The Missing

Rate this book
The Shield went up right after the Weapon hit Anna’s valley. Nobody Inside knows why. They weren’t the ones who constructed it. All they know is that the Shield cuts them off from the Outside world. No one can go out. No one can come in.
Until the day someone does.
Anna is still hurting from the death of one of her Idents almost a year earlier. She, like everyone who was born after the Weapon deployed, was part of a multiple identical birth, and she’ll do anything to make sure her remaining two sisters stay safe.
Life inside the Shield is peaceful. Until sets of Idents begin to disappear. Anna stumbles across evidence that an Outsider is taking the Idents away, but none of the adult Survivors in her community are doing enough to hunt him down and stop him. Desperate to protect all the Idents—and especially her sisters, Anna takes matters into her own hands.
With the help of an attractive mysterious boy who escaped a bad situation in his own valley community, Anna is determined to find the Outsider and save her sisters.
Will she be able to stop the Outsider before he takes someone she loves?

Kristen Landon always thought it would be nice to live in a place where winter never gets too cold. Besides one lovely winter in California, she has spent her life bouncing back and forth between Michigan and Utah – both great places in the spring, summer, and fall. She now lives with her husband and four children in a home with fabulous views of Utah’s beautiful mountains out every window.

A great twist to YA dystopian/post-apocalytip story
A disease that kills most of the adults. A shield cames down isolating the community. All the children born since come in sets of identicals. That is so awesome!

These kids are surviving with limited adult supervision and by scavenging from the homes where people no longer live. But there are a lot of rules to keep them safe, and those rules must be followed.

I like the way the story unfolded. This dystopian/post-apocalypse world is amazing. It has rules and communities that are consistent, if different. The world and the characters develop in a natural manner that is easy to follow.

The plot kept me reading with all the twists and turns, secret identities, and lots of mysteries to figure out. Who is kidnapping the Idents? Who is plotting against the community? Who is hiding secrets? It’s complex and intriguing, and book 1 in what is looking to be a great series.

Oh, and teen romance. That complicates everything!

The characters are strong and relatable, and their relationships are believable. I loved Anna. This girl is brave! She refuses to give in, regardless of the danger.

I have a few cautions: If you’re afraid of dogs, be prepared for the beginning of the story. One of Anna’s sisters dealt with addictions and has died before the story starts. There is some violence. All of this is handled well. I think most teen readers can handle it.

I give this book 5 STARS. Recommended for ages 12+ who enjoy a futuristic type of story with strong action and plot.

Set in the future where a weapon that destroyed all living things was deployed around 20 years ago. A large area of land was surrounded by an electric wall. Few people survived and they were so badly burned they have to wear special clothing to act as skin. The babies born to the survivors were all twins, triplets or more, with pale skin, eyes and hair, called Indents. These Indents are immune to most illness and healthy and strong. The survivors inside the 'shield' have no idea if anyone outside are alive and they cannot get out to find out. So they make the most of things inside. The few remaining adults help teach the children what they need to survive and they must work together to raise each other.

Anna is an older quadruplet who has taken the role of protector, especially since Gabrielle, her musical sister was killed by some rabid dogs almost a year previous. She sneaks out of the town limits to kill any dogs caught in her traps. Dani a third sister is an adventurer and a great help to Anna and Chantelle is the fourth sister, a flirt who fell into addictives after the death of Gabrielle and has only just been rescued and helped to become clean.

While working her way through abandoned buildings as she sneaks back home, Anna comes upon a set of twins who look to have been kidnapped and drugged. She is rendered unconcious before she can find out what is happening. Eventually she is able to warn Jose, the head of security, but nobody is found. A short time later another set of twins goes missing.

Anna feels like the security measure that are put in place are not enough and she struggles with (unnecessary) guilt and worry for her own remaining sisters. She decides to do something about it and sneaks out of town to search the abandonded spaces on her own.

While searching for the kidnappers Anna finds another Indent hiding in the abandonded high school. Tyce says he had to leave his community because of a bully and he has an unusual condition that makes him vunurable to illness and he is sick now. Slowly Anna begins to trust Tyce and after he feels better he volunteers to help Anna look for the kidnappers.

Told only in the perspective of Anna the mystery slowly unfolds as more and more children disappear.
I was as blindsided by the reveal as Anna was. The story ends with Anna finding a way through the shield (due to Dani) and seting off to rescue the missing twins.

No sex, Some kissing, No language, General rough housing by the boys, a couple of addictives attack a girl and pin her down, she is rescued. There is a scene of rabid dogs killing Gabrielle.

The writing was a little simple for me. I think the author usually writes for a younger audience and this is her first YA novel. I liked the concept of this story, the new words, the survivors choices and the new world they are trying to create. The twins were interesting, how they looked alike but were all so different from each other. I did not like the fact that Anna felt she had to save everyone, that she was the only one who could do it and that she was responsible for every bad thing that happened. I also did not like the way she treated her ex-boyfriend Rider. This is the first of a triligy so I can only hope she will learn and grow as it continues.

I am still very confused as to what is happening, it reminds me of the Maze Runner. I don't know who is bad and who is good. I think I will have to read the next two books to find out.

Twisted and unique!

This YA Spec Fic is such a unique story, I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!

It perfectly hinted at what would happen in the end without actually giving any of it away, with twists and turns that pulled things out unexpectedly for the best kind of suspense filled climax. Only letting us down long enough to be anxiously excited for the next step in the story.

This dystopian novel’s premise intrigued me immediately when I first started reading the Identicals series. The characters are interesting and real, and the story keeps moving quickly with the help of a little mystery and some action. A great read for teens or adults or enjoy dystopian fiction. I’ve already started book #2!
