Amelia was a bitch. She knew it was cruel, pretending to like Ian so as to get him back to her house alone just so she could embarrass him. When he arrived at her house to pick her up for the prom - which she invited him to - she wasn’t ready and it was soon clear she had no intention of going to the school dance.
Instead she wanted to stay in with him; a chance to get closer and enjoy some “quiet time” seeing as her parents were out of the house. Ian had never been with a girl before so when she took the lead, he went with it - not knowing he was being filmed the whole time she was making him put a show on for her. The plan being to spread the video amongst the rest of the class. She knew it would hurt him but it didn’t stop her from pushing forward with her pathetic plan.
What she didn’t know was the level of revenge Ian would take on her years later after a chance encounter with her in the local supermarket... Equipped with a toy built entirely from plastic bricks, Ian was going to hurt her physically as much as she’d hurt him mentally. And to think, people thought it hurt when they STOOD on the bricks.
MATT SHAW was born, quite by accident (his mother tripped, he shot out) September 30th 1980 in Winchester hospital where he was immediately placed on the baby ward and EBay. Some twelve years later (wandering the corridors of the hospital and playing with road kill when he was on day release), the listing closed and he remained unsold, he was booted out of the hospital to start his life as a writer and hobbit – beginning with writing screenplays and short stories for his own amusement before finally getting published when he was twenty-seven years and forty-five seconds old.
Once Published weekly in a lad's magazine with his photography work, Matt Shaw is also a published author and cartoonist. Has to be said, can be a bit of a flirt and definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, somewhat of a klutz.
Favourite books "Roald Dahl's Collection of Short Stories" Tim Burton's Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy Anything, really, written by himself. Because he is that good.
3.5 stars. This reminded me of I Am the Cheese by Robert Cormier, but just a lot more violent. I liked the lead up and the depth that we followed our lead (No spoilers). The back and forth between the portions of this character’s life really kept me into the whole thing. Then, there was the big twist, which totally heightened the entire experience. Again, I liked it, but felt that the story was too short to bring it all together properly. Every part of the latter portion needed more detail and development. However, despite some minor issues, this was still a really fun book.
Not the best from Matt Shaw...but a fun and nasty short revenge story with one strong gory scene. The ending was somewhat different, and I found it a little confusing and was slightly disappointed with it...I wish that it had been a lot better!! 😞
But after reading this...I don't think that I will look at LEGO in the same way ever again!!
Fun little read! I didn't clock on to the direction it was going in, so that was an added bonus for me! Not sure I'll look at my Lego sets quite the same though 😬
As always, I’m a tough critic when it comes to star ratings—but Dick Brick earns its three stars with a disturbing punch.
This is a quick, brutal read that fits perfectly into a busy day, especially during spooky season. While the storyline is undeniably harsh, it leans more into psychological horror than splatterpunk. It’s not about gore for gore’s sake—it’s about unsettling the mind, and in that regard, it succeeds.
Some readers have commented on its brevity, but I found the length appropriate. The story delivers what it sets out to do: a short, sharp shock of horror. Any longer and it might have lost its edge. The twist, without spoiling anything, is the standout moment. It caught me off guard and forced a mental recalibration that I genuinely enjoyed.
I’m giving three stars for the storyline, the disturbing atmosphere, and the unexpected twist. However, it loses points for not being quite gripping enough. I went in hoping for more splatterpunk intensity, and while that might have altered the book’s direction, it could have added the visceral impact people were expecting, if I dare say.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: This novella is dark, and features sociopathic extremism, including self mutilation, suicide, obsessive fixation, dual personalities, flawed family dynamics, child abuse, profound sexual violence, incest, institutionalized care.
The author includes a warning (on the front cover) regarding the contents.
Humiliated on prom night (shades of Stephen Kings “Carrie”), Ian vows to never be vulnerable again. An impulsive response leads to a tragic existence, with revenge being the only glimmer of hope.
Wow. There is a lot to process in only 78 pages. Uncomfortable through most of the story, the author effectively conveys sociopathic mental illness. What started off as just shock and awe for the reader, actually becomes a very tender yet tragic biography of abuse and maladaptive coping. There is a rather masterful convergence in the end that justifies the extremism encountered in early chapters.
It’s an admirable work that I quite enjoyed, but I Cannot Recommend due to the violence and number of potential triggers included.
I really didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did tbh! I definitely wouldn’t label it as an extreme horror at all, as there was nothing extreme about it really. It was more psychological. The plot twist was INSANE and I never would have guessed it in a million years!! I was shook. It was also a short and quick read which I love! I’d defo read more from this author. I also may look at Lego differently now 🤣
What an astonishing literary experience! This book expertly crafts the illusion of a single narrative, only to have Matt Shaw dramatically shift the story's trajectory as it approaches its conclusion, resulting in a entirely new and unexpected tale. This book, though brief, unequivocally establishes Matt Shaw as one of my favorite authors.
Never read such a confusing makes no sense short story, especially the last chapter. Horror? Sicko-yes! A horror story should make me scared, not weird.
** Check trigger warnings** Thought I'd have a change and try out an extreme horror. Ive read some really strange books before but this was something else 🤣🤣🤣. Christian is asked to go to the prom by popular girl Amelia who has recently broke up with her boyfriend. When he arrives at her house she isn't ready for prom and suggests that they don't go and have a night in, Netflix and....... Amelia encourages Christian to perform a sexual act on himself but what he doesn't realise is, the ex is in the cupboard filming the whole thing to humiliate him online. Christian is so embarrassed by this and decides to hack off his 🍆. After years in a mental insituation Christian seeks revenge and decides to create a 🍆 made from plastic bricks, kidnap Amelia and use the 'dick brick' to assault her with. The whole thing was strange enough and then you get hit with the twist at the end 👌. This was definitely a good one to introduce me to the extreme horror genre, it was a very quick easy read.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Okay… I don’t even know where to start with this one. Matt Shaw does what Matt Shaw always does, dives headfirst into absolute madness and somehow makes you enjoy it. 😳 This book is crude, chaotic, and disturbingly "funny" in a way that only Shaw could pull off.
Every page had me equal parts horrified, wondering what kind of twisted genius dreams this shit up.
And that plot twist? Chef’s kiss, the kind that makes you sit back like, “wait, WHAT?!” I genuinely wonder how many people DNFed this before reaching that twist because… whew, they missed out on the insanity in the best way possible. 😅
Well, this one was DARK. While I could see the argument for this being an extreme/gore horror short story, I really think this was more of a psychological horror story with some gore included. I certainly applaud the author for the overall plot of the novel, as I did not see the ending/direction this story ended up going in coming at all. I did think that this short story suffered from some formatting, consistency, and quality issues throughout. Not a slam-dunk or anything, but it left it's mark for sure.
All my reviews are my opinion. Dick Brick, I wouldn't class as an extreme horror. Yes, parts were gross, but it was more a psychological horror, in my opinion. Without giving away the plot or adding spoilers, I can't really say much. I think the length of this story is just right. Any shorter, and it would have made it slightly confusing at parts, any longer, and it would have stretched on and became boring. I found it to be well written. The plot twist at the end. I can honestly say I didn't expect.
You sure can do a lot with Legos, but I didn't know you build something like that!!! You start reading this story and you get into the possibility that our main character is doing these things and..BOOM...Matt throws a curve ball you didn't see coming!! I read this in one sitting and it did not disappoint. Highly recommended. Another masterpiece from the mind of Matt Shaw!!!
3.5 stars. - Personally I wouldn’t call this an extreme horror. It’s a short story that’s dark and fvcked up, but based off the ending I’d say it’s more along the lines of a psychological thriller. I feel like I can’t say much more about it without spoilers, but content warning for possible Child abuse or SA that’s implied. While some things in the story were rather horrifying, the ending totally changed my perspective.
I loved this novella. It’s a revenge story with an ending you could never predict. The book is sick and twisted and I can’t even describe the plot because Amazon will take this down. If you love bizarre and extreme horror this book is for you. Matt has written hundreds of books and he always delivers.
Story was alright. Twist Ending was not what I was expecting so there’s that. Personally this story was more weird than scary. I did get a gut-wrenching feeling when reading the synopsis as the description was just foul. But that was about it. The End.
Not bad but not the best. Kind of seemed like everything wrong with the kid was down to the parents not being honest about what happend to him when he was younger and the whole story wouldn’t of happened if they was poor kid never stood a chance.
Wos! Surprising ending..but I likedc it! The characters could have Benn a little more described but over all..one of Matt Shaw's best as far as I'm concerned!
