That was so cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute.
Folks, everyone really needs to read this.
I don't say this often, but this book is worth the money. I would totally buy it again.

About this book, it's a wild mix of different people and beings and sexual orientations. It's very colorful, so really the characters are quite vivid in color and I love the art behind it.
The story itself is very amusing. There's not much plot, but it doesn't need to be, it's really good entertainment even without it.
Sébastien and Elia are so adorable together. There's only one kissing scene, unfortunately, but the storytelling is really well done and you can feel the sizzle so well. Even if Sébastien is a bit awkward and doesn't really realize it and Elia thinks he has to sleep with other people to distract himself, because it can't be that he likes Sébastien.
To be clear, they are not a couple in this first part. It's more of an introduction to more. It's also primarily about the fact that friends are usually better families than actual families.

Les Normaux: A Graphic Novel is the graphic novel I never knew I always wanted. Guys, this book is THAT GIRL.
I'm a huuuuuuge fan of Heartstopper: Volume One, and if you are fans of queer romance, especially queer graphic novels, you will love this one. While it isn't *quite* a romance yet, but there are the starts to some pretty epic love stories here.
Imagine a beautifully illustrated graphic novel where a gay guy moves to an alternate, supernatural earth (like another dimension that parallels the human world) and has to discover who he is, not only with his magical powers, but with his sexuality and with all of his relationships. He has to make friends, stretch his wings, and figure out his place in the world. We see him through his highs and lows, and the book does it with humor, affection, and some sensuality sprinkled in. I had the HUGEST smile on my face while I was reading.
The side characters also... LOVED. We get a huge range of POCs and also some disability rep, and a nice variety of supernatural beings. The first book was just a taste of what is to come, and I can't wait to read them all. I would like to see some more powers and magical/paranormal abilities in future installments, but overall... no notes, people.

In Les Normaux bevinden we ons in een bovennatuurlijke versie van Parijs. We volgen Sébastien, hij heeft magische krachten en Elia, een vampier, die elkaar ontmoeten. Hun ontmoeting is vrijwel meteen ingezet met een kus. En dan blijken ze nog buren te zijn ook. Maar beide zijn onzeker en houden de boot nog een beetje af.
Deze graphic novel is een romantasy met veel potentieel. De personages worden geïntroduceerd op een leuke en speelse manier. Zelf vind ik Elia echt een leuk personage, ik bedoel, wie kan nu niet van vampiers houden? Er zit ook wat humor in door de situaties die Elia en Sébastien meemaken.
De tekeningen zelf zijn erg aangenaam. Ik hou zelf niet van strips die een beetje ‘schreeuwen’ oftewel, te druk zijn. De kleuren zijn mooi in balans en het lettertype is ook aangenaam. Wel spijtig dat sommige woordjes niet vertaald werden uit het Frans.
Het einde doet mij echt smaken naar meer want het eindigt nogal abrupt. Daarom kijk ik dan ook uit naar het volgende deel! Dit voelde soms meer aan als een opzet tot meer. Daarom krijgt deze queer romantasy graphic novel 4,5 sterren. Het is echt veel te schattig.
P.S. ik vind persoonlijk echt dat dit boek stinkt (letterlijk)

I would be very surprised if this didn't become one of the biggest graphic novel releases of 2025. I would describe this as Heartstopper for adults with a wonderful fantasy twist. It's a perfect comfort read with characters who feel real and interesting, adorable slowburn romance, and super fun world building.
I already read this on Webtoon when I found out it was being released, inhaled the whole thing, and then read it again physically, since the Dutch translation is already out. I loved it even more the second time around!

Zonder het door te hebben gehad in één ruk uitgelezen. ONTZETTEND VERSLAVEND!!!! Alles hieraan is perfect: de diverse personages; het terugkerende boze konijntje Pierre; aroace rep; heel veel verschillende LGBTQA+ rep; de levendige art style; de prachtige kleuren; de realistische personages; de achtergrond personages die niet hartstikke een-dimensionaal zijn maar ook diepgang hebben… Ik kan eeuwen doorgaan.
Geloof mij nou maar gewoon, dit is helemaal hét. Mijn nieuwste obsessie.

In Les Normaux heb je een mensen-wereld en een magische wereld. Hoofdpersonage Sébastien verlaat in het boek net de mensen-wereld om te gaan studeren magische universiteit. Dit doet hij echter niet zonder schuldgevoel: zijn familie, die geen magie kunnen beoefenen, laat hij achter in de mensen-wereld. Sébastien ervaart ook de nodige zenuwen om opnieuw te beginnen in de bruisende en magische stad Parijs.
Om wat afleiding te zoeken besluit Sébastien om een avond uit te gaan. Hier botst hij letterlijk op tegen een knappe vampier. Vervolgens gebeurt er iets wat Sébastien niet had verwacht: ze kussen! Door Sébastiens onzekerheden zet hij het op een rennen en hoopt de knappe vampier niet nog eens te zien. Maar dan staat hij ineens ’s ochtends voor zijn deur…
Genieten!
Les Normaux is magisch, romantisch en simpelweg super vermakelijk. Het was dan ook echt genieten om deze graphic novel te lezen.
De illustraties zijn prachtig. Er worden mooie kleuren gebruikt maar er hangt tevens een tikkeltje duistere magie overheen, waardoor het goed aansluit bij het verhaal.
Het verhaal zelf is prettig om te lezen. Er hangt duidelijk een spanning tussen de hoofdpersonages, waardoor je graag door wil lezen om te ontdekken hoe dit allemaal uitpakt. Daarnaast ontdek je als lezer natuurlijk ook de magische wereld en de magische school, wat ook een leuke ervaring is.
Na het lezen van Les Normaux kan ik zeker bevestigen dat het geschikt is voor de fans van Heartstopper. Het is lieflijk en grappig. Het is romantisch maar bevat ook zeker de nodige diepgang om het ook echt interessant te maken. Er komen thema’s in voor die ook zeker bij de doelgroep aansluiten, om goed tot de verbeelding van jongeren te kunnen spreken. Wat mij betreft dus zeker een aanrader, en ik kijk nu zeker uit naar het vervolg.

What they say about Paris being magical has to be true! At least, I think so after reading Les Normaux. A secret “other” city that lives alongside the human one full of mythical creatures and magic users.
For Sébastien, moving to the city was imperative seeing as how his parents are non-magical and want to suppress his gifts. And then he comes out as gay…… and with the help of his Aunty, he finds a place and enrolls at a magic academy.
On his first night in Paris, he decides to go into a bar, but finds a quiet corner to disappear alone into. But that’s when a mysterious guy walks straight into his hiding spot and invades his space. An INCREDIBLY attractive man named Elia. After some conversation and drinks, they kiss. Which gets into Sébastien’s head and he runs away never to see the hot guy again…
Only problem is, they do see each other again. They’re neighbors.
This has been one of my favorite webtoons since I started reading them. I love a boy meets boy story, especially when one is just coming to terms with his sexuality. Plus, there is such an amazing cast of characters that have sexualities all across the spectrum.
Did I mention Séb’s adorable bunny, Pierre, who throughout the comic is imagining himself as a leader in world domination? The combo of cute and angry always makes me giggle.

I really need to read more graphic novels and I'm glad I jumped back in with this one.
This was a sweet start of a story with a group of characters who were easy to get invested in and root for. I'm really excited for the next volume.

deze graphic novel is ZO ONTZETTEND LEUK. het is een soort heartstopper (alleen zijn de hoofdpersonen hier mid/eind 20 en dus geen YA) maar dan met vampieren en weerwolven 🥹 de queer en bipoc representation is geweldig en de illustraties zooo mooi. ik wilde gewoon niet dat het al stopte 🥺🥺🥺

En una salida nocturna, se descubre besando a un atractivo vampiro, Elia, y aunque huye torpemente, a la mañana siguiente descubre que son vecinos, y a pesar de la incomodidad, la atracción sigue ahí; ¿serán ambos lo suficientemente valientes como para darle una oportunidad al amor?
¿Me ha atrapado desde el minuto uno por lo sencillo, tierno y mágico que es? Desde luego que sí. Me parece fascinante lo muchísimo que transmite con diálogos tan cortitos, pero las ilustraciones son únicas.

Entramos num mundo que não é o nosso, um mundo que preza e celebra a diferença, uma utopia quase perfeita. Ficamos a conhecer personagens que vivem no frenesim das suas próprias vidas, rodeados de um panorama de "dating" moderno, problemas familiares, de procura de identidade e em busca de um lugar onde possam pertencer tal como são. Com vampiros, mágicos, génios e muitos monstros.
As acções, o romance, a cultura, a representação, tudo apresentado com uma arte garrida e que avulta as personalidades que habitam este primeiro volume de uma história que vou querer acompanhar.

I'm so glad that Les Normaux by Janine Janssen was recommended to me for the 12 Challenge 2025 because this is a new favorite. I went into this basically blind but absolutely loved it. The representation in this fantasy is so refreshing and the characters are all delightful. I have a feeling it will be on my best of 2025 list! I am eagerly awaiting Volume 2!

Zdecydowanie jeden z najlepszych komiksów jakie czytałam!
Uwielbiam cały wykreowany świat i bohaterów, jak między nimi iskrzy tego nawet nie da się opisać słowami. I nie chodzi mi tu tylko w sensie romantycznym, ale też rodzinnym czy przyjacielskim. Po prostu czuję to co oni czują, płaczę kiedy oni płaczą i śmieje się kiedy oni się śmieją.
To co mnie zdziwiło to zdecydowanie wiek bohaterów, nie wiem czy dałabym im 27-28 lat no ale dobra pomińmy ten aspekt haha
Kocham te wstawki z królikiem, to co mu się śni albo co sobie wyobraża, genialnie wymyślone.
Kreska i kolory zdecydowanie oddają klimat tej historii.
Nie mogę się doczekać kolejnych tomów!!

Wat was dit een heerlijke Graphic Novel! Een mooi divers verhaal, over 2 kwetsbare jongens in een wereld waarin magie, vampieren, weerwolven, feeën, cyclopen en djinns heel normaal zijn, maar ze dezelfde struggels hebben als de mens. En dat alles prachtig in beeld gebracht met illustraties.

OMG this graphic novel was everything, the graphics are so beautiful and captivating. This queer love story is everything, I loved this majestic world and characters, I want to be put in the book. This book showcases queer love, finding yourself, the struggles of being in your late 20s, sexuality, career and so much more. I couldn’t put this book down. Sebastien and Elia’s connection was just so cute. I loved also how well the side stories were told. I loved the friend groups so much. Take me to paris, I want to fall in love and live my best life. This graphic novel was everything. I will impatiently waiting for book 2.
