Data Impact offers a framework to extract more value from traditional businesses. Being far from the world of economics and traditional businesses, I attempted to apply this framework to my own life as an individual.

From it, I have two key takeaways:
- The ‘Leverage-Neutral-Overhead framework’ reshaped how I think about ‘hard work’. People often say “work smart, not hard” - which to me now means “work hard on things that give you non-linear results for the effort you put in.
- Everyone has a unique leverage point. The key is to find your own - and use it to deliver value to the world in a way only you can.

I appreciated the book’s structure - the author front-loads value by offering hooks and summaries of what’s to come. The book gives you take-home exercises and demonstrates via case studies how the concepts apply to existing businesses.

Reading this also made me reflect on the nature of frameworks themselves: they are reverse-engineered structures that are created after something succeeds.
What would hit the home run for me is to see this SLASOG framework inside out - that is, take this framework and apply it to real businesses and maximize value. This way, it would deepen the case studies by demonstrating an insider perspective, as opposed to an analysis of others businesses from the outside.

I. Die große Illusion

Leverage – Nutze, was du hast, statt immer dem Neuesten hinterherzurennen.
Optimize – Lerne, was wirklich funktioniert – empirisch, nicht ideologisch.
Grow – Und dann? Setze auf echte Kundenbedürfnisse, nicht auf Buzzwords.

Soweit, so logisch.

Data Impact: How Legacy Businesses SAVE LEVERAGE ALIGN SIMPLIFY OPTIMISE GROW to WIN delivers a practical and insightful roadmap for organizations seeking to create real business value in an era dominated by digital transformation and AI hype. Ritavan offers a refreshing perspective that prioritizes business fundamentals, strategic clarity, and measurable outcomes over chasing the latest trends.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its focus on helping established businesses leverage their existing strengths rather than attempting to imitate digital-native organizations. By grounding its recommendations in first principles and empirical thinking, the book provides a framework that feels both realistic and highly actionable for leaders navigating complex business environments.

What stands out most is the SAVE–LEVERAGE–ALIGN–SIMPLIFY–OPTIMISE–GROW methodology. This structured approach helps organizations identify waste, focus resources on high-impact opportunities, align teams around shared objectives, and create scalable systems that support long-term growth. The framework transforms complex business challenges into manageable and strategic actions.

The book also offers valuable guidance for leaders looking to make better decisions with data. Rather than treating data as a technical exercise, Ritavan demonstrates how it can become a powerful tool for learning, value creation, and sustainable competitive advantage. The emphasis on simplicity and measurable impact makes the concepts accessible across industries and business sizes.

At its core, Data Impact is a reminder that successful transformation is not about adopting every new technology it is about creating meaningful value through clarity, discipline, and strategic execution. Insightful, practical, and forward-thinking, this book is an excellent resource for business leaders, executives, and decision-makers seeking sustainable growth in a rapidly evolving marketplace.

Data Impact by Ritavan is a thought-provoking and practical book that tackles a fundamental question: how can organizations create real value? At its core is the SLASOG framework which is a structured approach to value creation that are brought to life through compelling and numerous examples.

Although the book is primarily aimed at organizations undergoing repeated digital transformations, its insights go far beyond that audience. Readers from any background will find themselves walking away with fresh perspectives drawn from business strategy, economics, and even military thinking. If nothing else, Data Impact offers a rich trove of ideas to spark new ways of approaching complex challenges.
