His Sweet Obsession is a post–Civil War historical romance that blends mystery, danger, and slow-burn attraction into one compelling story.

Following the Civil War, Captain Ethan Reed is assigned a dangerous and politically charged mission: to uncover the truth behind the conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln. Although John Wilkes Booth fired the shot, someone else may have orchestrated it. Captain Reed’s duty is to dig deeper and expose the perpetrators, no matter the personal cost.

At the same time, Dr. Sabrina Clay is haunted by the mysterious death of her fiancé, Dr. William Nelson. Refusing to accept the official explanation and determined to uncover the true cause of his death, she leaves Washington City to take his position at Fort Greer as the compound’s new physician.

Their quests for truth intertwine, and working together forces them into close quarters, shifting their dynamic from wary cooperation to undeniable attraction.

Lamm blends intensity with genuine emotional depth. The chemistry between Ethan and Sabrina is sizzling, but the vulnerability beneath all that heat makes their connection feel very real.

Love and Conspirators
Doctor Sabrina Clay, smart and stubborn, does not believe her fiancé committed suicide. But to get at the truth, she needs family help to get permission to work at the Indian Territory army base where it happened.
Captain Ethan Reed investigates the same death from a different perspective. He’s gotten to know the doctor from letters, but is unprepared for the intelligent, beautiful woman who arrives with her mother and sister.
This debut novel by Ms. Lamm signals more to come and I look forward to exploring the immediate post-Civil War years with her characters.

This novel pulled me in from the very first chapter. Set in post Civil War America, it blends history, mystery, and romance beautifully. Captain Ethan Reed is a compelling lead driven, conflicted, and impossible not to root for while Doctor Sabrina Clay brings emotional depth and strength to the story. I loved how the Lincoln conspiracy storyline unfolded slowly, keeping me guessing without feeling overwhelming. The chemistry between Ethan and Sabrina felt natural and earned, especially as trust built through danger and secrets. The pacing was steady, the writing vivid, and the ending satisfying. Highly recommended for fans of historical suspense with heart.

This story takes place in 1866 in a western fort – Fort Greer – shortly after the end of the Civil War. Army Captain Ethan Reed has been assigned to investigate Lincoln’s assassination and the people involved. Booth may have fired the shot, but there were others who worked with him. His investigation leads him west to Fort Greer where the fort doctor has supposedly committed suicide. The doctor, William Nelson, was suspected of being a conspirator and Reed needs to discover the truth.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sabrina Clay refuses to believe her fiancé, William, killed himself so, with the blessings of the Secretary of War (a friend of the family) she heads west to find out what really happened. At first the head of the fort refuses to accept a woman as a doctor, but she saves the life of a woman giving birth as well as several injured men. Oh, and she saves a wolf who was attacking their horses! I loved that part!

The connection between Sabrina and Ethan is well-done, at least until she discovers he has lied to her about William from the beginning. I also love the relationship between Sabrina and her mother and sister. The way the author brought out the reasons behind her sister’s animosity was well done, as was the reason behind her mother’s “abandonment” when Sabrina was little.

I really enjoyed the story, the suspicions and suspects are multiple – and I actually did not really guess the perp! An unusual failing on my part so kudos to the author. The only thing I had a problem with was the ending. It just seemed abrupt to me. Yes, everything was wrapped up nicely, but… it just felt like there could have been more.

Still, recommended as a good read with a lot of suspense and a satisfying outcome.

Author Lamm may be new to the publishing world but she already demonstrates the skills to engage fans of historical romance by the first pages. Infusing details pertinent to the plot—such as continued questions surrounding the Lincoln assassination, Reconstruction, everyday life in the Indian Territories and, of particular interest to us as a retired medical provider, accepted medical practices of the day. The attention to the fine details of what is today’s accepted practices such as blood transfusions, Cesarean Section deliveries, and post-partum care are spot on and very interesting.
For historical romance fans, Twilla Lamm is the one to look for.

Based on a scale of 1-5, His Sweet Obsession merits a 6.
