Bring on the fiery unicorns 🔥🦄, magical singing ✨👩🏻🎤, and broody Licornyn warriors ⚔🐎.
(I still stand by my choice of Faraine as a superior protagonist. Actually, out of all of the gods-blessed sisters, Ilsevel seems to be my least favorite thus far despite her having a gift I relate to. I already know what's coming up given the peek into this story from the Shadow King series, but it will be interesting to see how this perspective gets there, handles it, and how it will be resolved in the final book.)
UPDATE 1/27: I got an ARC!!! (But I was on a cruise, so I couldn't start it right away, and then I left Cozumel and returned to the Ice Planet Hoth - i.e. 14 inches of snow and the plague circulating through my family. As I'm currently struggling to not hack up lung, I'll get to this when I can actually focus.)
UPDATE 2/1: Currently at 36% in an ARC of the 3rd installment. ... (oh no, I saw another review that said something about a cliffhanger. If it's anything other than what I already know, imma be disappointed.

Book 3 in the WarBride series definitely sees some development of character, particularly in Ilsevel ... which is great because as entertained as I am by flaming unicorns, Ilsevel has thus far not been my favorite heroine. I've struggled with her selfishness and utter lack of forethought into how her impulsive actions might affect ... well, anyone really. While this book starts out with Ilsevel exhibiting some of that same brashness, we see it altered through the course of the book. (Though I will admit, there were definitely some head-banging against the wall moments in some of choices made by both Ilsevel and Taar.
One thing I genuinely loved outright with no qualifiers was Ilsevel's weighing the decisions of war. Recognizing the wrong done by her father and humans and wrong done to the licrornyn/Ilibrians and their right to fight against that while still recognizing a fundamental wrong to their alliance with the Noxaurians and the methods used by them against the humans, Trying to find the answers in that dichotomy ... it's an interesting dilemma. I'm curious to see how the alliances made by each of the sisters is going to work for the good of this world, as I'm fully expecting Aurae and potentially Lyria series to follow.
Also interesting to see how each of the people within this story have tended to dehumanize the other. Taar makes no bones about the fact that he finds the trolde people and particularly the king to be "without conscience". The licornyn people have a deep bias against humans based on Larongar's deceit and what it cost their kingdom/world. But we also saw in the Shadow King series how the trolde felt that humans were degenerates and vice versa. We've seen the Naxaurians and Fae painted in an unflattering light in both series thus far. I am betting that Aurae's story is going to include a connection to that world giving us new insight into those people. In my experience, people are more alike than they are different. It's interesting to see these biases playing out in a fantastical world ... even as they disappointingly continue to do so in reality.
I hate cliffhangers ... not cliffhangers as in the author drops a bomb of information that potentially alters the trajectory of the story - like the revelation that Darth Vader is Luke's father. No, I hate the kind that leaves characters in mortal peril, full stop.
Author: Let's endanger this beloved character so the readers have to buy the next book.
Me: I will not bow to your cheap tricks.
I hate cliffhangers like this not just in a way that is "*eyeroll* That's so annoying." No, I hate them in the way that makes me yeet the book across the room, while I foam and snarl at the mouth and then refuse to read the follow-up books. Incidentally, this is also similar the way I feel when I read books written without proper punctuation.
That being said, the "cliffhanger" in CurseBound is not really much of a cliffhanger if you've actually read the author's previously completed Shadow King series. (and if you haven't done that yet, what the pile of flaming unicorn poo are you doing reading this first???? Go do the homework.) All of that to say that, while yes there was a bit a cliffhanger there, it was entirely expected based on previous reading so if you've done the proper back reading it's something of a nothingburger. So yes, I will be carrying on with the final book in this series, SoulFire, when it releases in March rather than chucking it in the bin. (which is especially good as I read an e-version on my kindle) Thank you, Slyvia, for such a close release date.

Let me say WOW!!! What a cliff hanger. I love this series so much. I love everything Slyvia writes. Oh but this book is the best so far in this series. Had my emotions going everywhere. I could not put this book down once I started reading. Taar and IIsevel are my favorite characters and I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.

This series is intrinsically tied to The Bride of the Shadow King series. If you’ve read it, you’ll already be clued into many of the nuances of this installment. Watching these narrative threads converge is truly masterful. There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing such a carefully woven world expand and overlap so seamlessly.
I am a major fan of Sylvia Mercedes, and for many reasons. First and foremost, she writes epic romances that feel like a beautifully orchestrated game of Dungeons & Dragons. Her stories are sweeping fantasies with richly detailed worlds, layered lore, and echoes of classic bodice-ripper romances. She is known for her slow-burn love stories, and while the WarBride series is one of her more spice-forward works, there are still important caveats to the pacing and progression of that intimacy. This is one of my favorite Sylvia Mercedes series, but it all began with The Bride of the Shadow King, which plays an important role here through character and world overlaps.
For the most thorough reading experience, I recommend starting with The Bride of the Shadow King series. That said, it isn’t strictly necessary; you may simply miss a few easter eggs and familiar faces along the way.
CurseBound is the third installment in the WarBride quartet, and Sylvia masterfully integrates essential information through subtle, organic recaps at the beginning of the book. It never feels repetitive for readers binge-reading the series, yet for those who read each book as it is released, the characters and world come rushing back effortlessly. Her ability to re-anchor the reader without disrupting the narrative flow is an impressive feat.
This installment hit me especially hard on an emotional level. I cried, not once, not twice, but three times. Even after finishing the book, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. The next day, the emotional moments lingered with me, unforgettable and deeply affecting. I even found myself racking my brain, trying to recall how the final moments connect back to events in The Bride of the Shadow King series.
For me, Sylvia Mercedes is the queen of slow-burning, sweeping fantasy romance, and stories that read like high fantasy while delivering high stakes, emotional depth, lovable characters, and romances that burn hot enough to carry you through an entire series. From her impeccable timing to her intricate plotlines and deeply satisfying arcs, I will forever adore Sylvia as one of my all-time favorite authors.

Ok first off let me just start by saying a massive thank you for my ARC of this book. This is an honest review and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity as I have been DYING to get my hands on this book since finishing the second and now I’m even more desperate to get the last book (no spoilers but Sylvia girl are you trying to kill me with the ending and the suspense?!).
I loved this book from start to finish but my goodness did it make me sad – so much of this story was heartbreaking. Poor Ilsevel and Taar need to catch a break at some point! But I won’t say any more to avoid spoilers!
The world building, characters and plot were all just as beautiful as the previous two books and the depth this book took me to was perfection, Sylvia always manages to make me feel like I am reading a fairytale written for adults! The angst and slow burn I felt for both main characters was enough to drive me crazy though (how long does it take to get a new moon for Silmael?!) and I felt every emotion alongside them. Also aside from the main characters, can I get a shout out for the biggest walking green flag and sweetest character Halamar (I just wanted to give him a big hug and tell him everything would work out). Readers of Sylvia will also love the overlap in this book with her other connected series Bride of the Shadow King and the events in this book explain the final crossover we’d read about when Vor discovers Ilsevel is still alive (it helped clear up so many of my questions from before).
To say I am desperate for book 4 would be an understatement and I cannot wait for next month! Would recommend everyone who hasn’t read this series to dive right in and for those who have already read books 1 and 2, you’re in a for a TREAT!

I have A LOT to say about this one. Which is funny because I think my review for the last book was one line alone the lines of “loved it!”
This one didn’t start well… we spend a lot of time in bed or bed adjacent, with somewhat cringy dialogue and then reading increasingly wordy and repetitive thoughts. I was bored.
Things start to pick up before page 60, thank goodness. But Taar was not the leader and man I want him to be. He’s a bit of a pushover and I find this a very different version of Taar from book one especially. I don’t like the man he is in this book (especially the first half), letting everyone control him and Ilsevel. It also seems like the author is trying to stretch things out… like a lot of this feels manufactured. It doesn’t so much flow as feel like the author is flinging one ridiculous demand after another at the couple. It’s reminding me of Outlander. By book 5, everything felt so manufactured to keep the story line going that I completely lost interest and stopped the series. This has the same vibes... How much can one couple be put through and still be believable? They’ve only known each other two weeks and I already feel like we’re reaching that point.
But…
Bam! At about 50% everything turned for me. I suddenly was thoroughly invested and didn’t want to stop reading. My mouth hung open in shock multiple times. I felt all the emotions - sadness, anger, frustration. Wow.
I rate the first half of the book 3 stars and the second half 5 stars. Overall, it’s a 4. I am eager for the next installment!

Sylvia delivers again with Book 3 of the WarBride series. This installment is richly written, with lyrical and romantic prose that feels smooth, controlled and emotionally resonant. The story carries a sustained intensity, shaped by yearning, love, grief, and hardship, and it maintains a strong emotional throughline from beginning to end.I certainly cried more than once!
The novel finally explores what it means for Taar and Iisevel to submit to the bond that connects them. Unfortunately, their bond is not presented as a simple resolution. Iisevel is repeatedly required to prove herself, defend her place, and demonstrate her strength and capability alongside Taar. That ongoing struggle, paired with the tension between personal devotion and cultural obligation, gives the relationship real weight and keeps the stakes consistently high. As external threats escalate, from familial and enemy forces to the growing shadow of dark magic, the narrative pressure continues to build in a compelling way.
By the end, I was fully invested, and the cliffhanger was genuinely surprising- it has left me with a gnawing pit in my gut! Waiting until March for the next book will be difficult.
Overall, this was a powerful, intense and immersive read. Sylvia’s ability to combine romance with conflict, tradition, unique magical abilities and rising danger results in a story that feels purposeful and deeply affecting. If you value romantic fantasy that balances emotional depth with high stakes and a unique magical system and world, this book is strongly worth reading.

The tears I shed while reading this installment of Taar and Ilsevel's story has totally broken me. I have shouted, kicked my feet, and thrown a tantrum or two and now, I'm hungover. The action and adventure were incredible and the attention to detail awesome. The draw the two characters share is unimaginable and yet something every lover dreams of.
I knew what was coming having read Bride of the Shadow King trilogy and yet, it still shocked me to my core. I loved the Licornyn culture and even despised their laws and ways! But it all worked to make one hell of a read. If you haven't read the Warbride series, what are you waiting for? This author knows how to tell a story.
Ilsevel's journey from pampered princess to warbride has been heartbreaking. Filled with love, loss, strength beyond anything I've ever seen, and dedication is something I'll think about long after reading this series.
And Taar, oh Taar. When he finally realizes that he's been fighting a losing battle and finally gives in? It's beyond beautiful. I love his dedication to Ilsevel and the way he protects her, even from his own people at times.
I cant wait for the next installment of Warbride, coming in March 2026. Catch up on the entire series now!

"She is a wonder, a fighter, a spirit of flame and song akin to the licorneir herself." I love the way Taar thinks about Ilsevel. She is viewed as this dainty weak thing by his people but he sees her strength.
Which is also coincidentally why I love Halamar because he also sees Ilsevel's strength and is her friend in a sea of people who hate her.
There was so much in this book little peeks into Ilsevel's childhood and now I wonder if some people aren't really as gone as we believe?
My heart was broken in this one, but I have hope that maybe we will get a bandage or two in the fourth book?
I have been in LOVE with this world since I read Bride of the Shadow King and getting to finally see where that story collides with this one was phenomenal. I am so excited for the finale to Taar and Ilsevel's story. I am also really happy that Sylvia has decided to release the third and fourth books close together because that cliffhanger was a doozy. This book immediately takes you in the the world of Sylvia Mercedes' lush language, gripping adventure and unexpected turns. Strong evidence of Sylvia's amazing ability and imagination is found in chapter seven-I was absolutely overcome with this chapter! Taar and Ilsevel continue with their relationship's development, with both connecting more closely in spite of his people's opposition. The story continues in a linear fashion describing their trek to save their people and defeat the magic that is oppressing. Then Taar is betrayed in the worse way by one who he considered a friend and does not detect his deceit, which flips Taar and Ilsevel's relationship, and destroys trust. Ilsevel is faced with heartbreaking loss. The concluding chapters move the storyline into much confusion and misunderstanding. No more info from me as I am close to spoiler territory and you need to experience this as I have! Next book, coming soon, but not soon enough!

The third chapter of Taar and Ilsevel's story left my heart torn (pun intended). I devoured this book, eager to see how the bond between Diira and Ilsevel deepened, as well as her velra with Taar. That cliffhanger though, I do not know how I will wait until March 12th for SoulFire. The assault for Evisar and the unfurling events were some of the best writing I've ever read in all of my years of being a reader. My chest ached with each word.
Oh, how I loved and enjoyed this book. I love the characters, the lore, the worldbuilding - all of it. With each continuation, Sylvia weaves more depth and magic into her Licorna and Eledria!
Ilsevel is one of the best written MMCs in the romantasy world, and Sylcatha stole my heart too! I love the Dual POV and how it displays Taar's angst, love, and feelings toward his bride. Again, I will say, this book cleaved my heart in two. I am shattered, but in the best of ways.

That ending was so cruel. Thank goodness the next book comes soon because I'm not doing okay with how things were left.

Absolutely loved this book!!! It’s much different I think than the last book in this series. Ilsevel goes through a lot to prove herself to Taar’s people. Taar struggles with uniting his people and preparing for battle. They face so many obstacles and their love is truly tested in this book. I can’t wait to see how their love overcomes all the challenges in the next and final book! I’ve really enjoyed Taar and Ilsevel together and I’m so ready to see them get their happily ever after because they deserve it! I really love the Shadow King’s cameo in this book too; it gives alternate perspectives on what happened at the end of the Shadow King’s series too! This was my favorite book in the series so far!! So excited for the next one!

In this book we see Ilsevel having some character growth, and the way shw sees thing now. The changing and evolving relationship with Taar was greatly executed.
At the ending I was at the edge of my seat, because I already knew was it was coming based on the shadow king series.
I can not be more grateful to sylvia for the quickly realase of the forth and final book, cause I need the conclusion of this story ASAP.
If you haven't realised this far I really loved the book and can't wait for the final book of the series.

Hauntingly Beautiful
I thought the first volume of this story, Warbride, could not be surpassed, but this book is just as beautiful. The writing is incredibly skilled, the story is so full of love and pain and desperation. I normally struggle with a third book in a series, where the plot inevitably brings about war and suffering, but I absolutely adored every part of this doomed haunting story of forbidden love and sacrifice. I knew the cliffhanger was coming, having read the companion Shadow King trilogy, so I am very happy the final book comes out next month. Another absolute masterpiece, well done Sylvia Mercedes.

This book is so good and so heartbreaking. I'm not sure what else I can say without giving any significant spoilers. The world, characters, and plot are all excellent. I couldn't put this book down from start to finish.
After the cliffhanger ending, I'm glad I only have about a month to wait for the conclusion. If you've read the connected Bride of the Shadow King series, the events of this book explain the final crossover in book 3 where Vor discovers Ilsevel is alive. I know I had a lot of questions at that point in the series.

Amazing installment in this series. I found the character arcs of both Taar and Ilsevel to be deep and complex, with this book bringing them to a new level. On the eve of a major battle you can see how things are lining up, but Sylvia manages to keep her readers on their toes with twists and turns you won’t see coming. And I absolutely love how she weaves this story around the previous trilogy, Bride of the Shadow King. I’m seeing the puzzle pieces and simply salivating for book 4!

This book is hard to review. Book 1 hooked us, book 2 fed our addiction. Curse bound book 3 well it was a ride. Sylvia is the queen of cliffhangers and she didn't disappoint. Our Mc's continue the battle against evil. It also asks what is evil. Is it racial prejudice, traditions, religion, greed or a combination. This journey started 2 years ago and I am still hanging in their. March can't come fast enough.

This series has been pretty consistent so far, but this is the first time an ending has actually left me eager to jump into the next book. It was still fast-paced, though it slowed down a bit more compared to the previous installments. At times it did feel slightly rushed, but overall I had a lot of fun with it.

They weren’t supposed to be together… everything was stacked against them, but no two other people deserved to be together more than Ilsevel and Taar. Their hearts are fragile and been through more than anyone should have to bear. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next installment. Our author has left them both in an entirely vulnerable position.

Once I have a Sylvia Mercedes book, all else is forgotten until I finish the book. I love how she weaves together her stories. The Warbride series is no different, weaving in so well with the Bride of the Shadow King series. Ilsevel is by far one of my favorites and I love the story she has been given. Waiting one more month for the conclusion is going to be difficult!

I am just smitten with Taar and Ilsevel's story and am anxiously awaiting the last book in this series. Sylvia always writes such rich worlds and characters. Everyone and everything feels very real. If you love fantasy romance with epic battles and high stakes, you'll love this series!

Started a little slow for me, but the buildup to the ending was great. I was absolutely riveted by the last few chapters and was left bereft at the end without the ability to keep reading this story! So happy Sylvia is releasing the final book sooner rather than later!

I knew how this was going to end because it finally lined up with Heart of the Shadow King but it still hurt so bad😭 Honestly thank goodness the next book releases in March because I need to know what happens next and for Ilsevel & Taar to get their HEA!

The love story between Ilsevel and Taar continues in this book, she is a human princess, whilst he is the king of the licornyn, a nobel warrior and courageous protector. Their love is strong and their velra bond proves this, however once they get to Taar's city and his people, this love is not accepted. The council of elders decrees they are to remain chaste and apart for a whole month in the hope that Taar will come to his senses. Their velra bond is tested to it's limits during this time of abstinance. The Licornyn are a proud people, they look down on humans, and the fact that Ilsevel had bonded with one of their beloved Licorneir, one who had been heartorn, was seen as a sin for which she should die. But her Diira had chosen her and she was her beloved. They believed that she had enscorsled both Taar and Diira. Since the rift their city has suffered from a blight which stole many of their people's lives whenever it hit, the vardimnar, and Taar wanted to take back their old castle town from the Miphates who were the ones who'd caused the rift. A battle is to take place to break the magical barriers enclosing this city, but a bigger battle was going to take place between Ilsevel and Taar. Can their love withstand so much antagonism, being kept apart, with Ilsevel totally on her own surrounded by people who not only hated her, but wanted to see her dead? This book is another page turner, kept me up through the night unable to stop reading, and when the ending stopped at such a cliffhanger I could have screamed. It is a heartbreaking book on many fronts and I cannot wait for book 4 which should bring us to the end of this enemies to lovers romance.
