War rages across New Colorado Protectorate, and both sides employ normal and supernatural soldiers and arsenals. Sentries like Todd and Nick Ruger have the talents and training to combat such paranormal threats.
When Todd and Nick are sent by New Colorado’s Chancellor Clarke to investigate a group of weapons smugglers, they wind up posing undercover on the riverboat Annabelle. To their horror, they discover the arms dealers are demons—creatures they have no experience facing. Staying alive will take all their skills and abilities, especially trust in the powerful bond they’ve forged.
In the process of trying to stop the flow of illegal weapons, Todd and Nick learn of an assassination plot—targeting Chancellor Clarke. The events it sets into motion will alter the Rugers’ lives forever.
*shaking my finger at author* Really? You made me wait so long to get this fifth book? I've been salivating. Truly. Just kidding. Well, not really, but, you know. *grins* The dystopian world Elizabeth Noble has created in her series 'Sentries', continually kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly turning the pages, and, sometimes, leaving a nightlight on. These books, filled with the wondrous tales of Todd and Nick Ruger are well written, with strong, complex characters, and I've adored every one of them. 'Tethered Pair' is book five, and I knew in advance that I was in for quite a ride.
Todd and Nick, at the order of Chancellor Clarke, are undercover on a riverboat, as a professional gambler and his much neglected slave. They're looking for evidence of weapons being smuggled for the other side in the protectorate war currently raging. They find evidence, all right, and an old "friend" they thought was dead. Benning, a demon, and his partner, Snow, who happens to be none other than Jah'lar, are the two running the smuggling operation. Since Jah'lar is in a new body after the prior one "died", he recognizes them immediately. Not good to be trapped on a boat with so many wanting them both dead. Luckily for them, help comes from a most unexpected source.
*** 4.5 stars *** I love the dystopian world that Elizabeth Noble depicts in her Sentries series. It lingers with me long after I have read the books.
I particularly enjoy the complex and loving relationship established between Todd Ruger and his slave Nick.
Book five in the series had me captivated from the start; beginning with laugh out loud descriptions of Nick's frustration at his master's unshared interests.
In 'Tethered Pair' Todd and Nick are once again on a mission, this time for the new Chancellor Clarke to work out who is behind illegal arm shipments in a time of war. They find themselves on a riverboat with Todd posing as a roguish gambler Tyler Macabre, and Nick his long suffering, neglected slave Lucky.
On board they meet fellow passenger Heidi Laroux who may or may not be all that she seems.
As the riverboat makes its way from port to port, Nick and Todd covertly assess fellow passengers and crew to unravel the unfolding mystery in a bid to break the arms smuggling ring.
The humour with which the story is told together with edge of the seat suspense as Todd and Nick confront old and new adversaries is compelling.
The world created by Elizabeth Noble is a marvellous cocktail of dystopia, supernatural, mystery, suspense and unforgettable characters who engage in a world where slavery exists, and is handled diffently from place to place leading to interesting social observation.
The dialogue between the protagonists is sharp and funny and sets a good pace for the unfolding story. The love scenes were hot, and that's always a bonus!
I suppose to meet a full five stars for me, I would have preferred a little more angst woven into the story, which was touched upon but not fully developed. The ending felt somewhat rushed and would have benefited in my opinion from a little more detail and I would easily have rated this a glowing five stars. Of course that could be my sour grapes because my delighted reading experience ended all too soon.
I know this series is one that I will read again and again and I look forward to the next installment. Brilliantly written and highly recommend. Discoving this series has been one of my reading highlights of 2014.
3.5 Stars - Tethered Pair took a new direction by taking our boys onto a river boat! I found the descriptions of the boat and the gambling interesting and it was a fun setting. You could see how much Todd liked this development and it was cute to see his enthusiasm. We don’t see as much of his and Nick’s deep relationship, this book is more plot driven, but it is still felt.
Although I liked the character of Heidi in the end, her constant grabbing of Nick’s butt was a little much and I felt bad that he had to endure the groping. One thing I have liked about this series is that there are good strong female characters who have their flaws so I was able to forgive her.
One thing I am still curious about is why the paranormal things in this world happen and if they always happened or if it is new since the catastrophe. It isn’t quite explained.
I am, however, looking forward to book six, where it looks like they will finally be able to be in peace.
While I liked this story I didn't think it was as good as the previous books in the series. It focused much more strongly on the investigation than on the character's relationship, which I suppose by book five is natural, but it left me missing the emotional intimacy of the first four books.
It is possible that my enjoyment was also hindered by two things. The first, outside the book's realm, was the loss of my beloved Fleury (aka Fuzzybutt), who had been with us for fourteen years. Hard to really enjoy anything when you are grieving. I will reread this when I am not feeling so sad and maybe that will change things a bit.
The second thing is part of the book and I don't see a reread making it any better. The older lady who is constantly groping Nick. Despite it being obvious he doesn't like it and that he tries to do everything to avoid it. It isn't humorous. There is nothing funny about someone touching you against your will, especially in a sexual manner. Most times we stick words like "assault" and "rape" to those kind of actions. But I guess it was okay because she "didn't mean anything by it" and because Nick was a man, oh, and a slave - which all just really make it that much worse. Todd was in a position to do something about it and didn't. He didn't like it, not because it made Nick uncomfortable, but because she was touching what was his. Bit of an epic fail for me in a series I have really enjoyed before this.
Still, if there are more books in the series I will certainly be reading them, this one just didn't quite live up to the others.
