster, my heart broke for them and there were times I couldn’t hold back the tears. The Drummer is a well written, raw, gritty story about grief, friendships, family, pain, hope and healing but more importantly it’s a love story.

WOW! Just WOW. Aly Stiles's words always leave me breathless, but they seem even more poignant in Casey's stunning story. The way she understands and writes about mental health issues is insightful and honest. The way she shows the absolute humanity at the core of us is a gift. Casey’s love for both Callie and his bandmate is gorgeous. And while this is not an MMF story, it is a beautiful portrait of love in many forms for friends, family, and, yes, lovers. I can’t recommend The Drummer enough. Thank you for the lovely ARC.

Here we have Casey’s point of view from Night Shifts Black, and if possible this is even more awe inspiring than Callie’s version. A whole new perspective to Luke’s story, with some really emotionally dark moments, retelling exactly how Luke and Casey ended up in a hotel room living like virtual strangers, and how one selfless poet brought them back from the brink, quite literally. A gritty drama looking at the less glamorous side of fame and rockdom. Highly emotional and at times heartbreaking, with some truly wonderful moments in and amongst. I loved it.

This story from Casey’s view is perfection! Gosh to have the POV of Casey retelling the story of Night Shifts Black was something that just made this series so much MORE! I’m not sure how you explain needing a book so badly and not knowing it. The Drummer is the star of the show (series) and will have you loving Casey more than you already do. Aly continues to write stories that make you feel all the feelings while cleansing your soul.

Review to be updated soon but even as much as I always love Aly's books, this one will probably always be one of the most emotional reads of my entire life.
I have loved Casey from the first time he appeared in NSB and I love him even more after Aly gave us the book we didn't know we needed.

This one meant so much to me that the quotes that touched me the most were hand written into a journal....pages and pages and pages...🥰💔❤️

Revisiting Suite 403 was everything I needed, and this book didn’t disappoint! Night Shifts Black was such an incredibly poignant and impactful story, and it was nice to get a deeper understanding of the dynamic between Luke, Callie, and Casey in these pages.

NSB was more of Luke & Callie’s story, while The Drummer was Luke & Casey’s. The book duo made such a well-rounded, deep story. Aly Stiles’ words have always rung true with me and nestled deep within my heart, and this story was no exception. My heart was cracked, healed, and put through an emotional wringer, and I loved it.

What an amazing story

From beginning to end I could not put this book down!! Casey's POV had so much more insight into what happened between him and Luke. And when Casey and Callie meet fireworks go off. Luke and Casey needed Callie and she needed them just as much. I truly recommend reading the NSB series. You won't be disappointed with these amazing books.
