A counting adventure you WON’T want to miss, from bestselling and award-winning author Mo Willems.
The Pigeon won’t count to ten, and here’s why:
Reasonably reasonable reason #1: He doesn’t want to!
Practically perfect reason #2: He already did a bunch of counting yesterday!
And perfectly obvious reason #3: He has THINGS to do! Also, counting is for the birds!
Do YOU think The Pigeon will count to ten? (Don’t count on it!)
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Mo Willems comes this funny and engaging numbers and counting early-learning concept board book with touch and trace numbers and art throughout. The Pigeon Won’t Count to 10! is the first in a collection of original Pigeon board books and is a perfect addition for babies and toddlers to The Pigeon series.
The New York Times Book Review called Mo “the biggest new talent to emerge thus far in the 00's."
Mo’s work books have been translated into a myriad of languages, spawned animated shorts and theatrical musical productions, and his illustrations, wire sculpture, and carved ceramics have been exhibited in galleries and museums across the nation.
Mo began his career as a writer and animator for television, garnering 6 Emmy awards for his writing on Sesame Street, creating Nickelodeon's The Off-Beats, Cartoon Network’s Sheep in the Big City and head-writing Codename: Kids Next Door.
The Pigeon is back in a board book for young readers about (Not) counting to ten! No! He absolutely will not count to ten. Just let him list the reasons, one by one! Little readers will love the Pigeon and his antics as he delightfully refuses to count…or does he? Will the Pigeon count to ten? Find out!
A very fun and short boardbook! Mo Willems returns with a new Pigeon story where Pigeon is determined not to count to 10. This is great for children who enjoyed Willems' previous titles, particularly younger ones that are learning early concepts. With expressive art, large drawings, and simplistic backgrounds, this makes for a good readaloud or baby/toddler storytime pick. Pair this with a pigeon puppet to make it an even more interactive read and have kids practice their numbers by encouraging them to count along. This is also part of a four book concept series, so I'm looking forward to checking out the future books and how they can support ECRR literacy skills.
09/30/25 Pigeon is not going to count to ten. He needs ME time, he did a lot of counting yesterday, etc. He's got some pretty solid reasons why he's not counting to ten and oops, does he accidentally give the reader ten reasons why? In typical Mo Willems fashion, he makes something really humorous with just a few words. I loved it!
The board book is tactile! Kids can trace the numbers, and the pigeon, with their fingers! And of course it's ridiculously funny for anyone who remembers how to giggle. And, yes, the meta aspect works perfectly. Be sure to check it out from your library!
New Mo Willems Pigeon book is coming out September 2, 2025. I was able to read an advance copy thanks to Edelweiss. Fans of the Pigeon books will love it!
