Good translation and helpful side notes. An interesting ancient document with ongoing relevance.

My takeaways:
- abbots were the original people managers with absolute authority, many lessons in how to fulfill that role
- they didn’t approve of laughter or much talking at all
- possessions including one’s body are completely forbidden
- prayer schedule resembled more other religions than we would think today

The rule of st. Benedict is sufficiently strict that to follow it would certainly require a great deal of self control and humility. It’s clearly not designed to be a pleasant life, but one which will create sanctification. While I’m sure there’s freedom and joy to be found in that life, it’s frankly amazing that monastic life has continued to find adherents generation after generation.

3 Stars • This modern take on The Rule of St. Benedict by Saint Benedict of Nursia feels surprisingly practical. It’s less rigid than expected, focusing on balance—work, rest, and reflection—while emphasizing humility and community. Simple, thoughtful, and still relevant if you want a more grounded way to live.

Such a great short read! It was interesting to read the “rules” these devout Catholic men follow with fidelity. I’m thankful for their obedience and holy example.

There is little to learn from this book unless you are intending to start a monastery.
