Valentine King was born in North Yorkshire in 1980. He began writing horror stories at the age of eight and hasn't stopped since. He attended the University of Hull, graduating in 2003 before achieving a post graduate teaching qualification in 2005, teaching adults to read and write for two years whilst continuing to write in his spare time. Valentine's first published collection of twelve short stories was 'Night Terrors,' in 2014, followed soon after by the acclaimed 'After Dark,' a second collection of short stories. In addition to his fiction work Valentine has also written a guide to children's literature and a guide to self publishing, both available on Amazon. He lives on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors with a dog and cat and is currently working on his first novel.
I was excited to find this selection of 7 short horror stories from the author Valentine King as a freebie on Amazon. I really love horror and like to be scared, chilled, disturbed and challenged with my horror books I read. I have read some very good stuff and some really bad stuff. This sits middle of the road for me.
Firstly, the stories are all very well written and very easy to read, each story has a different theme from a doll that comes to life with an evil glint in her eye to a worrying bramble plant that seems to have a mind of it's own. So lots of variety here, a few of the stories are taken from a couple of Valentine King's other short story horror collections you can get.
Here is my issue though, they are not very scary, which is kind of the point of horror writing in the first place.
Nope, not even a little bit, some of them seemed more like a crime story (Six Seconds), others were just not even slightly creepy or scary (Punch & Judy story) and the rest were just not hitting the mark for horror stories. The whole point of horror is to be horrified, shocked, feeling creeped out. Maybe some readers might find these stories horrifying but I don't think true fans of horror will. I was disappointed I did not get a thrill.
I think of books I have read this year and short stories from other horror writers that got five star reviews and were genuinely terrifying and scary. I would like to read more from this author but I would like to request he crank up the horror element a lot more to grab me as a lifelong fan. 2.5 stars really, but upped it as the writing is good.
I love scary stories and these hit the spot. The novena No going Back was quite satisfying I never heard of him until I ran across his book in Amazon.com so happy I did .
This book has some good what I call scary stories but I really expected more from Night Terrors. I am a horror junkie and it takes a lot to creep me out as far as not wanting to turn the page or read before bed. I do recommend this one for readers who like to be entertained but not so terrifying as I hoped it would be. kozettekaysmith
If like me and you've read, played and seen plenty of horror stories, there is nothing new here. It's all quite predictable and there are no surprises.
The writing flows well and the stories are easy to digest and partly entertaining.
Still, there's nothing new for an experienced horror fan.
It has been a long time since I have read a book of horror stories as good as these. The exception is of course Stephen King. Read this book now if you are truly a horror fan. Read it & enjoy!
I really liked all the stories and felt all of them were well written. They kept you sucked in all the way through the story up to the end. "No Going Back" was excellent!
