The Spice of Life

Rate this book
The Spice of Life (or TSOL, to fans) follows Jake Furie Lapin, a 37-year-old sexaholic and loving Dom. As the first book in a three-part series, TSOL explores Jake’s transformation from a submissive, out-of-shape man, stuck in a sexless marriage, to a strong, successful, fit, loving Dom. This first book follows Jake as he describes his many sexual adventures, in great detail, to Kelli, his sex therapist.

Kelli Lemberg is a successful sex therapist who has an office-based practice in Manhattan. Like Jake, Kelli finds herself trapped in a marriage that is lacking heat and passion. Through her sex therapy sessions with Jake, Kelli begins to undergo an amazing transformation of her own, as she uncovers and explores the depths of her own inner sexuality and sensual fire.

This book had me gripped from the prologue. This great insight into the BDSM lifestyle starts off with Kelli who is in an unhappy marriage looking for something new. She decides to try a website to meet someone new. She then meets Jake, at a bar and she takes him on as a patient in her sexual therapy office. The story heats up when she learns all about Jake and his lifestyle.

This is a great read, and very well written. I loved every moment of this book and can’t wait for the next one. I loved the controlling ways of Jake and his confidence in every situation. I felt moved by his life stories and drawn into the depths with which he told the story. Kelli was easy to relate to, as she was not your typical twenty something with no real life experiences. Her and Jake uncover some truths about each other, and already the attraction is between the two is palpable. Jake did an amazing job with this book, and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us in the next book. Amazing writing style and storyline will have you turning the pages unable to set it down.

I give this book a high 5 stars, I absolutely loved it!!!

Variety is the spice of life.

This book is more than just a steamy, hot erotic read. It is beautifully written and full of heart. Jake is the first author that could make me feel so strongly and experience all that the characters have as if it had happened to me. This story is very relatable and more realistic than other stories. Many of us come to a point in our lives where we decide that it's time for a change. It's an amazing feeling to experience someone else's transformation, especially when you are going through your own. I would recommend this book to everyone!

Finally a new book that is not the same old story. From the very first page this book held my interest and continued until the last. It's a story about a woman (Kelli) who is in a difficult situation in her marriage and wants to feel alive and desired again who also happens to be a sex therapist. She meets a man in a bar name Jake who makes an appointment with Kelli in her office and he precedes to describe to her in detail his transformation from a submissive to a confident, strong and dominant man. Kelli looks forward to his appointments and finds herself drawn to Jake. The writing flows smoothly and I found myself not able to put this book down. The authors writing style gave me a feeling like I was listening to a friend recounting a story to me. I look forward to the next two books in this trilogy and whatever else this author writes.
It put a smile on my face.

Reviewer was given Advance Reader Copy (ARC) for honest review of “The Spice of Life: The Transformation” by Jake Furie Lapin. This is solely my opinion of this publication alone. Rating based on flow of story line, character development, plot development and overall feel of publication. Any grammatical or format issues were not considered in final rating of publication.

******WARNING CONTAINS SPOILERS********

Characters:
Kelli: A sex therapist with a rocky non-existent sex life.
Jake: Strong minded

Told in Kelli’s Point of View (PoV)

The beginning of the story we are introduced to Kelli, the sex therapist. Kelly has been going through the motions of day to day living in robot mode. A very unsatisfied sex life with her husband, kids grown and out of the house Kelli tries to capture some sense of intimacy. She soon finds herself in a cab on New Year’s Eve heading home with a drunk passed out husband and the radio on. Commercial comes on and soon Kelli is thinking about having an affair.

The flow and rhythm seem to advance nicely throughout the first few chapters. The introduction to Kelli, learning about her past and present emotional mind set draws the reader into feeling a connection to her. With the introduction of Jake is where reviewer becomes confused. Leaving reviewer having to read and re-read paragraphs. With multiple instances of ‘How did the character know that info?’ or ‘Wait I thought that was…”. This confusion corresponds with Jake’s recounting events of personal experiences … which started with the retelling of his weekend trip to Vegas in his first session with Kelli. This confusion happens throughout.

I was really hoping that the cohesion of recounting events and dialogue would correct itself, but I found this not to be the case. I started to find Kelli’s thoughts and actions to be lacking considering this is to be her PoV. There is more dialogue from Jake than there is Kelli. Wanted more of her reactions and feelings of what Jake was recounting, instead of just his recounting the events.

One reoccurring theme throughout Jake’s retelling of his stories especially in his younger years is being tied with silk scarfs and blindfolded. I tend to find this unbelievable that most of the young ladies he had sexual encounters with have that much experience with that aspect of sex. It almost feels like the same story retold with different names and different places.

The story progresses in a way you find Kelli becoming more and more infatuated? Lustful? Needing of male connection? Release built up sexual tension? Jake starts to become more demanding of things involving Kelli, and Kelli well she is all too keen on pleasing Jake. Jake is a commanding force and dominates the conversations between the two of them especially during their sessions. At one point I find Jakes actions to be cold and callous toward Kelli. A brush off if you will, this irks me. It is at the beginning of one of their sessions and Kelli asked a question and his response is simple and cold, then he begins to go into his story. The interaction between client and therapist is just off or missing.

Conceptually this is an awesome publication. For me there are elements that are missing or misplaced throughout the book. Cohesion of thoughts was lacking and dialogue missing. I felt since it was from Kelli’s PoV that more of Kelli should have been present throughout. More questions from Kelli more perspective from her maybe even a compare and contrast between where she is in her life and Jake’s recounting of his life’s encounters. Could she see herself transforming just as Jake has done?

This is just one opinion. It is my (Sarah) opinion and I stand by my honest opinion. Just remember opinions are like assholes everyone has one… please decide for yourself.

Great read. How many authors, men especially, are willing to put their life experiences not only to pen and paper, but published for anyone to read. Kudos. A very relatable story, especially from a housewife of 20 years in a mundane marriage where she could quite possibly be Kelli. Change isn't always easy, and if no steps are taken it certainly won't just happen. Gives readers a lot to question and ponder. Look forward to reading more and going on a self discovery journey.

What happens when a marriage becomes stale? When the marriage your in is no longer exciting, sexual, but yet monotonous and boring? What happens when you’ve lost yourself and you don’t know what to do, where to turn?

TSOL explores these very issues.

Meet Kelly, a sex therapist who married her childhood sweetheart Paul. Now with two grown up girls, Kelly has realised her marriage is in trouble. She has lost herself. Her spark. Her happiness.

Turning to a dating site, Kelly hopes to find life again. Is an affair an option? Will she re-discover herself on a sexual level? Will she find the connection she desperately craves?

Throw Jake Furie into the mix. Smart, self assured, sexual, confident. Meeting Kelly at a bar, he soon discovers that Kelly is a therapist and is easy to talk to.

Then begins their friendship. Will Kelly find what she is looking for in Jake? The connection is there, the chemistry, the spark. But is it enough?
What can Jake offer Kelly? Can he help her? Can he guide her? Can he show her what it’s like to live again?

TSOL takes you on a journey of self discovery, sexual exploration, love and need. It takes you on a journey of overcoming life’s hardest lessons and over coming them.

We highly recommend this book. We give this book an 8 out of 10.

An Intriguing Read!

Quite the debut novel, Mr. Furie Lapin. I must say I was captivated from the moment I started reading, unable to stop until I reached the final page.

The Spice of Life introduces Kelli, a middle-aged Sex Therapist, who is, sadly, suffering a stale, lackluster marriage – desperately seeking desire, excitement, sexual fulfillment, even love. With that said, it is certainly a truth that many a woman can relate to.

Jake – the sexy protagonist who hires Kelli as his therapist - is quite the seductive and alluring character. I found myself intrigued alongside Kelli. Jake’s honesty, forwardness and overall commanding presence left me craving more. So much more.

I found the writing style to be very unique – different from anything else I’ve read, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The development of the characters was done in such a way that you felt apart of the ‘scene’, captivated by their individual stories and the relationship that you can see forming between the two.

Brilliant ending. I truly look forward to the next installment in this series. Well done, Jake!

It started off a little shakey and repetitive.
But overall the book was great.
Beautifully written.
Definitely draws you into the story and Jake's life, what he's been through, how he came about his nature.

Both lead characters are great, Kelli being a little shy. They both seem to be going through the same thing.
The only thing I have to say about this book is the bossiness when Jake first went into Kelli's office..took me a bit by surprise and made go hold up..Isn't this Kelli's office?
But I liked the story. How it was portrayed was awesome!

Beautifully written with such intense description of Jake's life from beginning to end. Reading of all that he went through and the transformation into a Dom he manages to take every life wrong doing to him & turn it to something worth wild & positive for himself.
As I was reading I felt different emotions during his journey that took hold of me as though be was simply speaking to me. I won't give any spoilers because you JUST HAVE TO READ IT!
It will take ahold of you mentally into a man that can be hurt & still come out a loving Dom.

The Spice of Life: Book 1: The Transformation
I received this book as a gift for a fair and honest review. This is the first book in a three-part series. The Spice of Life follows Kelli, a successful sex therapist, stuck in a loveless marriage. She has a husband that doesn't pay attention to her and they have been together since their teen years. She does not want to leave but she needs to seek something with more passion, heat and more!!! She goes on a website, which was less than helpful, but one man sounded ok. They were going to meet, but he never replied. She went to the meeting place he give her, where they were suppose to meet, but she ended up meeting her future client, Jake Furie Lapin. He is a 37-year-old sexaholic and loving Dom, also caught in a sexless marriage. He starts seeing Kelli in her office base practice in Manhattan...things heat up from there!!! Jake describes his many sexual adventures in great detail to Kelli. He does have Kelli do somethings not required of a therapist. He sets rules. The end kind of leaves you hanging in regards to whats going to happen with Kelli. This book was about Jake! Can't wait to see what happens with Kelli!!!

gifted in exchange for an honest review

in the beginning I really liked this book it was not what I expected and I started to get sucked into Jakes world, a lot of the encounters if I may call them that are very hot and dominating, as I read on I didn't feel a change in the book it was somewhat plain sailing there was no kind of dramatic events or omg moments it was somewhat predictable although still hot, for me though I like my books to have that kinda shock effect and I didn't get it. I liked the characters and the storyline is well wrote, I would be very interested in reading more to see where it goes.
Jake you had me at the beginning kinda lost me in the middle for a bit and only partially brought me back to your story in the end for the first book (which I hope there is more to ) it is really good but I would like to see that bite in future books that will separate your story from the norm so in saying that I give this book 4 stars good job

Well once I opened this book I knew I wasn't going to be able to stop till I finished. I have read all Jake's blogs and his teasers but nothing compares to the way this book reads. It draws you in from the first sentence and takes you on a glorious ride of the sexual awakening, transformation and erotic escapades of Jake Furie Lapin as told to his sexual therapist Kelli Lemberg.....and what a sensual journey it is....filled with tale after tale of what experiences Jake had to bring him to where he is at this point of his life. This is definitely a 5 star book from beginning to end and if you never have read anything by Jake, you can read this book...but trust me you will want to go back and read all his blogs, and hear all his Soundcloud recordings after. Bravo Jake!!!! #tsol

I liked that there were so many story's in this that jake had gone though
and they were incredibly detailed,
which I have become to expect from this author,
It's not just a HOT read it's quite spectacular how he can remember
Every little detail weather good or bad in his life.
Over all I really enjoyed reading this book and how he explains things
from his past that have made him the man his is today,
Found jake to be a very intense guy but guess that adds
to his persona, the fact that jake knows what he wants he goes after it
Can see he loves to be in control, he seems a sweet guy to have gone though
everything he has and came out a better person.
Look forward to reading more of his work.

This is an incredibly intimate look at a man who is reflecting on his life by sharing it with a therapist who is also at a point in life where she is questioning her own life. The characters are so aptly described that I was pulled into the book, holding my breath at points and releasing it with a whoosh at other points. Jake is someone who presents himself as he is and there is something magical about him. I am beyond thankful there are more books to come in this series. Once you pick up this book, it will be very difficult to put it down. This is definitely a book that stays with you, it has a message . . . be open to it and enjoy.

The Spice of Life follows Jake Furie Lapin, a 37-year-old sexaholic and loving Dom and Kelli Lemberg a successful sex therapist in a sexless marriage who is contemplating having an affair.

I felt bad for Kelli right away, she tries so hard to get her husband Paul to notice her sexually and he rejects her time and time again. I thought I would be bothered by the "affair" parts of this book, but honestly I wasn't. I found that the book surprised me by telling how sex and physical attraction is just as important in a marriage as being compatible in other ways. If your partner is not attracted to you sexually that definitely messes with your self esteem which in turn can ruin your relationships.

I liked Kelli right away. I am not so sure about Jake, I liked him but I don't love him yet. At times I found him to be very alpha male and sexy when he recounted his stories of sex and submission during his therapy sessions. But I felt like he was just telling me stories, I need to read more of him actually interacting with Kelli and showing his dominance to her. Maybe in the next book. It was exciting to read how he came to be the confident Dom he is today from being a depressed overweight guy before.

The author definitely has me curious about what will happen between Kelli and Jake and how their relationship will play out in the next books. Will Jake and Kelli begin a D/s relationship, will Kelli leave her husband or just have an affair. Will Kelli realize the significance of a particular story Jake told her in the last chapter. I picked it up, went back and re-read the line twice, and I wondered "Kelli girl how could you not get that part of the story hello?"

Jake's retelling of his life and how he transformed into the person he is today were hot, steamy and sexy. They were also sweet, endearing and sometimes sad.

This book was definitely different then other books I have read recently I look forward to the continuation.

4 Life Transformational Stars

My Review

As a child both male or female we are told that one day we will find the loves of our lives get married and live happily ever after. You notice that the story ends there? No one ever tells you how the rest of the story is suppose to go.

The main character, Jake, has been in a 10 year marriage that has left him sexually unsatisfied. This part of the fairytale is never discussed or talked about to us when we are growing up as a children. Jake has tried to work on his marriage and just realized that he will forever be miserable if he doesn't make changes. Is it wrong to finally decide that you want more in life and desire more than what you currently have or don't have? Are you strong enough to follow through with those actions to make you happy?

Jake reaches in and finds his inner strength and transforms himself psychically, mentally and sexually. You get to hear the transformation as he tells the stories to his sex therapist, Kelli. Kelli is also in a unsatisfied mental and sexual marriage.

The escapades that Jakes describes excites and titillates both Kelli and the reader. Jake's strength and alpha tendencies are a sexual attraction that women can not look away from, additionally he is hung per the ladies in his stories. Jake also begins to explain how he entered the world of BDSM.

But what is the reason for Jake to spilling all his sexual history to Kelli. Does he know that she is so excited and turned on by his stories. Is he enjoying exciting her sexually. What is Jake's plan for Kelli? He definitely has a motive for all this.

Oh some of his stories will have you clenching your thighs.

This is a must read. If ever you wanted to read how to spice up your sex life or how some are drawn into BDSM, then this book is one you definitely need to read.

I loved this book. It started off where we were introduced to Kelli a sex therapist who is in a sexless marriage. One day she decides to connect with someone online. She ends up meeting Jake and he becomes a client of hers. As the story unfolds you find out all about Jake's history as he tells Kelli through his therapy sessions. This was a very sexy book that left me wanting more. I can't wait to continue the story of these well written characters.

Jake,
Absolutely wonderful! Now I have to wait for the rest of this amazingly hot sexy story! Keeping me and the rest of the world on the edge! Wonderfully written and very sensual! With just enough mystery! What is Jake up to with Kelli? And she does not know that they already met on the website! So juicy! Can't wait to find out what happens next! Thanks Jake and Congratulations!

Very impressed! Can't wait for the next installment! I like how Jake uses the therapy sessions to tell Kelli about all of his encounters. Kelli' s marriage situation is so familiar; I could totally relate. (Before my divorce) Anyway, congrats Jake, I'm excited to see what else you've got planned.

I had such anticipation for this book & for good reason! Jake did such a great job of letting me see through Kelli's eyes and to feel her hurt in some situations & attraction in others. And let me just say that Paul is the epitome of a emotionless man. If he died in the first part of bk 2, I wouldn't mind, lol.

I can't wait for book 2 so that I can see what is to come between Jake & Kelli, if anything. All I know is that Jake has definitely awoken Kelli and I hope she embraces her new view & handles it like a strong, sexy woman, because she is more than capable. As for Jake, I'm feeling as if he has something to achieve when it comes to Kelli. I, of course feel that that achievement may be in Kelli's favor. But we shall see! Hurry, hurry book 2!!!

ARC given in exchange for a honest review

What I Loved: I really enjoyed the character of Kelli, right away it was someone I could emotionally be behind and root for. I love strong female characters that have confidence, strength, and their shit together. In many Erotica books female leads are more timid and passive, but Kelli isn’t that all and I absolutely love that about her.

I also love that these characters are older and more settled in their lives as opposed to twenty-something’s who are just all over the place emotionally and trying to find their place in the world. Although Kelli is embarking on a new path in her life, she’s still more established and self-assured. Jake is definitely the adventurous type which makes me totally love him, he’s been through a lot in life and he definitely comes off as the type of person that learns from all his experiences rather than it weighing him down and not moving forward.

Not So Much: This was definitely a refreshing take on erotica and that was great because you don’t come across stories like this often. But I kind of got bored at times because there were big chunks of this story that felt unorganized and just kind of rambling. The scenes mostly took place during therapy sessions, and Kelli would ask Jake a question which would spurn this 5 page explanation that had little to do with the question. They storyline kept on going off into these other tangents that could’ve been shortened to keep the story on track. It was really hard to become emotionally invested with everything because the rambling just kept on getting on my nerves.

Plus the details were pretty good when describing Jake’s past, or the kind of clothes the characters were wearing, but that same attention wasn’t paid to the environments around them. I have no idea what Kelli’s house looks like or her office. There’s very little talk of Jake’s home or office as well. It was just inconsistent to me, to have great detail paid in some areas but not in others.

The Spice of Life follows the lives of Jake Furie Lapin, a 37-year-old sexaholic and loving Dom and Kelli Lemberg a successful sex therapist, who is in a sexless marriage and is looking for something more for her life. The story is told from the point of view of Kelli whom describes her current life circumstances with her less than attentive husband. Kelli meets up with an old girlfriend in a bar and Kelli meets Jake who after a flirty conversation and finding out her occupation implies he needs a sex therapist. They schedule an appointment and he begins seeing her after a short trip to Las Vegas.

From here the book seems to turn into Jake's point of view from all the stories he needs to tell. Don't get me wrong. The story line is superb. It is sensual, seductive and girlie part tingly hot. Mr. Lapin is an excellent writer who is great with descriptive words while clearly defining his characters and their story line. There are some parts in the book where I just get lost. The flow of the story gets jumbled up and then eventually you figure out where you are. There are other grammatical errors but I didn't base my review on those. I believe if the flow of the book was corrected along with the grammatical errors, this would be a 5 star book for me. I anticipate reading the next book in The Spice of Life series. Mr. Lapin sure knows how to keep us on the edge of our seats with his steamy endings. Congrats for a great book!
