✨Light Heart✨

A wonderful sequel to Jessica’s debut, Veiled Skies, we return to the world she’s created with fae, mages, humans, mystical creatures, and amphitheres (aka dragons!).

We fall back in to the pages right where we left off following a dual POV from our MCs. Deming is awash with another wave of grief in the wake of book one’s events and reveals while our MMC Nikita and our found family attempt to help her navigate it. This installment is FULL of more reveals, plot twists, and heart dropping (and swooning) moments. Prophecies and bonds abound. Loss and victories keep us glued to each page. The romance is precious and healthy and the way Jessica addressed the darker themes and mental health was so beautiful, gentle, and supportive.

The world building is increasing. The character development is continuing. The stakes are climbing. Jessica is cultivating a series that is both entertaining and encouraging.

Tropes you may find in LH are mental health rep, fated mates, unique bonds, grief support, found family, reveals and plot twists, medium spice, winged cinnamon roll MMC, feminine rage, and that ending!

Big thank you to Jess for letting me once again be an arc reader for her team. It was an honor!

That is the way to do a sequel!! Wow, that was a journey!!

This book picks up right where the first left off and jumps right into it. Deming is lost to her grief at the beginning and has to figure out a way to work through it. I really enjoyed watching Deming find her strength throughout. The new magical creatures introduced were exciting to the plot. Just like the first book there were many plot twists, and just like the first book, some I saw coming and some I didn’t which kept me reading!

I absolutely loved the dual POVs from Deming and Nikita this time around and felt the character development was strong.

“We may be bound by fate, but I am yours through love and choice. What the gods designed us to be is an affirmation of what I already felt for you, not the reason my adoration exists.”
This is one of my favorite moments from the book!

Thank you to Jessica for an ARC copy!

@authorjessicasanti you have done it again! You have left me hanging on the last sentence of your book with my jaw dropped to the floor. Thank you so much for an early read of Light Heart, book 2 of the Veiled Skies series. This book is set to be released on 04-15-2025. I highly recommend picking up Veiled Skies and getting your preorder in. You will not be disappointed. Light Heart brought us back to the world of Deming and Nikita. Dealing with the loss from book 1, Deming is in a dark void. Her days mesh, guilt ridden, and empty. Even though Nikita, Paris, Ilysse, and Vallyn stand at her side, she feels alone. It takes the warmness of Nikita and the harshness of Ilysse to bring her back. This story will reveal secrets that will shock Deming to her core. In the end, it will take her strength and determination to save those she loves. No one will be left behind. She will not lose anyone again… but can she keep that promise? There was betrayal in book 1, and it continues into this story. Finding a new character to despise… one so sinister. The passion between Nikita was so beautiful to read and left me wanting more. The last chapters kept my heart racing. And then there were no pages left, and I’m sitting here hoping for a book 3 and hoping it’s being written as I’m writing this review. I will be very happy to return to this world where magic lives, fierce animals roam, and strong bonds will not be broken. This is an arc review, so these lines could change… but here are a few lines that captivated my heart: “He needed her to be ok. Like he needed to breathe.” “Anything lost can be found.” “About damn time. Now replicate that.” “She was not helpless.”

This second book was even better than the first. While Veiled Skies began at a somewhat slower pace, this was filled with action and obstacles from the very beginning. I really loved how the descriptions were so whimsy and ethereal, making the writing feel poetic at times. The development we see in Deming was perfect, and I loved how sweetly her relationship with Nikita progressed. I’m also a big fan of authors exploring new kingdoms & places, so that was a huge bonus. This is a solid romantasy series filled with suspense, magic, & a unique take on dragon/snake riding - definitely worth checking out.

Thank you so much to the author for gifting me this ARC 🩷 Light Heart is the second book in the Veiled Skies series (currently on Kindle Unlimited) and will be available 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟭𝟱𝘁𝗵.

Ya know when you finish a book & instantly start picturing where the story is gonna go in book 2? Well, Jessica said, “nah... whatever you’re thinking, you’re wrong.” She took this world & completely flipped it on its head, taking this story in a completely new & exciting direction. Not only was the world expanded, but we dove deeper into existing relationships (hello, fated mate & soul-bonding dynamics!). We dealt with the consequences of Veiled Skies’ final moments in an authentic way, which were some of my favorite scenes because of the raw emotional vulnerability.
She felt unsure how to move throughout the world in the wake of loss. She felt terrified both at the prospect of never feeling fully alive again and at losing the companion of grief... Most of all, she felt unknown. Even to herself. Her body and her mind and her soul felt incompatible. Who she was today felt like a completely different person to who she had been. She settled on what felt the most true. “I feel lost.”
But I also loved the intimate scenes between our main couple. The support of one another, protectiveness, communication (or difficulty to do so until they learn how their dynamic best functions), the realistic spice, & the exploration of their new relationship felt like such a reward while reading. This slow burn has definitely paid off!
“You have become someone I can’t imagine living without. I crave your presence and your words and I love the way you treat others. I love a lot about you actually. I love your tenacity and will. I love your dedication. I love your spirit.” ... She hadn’t meant to say that. She couldn’t love him. She cared for him but she didn’t love him. Love was sacred and delicate and everyone she had ever loved had been taken from her or hurt because of her or betrayed her and shattered her world into a million pieces... Cruelty and death and broken hearts lay in shards at the foot of her love. Oh gods, he would be taken from her too. Darkness swept in, hard and fast. She could take it back. She couldn’t let her love hurt anyone else...
“Deming.” Her name snapped her attention back. “Breathe... We should all be so lucky to love and be loved. Love emboldens and ties and strengthens and yes, sometimes, love hurts but we cannot deprive ourselves of what makes us who we are. You love so much... It is a gift, to have that much love to give, not a curse.”
Action-packed storytelling, emotional trauma, relationship expansion, more understanding of the antagonist’s motives, etc. made this a fantastic read & I love the journey Jessica is taking us on!
“I never said you were perfect, princess. Only that I admire your strength. Even the fiercest river bends and flows and crashes into banks from time to time... It matters not whose blood you share. What matters is the contents of your heart. The desires of your soul. Do you know what I see when I look at you? Fire and snow and flowers. Ferocity and softness. Beauty both bold and gentle. There are multitudes within you that should be celebrated, not suppressed. You are magic, Deming. The only shame in this is that you don’t see it.”
If you haven't read book 1, then stop, go back & do that. Now, for those of you who HAVE read Veiled Skies, buckle up because this book is so different in a wonderful way!
She wasn’t sure if she could handle more scars. More evidence of indiscretions leading to death. More physical portrayals of guilt.
Where book 1 took place in a castle, this one takes place with our characters constantly on the run & making camp in the wilderness on their trek across. Our FMC went from a mostly-gown wardrobe to a mostly-pants & fighting leathers attire. She went from reluctant princess to an outcasted rebel coming into her own power.
Everyone loved her too much, put her on too high a pedestal. She didn’t understand it. She was just a girl. Perhaps, though, she could learn to accept the love others so freely gave her even if she didn’t understand why. Perhaps she could let go of the doubt that tinged every corner of her mind, that whispered still she wasn’t good enough for the people in her life. One could be healing and still be worthy of love.
Where book 1 had dark moments, trauma & grief for our characters, book 2 has... ok, well, not EVERYTHING has changed.😆
That was the duality of life, she supposed. There was always war, always sadness, always pain. And in the same breath, there was always hope, always joy, always beauty. Everywhere, all at once, there was both life and death.
Seriously though, if you loved the atmospheric, romantic-style of writing, that hasn't gone away. In fact, Jessica showcases her talent by weaving her style through various battles & action-packed scenes our cast goes through. There's a lot more magic & creature exploration, but she does a stellar job of making sure the reader never gets lost in the fantastical nature of her world. This is such an unexpected storyline, but such a wonderful & entertaining sequel!
She thought, perhaps, that this was what being loved was supposed to feel like while healing from trauma. Not the absolution of guilt and perceived sin and profound sadness, but the embracing of it as a part of you. Everyone was gifted scars through their lifetime, but in the same way that a brass statue became more beautiful as it aged because of its tarnished surface, not in spite of it, scars did not make someone less worthy of love. It made them more.

Light Heart - Book 2 of the Veiled Skies series by Jessica Santi

I went into this book with high expectations after Veiled Skies - Jess Santi’s debut novel that had me falling in love with her beautiful, flawed, and real characters before ripping my heart out with the twists and cliff hanger at the end.

Light Heart picks up where Veiled Skies left off, Deming and Co still reeling from the gut-wrenching reveal (no spoilers!). An ongoing undercurrent of this book and series as a whole is Deming’s brushes with tragedy and how she deals with the fallout. Her raw emotion is on display early on in Light Heart, and as a reader you feel you are right there with her.

Unlike the first entry in the series, which was a slow-burn, court drama filled with mystery and intrigue and betrayal, Light Heart is an action packed adventure novel. The plot flows from an attempted kidnapping, to a rabid animal attack, to a mysterious cave and amphithere nest, to the fae capital of Bascade. All the while, revealing twists and turns that change who Deming is and even who she thought she could be. We meet new characters, and dimensions are added to those introduced in Veiled Skies. Deming and Nikita finally explore their mysterious connection, and all of the complications and excitement that come with that. All of the action, emotion, and mystery weave together a fantastic story of an exiled princess forging herself a new identity, and all the while uncovering a plot that threatens to consume the entire continent.

I could not put this book down, and the ending left me completely stunned and on edge. I need the third book like I need to breathe.

5 stars out of 5, and if I could give it a 6th I would.

Deming is reeling from all the losses sustained in book one. In her lowest of lows, she must decide how to work through the grief. When a new horror is plaguing the world, Deming and her friends must convince others to help.

Deming’s journey through grief was beautifully painful. It was raw and real, and I connected with it on such a deep level. How that impacted her journey throughout the story was gut-wrenching and yet so relatable. Once the grief happens, how can you prevent it from hurting you again? That question is explored on many levels.

Nikita aka Kit aka my forever book husband... WHAT A MAN. He is a rock for Deming because he intricately understands her. Their connection gets deeper in this book and I loved every single moment of it.

The prose throughout the story is so beautiful - the descriptions of grief, love, and everything in between was so touching!

The overall plot is a mixture of magic and introduces some creatures that live in the world - they are wholly unique and so interesting! The idea of a rider bond and a new creature bestie comes to light and I am excited to see how this continues to develop in the next book.

The big bad reveals come in waves throughout the story, but it all comes to a head in the final 10%. I now speak directly to the author: JESSICA, HOW COULD YOUUUUUUUUUUU?????

I am reeling with where things are left in the end, and I am desperate for book three to come out ASAP!

This series is for fans of The Lost God, Lunaria, and An Heir Comes to Rise! Thank you Jessica for the ARC opportunity!

Wowwwwww!
This book was an amazing second installment to this series. The world building, the explanation of lore, furthering the fae’s backstories, strengthening the characters relationships, the ROMANCE, and everything in between. All of these blended together wonderfully to create this story and I could not be more obsessed.

I loved just how much this book explains and expands upon this world. The first book did a wonderful job of this too, don’t get me wrong, but this book gives us sooooo much more. It really gave me a deeper appreciation and understanding of the storyline and why things were the way they were. I truly felt immersed in the story.

I also could not get enough of these characters! Between their own arcs and their relationships with each other, Jessica really does a fantastic job of balancing the individual characters growth while also strengthening their relationships amongst each other. And WOW did this book have it all. Friendships, partnerships, and the ROMANCE! The romance in this book was killing me in the best way. It was done so so well.

And you guys I think that ending ended me (SOB)! I am dying to know what comes next and I will be on the edge of my seat until we can find out. I am so deeply unwell after that last chapter.

Thank you to Jessica for allowing me to support this series in this way. I absolutely cannot wait for Vallyn and Ilysse’s novella!

Woah what a sequel! So much happened I don’t even know where to start but let me just say you will not be prepared for how this book ends. I could have thrown my kindle being left with a cliff hanger like that.
This book starts off exactly where the last left off and it is heavy. One thing Jessica does flawlessly is the portrayal of grief. The all consuming darkness that we can get get trapped in, unable to do anything but exist. The pain Demming experiences can be felt from the pages and are so relatable for anyone who has experienced loss. Not everything is sad though don’t worry. The found family in this book is everything. The unwavering support to help a loved one when they are at their lowest and help them rebuild. Demming grows so much in this book and watching her come into her own power was so awesome to read. This book comes with more spice than the last and the tension was absolutely delicious. It’s not very spicy but it fits so well into Jessica’s style of writing.
You’ll scream, cry and definitely be begging for more when you finish this book!

So incredibly grateful to Jess for letting me be an ARC reader! First off I need to say that book 3 must come out ASAP so I can know what happens next 😭 I continue to love the way Jess is able to make her fantasy characters relatable to the readers so we can connect with them on a deeper level. Her portrayal of Deming’s grief is refreshing because it guides the reader through difficult emotions they may be feeling in their own life without being a self help book.

For book 2 we have much more action and romance, without either having to compromise. The romance between Deming and Kit feels so natural and there are some spicy scenes included for those who are interested and they, like the rest of the book, are written beautifully. There is so much more world building and character development in Light Heart and now I am attached to every single character. I absolutely cannot wait for book 3 ❤️

I couldn’t wait to be back in this world and back on Deming’s journey! Light Heart picks up right after the crushing ending of Veiled Skies and kicks off the adventure with some chaos and a mysterious new plot line!

Jessica takes an authentic and unapologetic look into the complex relationship grief, healing and choosing to live (and love) again. Her beautiful writing envelopes you from the first scene and carries you through a world of heartbreak and strength.

We get expanded world building, amazing character development, and fantastical creatures. We also get some spice in this sequel and I appreciate how realistic it was and included 👏 communication 👏.

I am such a fan of this series and cannot wait until it continues! Thank you so much, Jessica, for an ARC of Light Heart! It was a joy to read and review!

I wish I could say I enjoyed this more than Book 1, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

I’m honestly a bit tired of the fated mates trope. I feel like I might have enjoyed this more if Deming and Nikita had simply been regular lovers who developed their relationship naturally, without the whole fated mates element. I know it’s fantasy, but still, that alone knocked off a star for me.

The rest of the book took me quite a while to get into. It wasn’t until almost halfway through that my interest really picked up. While it did get better after that, things felt messy again toward the end.

And finally, I absolutely hate the amnesia trope, which didn’t help my overall experience.

That said, I’ll try to go into Book 3 with an unbiased mindset.

Spice: 🌶🌶

A lot of second books in a series can either be extremely overwhelming or even disappointing, but not Light Heart! Without spoiling anything, I can say that I loved this book. Absolutely no notes. Jess writes beautiful prose, easy to follow world-building and expanding, and realistic character growth. The realistic spice that Jess writes needs to be studied because she wrote it masterfully. I have grown to love this series, and I am eagerly awaiting book 3!

Huge thank you to the author for the opportunity to ARC read, even though my post is so late. And an even bigger thank you for being so understanding that life happened. 🥹

The story picks up right where we left off from book 1 (which I love! because you feel like you're not missing a beat and can jump right back in!) There's definitely a lot more going on in book two - a lot more action! As Deming has gone through something pretty traumatic, we get to see how she works through her grief/guilt and becomes stronger on the other side. I also loved getting to see the romance bloom/solidify between Deming and Kit! Lots of character development, lots of plot development! I am definitely invested in this story and would love to continue reading whenever the next book is available!

You know how some series suffer from "2nd book syndrome?"

Yeah, not this series! This was an amazing sequel to Veiled Skies. The raw and realistic portrayal of healing from grief, the expanded magic system and world-building, the addition of fantastical creatures including DRAGONS, the relationship development between our main characters and, my favorite, the FMCs amazing character growth.

I literally have no complaints about this book. I love this author's writing and am eager to continue this series!

So honored to be an ARC reader for light heart!! Solid 4 stars, with a cliffhanger ending that will definitely have me coming back. I do wish that Deming maybe had a more interesting power - “light” magic is too similar to Aelin & Bryce, I want more! Give me a unique power like venom spitting! or turning into a guinea pig like the girl in sky high!!

“Tragedy is part of your story, Deming, but it is not your fate.”

I couldn’t wait for this continuation. After the devastation at the end of Veiled Skies (book 1), Deming is forced to go on the run. While looking for possible allies and a plan to take back her crown, Deming is drowning in her grief. With her found family's support, she gradually begins to find her way out of the heaviness that has consumed her. Deming’s strength and growth in this book was beautiful to see 🥹 I really enjoyed the deeper connections between all these characters, especially the relationship between Deming and Nikita ❤️‍🔥 Any time Deming needed encouragement, he was always there lifting her up, and their chemistry was...let’s just say, Nikita knows how to listen to Deming 🥵 This world is also expanding, with some new characters, new territories, magic, and secrets. I was taken on a whirlwind ride that kept me on the edge of my seat. I’m still not over that ending 😭 Thank you for the chance, to once again, be a part of your arc team. Can't wait to continue this journey with you and Deming 😁

Thank you for the chance to be an ARC reader for the follow up to one of my favorite debut author books of 2024! Light Heart picks up right after the tragic ending of Veiled Skies and I immediately remembered why I loved Veiled Skies so much! I loved this book and found the world building development phenomenal. I am extremely intrigued by the magic system in this world and will continue to remain a devoted fan of the Veiled Skies series long after it ends!
